SBVR Train Hits Truck After it Narrowly Avoids Railfans

  • On October 3rd, 2023 at 11:19am. A friend and I were following the South Branch Valley local to Petersburg. This happened just outside of Romney, WV in Vanderlip, at the Route 50 crossing. Out of nowhere we hear screeching tires and thankfully look up to take a few steps back before a pickup truck and trailer flys right by us into the signal box. Then the train makes impact and gives the truck a spin, at the same time the driver runs out of the vehicle. He got very lucky as did we and no one took trips to the hospital. The train had very minor damage, his trailer unscathed, and our car was not touched. Thankfully we parked it far back and weren’t standing any closer. A bit of time passed between each clip following the accident. Only got those little clips of the aftermath amongst focusing attention on talking with the police, train crew, and those involved.
    Before anyone assumes inaccurately. This truck was passed by a challenger, who then slammed on their brakes at sight of the flashing lights, and this heavy load had no way to stop that quick. The driver was very lucky and had a very good reaction as he avoided the challenger, us, and our car. After recording I made sure he was alright and authorities were notified.
    This is the original video by me and any shares should be credited to me. I apologize about the language, but in that situation, I don’t think anyone could help it. Once again, no one was hurt in this video.
    We did continue following the train after this event, here is the link to that.

      Truck was a 1/2 Ton Ford ... the Cable he was towing was too heavy for an Emergency Stop. I have been in this situation.. In a 3/4 ton truck I felt I had plenty of truck/brakes to haul an old 50's Cadillac. I borrowed an equipment trailer for the job and misjudged how heavy it was. Trailer was meant for Backhoes/ Small bulldozer and was 3500-5000 lbs. Cadillac was near 5000 lbs and I found out at the 1st stop sign how greatly I had err'd. I had no idea the trailer was that heavy. No one was around .. No injury, no crash but I couldn't stop the truck til it was in the middle of the intersection well past the stop sign. Had I used a generic car trailer of 1500lbs or so I would have been fine. Heavy load and quick stop caused this incident... Driver of the Ford truck was likely afraid he'd push the car in front of the train and just needed other options. Ford truck driver could have been crushed between his car and the signal/box .. Getting out of the truck that late was a bad move.

    why was either vehicle going that fast approaching the train crossing? surely the signal lights had long been activated before the Challenger passed and hit its brakes; what was the pickup driver doing going that fast that close to the crossing? if the pickup driver was slowing down for the crossing, it does not appear he would have screeched his tires that much to avoid the challenger; facts aren't adding up

    • @LightningTheLMS3FJinty2020
      @LightningTheLMS3FJinty2020 7 месяцев назад

      It was 55 mph and the pickup truck driver would have made it across if the challenger hadn't done illegal passing and slammed on its brakes. So essentially with challenger passing in no passing zone and slamming on the brakes it caused a chain of events to happen.

    • @WebsterHighlanders
      @WebsterHighlanders 7 месяцев назад +2

      @@LightningTheLMS3FJinty2020 common sense would dictate that regardless of the speed limit, when the crossing lights were flashing, both vehicles should have been slowing down to stop; the pickup truck driver can't race to cross the tracks with the lights on and then complain that a vehicle slammed its brakes on in front of him, passing or not; crossing lights on means STOP, not race to get across; it's just not common sense, it's the law in WV--17C-12-1

    • @stephensaines7100
      @stephensaines7100 7 месяцев назад +3

      There's little doubt that the heavy trailer, whether it has electric brakes or not, would have altered the truck's trajectory during braking. Note the truck's bed is empty, and that load is heavy, perhaps even heavier, than the truck itself. Skid marks would tell a lot, along with the testimony of the number of witnesses.

    @J.R.in_WV 6 месяцев назад +1

    So after reading the description and reviewing the video, as a CDL driver who drives something far heavier and harder to stop then the pickup and trailer seen here, I have to say it’s pretty much certain that the guy driving the pickup was driving distracted, driving too fast for the area and conditions, or most likely doing both. For me the “smoking gun” is the fact the guy in the pickup HAS HIS PHONE IN HIS HAND when he gets out of the truck….and he literally only had a second to get out before the train hit. Either his number 1 priority in a life-or-death situation is to retrieve his phone from wherever it is stored at superhuman speed, or he had the phone in his hand already when he wrecked. I think the logical conclusion is he had it in his hand already. But even setting that aside there are other issues, like @0:21 you can see the Dodge pass the pickup well before the crossing, there’s actually a car ahead of them that you can hear slow down for the crossing then take off once they see the train isn’t too close. After this you hear the dodge’s tires squealing as they (likely also not paying attention and assuming they could follow the car ahead and make it through the crossing) hear the train’s horn and lock up the brakes. They were obviously not without blame here but weren’t the sole reason for the wreck. I don’t hear the pickups tires sliding until it hits the gravel, and it’s still traveling at a fairly high speed at that point, which tells me there was no way he was going to stop for that signal whether the car cut him off right there or not….he was carrying way too much speed way too close to the crossing to have been slowing to a stop even if he was cut off by the dodge right beforehand. One more thing that I saw that’s not 100% proof of bad / distracted driving but LOOKS bad is you can pause the video as the driver’s window passes the camera and see that the guy driving has only one (left) hand on the wheel (this is for sure, and in an automatic pickup like this there’s no reason not to have both hands on the wheel) and appears to be quickly raising his other hand from somewhere near the console, although it’s too low to see if there’s a phone in it at that point. The guy in the pickup definitely did the best he could once he finally noticed (too late) that a crash was imminent, and if he’d reacted a split second sooner he’d have likely had time to swerve harder to the right into the open lot and avoid the signal box he hits.
    You have two people at fault here, really 3 if the signal was already lit up when the first car slowed down before accelerating and crossing the tracks. I say all three because you should never run / ignore a railroad signal and should approach rail crossings at a reduced speed because that signal could light at any moment. Even if you can see the train and think you have time the signal is red for a reason….running it is the same as running a stop sign or red light at an intersection because you can see the opposing traffic and think you have time to get through anyway. Running a lighted signal at a railroad crossing IS running a red light and should be looked at as such.

    THE DRIVER OF THE PICKUP MUST HAVE UNDERESTIMATED THE BRAKING POWER WITH THAT TRAILER LOAD OF CABLE!!

      I am glad nobody was injured and the train was able to proceed. But, yeah, the truck driver may have been going a bit too fast himself before the crash. There may have even been some racing going on -- some drivers hate being passed and will get aggressive after it happens. With a heavy load of cable and no trailer brakes, it would seem the driver was definitely driving too fast.
      There is no way to know, but it is possible that the passing car actually saved the pickup truck from speeding right into the path of the train if they were traveling much too fast to stop in time.

      From the description...the two vehicles were heading for the passive crossbuck crossing. Dodge passed the pickup close to the crossing and then jammed brakes as the locomotive (emerging from the siding of parked rail cars) blew his horn. The Texas truck went evasive and ended up going right, slamming on his brakes...which causes the trailer to fishtail, but prevent him from ending up mid tracks.
      Everyone got lucky.
