I need a p bass ,I checked the Mexican fender p basses but man somehow I didn't like them. That classic vibe 70's looks really nice the sound is like an old American p bass.
I found one at my guitar center and I couldn't keep it on the rack, it definitely has a great growl to the stock pickups with a smooth feel adequate tuners and it looks bomb, you can usually find them for sale on ebay unopposed because people don't like the price point (after all save $200 more and you can get a MIM) it comes with an 'ashtray' cover over the bridge and a 'thumb pull' but those are usually taken off by the previous owner lmao for what it is: 10/10 definitely worth the 400 new but you can def find a cheaper one on the used market.
I just purchased one of these and had 2 dead frets; [D-string/9th fret and the G-string/12th fret). Could've happened to anyone. First time I've had to send a Squier back and I've been playing them since '04. This is my 9th one. The music store was so cool and with no questions asked they're sending me another one at the word of my bass tech. I love Squiers, yes I do.
I have been playing bass pretty much as long as Dave and greatly respect what he has done and how he shows people how to get yourself fixed up and going which is something you would not have got from people even 10 yrs ago. Years after selling my white maple neck 77 American p bass ( and regretting it now) a friend of mine that works at the "brand name" music store told me about the white matt freeman p bass (also classic vibe series) this was a few years back and it was $379. I went in and lined up all the j basses from affinity to American Standard. I was shocked that it felt, played and sounder (in my opinion) better than the mim standard and to my ears was identical to the made in America special that Dave works on in one of his next video, The neck was spot on and had a tiny bit of back bow and still set a 5/64 did not buzz anywhere on the neck! I was able to set it a 0 relief and 4/64 string height and still no buzz. This is why I believe Fender all but dropped the line as it was probably going to be the next 80's mij squire and did not want it to cut into the sales of there "better basses"
I wish Squier would bring back those fiesta red 60's Classic Vibe P basses. They were awesome basses and I often seen professional bassist gig with those. I figure they were cutting into "Fender" profits so they discontinued them.
That's the one I have and it looks/plays/sounds fantastic. The Fiesta Red was my fav so I grabbed it. Glad I did because you don't see too many of them out there anymore.
i expect the "highly paid professionals" or whatever he called them thought they could rob him of some cash by doing it, not expecting him to do it himself
With how much people want for a used MIM p bass, these are a great alternative and they look awesome. Trading my schecter 5 string for a FSR green 70s p bass today.
Thought that was a stupid observation by the presenter. Of course it's not "the real thing", it's a modern bass guitar throwback of a 1970s Precision. It's called "Classic Vibe", because it's a Precision but with a modern C shaped neck profile instead of the Precision baseball bat width neck of an actual 1970 vintage Precision. It has nothing to do with it not being "the real thing".
The one in my avatar has that baseball bat neck. It's a 77 P bass. I love that thing. Plays like butter. It's heavy. I have a 79 Fender P that's light as a feather. Never played a Classic Vibe, though. I've only heard good things about them.
Wow, that is awesome, I would be over the moon if I had a 70s vintage P bass. I just ordered a Vintage Modified Precision PJ bass that I'm waiting on. It seems to be a decent inexpensive bass. Cheers.
Dave I wished the Guys at Guitar Center had the skills and patience to work on bass guitars like you man it's sickening !!!!! I pay good money for my set up and it plays the same way,, I got a 70's reissue Fender MIM with the block inlays and it's a great bass but I've got a dip spot on the fret board where the A string is. I don't know where your located but I wished you were located in Ga because for the amount of money I've spent I could of bought 2 more bass guitars anyway thanks for the tips Sir.
Hey Dave , what's up man? Hope you have the spare time to read this. My name is Guilherme , and i'm brazilian and a self-tought bassist. I've been watching your videos since 2010 and had never had the urge to comment here before ,since you usually answer all the questions before they pop. Recently i've acquired a 36yrs old Peavey T-40,and while doing some research about this awesome sounding instrument i realised that my favorite instrument review channel (yours) did not mention the incredible piece of art(in my humble opinion). I was just wondering/suggesting a video about the Peavey T-40. Keep on Rocking !
Awesome bass and tone, keep in mind those are not the stock pick ups. My guess is that they are EMG Geezer Butler pick ups which is the reason it sounds so badass.
Yes! I have the same bass and did the same thing. It sounded great with the stock pickups but it's awesome with the GZR pickups. Another comment mentioned that they're probably active but they aren't.
Can the truss rod nut on the Squire be replaced with a Fender bullet truss rod nut? I know some modifications are needed to get the bullet nut to fit but are the threads the same?
I have my original classic vibe p bass the baby blue one. Replace and up graded the pick ups and put flat wounds for those early Elton John songs like Rocket man. Beautiful tone!
I wouldn't mind getting one of those but they seem to have been discontinued a while back and I can't find one anywhere. Plus the price of the current Classic Vibes basses here are what a regular Fender should be, so that doesn't help matters.
I have the 60s Jazz bass, the 70s Jazz bass, and the Jazz bass77 from Squier all are great basses for the money a real steal if you ask me. I have an 83 and an 89 Fender Jazz basses that I've had since new and the 83 was my workhorse for all those years until I bought the 60s and 70s Squier Vintage modified models they were such good basses I retired the 83 and 89 to playing at home.
i picked my 60's classic vibe bass over waaaaaaayy more expensive jazz basses, and i havent once been disappointed with that decision. i get compliments on my bass tone all the time and i blow people away when i say its a squire.
Hey Dave, did you ever come across a P Bass headstock that is tilting forwards? It doesn't affect the playability, and the strings sit fine in the nut... but it's definitely tilted on my Highway One Precision. Is this common? Or is it a defect? Cheers.
I have one of these and I absolutely love it... one issue I came across setting it up though was that I wasn't able to get the string height below 5/32" without the saddle resting directly on the bridge, so I'm curious how he was able to set the action so low here. I was thinking I'd have to switch out the fat brass saddles with smaller ones from the bridge I replaced on my Fender. Any ideas? Neck is straight and nut height is perfect, I'm hoping I don't have to stick a shim under the neck.
According to the specs this bass is built with a basswood body. Without going into the discussion if it's a good tone-wood or not... how durable is it on these basses? Some say the wood dents and chips easy, and even bridge-screws come loose. What's your general experience?
Yes,the basswood bodies are softer woods they are prone to dings if you drop the bass badly.Tone wise they're ok for w budget brand guitar makers. They do the job and if you are not well aware of a good tone of a P bass that classic vibe will do the job.If you've already played a higher end basses then you know what a good consistent tone is.The frequency spectrum on these expensive basses is well tough out.The pickups are Alnico ,the woods are selected ones to fit exactly the specifications of the pickups, the finish is different ,electronics ,labor and so on.Thats why they cost three times or more. The American instruments are just better build quality and like a instruments just resonates better, they're just superior.I am not saying lower budget instruments are bad,no there are very well made inexpensive and great sounding instruments. What I am saying is a good instrument will always play like a butter.
Dave I bought a guitar a couple of months ago from a local company, it plays awesome but there only 1 fret that buzzes on 1 string (9th on G), any ideas?
Just got one of these bass guitars as a bit of a change and I’m really enjoying it.Just one thing what strings would you recommend for a beginner also what gauge? Love your channel btw cheers
most people would Gooch themselves trying to set it up without it laying flat. but I'm sure you've done it that way enough times to know what to expect
Bought a CV 60', and I was so satisfied with it, so the day after I went back to the store and bought their last one too. I stringed one of them with flats.
I have a Squier VM P-bass PJ. Nice quality for the money, but the set up wasn't great. Thanks to Dave's shared wisdom it is becoming a really nice bass. 🎸

" I could totally be a dick but you know." I love it. Can't tell you how many techs out there who wouldn't even bother to set it up, check for fret farts and then fret rock it thoroughly. They'd just rip the strings off and have at it so they can charge the most. No scruples. Great job Dave!
Nothing to see...ha! That seems like a great bass. Wonder how many times players take an instrument to a tech for a 'problem' when in fact the instrument is ok.
1. Get on of these.
2. Install a nice nut maybe tuners
3. Legit premium quality

I've recorded with this bass. Stock pickups through a bad ass amp and it sounded massive. A+
@@mr.anderson70 I've been trying to find one of the red ones but I guess it's not available anymore
@@CordScott Wow, didn't know they made the 70's P in red. Currently, there is a walnut version available. Good luck in your search!
@@mr.anderson70 Sorry meant 60's but can't find it.

I agree, I had one and it was very well made
Classic Vibes are awesome. Every one of 'em. They got some mystery mojo.

Ok so with the original bass you can take off the metal bridge guard thing off and the little bar under the g string ?
One can get fret buzz easily if the neck relief is out of adjustment either direction ...
Really sounds good Dave, would you recommend this bass and how much is it sir? Love your videos!!
Chris Christian get it!! I have a vintage modified jazz with pearl block inlay. I'm a guitar player but it works good for what I want to do

A shim in the butt end of the neck pocket will fix it. Then readjust bridge action and intonation. Much simpler than modding the bridge.
