this sounds fantastic. I love mississippi john Hurt in a way that only other guitarists could understand. His playing has taught me many things, and when i hear him him play, it's almost as if he's talking to me from the other side.
I am the daughter of Philadelphia jerry Ricks- I am so proud that he was taught, and appreciated by such Greats as Mississippi John Hurt- I remember going to the Philadelphia Folk Festivals and watching these events up close and personal. That they thought something special of my father is awesome.

I was among your Father’s first students in 1965-66 and just stumbled upon your comment. I remember when you and your Brother were toddlers. Your Father taught me much more than how to play Miss. John songs. His light touch (that’s become integral to my style) was emblematic of the grace with which Jerry moved through life, and that was the real lesson. Your Father lives on in me and the many others for whom he was our best Teacher

Hello Mrs. Ricks happy to cross you here! 20 years ago I was walking through Bruges (Belgium) and there was a sidewalk advertisement at a wine bar on my way back to the car. This evening : Jerry Ricks '' A little later we were sitting with our knees together in a corner of the cramped bar enjoying a musician I have never forgotten who performed the 'hambones' for me. Now I regularly play his records that have become oh so timeless. May he rest in peace.
For a Congolese nourished by rumba, listening to J. HURT is such a pleasure which takes us back to the sources of dry guitar close to Bosco wa Bayeke. The depth of the picking and the vocals are of divine sophistication. J. HURT is one of my guitarists whose picking game never gets old. NEPA Ch. S.

I could listen to John all day long. His voice is so relaxing to the ear and his guitar playing/picking is exquisite
I never, ever tire of John Hurt songs.
I started listing to John Hurt recordings shortly after his death in the mid 1960's when I was just learning how to play and I tried unsuccessfully so hard to play like him. Then, in the late 1970's I was in Grenada Mississippi on business and casually asked the gentleman for whom we were doing some work if Mississippi John Hurt was from around there. He said, "Yes, as a matter of fact his son is white washing the outside of this building we're in." Burt went outside and brought him in and introduced us and I asked him if he could play the guitar and he said he could't afford to own one but yes he could play. I loaned him my acoustic and he proceeded to beautifully play either Stack-O'Lee Blues or Candy Man Blues and to me it sounded just like his father! I've often thought about John Hurts son and wondered what ever became of him..... but I have an idea it wasn't good since he was very poor, and living in rural Mississippi.

John Hurt is one of my favourite guitar player and singer.Really GREAT.
I am 62 years old and thought I knew a bit about music. Then I just happened upon a 2 minute blip of Mr. Hurt's live music. How lucky can one get! I need to find someone who got to listen to him live....
I saw him live at Carnegie Hall in 1964. There were many artists on the bill and he only did a few songs, but I still feel honored to have seen and heard him.
I had the good fortune to see him live in 1960s. He was playing in a club in the West Village in NYC (maybe Gerde's Folk City). Great memory 60 years later.
I used to see he him at the Gaslight Cafe on Macdougal st. He always brought a coffee can out on stage and between songs he would sip from the can, then hold it up to the audience and say "Good to the Last Drop"!
I grew up in carrollton miss my mom lula pryor knew mr hurt well and Lucille hurt we would go to Avalon store as a child we left and movie to Memphis
Black, White, Green or Blue, People are people. I have lived all over the world and still love coming back home and am proud of this Folk Music... John Hurt overcame so much back then, I just wish everyone could follow his lead and do the same now...

i saw him int the seventies at th olympia in Paris France and Doc spoke about john hurt as one of his master and played several tunes of him

It has been said by people who know that my 4th cousin Mississippi John Hurt was a very great guitar player, singer, songwriter, storyteller and a very great man, No I will not disagree with a single word of praise showered on my cousin.
James, most of us feel the same. I remember the very first time I heard him on the radio in 1972. I was transfixed and had to go out and buy ever album that was available. Oh, so long ago. I call John my musical godfather although I don’t write like him. One day I will. If there is a fest this year, I will likely be there.

I have much respect for John Hurt, watching him play is mesmerizing and truly amazing to watch; a playing style that seems very rare these days to ever come across, and John truly perfects it and is a one of a kind. I never get tired of his music, it's too bad I was born in 1991 and discovered his music for myself for the first time in 2004. Wish I could have seen him perform in person back in the 1960's as well as see other blues legends and musicians.
me to the best thing we can do for him is to keep his music alive and his Blues Alive to pick up an instrument and play in dedication to him
I had the good fortune to see him play on a park bench in Berkeley in about '66. He played great and smiled the whole time. What a winning smile he had.
I too got to see him play several times in the DC area in the mid 60s. He was a fine musician of course, but more than anything he had a wonderful spirit that came forth when he got a chance to play before people. The thought that he might have just finished his days in obscurity in Avalon Mississippi would have been a gigantic loss to us all. Thanks to the folks who spent the effort to go and find him and get him performing again. And, most certainly, thanks to him for leaving his very special legacy.

genius. that ain't just finger picking chords. thats playing melody or at least riffs,
and accompaniment at the same time. sounds like two guitars. but its
just one. usually only classical or calypso quitarists can play this
way. god rest his soul. he influenced Leo Kotke and John Fahey(sp?).
another thing is he picked with his finger tips, not lengthened finger
nails or banjo picks that fit over thumb, forefinger and middle finger.
so that probably is responsible for the mellower tone, but it sounds
like a one man band. Candy Man is one my favorite Hurt songs

You think that the melody and bass seperation is a unique thing but many many great guitarists of john hurts era played in this style. It was not just a classical style, it was all over the blues. Rev gary davis, blind blake, lightning hopkins.. etc

I am crazy for John's playing. Blew me away from the first time I heard him 10 years ago on a library cd of this performance.

Anton sat in the front row at the Oberlin College concert April 15, 1965. Record released as "Best of" and Son House was on the bill. John Hurt so spry and wry.

sadly John Hurt's home was recently burned down near Avalon, Mississippi, I hope it gets rebuilt soon

He played with strong fingers. He really pops those treble melody notes. Tough playing that loud without picks or using fingernails.

I threw pallets for extra change for my son and i ! Still have one of the two trucks we rolled around at the getting places I established exclusive like because Me Hurt us right. No telling how much further we naygo. But we'll take your throw away pallet put them in piles on our garage floor outside its back door and collect the change to share in glory because we will always find more. +Eliezer Pennywhistler still this recording is 50 years old. The tape did well to survive! unless they cut the recordings to vinyl. Would like to know if that's the case...
I have 40-year-old audio tape that sounds just fine. It is a sturdy and robust medium, if you store it properly.

I've heard (on WXPN, Gene Shay's Philly folk radio show) John Sebastian accompanying MSH on "Pallet", but that was in the early '70s. Might it have been JS here too?
