    Fun note on those exit signs...the glow you see is powered by radioactivity. Inside are glass tubes filled with Tritium (a radioactive form of hydrogen) and a light-emitting compound. Tritium has a half life of about 12 years so that's how long it will take for that sign to lose half of its brightness.....no external power required.

    • @derkeksinator17
      @derkeksinator17 7 лет назад +59

      Another fun fact: The Lamp at 19:39 appears to be lighting for an emergency power unit. A Diesel generator probably. So if the power to this unit is cut it will start up and supply the building. Apparently they haven't removed it and I wouldn't be too surprised if it still worked.

    • @rustymotor
      @rustymotor 7 лет назад +16

      Was wondering about those signs, the older signs used Tritium filled tubes, they would be great to collect them, hard to find those tubes now.

    Orange pipe in the tunnel is generally used for fiber optics. Kind of a warning not to touch it as it contains fiber optics, and splicing that stuff can be a pain in the ass. Makes sense it would have been used in a place like this in order to connect multiple buildings.

    I had 2 Toshiba Satellite laptops a long time ago that were nearly identical to those grey laptops, but didn't have as many lights on the edge as those do.
    They run Windows 95, the "charger" isnt like a modern laptop with the brick inline with the cord, the Toshiba Satellite has an internal inverter/transformer. The cord is just a standard 2pin stereo cord, same one that Tivo's, cable boxes, some DVD players, and most PlayStation's use.
    The mouse isnt a pad like modern laptops, its the piece that looks like a pencil eraser in the middle of the keyboard, it functioned as a joystick to move the cursor around, works well.
    If you were to plug those into power, I would be absolutely amazed if more than 1/4 of them failed to turn on. They are like the tanks of the laptop world; slow, heavy, yet incredibly overbuilt, and can take quite a bit of abuse. Mine still worked fine in 2008 or later, but I don't think I have them anymore.

    • @vex-nh
      @vex-nh 7 лет назад

      Those things were garbage when they were new. Companies bought those because they were cheap, not because they were good.

    • @lionellinesfan
      @lionellinesfan 7 лет назад +2

      AlexCF
      I'm not saying that they were the top of the line, and by no means am I going to claim that they were powerful, modern computers are incredible with how capable they have become.
      Toshiba Satellites were made of a decently thick plastic, their construction is solid, they dont have a lot of flex like modern laptops do, just built stronger in general than new laptops really.
      When you drop a new laptop, the hinges break and plastic chips off the base. My Satellite fell off of counters and tables countless times, just scratched it, no real damage.
      Modern laptop battery's can fail to charge in 4-6 years, both of my Satellites still not only held a charge in 2008, but they still lasted 5 or more hours playing music from CD's.
      With laptops getting thinner and thinner, losing features such as DVD drives, as they limit how small they can make them, they have become flexible, brittle devices that you have to be careful with.

    • @vex-nh
      @vex-nh 7 лет назад

      I'm glad you were happy with yours. If you ever had the misfortune of using them in a business setting, you'd know how high their failure rates were compared with other brands available at the time.

    Neat place. Something serious to think about though. You might already realize but after walking through those tunnels with all that exposed asbestos, your clothes are covered in the fibers. Thousands and thousands of fibers. Shoes, pants jackets, hair, hands etc. Walking through the fibers stir them up, climbing over pipes that look clean just grinds them into your clothes. From there even if you keep your respirators on until you get outside, the fibers are still on your clothes. Get into your vehicle and now they are in there, in the seats. Guaranteed you have breathed them in long after leaving that building. They lodge permanently in the lungs and can take many years to cause disease. I love these videos but the unseen danger from asbestos goes far past the tunnels. Thank you very much for these videos, they are awesome. Be safe!

    A tip to keep in mind, even though you have face masks to protect against asbestos. It can still fall and sit on your clothes so after in the car you can potentially still inhale it. Would be good to have spare clothes to change out of and out the old clothes in a box till its washed.

Crown has been making professional and hi-end equipment for many decades. It's most famous unit was the DC-300 power amplifier (150 watts x 2 continuous), introduced in the late 1960s.

    Excellent exploration, love all that fascinating stuff you come across. I personally would get bothered going through those tunnels, could end up lost or getting into the wrong areas, keep up the great work and look forward to your return.

    To answer your question about the machine at 21:39, the label on it says "Thermopatch Corporation," which after a quick google search, still exists. They make machines for labeling and transferring designs onto textiles. Here is their website: www.thermopatch.com/

    i wish you guys could get your hands on some night vision goggles, it would make sneaking in and out of places that are patrolled, easier. Also, even if the tunnel or building you're going through seems to be inactive, be wary of hanging wires. Touching a high voltage line that's just hanging in your way would end your exploration real quick.

    Another fantastic video! I really look forward to your videos each week but sorry to hear that it will be about 1 1/2 months before your next one. If there was still so much to explore before leaving this series could probably do with a part 3, unless that is still to come. keep up the fantastic work!

    Really wish I had a device that would allow for me to flash restore places like this into it's pristine glory and you would be able to see exactly how everything was. And there would be something attached to it which would teleport the vandals away and only permit the ones who owns the building and harmless urban explores to enter.

    Dang, I'd love to get some of those old laptops sound equipment to tinker with.
    And you're smart to use masks. Not only does it keep you safe from particulates, any cameras won't be able to get an identifying face shot.

    You should try to explore Cementland! Cementland is 40 acres of abandoned buildings. It's in St. Louis, MO. In the there was a huge cement factory that was closed down in the early 1970s. In the mid-2000s a guy (I can't think of his name atm) decided to take the buildings and try to make a huge exhibit/adult playground (he also made the City Museum, also in St. Louis MO.) But he passed away in 2011 and was unable to complete it. I've been there and it so frigging cool, great for pictures and around here its well known to us urban explorers. Its amazing, also I love your guys's videos!
