Judging by the state of decay, the style of toys, and the wall art left around the place, I'd say the place was abandoned sometime around 1996-1998. The "Friendship Club" banners are what really make me think that, as they weren't all that popular and only stayed in elementary schools for five or six years before they got replaced with the "We Belong Together" posters I'm sure many 2000s kids are familiar with. What disturbs me the most is that unlike other mental hospitals that accommodate children, this one was built more like a giant boarding school in the children's wing than a medical facility. A lot of times they trying to make it as simple and sanitary as possible because the focus is to get the kids out of there once they receive their treatment. The turnover rates for beds in most children's psych hospitals is pretty high, as they don't stay there long once they're diagnosed and properly treated. With this it's like they were trying to build a home for the child patients, which suggests these kids were there long-term with no indication of any plans to receive immediate psychiatric treatment. Like it was just an enclosure to house the children that the state was throwing away. I can only imagine what sort of odd behaviours a child growing up in such an environment would develop. It might have made them harder or even impossible to treat, as the coping mechanisms and reasoning developed as they grew up in there would be unique to their circumstances, totally outside the realm of expertise for a child psychologist of the time. Then eventually they'd just be transferred to the adult wards. Sad and terrifying to think about.
that castle toy that they walked by is rare. i used to have one when i was a kid and i saw it on a list of rare toys. its worth quite alot of money nowadays
with that many large buildings the complex could have easily been a lot more than just a mental asylum. There could have been more traditional long term care facilities as well as other uses and not simply all asylum. There is also the possibility that while it was an asylum at one time it wasn't an asylum when it closed but a different kind of facility but it the name of it being an asylum stuck with the locals.
A lot of these asylums weren't just for mentally ill people, they also served as a place to put the mentally disabled. If that's the case here, then those children wouldn't have left. They were essentially warehoused in these places for life.
As a Mom. what struck me about the children area is that high chair for a baby and toys are for toddlers. It makes me wonder if people just gave up their babies with birth defects at the hospital, not even bringing the child home. so sad.
That isn't how it works.. People probably gave birth to babies in the asylum, but if a mother gave up her child because of birth defects, it would go up for adoption??
@@Robin-zx4oo Not back in the day. Kids born with birth defects were seen as outsiders and families often worried that having a child like that would hurt their reputation. Unfortunately nobody wanted to adopt kiddos like that, so they were stuffed away in places like this. It's sad but true
Nobody wanted to adopt "defective" children back then, and even today children with difficult special needs often have a really hard time in the foster/adoption system. Adoption as a concept is all good and well, but it only works if enough people are willing to open their arms and homes to the children after they're surrendered.
That’s the one thing that always bothers me with them is they explore with sneakers on. No even sneakers but skate shoes and I am like come on guys atleast use hiking boots. 2:11 maaaate.. I had one of those castles when I was younger. I used to make little stop motion videos on my sony ericsson k750 when I was like, nine, with little action figures. Good old fun times in the 00's!
I have to commend you guys for never taking stuff, defacing or breaking what you see in any of your videos. Leaving everything as you found it is always best. How much better and interesting would this place have been without everyone's graffiti? The sense of history is reduced with later-year markings. Discovered you just a week ago and watched 15 or 20 videos since then.
"We have to keep our voices down as right next to these buildings is a street patrolled by security" Yeah right, you know it just makes the video creepier ;P
When was this hospital active? I currently work at a psychiatric hospital for children, and toys like that are not allowed because they could be used as weapons. Curtains are certainly not allowed because they could also be used for self harm or to harm others. This doesn't add up unless this is a very old establishment that had no protocol, but those toys and jackets seem relatively new.
Nice video, you made Proper people, I love to watch your video on those abandoned buildings I never know that they excist as this Childrens ward. My compliments that you both take your time to record and show us this all. You both did a terrific nice job, looking forward to see some more new videos on other places abandoned ... Be always carefull when entering those places.
I went to a Special Needs school, and we had some of those six seater things. The red one with the balloons was almost identical to them, I think they were the same exact model or whatever. We used them to take the Pre-K kids around to busses or the church next door that we used for whatever we could fit on campus. Those things were super fun to play around with. But as a little 4th or 5th grader, having kids in it felt like the biggest responsibility in my entire life. I always volunteered to be the one to push them tho, just cause it was so fun. And the reason I pushed them with kids as a little 4th or 5th grader, was that we had some kind of safety patrol for one year that would help teachers during dismissal
why have the need for security? is there something to hide in that building? I understand the risk of squatters or illegal activity, but for that couldent there be less presence of police?
I can actually answer your question for sure. It is because the campus is still active with a hug building full of current patients right next to these giant old abandoned buildings and they have police and security keeping patients and explorers out of the crumbling asbestos filled buildings. All of this just got torn down summer of 2018
Another awesome vid! My advice to pack three plastic shopping bags in your pack, two you can use as emergency shoe covers and one to put the set bags back into. I am looking forward to part three!

Really cool video's, brings back memories of when i was doing this sort of thing back in the late 80's (No Gopro back then) just memories..
2:11 maaaate.. I had one of those castles when I was younger. I used to make little stop motion videos on my sony ericsson k750 when I was like, nine, with little action figures. Good old fun times in the 00's!
Seriously, how many hearts do u guys have? I would pass out from frightening.
The bike???? I would shit my fucking self
Movie of the projector: The Lone Eagle (1927)
Omg I've been waiting for this
I'm so early nobody has finished the video yet
I have to commend you guys for never taking stuff, defacing or breaking what you see in any of your videos. Leaving everything as you found it is always best. How much better and interesting would this place have been without everyone's graffiti? The sense of history is reduced with later-year markings. Discovered you just a week ago and watched 15 or 20 videos since then.
2:11 FUUUCK the nostalgia is REAL! I had me one of those castles as a kid I loved that thing.
your production value is skyrocketing!!! Guys, you have to start a TV show!!
seriously!
Should've tooken the footage on the projector, You couldve unsolved any mysterys?

Wonderful CRT TV sets and Monitors! My favourite part of watching these urbex videos
I love when you step on the ground and it makes noises!!!! So satisfying!and was that water on the floor!!
"We have to keep our voices down as right next to these buildings is a street patrolled by security"
Yeah right, you know it just makes the video creepier ;P
At 11:38 you can hear a little kid giggle creepy eh
I head that loud and clear
sounded like a little kid coughed and I also heard what sounds like screaming around there
I think it was just something squeaking. If it was not, the fuck this shit I'm out
I thought I was the only one
Are you sure it isn't him rubbing the camera by mistake?

what year did this place close? it looks not too old... awesome video too!
Is it just me or does it sound like a voice says "hey" as he enters one of the open spaces/room..9:43
Ameriss Alfaro I thought I heard who’s there..
I heard "who's there?" too
Me to
That Fisher Price castle... I had one exactly like that when I was young. Kinda spooky really to see it among all the wreckage.
This is your best video to date. The weekly series on this monster complex is a great idea. Keep me coming.
Ben Klaskala 1908-2003
Saw someone say jidging by posters and toys he was saying 1996-1998 which seem acurate to me
Is it possible this was just a daycare center or preschool at one point?
for some reason I knew 100% that he would say: "to the brim with blueprints"
Did anyone else see the frickin face in the window at 10:50-10:52
Eliza Grooms omg I wonder what or who it is
Eliza Grooms it was broken
It was just a hole in the window.
Omg it looks like a face
Lol I was watching that part when I came across this comment
Very good video,Bryan and Michael. The atmospehre in this abandoned asylum is fantastic.
I've been waiting for this and now i'm ready for part 3, I need to find people to urbex with in chicago I'm so into this
why have the need for security? is there something to hide in that building? I understand the risk of squatters or illegal activity, but for that couldent there be less presence of police?
If people die in there (collapsed ceiling, drowning, etc.) council is responsible.
MK-ULTRA experiments still going in parts of that asylum
I can actually answer your question for sure. It is because the campus is still active with a hug building full of current patients right next to these giant old abandoned buildings and they have police and security keeping patients and explorers out of the crumbling asbestos filled buildings. All of this just got torn down summer of 2018
i love what you guys do.. so respectful of the places you go.. what you explore is art and how you guys aproch it is art. I LOVE IT :)
I can't wait for next week's installment! Woot!! The Proper People RULE!
8:11
'Don't forget about me'. Maybe this was written by an ex inpatient?

+Keyboard Warrior *grabs popcorn*
This place would be kinda cool if the kids weren't locked away for huge amounts of time and drugged up against their will.
When you came back by that little pink bike and it was laying on its side...that did it for me! That place is huge!!
Another awesome vid! My advice to pack three plastic shopping bags in your pack, two you can use as emergency shoe covers and one to put the set bags back into. I am looking forward to part three!
