    I remember, a while back, I was a technician who did house calls. There was this Greyhound who flew like the wind, who would tease me. In my first experience with this dog, I remember getting in my truck and driving a mile away from the original site just after noticing a Greyhound staring at me. I drove through the community at 30mph and when I reached my destiny, I opened the door, and there was the Greyhound staring at me. It was his way of saying, "I beat you!" This happened several times afterward. What makes it interesting was he must have charged through the forest on the side. He had to run on the other side of the lake that was parallel to the road I was driving on. He always had to run twice the distance to be able to greet me at my door.
    That being said........what the heck are we going to do about the 7,000 greyhounds that will soon be abandoned?

    It seems that greyhound is pushing itself into the ground whereas the cheetah is staying level during explosion and pushing into and off the ground more balancedly. Necessity can play a factor because the cheetah is running for survival where as the dog is running for reward. The cheetah also has to account for a more dynamic target that can change direction and speed and can interact with them. So overtime the thought required in the hunt could have caused an evolution in the brain functioning in regards to the mechanics of their running. Diet as well maybe. Amazing video. Thank you!!

  • @hikikhun6668
    @hikikhun6668 9 лет назад +71

    I noticed dog's head move more than cheeta's while running. It goes upward and downward. What does that on cheetah is its flexible spine. Cheetah also doesn't keep the mouth open while running, the breathing is also different. Cheetah's paws touch the ground almost all together in the front, then in the back, meaning more energy in less time, therefore, more acceleration.

    • @JurassicClark96
      @JurassicClark96 9 лет назад +8

      Excellent observations! If I may, this is due to the evolutionary differences in felines and canids. Felines are evolved to be fast ambush predators, who take prey down in a quick burst of energy, canids on the other hand are endurance runners, they evolved this way to chase prey to exhaustion, their breathing system is surprisingly efficient, however much less so than humans, the best endurance hunters to ever walk the Earth. The Cheetah does not maintain it's speed for long when it hunts, and if it cannot catch a prey animal in under 20 seconds will not pursue it, a dog on the other hand (Keep in mind canids also usually hunt in packs,) will chase their prey for long distances, though usually not at full speed.

    Another thing that would be interesting to know is stamina. Cheetahs can only maintain a sprint for 400-500 metres. Greyhounds are sprinters, but canines in general are stamina hunters, so it'd be interesting to see to what extent that holds true for greys.

    I noticed something that you guys didn't mention:
    When the Cheetah is running it's front legs are pretty much just pushing it's upper body off the ground and then the big powerful back legs come in and EXPLODE forwards with mind-boggling force, but the Greyhound has almost as much distance between the push off the back legs and the front legs. Anybody else notice that?

    • @DMPontes
      @DMPontes 4 года назад

      The dog learned all the tricks. All but one.
      It uses one back leg at the time...
      The cheetah, instead, uses both back legs at the same time, generating much more power to move forward...

      it might be worth noting the size difference as welll. a cheetah will have bigger strides and travel longer distances by default, given the fact its got a large body and longer legs.
      if a greyhound was built a little bigger, Ide be more inclined to compare it with a cheetah.
      or perhaps if they analysed how a high performance greyhound raced against an experienced, 'smaller' cheetah

      ***** No, some species have more genetically diverse than others. Thousands of years ago, cheetahs went through something called a population bottleneck. That's when a lot of members of species don't reproduce, so the future generations are directly related to the small number that did reproduce. This reduces genetic variation within a species.

    People,who are saying dogs are more intelligent, how would you know? Cheetah are not tamed animals where as a dog is, also dogs are social animals they will listen to you, cats except for lions are not social animals and won't listen to you at all. They may be more intelligent but you won't know cos they won't listen to you no matter what. Can't make a solitary animal tamed and make it do stuff you want it to and show its intelligence

    • @Jessiechan123
      @Jessiechan123 8 лет назад +1

      Why does the fact that they listen to humans matter when if comes to their intelligence? It's their natural behaviour,without human interference, that really depicts how intelligent they are.Just because we've been able to domesticate dogs and train them doesn't mean big cats are any less intelligent or able, that's a pathetic statement you're making.

    • @TheAverageGamer_CJ
      @TheAverageGamer_CJ 8 лет назад

      +Jessica Oladuji dogs are only called intelligent in the wild cos they work together, not cos they do math puzzles. Literally cos they work together and hunt a prey in a form... All cats except lions are solitary. You obviously don't understand this and going off the basis they're called smart and you don't know why or how they are smart.

      @maffy715 8 лет назад +6

      "Animals that live in social groups are always smarter than solitary animals. This is because social animals must engage in problem solving every time they interact with another animal in the group... It [also] appears that dogs are becoming progressively more intelligent over time while cats have remained at much the same level of mental ability that they had when we first domesticated them. This means that not only are dogs smarter than cats, but the gap between the species is increasing over time."

      butlerproman Yes, the greyhound would run for longer because canids are more of endurance runners

      butlerproman if you breed cheetahs for the same purposes as you do this dogs I believe they can show good stamina too. They just don't need t in the wild and it's a waste of energy for them. And dog can run to exhaustion as it will be fed anyways after.

      Dmytro Skrypka I believe cats naturally use more energy, which is why housecats, wild cats and big cats are often seen just lying around. While dogs, wolves etc. are able to use that energy more efficiently aka more stamina.

      butlerproman I would like to see a car race between the two. Each one driving its own lambo. I've heard some greyhounds learn stick driving pretty quickly.

    There was a great analogy on ‘Top Gear’ once where they said that Greyhounds were rear wheel drive! It was a good analogy because the Greyhound does seem to put most of its power down through its hind legs - the Cheetah seems to put power into all four limbs, which is probably why it’s faster despite being bigger and heavier than the Greyhound....

    Still pretty damn impressive that a greyhound is in the ballpark with the cheetah.

      @stephen john gray If the Cheetah is at 70mph, who is in the ballpark with it... the Greyhound at 45mph, or the average person who can't even crack 20? Don't argue semantics.
