In Vârânasî, because the Ganga is there far from its spring, the water is very polluted (even if i have seen a positive change during the years, and even now there are boats which clean it, almost every day. Nice !) . So i would answer : i wouldn't recommand to swim in, you could wash your clothes (even if it's not the "purpose" of this sacred river) but definitely you should NOT drink it, even after boiling it would i say. But some locals do it, but they live here since their birth...And : it has been proven by science that at it spring at least the Ganga has some properties that makes its water special in a sense that it can fight against germs. You can find informations about this if you search.
@@travelevel Do you think the Ganges river could benefit from a hydroelectric dam and water filtration system near the source or maybe near the end mouth of the river?

Ganges is one of the dirtiest rivers in the world. People don’t just shit and throw trash into it, they even dump human bodies of people instead of burying or burning. Don’t risk getting infection and parasites in this river of shit. This river is treated by the people who live next to it like most unholy river in the world.
Aww kid, all those thing can decompose and will not cause any disease. The problem arises bcz of rapid industrialisation and connecting sewers to river. The upper part of Ganges and crystal clear like in Rishikesh etc Himalayas. It gets dirty in downstream.
