So I hope this AGS-101 Backlight screen mod Tutorial helps you. As you know, I took the AGS-101 screen from a Game Boy Advance SP. Be careful because there's two types of Game Boy Advance SP: the ones with the AGS-001 screen (frontlit) and the ones with the AGS-101 screen (backlit).
Besides doing the GBA backlit mod, I also customized the color of the shell (by painting the GBA shell) and the buttons to match the Super Nintendo (in Europe) or the Super Famicom (Japan) color scheme. So here's teh complete tutorial for a SNES themed Game Boy Advance with the AGS-101 Backlight Screen mod.
Be aware that depending on your GBA serial number, you'll need a 40 pin screen adaptor or a 32 pin screen adaptor.

JordiPower Are you keeping your GBA backlight mod or selling it on eBay?
Nice mod, but I do hope that everyone keeps in mind, third party Backlit GBA screen replacement kits are back in stock again (not sure how) for reasonable prices. Much less work, no cannibalizing a AGS-101 and potentially cheaper than nicer AGS-101's (though if you DO want to cannibalize one, for God's sake get one that needs refurbishing at the very least).

I was going to say, does anyone know of any good places online for non-working AGS-101 with working screens (or, maybe, a place that sells decent non-original AGS-101 screens)? I don't want to pay $50 for a non-original AGS-101 screen that might not even be nearly as good as the proper one... Thanks.

This was super helpful. I did this mod months ago, but im still watching this vid cuz its entertaining.
This has been one of my dream projects for the longest time and this was an excellent tutorial. Your attitude about the whole thing made it entertaining to watch as well. I still have zero experience working with this kind of stuff, but I love fixing up old consoles I find at thrift stores, and you're giving me a lot of confidence to try some heavier modding like this. The only problem I have with this mod is that people are cannibalizing perfectly good GBA SP consoles, we'll end up regretting this when we see SP AGS-101 consoles going for crazy amounts. 😖
I agree. The one I used was kind of scratched (you can't see it in the video very well), but I get what you say.
The only regret will be when the screens are too expensive to salvage. Clearly no one who does this mod wants an sp
watching this in 2019, you were right, they're going for 80-120 USD online, better imo to buy the chinese reproductions which are still only about $60.
Whats annoying about it now is that trying to find an AGS-101 to refurbish and reshell is waay too expensive.
Nobody likes the SP that's why they're taking the screen out of it

Piskel it's easy bro just ship to silicon lab with note saying please reverse engine my gba into device with better lit screen, HDMI and thinner. This also works within mordem technology, for example if you are sick of bloat ware on your Android just mail it to Anonymous and explain the issue and it comes back rooted and full of hack tools for example if you need to borrow the wifi password of nearby network you just use the new built in tools.
I'd say the most difficult part is the soldering, other than that it's fine

Hey! Very good video. Just something I think you should add to it: there are two types of AGS-101 screens, the one called type A with a brown tab, and the one called type B with the white tab. Type B screens are more common nowadays, and if you try to do the mod with a type B screen and a 40 pin type A adaptor (the most common one also) the result will be a very washed out unplayable screen, which was my problem.
Now, what I suggest is that you buy a type B cable from somewhere and to the mod with that, but in case you really cant, this reddit post explain some extra modding steps to make it really work. www.reddit.com/r/Gameboy/comments/5r8i0e/ags101_gba_mod_image_retention_fix_40pin_white/

Very nice video! The painting part was still pretty informative. I'm planning to do this mod with an original screen that I got from a beated-up AGS-101. I'll probably refurbish the AGS-101 with a replacement screen later.

You dont need balls, just a cutter and a soldering unit and a AGS-101 screen from china :p

Your screen might not be so bright because of incompatibility between screen and adapter. There are A and B types of screen and each type needs specific adapter. If incorrect one is chosen, the brightness will be lower, and also there may be some shadowing effects.

Where did you buy your buttons or did you paint them? They are the exact colors I need. I saw you spray paint the shell, but I may of missed the part of you spray painting the buttons since I skipped through the video.
