  • What a great day we had bagging our 15th Historic English county top.......Brown Willy [ possibly from Cornish Bronn Wennili meaning "hill of swallows" or from Cornish Bronn Ewhella meaning "highest hill" ] is a hill in Cornwall. The summit, at 1,378 feet above sea level, is the highest point of Bodmin Moor and of Cornwall as a whole. It is about 2+1⁄2 miles northwest of Bolventor and 4 miles southeast of Camelford. The hill has a variable appearance that depends on the vantage point from which it is seen. It bears the conical appearance of a sugarloaf from the north but widens into a long multi-peaked crest from closer range.

I can see Rough Tor from about 1/4 mile away from my house.
Been there many times for the shrooms!
The locals pronounce it the same way that Slough is pronounced.
    Thanks for a great vid.

Another absolutely stunning hike Stephen and another county top done. You are right. That old abandoned farmhouse would be a great bothy. Stone Circles always get me thinking. Not only the 'what were they used for' but also I wonder what the land looked like back then. Was it all forest? I normally end up taking too much water but not drinking enough. But that was after what you did here, I was out. Thank you for sharing, Stephen. Another great hike. I really enjoyed it.

If a man dreams of a great pile of stones in a nightmare, he would dream of such a pile as the Cheesewring. All the heaviest and largest of the seven thick slabs of which it is composed are at the top; all the lightest and smallest at the bottom...i have seen them before...like you say amazing place...thanks for watching and commenting, it's appreciated.

Mystical place. There was nearby a mine shaft or something like that that a bloke called Daniel lived and or died in. Soo many stories and ancient structures around there. Pretty sure that cottage was lived in when i passed it circa 1984.

AC/DC sang 'It's a long way to the top' but I bet you wished you'd picked a more direct route there, Stephen. Looked a bit of a long route on a warm day. The rocks on the moors are very photogenic - I'd be happily clicking away for sure. Another one ticked off the list though.

We did almost that exact walk a couple of years ago but in reverse. We were staying locally and our landlady told us that almost that area is owned by her elderly neighbour. During lockdown this woman drove out to that carpark every day to report to the police anyone who had travelled to walk. Missing the irony that she had also travelled!

Its spelt Rough Tor but it's pronounced Row (as in argument) Tor. We Cornish like to confuse the English. Brown Willy was called Bron Willhay before it was anglisised which translates as highest hill, although some say it means hill of swallows.
