  • Dr. David Silverman, Curator-in-Charge, Penn Museum, Egyptian Section, presents the opening lecture in the Great Wonders Lecture Series. The most recognized of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, Giza's pyramids and Sphinx have fascinated humankind for more than 5,500 years. At 240 feet long and almost 70 feet high, the Sphinx is Egypt's largest statue; at a height of 481 feet, the Great Pyramid was the world's tallest built structure for several thousand years. Many questions, debates, and theories focus on their purpose, age, origin, and creators. Did indigenous peoples, slaves, or ancient aliens build them? Did secret chambers lie within? Could pyramids magically preserve their contents? Did the elements in the solar system guide their placement on the Giza plateau?

To figure out who built the Great Pyramid, check the township building permits.

These numbers for staffing and grouping for men to build this are so arbitrary. If you don't know exactly how it was built, how do you know how many people it took. "100,000 sounds like a good number right?"

So many valid questions about the validity of these old presumptions these days. How about addressing them?

Thank you very much David - nice to be on the receiving side for a change, even though I only understand things in metres! Actually, I'm giving this talk tomorrow & I was thinking while watching this that I would be saying mostly the same things. So it looks like we both got it right! Actually, this is the first time I've heard an American pronounce Abydos correctly!

      I hope you’re a better public speaker at least...Lord Have Mercy :(

They had advanced technology... Lost technology, if you know what I mean...
Those workers weren't cutting and sanding the stones like we are told. If they were doing that, they would STILL be building it

This guy unaware of Herodotus, Diodorus siculus, Strabo and Plutarc. They all were roughly 2200 year ago in Egypt and did extensive research on pyramid, they also asked questions to local priests who built this pyramid, they said we don't know because it was built before great flood.
Mates, please listen views of Erich Von Daniken, everything will be clear regarding pyramids. Savvy?

Maybe they built pyramids to PREVENT aliens from landing flying saucers on them.
(Spoiler alert - launch pads and runways tend to be flat)

He feels uncomfortable speaking in front of a crowd or camera, doesn't seem familiar with his lecture, doesn't even sound like he feels good.
      Hope he doesn't have students.

Dr. David Silverman's delivery is poor. It's embarrassing to see any curator in charge that stumbles his words with 'um' as much as he has in this lecture.

Notwithstanding the lack of presentation skills, Dr. Silverman explained nothing and added nothing whilst thoroughly avoiding any of the great mysteries and pervasive questions involving the origins, construction methods and purpose of the pyramids of Giza. A presentation empty of content and designed to assert a view of these monuments that doesn't make any scientific sense. An undergraduate student could have done a better job at exciting the audience.

Museums in the USA (the current reigning empire), and Britain (the previous empire) should give back the stolen cultural treasures of Egypt. I don't want to hear whatever exculpatory rationalizations you tell yourselves if you do possess any conscience. You know these treasures are not ours. Give them back. It's embarrassing
