Absolutely admire your transparency and I respect you giving Whatnot a go. There's no shame in saying it's not for you. Some of those items you would have made a great profit on in just a few weeks of listing. Absolutely no gain in letting the resellers profit from your hard work. 💪
It will be refreshing to watch someone who's not promoting whats it every five minutes. Apreciate the honest review and all the great advice. Keep up the good work.
I'm not really surprised you have put in more effort for such little gain, I think a lot of resellers were hood winked into believing it would be very successful. All credit to you for your honest appraisal of the experience. Now back to high profit items! Keep up the great videos.
Great video!! love your honesty. Don't think its a bad thing for your business as I don't think I've watch half as many reselling videos since they were banging on about whatnot. Personally I have no appetite to watch reselling videos on whatnot and I don't think many other people do as its not relatable. We come here for you with your down to earth personality and the interesting things you pick up!!
As a buyer, I would rather go on Ebay and get what I want quickly than sit through a 1-2 hour show on Whatnot, I've dipped into a couple of Whatnot auctions but never bought as I get bored after about 10 minutes.
likewise, I've bought a couple things on whatnot but found it difficult to find what you're after + some sellers are terrible and either take forever to ship the item, cancel your order with zero explanation or are VERY rude on their livestreams - chat with regulars but ignore newcomers, as an example I joined a livestream of a guy selling some nike shoes, was just me + a couple others there, no one buying anything and he asked if anyone had requests, I asked to see some shoes in a UK 7 and it took a good 5-6 times of asking for him to answer to which he said he had but couldn't be bothered showing before continuing to ask for requests, a regular he seemed friendly with asked to see the UK 7's and only then did he do it..
Great Video George ive noticed prices dropping on whatnot over the last few months, i only buy thought about selling but just seems to much work for little reward ill stick to Grabbing bargins buying from there 😀
I love you honest review on whatnot. I started on whatnot doing clothes and soon binned off clothes. I now sell toys and lego on whatnot amazing profit in it
@@redruMGenerationreally?…I think you’ll find whatnot is now full of resellers looking to grab bargains. There’s so few shows, maybe it works for pokemon cards
Totally admire the transparency George, not the video I was expecting if I'm honest! Alot of work and expense for little return it seems, must be a little soul destroying at times during your shows when something sells for peanuts! I've actually stopped watching a couple of RUclips channels because every other word was something to do with WhatNot, the only reason they seemed to be actually uploading a video once in a blue moon, as opposed to how often it was before, was to try and encourage people to sign up to WhatNot!!
Moving forward I’m thinking of using Whatnot again as part of the business model purely for liquidating stock, list on eBay, Vinted, Depop for 3 months if it’s hasn’t sold then do 1 whatnot show to clear anything that hasn’t sold, keeps the cash flowing and gets rid of dead stock.
As a buyer/reseller whatnot needs a desktop site. I need to do things on my phone, I can't sit through auctions (people I introduced also feel this way). It's the type of content I'd want running in a window on my computer while I do other things. Also from a content perspective, it's more interesting to see you pick up cool things that go for good money on ebay.
Love your videos been watching for years. In was thrilled when you helped me with my tax return in Jan and “uncomplicated” things 😊 I just see what not is like a live Vinted and people want it all cheap. And you have to give up an evening to do it I’m seeing a rollercoaster over on depop but it’s on my terms and time and fewer risks
Just wanted to say a massive thank you for your transparency with this video. Whatnot comes off as a MLM/Pyramid scheme kinda feel. I've only ever known resellers buy from whatnot, I doubt anybody from the public would want to tune in at a certain time, sit through an hours showing to see if they can win a Ralph Lauren shirt when they can buy it instantly on eBay. You gave it a good go, and it didn't work out, but at least you tried. People often do moan about eBay, and rightly so in some ways, but it's clearly the best reselling platform. Stick to eBay George, can always do other things on the side!
Thanks for the honest appraisal. Sometimes you tubing resellers show how brilliant everything is and all the money they are making (without the downside). Whatnot does sound like sellers selling to sellers. I resell myself but am going back into full time work as I just couldn't make it pay all the bills. A mix of struggling to find stock, and Royal Mail doing my head in (ever increasing costs but poorer service). But what I've learnt in the last two years is invaluable, and it will continue as a side hustle until I pick it back up full time in retirement - hopefully!
I notice that it is only resellers ( mostly) that have even heard of Whatnot, so many people i talk to have never heard of it, Whatnot needs to promote it to the everyday buyer, maybe it’s something that will get better in the future 🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️ Thank you for your honesty on this 😊
Such an honest video I've so much respect for you making it as there is so much smoke and mirrors videos online on how reseller XYZ is making so much dosh when in reality a blind man can see it doesn't add up. George I am concerned though you are still considering doing it once a month when you already know it's not worth it, you're losing time and money so to do it in the hope that you will maybe reach some profit surely your time and effort would be better spent on focusing on the platforms you know are working for you man? Thanks for doing all the videos man you're a good guy and a grafter, but if I was you judging from this video and from other's saying the same thing I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole man.
Don't do £1 starts. Start the items at the minimum you are happy with, and if they don't sell, then list them elsewhere. If the £1 start buisness model doesn't suit you, then don't do it.

It was me who bought those Budweiser t-shirts from you. I feel awful mate. Really sorry, I did expect to pay more. In all honesty, they'll just go in our shop for 10 each. Students love that type of thing. I'm with you too by the way. We're slowing down whatnot and just doing the odd show to shift unsold stuff. I'm pretty sure it will die sooner or later.
Thanks for being transparent George, it’s refreshing. I feel like the giveaway/gambling thing is uncomfortable like you say. I feel like it’s not worth the work at all
Good that you are re-assessing what works best for you. Maybe use your knowledge to buy good items from WN to sell on eBay and hopefully this video will do well for you to recoup back some of your expenses!
Could you try raising the starting bid so that you can start the bid at what you paid so that you don’t loose money and then if it doesn’t sell then you can put it on eBay etc
I felt that once you started Whatnot other things took a back seat as they needed to due to time restraints I expect. This for me has meant I don’t enjoy your videos as much as I used to and recently I’ve stopped watching. Hopefully things will be back to normal now and the videos will pick up 👍🏼
It seems like any item, traders selling to other traders rarely make much unless they got a great price in the first place. If it is a good item, then sell it to a consumer and not another trader.
I was contemplating What Not for stuff I can't sell on Ebay but that's it. Having a platform where prices are set is much better. As What Not gets more popular there is more competition so perhaps less viewers. I also nearly broke Ebay fund pot buying on What Not as got carried away 😬 I really appreciate your honesty on this video because it looks good watching shows but I like the realism you are bringing.
Great video as always, always thought the idea of whatnot seemed good but your selling stuff for vinted prices with alot of work Im sure there are other 'big'resellers out there going for it in a big way, but just cant see how its that profitable, sourcing, doing the show, packaging and posting, some doing 800 items a week! The time in that is crazy. Time is money, i just stick to ebay, works well for me, minimum time, max money.
Great video, you were more like me... Selling JVC back to the FUTURE camera's for 200 OR vintage ski jackets for 75...with eBay. Whatnot the Idea behind IT sounds great but Bottom Line difficult to double or what we are used to...5fold our money with cool items! You were going tot do Vinted pro right?! I have 1500 feedback on vinted and love IT. Nice interaction with customers, no fees, sending out offers... eBay/vinted/Amazon most profitable combo in My eyes!! Have a good one!
I use whatnot to sell a variety of things. There's a lot of marketing behind selling cards and unless you are doing that, you are selling to mainly resellers in every other category, which slashes your margins even more. Especially in clothing. Its very peaks and troughs.
Im a clothing seller on whatnot (fourlittlebirds) and i find unless you have a specific item/type of clothing then you will struggle to profit on them. My 2 of my best shows was strictly a gothic/rock alternative clothes show and a levi jeans show where it was just strictly those items and nothing else. Ive done blind haul shows, womens mixed, plus size etc and always find doing a niche type of clothing show is the best. George is bang on here, lots of sellers are giving it a go but then leaving because there isn't enough profit for the work into it
Your right with the postage change, you just don’t know where you stand and when next it’ll increase and charge over £3 again. It was simple with evri it was a small amount extra per item so if you bought less you knew where you stood on every item. To make it worthwhile now you stop at around the 2kg point which is guesswork or go all out for over £7. The increase when you’ve got not idea how many items you’ll buy is off putting, I’ve bought less for sure - it should be sellers choice Royal Mail is not convenient for all yes evri broke items but that was down to packaging I found, as a buyer I’ve noticed a rapid decline in sellers I bought from a lot in the past
Nothing wrong with trying something new, the skill is knowing when it's not working. That's the position you are in now George. You are doing the right thing. Go back to what works, it's what been your success.
I would have bet on this outcome the day you announced whatnot. A quick turnover is nice on paper but I had learned from your videos over the years and knew it would hurt you to see quality bits going for so much less than they would have on ebay.
this is exactly what happened with me on whatnot, it just happened quicker than it did for you. i think clothing is a silly hard market these days as its soooo easy to get it. i know people doing figures or cards on whatnot and do well so it has its audience, just dont think clothing is the correct things to try and sell unless you're picking it up for pennies
Very honest video, sorry this isn’t working out for you but best not to continue when you losing money. Other sellers seem to do well I wonder what the key to making a good turnover is?
Hey george i don’t know much about whatnot… is it possible to have a reserve for your items, so if they don’t sell over that amount you don’t sell it and then have it on again next time? The bidding reminds me of eBay and I’ve found that way of selling hasn’t worked for me for clothing. It is a pain to have things hanging around for longer, but they sell for more that way. Don’t even get me started on the giveaways!
Seems like there’s a mismatch between your cost of goods and asking price. Why start your auctions so low vs COG? It’s like 99p auctions on eBay - don’t start an auction (on ANY selling platform) for lower than the minimum you’d like to sell it for, otherwise chances are you’ll make a loss. Even if if you sell something for the price you paid you’ll still make a loss after fees and postage so why do it?
When you first started doing Whatnot I said it wouldn't last, wouldn't catch on and would go the way of poshmark, in the comments, and got a fair bit of hate for being negative. It still will go the way of Poshmark. Great content George.
Great, honest video George. You gave it a go and have to say braver than I am. Is anyone doing well selling clothes currently? I get the feeling that if anything ismore than a £1 they dont want to know. T
clothing is not ideal for whatnot, theres to many limitations for the buyers... sizing, style, gender ect. You'd be much better of selling items like plush, games, collectibles ect
Clothing is the hardest category for profit on whatnot. Jon Luc found his niche through Charlottes passion of cosmetics and skin care. Sorry it hasn’t worked out for you. I’m sure you are not alone. Keep up your eBay YT content. Best wishes to you and your family x
I have been buying off whatnot the last month, after joining over a year ago. In the beginning, when it was all cards, i had no interest, but thought id give it another go. I feel like its a social network you have to work at, connect with other sellers on the platform and do raids as such to do well. I also think having strongly themed shows works best, ive bought alot of carhartt off labelhunters the last couple weeks because they do a carhartt show once a week. I think they must buy bulk for very cheap per item from the states. I think if you're going forward set your price of items at where you wont lose money, so if it cost you £1, start it at £2 and so on. And if more expensive items dont sell then it gives you the option to list it yourself elsewhere. I dont have a following so i dont think id do well at all on whatnot. I think you need to lean into what you know and promote it alot on your socials ahead of time. Like vintage items, or maybe toy or lego. I know ive spent a stupid amount on minifigures recently. I think clothes is oversaturated.
After Poshmark, we didn't give Whatnot a go. Felt like we were giving items away for very little return. Wasn't worth trying Whatnot after our Poshmark experience.
Hi George, it's hard work whatnot I have I done a few shows and won't be doing anymore due to the price I was getting, it's all well getting good reviews but they don't pay the bills...it's a good platform for buying but selling I am a little in agreement with you ..cheers Paul
The margin for profit for you are not worth carrying on and your having to gamble your money to start items at £1 which end up going for nothing. It not a healthy business model at all. A break from whatnot is the right thing to do. Hey we learn and we move on 💪 Top content
You put a lot of effort into selling on Whatnot, with all the preparation of items beforehand and describing during the show, which from a buyer perspective is great because you know the item is going to be good. However because of this you did not sell many items in your shows and if the profits are minimal it is not surprising you feel down about Whatnot. I am sure your time would be better used selling on other platforms. Whatnot seems more suited to people who sell loads of items quickly during the show as long as they can source at a low unit price and back it up with excellent customer service when it goes wrong. Your way of putting time and effort into making sure each item is quality is better suited to eBay selling. Good luck with whatever you decide to do and thanks for all the RUclips content you have done over the years
I’ve never used whatnot at all, or poshmark before it, but if you are selling almost exclusively to resellers then over the summer is going to be toughest. Resellers always have an abundance of stock over the summer due to car boots etc Maybe take a break over summer months? It doesn’t even sound appealing the rest of the year though, basically becoming the middleman between charity shops/bootsales & eBay
Whatnot is great for collectibles . TCG / comics / sneakers / video games / sports cards. What it isn’t great for is things of personal use. Most famous sellers on there are basically selling collectibles / alternative investments
Been cleaning up on buying good items off whatnot shows from people, sorry it's happened sir but was pretty obvious from the get go that things on most shows go far too cheap.
I like ebay for buying. I've been tempted to buy on what not. Saw a mystery show last night.a mystery show. Pressure selling at its worst. Makes it bad for good what nor sellers.
Some items you will need to just have as buy it now's. So you don't lose money on them. But it's listing them same as eBay. So not saving time etc . Then have your items your don't mind losing out to much on if they go low as you buy cost is low anyways to have £1 starts
I found it hard to make whatnot work for me, I love the idea of it and can see it working for some so It makes me still believe it can but I'm torn, I want to do it because I enjoy it but it's not where the money is at for me.
George doesn’t talk about himself in the third person..oh, hang on! As others have said, you need higher start prices for the high end items- or not put them on Whatnot at all. Whatnot is really best for shifting stuff that’s been lying around for ages.I buy from Whatnot and I’ve done a couple of shows. It’s hard work, and changing over to Royal Mail has really buggered things up.I still like it, though, I just have to be realistic about it.
whatnot is great for the first few shows, after that terrible, might shift things fast but everyone wants stuff for nothing on there and the fees are quite high
I sell on Tilt and I know where you're coming from. Its great if you want to sell unwashed items from a bale, but if you wash, clean, repair and steam items (like I do) it's doesn't make sense
Maybe it’s just been me but the stuff I’ve bought from whatnot has been really poor and a waste of money. Mostly people flipping rag house stuff or tat and lying about the condition. Stuff with holes in, marks, fakes. To make things worse the whatnot support system is really bad and it’s hard to contact anyone about anything.
So much hassle for so little profit, with the exception of lego I'm looking for at least £20 profit per item. I don't have as many listed but I know that the ker-ching means I've made at least £20 after all fees.
Walk away from the what not - your sourcing and selling time is a massive cost to you as well. Also - you need to keep your enthusiasm high as a reseller working mostly on your own. Loosing money is a downer when you know what you could have made selling on other platforms. Maybe just source on there and wait for Vinted Pro 🥳 Well done for trying though 👍🏼
I just don't get Whatnot. As a potential buyer I find shows too long and frantic. And even the popular shows only get about 200 viewers. I have 2 twentysomething kids and they think its for old people! Whatever people say about Ebay, it gives you a global audience. I see so many items on global shipping. Admire your honesty George. Good luck
it seems whatnot is good for selling dead stock / quick clearance, not for your stuff, you could have sold 2-3 items on ebay and made more money than you made on all the items you sold last night.
@@acmramon people complain about high fees, but at least eBay promote themselves to bring the traffic. These other cowboys take the fees & the traffic is…other resellers that you have to bring to your show yourself
I haven't seen any promotion for Whatnot to the general public so I'm not sure what their strategy is for the medium to long term. I have heard so not sure if it's true that Whatnot pay some sellers for the giveaways and if so it screams pyramid scheme. No one can say you didn't give it your best.
Ive never understood why resellers would sell stuff on whatnot for less than ebay auction amounts when you should just be ebaying them on buy it nows 🤷♂️
How about trying to flip the Emperor's New Clothes on Whatnot? I could never get my head around now Whatnot could be an alternative to selling on EBay. If you are going to resell on Whatnot for much smaller margins then surely you need to be working with bigger volumes and/or to a bigger audience? People raving about Whatnot didn't seem to be doing either. Beats me. Best wishes, Roger.
Whatnot always sounded hard work for minimal gain

George is bang on here, lots of sellers are giving it a go but then leaving because there isn't enough profit for the work into it
I feel like you should maybe stick to items purchased under £2 and maybe anything more valuable start at higher than £1 so you’ll at least break even
Looking forward to this one ☝️
Interesting seeing other RUclipsrs who clearly get paid to promote whatnot say how good the app is. Glad you're fully transparent George
For quick flips at low margins do you eBay auctions would work better?
Nothing wrong with trying something new, the skill is knowing when it's not working. That's the position you are in now George. You are doing the right thing. Go back to what works, it's what been your success.
Lots of work for a limited stock - change is needed. Go for it 😊 Sue
I would have bet on this outcome the day you announced whatnot. A quick turnover is nice on paper but I had learned from your videos over the years and knew it would hurt you to see quality bits going for so much less than they would have on ebay.
Never heard of whatnot until you mentioned it on your channel
Very interesting. Appreciate your honesty 👌.
this is exactly what happened with me on whatnot, it just happened quicker than it did for you. i think clothing is a silly hard market these days as its soooo easy to get it. i know people doing figures or cards on whatnot and do well so it has its audience, just dont think clothing is the correct things to try and sell unless you're picking it up for pennies
Even if if you sell something for the price you paid you’ll still make a loss after fees and postage so why do it?
only sell things that are taking too long to sell on other platforms, its good for clearing stock that's not moving, not for making significant profit
You'd be much better of selling items like plush, games, collectibles ect
its not what your all about ! quirky and cool retro items . thats what your all about mate ! don't forget . thats what you need to get back to
summer slow down lad. pause it till the autumn then try again👌
yep its slow for me but not to worry
Just voted for you in the awards :)
@@Duelled me to, voted for someone last year who has done nothing but promote whatnot since 🙈
After Poshmark, we didn't give Whatnot a go.
Hey we learn and we move on 💪
Top content
Good luck with whatever you decide to do and thanks for all the RUclips content you have done over the years
Onwards and upwards, George! Whatnot is not my bag either! Roll on vinted pro!
Good call George...you tried but most importantly you recognise it's just not working and you're not the only one.
maybe just use what not for those items that are hanging around, collecting dust?
I’ve never used whatnot at all, or poshmark before it, but if you are selling almost exclusively to resellers then over the summer is going to be toughest.
Resellers always have an abundance of stock over the summer due to car boots etc
Maybe take a break over summer months?
It doesn’t even sound appealing the rest of the year though, basically becoming the middleman between charity shops/bootsales & eBay
Very informative TY
Whatnot is great for collectibles . TCG / comics / sneakers / video games / sports cards. What it isn’t great for is things of personal use. Most famous sellers on there are basically selling collectibles / alternative investments
Been cleaning up on buying good items off whatnot shows from people, sorry it's happened sir but was pretty obvious from the get go that things on most shows go far too cheap.
No reserves on Whatnot
I like ebay for buying. I've been tempted to buy on what not. Saw a mystery show last night.a mystery show. Pressure selling at its worst. Makes it bad for good what nor sellers.
I think I know the show you mean..
The t shirts would have made great profit on ebay your items look quality
whatnot is great for the first few shows, after that terrible, might shift things fast but everyone wants stuff for nothing on there and the fees are quite high
Good luck
People don’t want to sit through a show and wait to bid on something. It’s the original eBay idea with a webcam, I’ve always said that.
What not probably best to use for stuff that don’t shift. EBay is bigger worldwide audience
can you cancel the orders?
So disheartening indeed . I did two shows and big losses 😂
It’s funny that there are other sellers who sell fast fashion and getting more profit .
it seems whatnot is good for selling dead stock / quick clearance, not for your stuff, you could have sold 2-3 items on ebay and made more money than you made on all the items you sold last night.
Ditch whatnot asap
Nothing beats ebay!
@@acmramon people complain about high fees, but at least eBay promote themselves to bring the traffic. These other cowboys take the fees & the traffic is…other resellers that you have to bring to your show yourself
But seriously who’s spending £30 on a single item to put on Whatnot and be auctioned off from £1?🥴
Royal Mail killed Whatnot. More expensive and poorer service
Evri is definitely the worst service and royal mail is a rip off.
Where are the Whatnot sellers getting their stock from, to sell for £1 or £2?
