    Guys! These rice paper butterflies are so cute and realistic! And I love that you can make them transparent, or opaque- both ways are beautiful.
    The method is straight forward, but I'll admit, you need time to let them dry. That's just rice paper...... it takes forever to dry! But it's definitely worth it!
    Spring is here and I'm sure I'll be making more butterfly cake decor. I hope you guys do too!
    Let me know what you think, and if you have any questions!

    Great tutorial! I'm really thankful when artists, such as yourself, share their techniques. I have a pastry degree, and have done a lot of cakes and desserts for people, however, I have not worked much with wafer or rice paper. Life is really busy right now and I was going to suck it up and order wafer paper butterflies online for the baby shower cake I'm doing for my daughter. I thought it would make things easier. The shipping (for a piece of wafer paper!) was more than the cost of the sheet of butterflies! Seriously, $25 for a sheet of printed butterflies, that I had to cut out and do all the things with. On top of that, the colors were not what I wanted, but I was going to try to make it work (by not using most of the product that I ordered). After watching your tutorial, I'm confident that I can make exactly what I want. Thank you!

    Made some today and I ran out of time to make their little bodies so I just stuck them on the buttercream on the cake and it turned out just as pretty as a wanted for my best friends heavenly birthday. Blue butterflies is my sign designated to remind me she is still with me 🦋

      That’s a great question. I would keep it in a container so it doesn’t get dusty and doesn’t absorb moisture from the air, but I’ve been fine leaving these out for weeks. The worst that’s happened is their wings curl up a bit. But I imagine because it’s rice paper, the environment really plays a big part in the curling.

    These are so beautiful and your tutorial is simple but I'm having such a hard time cutting them out when they come out of the oven. Do I need to let them rest first? They keep folding over and sticking to each other and I end up scrapping the whole thing. 10 minutes may not be long enough?

    • @FiveTwoBaker
      @FiveTwoBaker  2 года назад

      Oh no! That's so frustrating! They're definitely going to be floppy with 10 minutes, we just have to try to manage them as best we can..... BUT If your wings are large or just way too floppy, try using an exacto knife to cut them out. I actually just made my last water color butterfly on IG using an exact knife to cut it out. This way you don't have to lift them off the mat and risk them folding over. If not, you can definitely try a bit longer in the oven (my oven might just run a bit hotter than yours), but check on them one minute at a time after 10 minutes. Because once they get too hard, there is no going back 😩 (I sadly speak from testing experience). I really hope they work this time!

    • @FiveTwoBaker
      @FiveTwoBaker  3 года назад

      With the baking sheet upside down. Does that make sense? This way it’s as if the mat and rice paper are on a completely flat surface, no walls. 💖

      The antenna are just the middle parts of the store bought stamens. They’re thin and sturdy, that’s why I used them. To keep them flat you can lay anything you have. I just popped some veiners on bc that’s what was closest to me at the moment.

    Bonjour vous faites de magnifiques tutos , j'adore et merci beaucoup pour vos partages , que dois je taper dans la barre de recherche pour trouver les pistils que vous utilisez car moi celle que je trouve ont une petite boule sur le bout et la tige n'est pas rigide comme vous c'est comme un fil donc sa ne tiendra pas pour l'enfoncer dans la pâte à sucre , merci beaucoup pour votre future réponse .

      I’d search for peony stamen. They’re not wire, but they’re reasonably rigid.

    I loved it. My rice paper is really thick how or where can I get those? Thanks

    • @FiveTwoBaker
      @FiveTwoBaker  3 года назад

      Thank you! I’m so glad! If your rice paper is thick I’d start with that as a tester. Just soak it to see how it dries. If you go too thin, you run the risk of it cracking very easily bc the thinner the rice paper, the more brittle (or atleast that’s been my experience). My rice wraps feel a bit thick also, but I like that. Aside from that, I shop around for them at my grocery store and just grab from their selection. I’ll try and see if I can get you the brand I use.....I’m sure I still have some around. 💖

    Hi,
    Would this work without the silicone sheet? Like can I use parchment paper instead? Or would it stick to that?

    • @FiveTwoBaker
      @FiveTwoBaker  3 года назад

      Great question! Silicone sheet is needed. I believe someone tried a glass pan and it worked. But the silicone ensures it doesn't stick. With parchment the problem is it will get wrinkly because of the liquid. I hope this helps!

    How long in advance can I do them? Once done, can a store them from about 22 days/ one month?

    • @FiveTwoBaker
      @FiveTwoBaker  2 года назад

      I've stored them for that long, but honestly, because it's rice paper, it may move around a bit the longer you leave them out. It wants to curl up just a bit. However far in advance you make them, I'd make sure to store them somewhere away from dust and sunlight so they don't catch the dust or fade. So maybe like a box. I hope that helps!

    These are so beautiful and would like to make them or at least start tonight...but I do not have a transparent silicone mat. Can I put it on parchment paper to be able to trace the butterfly drawing and then transfer it to the silicone mat to bake, or can I keep it on the parchment paper to bake?

    • @FiveTwoBaker
      @FiveTwoBaker  3 года назад

      Thank you! That's a good question. I don't use parchment paper because it shrivels when wet and so then my rice paper also shrivels. If yours doesn't do this, then you might be fine. Hope that helps! ❤️

    • @rantille4883
      @rantille4883 3 года назад

      @@FiveTwoBaker Hi thank you for your quick response, after multiple trial and errors ... The parchment paper did exactly that, it shriveled, my husband suggested a piece of glass, to which reminded me that I had a piece of tempered glass from when I did/do buttercream transfers. The only concern I had was that it would stick to well and not come off. We had success! 😊
      Once it is baked though, I need to transfer it right away to the silicone mat or it will be really difficult to take off the glass. Although, just in case I will be investing in a new more transparent mat.

    Also can they be made a week in advance and how to store them?

    • @FiveTwoBaker
      @FiveTwoBaker  3 года назад +6

      They sure can. I’d store them in a container so they don’t collect dust and they avoid moisture. The moisture will make them want to curl up a bit. I’ve kept mine out and they’ve curled just a bit, but it depends on climate. I’ve also noticed that my opaque butterflies (the ones I add cornstarch too) don’t curl at all when I leave them out. I hope this helps you some! 💖

    Hello, I have a question. How well do these or any other rice paper decorations hold up in the refrigerator or freezer if on a cake?

    • @FiveTwoBaker
      @FiveTwoBaker  3 года назад

      Honestly, I cannot say. I would not add the decor to the cake until it is being delivered, or on site. Rice paper is pretty sturdy once dry, but I imagine the temperature difference from the fridge, to outside would cause it to bend and warp faster.
      Long story short, I don't know from experience, but wouldn't recommend it.

    Is there a substitute for alcohol to paint the body of butterfly?

    • @FiveTwoBaker
      @FiveTwoBaker  2 года назад

      I get this question a lot. Here are my recommendations on what to look for & thoughts, because I'm not exactly sure why you can't use alcohol, so I'll toss out anything I can think of and hope it gives you options:
      Clear Lemon extract- like the type you would use in frosting or cakes, but it's 80% alcohol.
      Evaporex (bakers use this as a substitute for vodka)- 100% food grade alcohol.
      Baker's Spirits aka rejuvenators spirits aka edible paint dilutor - Also 100% food grade alcohol.
      Finally, Water - Downside is because it will take longer to dry, you risk your fondant absorbing it, thus getting sticky, shiny fondant. It works! But you have to be more cautious with your painting.
      Basically everything is some type of alcohol, but different places and countries sell it under different names. I hope this helps and you can work with one of these! ❤️
