I really liked this. there's a tendency for a lot of westerns to be very long, languid and atmospheric [which is good sometimes but can be incredibly dull] but this is short as hell yet packs so much in. So many great moments; the encounter with the Swedish couple and the subsequent reveal that Ben eluded to was effectively shocking. I just loved it from start to finish, clear, concise storytelling done with style & the real points about native Americans is weaved into the whole thing very well As well as the Coen Brothers, I also got a Jim Jarmusch's Dead Man vibe from some parts [Ben Mendelsohn's character, who's great, could've been played by Iggy Pop I thought] I've watched this on demand on my laptop but I know for a fact it's showing at my local cinema at the end of this month so I'll definitely go to see it on a big screen. :)
Reviewers need to do their research. Maclean wanted to shoot initially in Colorado but chose to shoot in New Zealand because Fassbender's schedule is so full he was only available for the shoot during the month of November. So Maclean chose New Zealand because during our hemisphere's winters it summer down there which he needed for the look of the film.
I saw it with way too high expectations. It was alright. Tonally, it was all over the place. Very picturesque though. If you like movies with a clash between really dark elements and lighthearted Wes Anderson-ish stuff, you'll like it. Could have been great, but it's fine for someone's first feature film. I'd give it a 6, maybe 7 on a good day.

Why is there this thought that all films that take place in beautiful places need to be filmed in New Zealand? I love New Zealand, but it is starting to get to be the point that people assume that there is no beauty left outside of there. Japan still has gorgeous scenery (Last Samurai), and for "Big Sky Country" (as in this film), you could, I don't know, actually go to "Big Sky Country" in Montana, which is definitely not some industrialized wasteland. Now if there are financial reasons, I get that, it is a business and you need to make the smart/profitable decision, but this idea that it couldn't be filmed in the American West today is just plain foolish.

Studios film where they feel they can get best value for money. This is why most movies are filmed in Canada. Tax benefits and close to home. New Zealand, Australia and other places also offer studios tax incentives. A lot of nations do not, or offer less value. That is why they are filmed there. That why movies about New York for example are rarely filmed in New York, but usually Toronto.

This movie is a real romance flick. Most woman you fall in love with and will do anything for. Will not do the same for you.
