I don't think Run the Numbers is about the band's popularity. Considering the political themes of the album, it's probably more about certain politicians disregarding statistics, facts or the opinions of the people because of their own self-interest.
I think that'll whilst Get To Heaven was a catchy track with a lot of brilliant melodies, A Fever Dream was directed lyrically rather than musically. The background snares and layers have been pulled back to allow the lyrics to be a greater priority for the listener. I agree that some songs like New Deep or Big Game are too standard, but I am genuinely impressed with the very controversial, thought-provoking lyrics, which is matched by the eerie, lower key atmosphere. The change in direction is odd but intentional and despite the minor backfires, this a brilliant listen for anyone who wants to be introduced to the band, and can act as a gateway for people to follow into the older albums, especially _Arc_, which is a lot more slow, and love song orientated.
I agree with most of this but- I'm a really big fan of Arc and it isn't really love song oriented; it isn't its main focus. Sure, Duet can be considered very romanic, like a final hug at the end of the world, but I think the album is a lot more depression centered than love. 2 of the main singles, Kemosabe & Don't Try, are about depression, one comparing loneliness to Tonto & The Lone Ranger, and the other being a kind of healing song to close out the album. Choice Mountain is comparing evolution towards that unwillingness to do anything when in the midst of a depressive episode. Feet For Hands talks about a really sad story about a police officer that got shot and blinded, and then killed himself for living with that disability. House Is Dust is very self deprecating, talking about his spot in a divorce. Radiant ends with the line "I could make a difference but I don't, darling, I'm closing." Tracks like The Peaks & Undrowned seem to just scream out in pain. It's overall a really sad project, and the tracks I didn't mention have really glum looks at life, like Torso of the Week talking about how society perceives weight especially in women, and Cough Cough talking about toxicity in the work environment and greed in general. While you can perceive some tracks romantically , i really dont think Arc is meant to be that sort of album. It's a really sad and personal work, especially when you start looking into it further, and one of my fav records ever.
paRIS CS:GO They won't be if they keep making mediocre albums like that. If they came out with an album as well thought out and put together as Get To Heaven things could really turn around for them. But with popularity comes money and a lot more influence from the mainstream which is never a good thing in my opinion.
The lyrics are definitely the focus and highlight of this album- especially if you're British, you can hear the lyrics are commenting on Brexit in desire and Jo Cox's murder in ivory tower. Its a wonderful album and EE have always had a unique style of lyric writing that makes them my favourite artist- been a fan since Arc in 2013. Admittedly, nothing will ever be able to top Get to Heaven, but I adore AFD
I agree it sounds moodier and they changed direction quite a bit but I think it works it's just not quite what we expected from the band. I think if you're going to listen to it you should go in blind, no expectations, you'll enjoy it a lot more. I'd give it a 7 to 8
I had never heard of this band and looked up the album. I thought this review was a bit harsh and disagreed until I listened to Get To Heaven. I realized the reason this one is a six. Its a solid album but given the context of the first you expect more. I agreed with your 6ish score because it lacks the variety of sound in Get to Heaven. Heaven was bright, exciting, fresh at every corner, and although this album was good it just wasn't that.
One of the reasons I loved GtH so much was how fresh and exciting every track was (with a few exceptions), with plenty of energy and unconventional ideas to boot. I like a couple of tracks on this new one (Can't Do, Good shot good soldier, Put me together), but other than that it fell pretty flat for me and seemed like they played it too safe, especially on the other singles.
mellesms You know, seeing this comment reminds of how much a simple game like RuneScape left behind such a big legacy. To this very day, I still see people talking about RuneScape or referencing it in some way. All those glorious memories I have from this game.
Idk why people don't like arc. Some of the songs on there are my favorites of theirs. I always come back to that one. I used to like man alive a lot, but over time I've grown apart from it. Get to heaven is purely wonderful all the way through. The warm healer baseline still gets me everytime. This album was slightly disappointing, but I think that it'll grow on me over time. Just didn't hit me like arc or get to heaven did at first listen. Still though, love this band. Unique sound I can't find anywhere else
This album is so much darker thematically than get to heaven which deals with evolution and the corruption of power in the abstract. This album is much more rooted in the here and the now of the current state of affairs. It's not trying to be subtle lyrically and it's not trying to use the instrumentals as a sleight of hand to the dense lyrics in Heaven. It's got something to say about how easily we have been swayed by money hoarder fear mongering assholes whether that be by brexit and englands political shake up or via trump. I thoroughly enjoy the darkness this bright band offered with this project
This album has tons of explosive guitars passages, more than Get to Heaven. It has a beautiful and tense piano ballad which Get to Heaven didn't have. The songs and lyrics are passionate super emotional to an extent which we haven't heard since Arc. Desire is one of the catchiest songs they've ever written and still manages to be emotionally powerful. AND THE SONG STRUCTURES are pretty ambitious a lot of the time, I don't know what you're saying about a "lack of surprises." Get to Heaven was my AOTY and this will probably be too. Awesome album.
This was the most anticipated album for me and they ****sort of delivered****. Night of the Long Knives has proved that they've retained their signature sound. So that's one of my favourites, alongside Run The Numbers, White Whale and Ivory Tower. Didn't fancy the singles as much as I wanted to though. I rate it a 7.5/10. I JUST WANT THEM TO BLOW UP ALREADY. THEY DESERVE IT.
Real niggas pause halfway through the video, hit up the band/artist on Spotify, listens to the album, disagrees, but still respects Fantano and his opinions, and dips.
UGH, Anthony, cmon. I would have agreed with this review a lot more on my first few listens of the album but it never stopped getting better for me. It seems to me like you don't give albums like these (*cough* swing lo Magellan *cough*) enough listens before reviewing them and then you write them off and never fully appreciate them. I absolutely agree Can't Do is pretty incessant on it's chorus especially towards the end and desire suffers similarly but the rest of the track listing is really tight and has tons of amazing moments and sounds and lyrics. Big Game's guitar solo; amazing. Good Shot Good Soldier; 10/10 song. A Fever Dream's repetition continues the driving mood of the album and never stops being sonically engaging. Run the numbers and Ivory tower are badass. White Wale is a great closer and Put Me Together is a super cool track too! Oh well I guess there's just too many albums to review so you gotta take shortcuts and only listen to some things a few times before making the review. Get To Heaven was overall probably still a better album but it's pretty much impossible to top that album.
Thing is about this band, they have so many dimensions yet whilst having a consistent style. Some sides are gonna me more attractive than others, and vice versa. I would be disappointed if they did another Get to Heaven (still a ridiculously good album though). They've always had straightforward commercial appeal. A 6 is a bit harsh, give it another listen man. Maybe the rest of it will grow on you like Can't Do did. EE have always been growers to some degree for me.
I personally love this album. I understand why people are disappointed, but I think EE was enjoying more of these moody tracks. I hope this album grows on you, but if not thanks for the review :)
Fever Dream is def more of a grower. I love the fact that the band actually rock again in a number of key places. Get To Heaven was great but a bit too slick for me production wise.
This is actually my favourite album from EE so far. The opening one-two of Night Of The Long Knives and Can’t Do is stunning. I especially love the big synth pitch dives from Long Knives, which hint at some of the more interesting rhythmic ideas the album will deliver. I feel that you skipped over the solo section in Big Game, with its decidedly quirky drums and intervallic guitar work. Run The Numbers lyrics clearly address the expert-bashing we have seen from politicians - here in the uk anyway. Good Shot Good Soldier is about blindly following orders despite knowing it’s wrong, and the accompanying rhythm is so unbalanced, I feel it underscores that moral duality. The outro for A Fever Dream may be just one of those things that you love or hate, but I could listen to it forever. I wonder if, in the intervening years, your feelings have changed about this album?
Eh. Agree a little bit but I feel like cutting back on the mad instramentals was needed to persue the moodier stuff in this album. Big game is my favourite song on the album purely because the build up of mood penetrated by these almost Queenesque guitars pushed through anything they've done before. It wasn't another GTH because that would be silly. It took the things that theyve done well (layered crazy vocals, odd synths and loaded lyrics) and put it into a different mood and therefore a different album. I think you couldn't have crazy ass instramentals without rising the mood a little. It's my AOTY tho so I'm probs biased.
This LP grew on me a good deal. At first, I wasn't big on it, probably because I was annoyed that it wasn't "Get to Heaven." Still, it is disgusting how good Put Me Together is.
I actually feel this album shows great maturity after Get to Heaven, I don't think it feels like they're playing things safe, but instead comfortable dominated new territory. I've loved everything everything since Man Alive, and I actually think Get to Heaven is their worst LP.
After hearing your reasons why, I can definitely understand why you would give it a 6. While EE's instrumentals are of course very fun on Get to Heaven, the thing that really sold the band for me and drew me to them were the vocals, the melodies, and the songwriting. And it seems like you agree in this review that those things are still present here. Is it as consistent and as detailed an album as Get to Heaven? No, I can't say that. Nor can I say that this will be my AOY or anything like that. EE definitely took a more direct approach with a good amount of material on this record. Some people aren't gonna like that, and I get why, but I'd really be lying to myself if I said I didn't enjoy the shit of this thing. EE just write such awesome stuff to me.
Very solid album. Yes there's a few meh tracks but Desire, Can't Do, Night of the Long Knives, Good Shot, Good Soldier, A Fever Dream & Ivory Tower are fantastic. Overall 7/10.
I think this is an excellent entry point to the band. The songwriting is more at the forefront, the sound is rich but not overbearing, and the less catchy songs can train your ear to look for EE's more subtle song ideas.
6 or 7. It's too short to reach 8 without having songs of gold. Some solid tracks with an interesting song, but he needs to grow into this new sound with longer content.
I profoundly disagree with Evthony Thingtano on this occasion. I think this album is their best, most rounded release yet. Desire is just euphoric brilliance. I adore Get To Heaven but I think it drops off towards the end.
Based on what they proposed to this project, set the atmosphere in a dreamy nightmarish vibe, I think they did a great job. The album is different from GTH, but still is great.
I actually loved this album! I loved the last to Ev Ev albums too, and while their sound is less complex here, the songwriting is stronger than ever. Great review as always though!
Arc is dark as fuck. Everything they do is pretty dark, lyrically, but I think Arc has a very melancholy sound overall. Torso of the Week, Feet for Hands, Undrowned, The House is Dust, and the Peaks are all quite dark in tone, ranging from eerie to tragic. Feet for Hands is about a cop who offed himself after being blinded. In Undrowned, he describes a billionaire having his organs nailed to a city wall. In The House is Dust, he says "I wish I could be living, at the end of all living, just to know what happens." And even the ones that don't sound dark still have that kind of lyrical content. Radiant is at least partially about a nuclear apocalypse or cataclysmic event, for example. I love that you review EE's albums, though. More like... Everythony Everyta--no. It's not worth it.
I can agree with your remarks on the songs in comparison to Get to Heaven, but I'm feeling more of a strong 7 on this album. Run the Numbers, Ivory Tower, Can't Do, and Night of the Long Knives provide punchy, powerful jams. The other less bombastic cuts still provide an enjoyable listen.
@@noahm9759 Apparently not. I can appreciate his reviews, but it doesn't really seem like he leans into concepts of albums at all. Mostly talks about mixing, but stories and concepts are what does it for me. Oh wel.
I thought it was really good, but I'm gonna have to listen to it a lot more. Get To Heaven took me many listens to fully digest it but it's one of my favorite albums ever made.
I am totally on board with your impressions of Get to Heaven; the instrumental refinement alone is enough to set the bar very, very high. But to be honest, their new album is growing on me. This is a great review. I'm glad you're hopeful for them, because this band is growing and exploring - which is a lot more than most artists even dare to pursue these days. You say that there are more wins than losses in this project at the end of your video - would be great if you could focus on these a bit more; the tone and majority of the review is a bit invalidating of these wins.
I know where you're coming from - overall it feels like a comedown from the high that was Get To Heaven, and the instrumentation is less dense for the most part. I do definitely enjoy the album vibe overall (I think Good Shot, Good Soldier is one of their best cuts melodically, and the way White Whale opens up orchestrally is really cool) but the harder-hitting stuff like the opener and Ivory Tower are my favourites, I wish they'd done more like that.
It was honestly so disappointing since Get To Heaven was such a fantastic album. Whereas before I gave Get To Heaven my full attention I really just played A Fever Dream in the background while playing splatoon. Which is a real tragedy man cuz can't do made me really pumped for this release. Maybe next time they'll expand on the Get To Heaven sound which was so captivating and listenable. I would pretty much give them the same score you did melon.
I think this new album to me is more solid and cohesive than anything they have put out before. I also think that unlike get to heaven the album doesn't lose steam as it goes on and the song writing is more experimental than anything they have done before even though the general sound of the album is more harmonious. There are a lot of moments in this album where things are left to jam out and build up which is something which i always felt they needed to stop the tracks from feeling too relentless, i think perhaps some of the song writing just slightly falls short of there last album and is a little less punchy but for me they adds in a lot of aspects that i hoped to see in everything everything's music and i would probably give it an 8. As always, a pleasure watching the melon in action!!
I only really listened to Night of the Long Knives and To The Blade so when they announced they were playing where I work I immedietely made sure I would see them before I started working! It was great to see them live but I was underwhelmed by a lot of what they were playing, they didnt play the two songs that i had actually heard so i felt awkward, much of what you said in this review resonates with me but I still enjoyed seeing them live! I also helped clear the stage and load their gear once I started work haha :)
Why does everybody hate their first album so much?? There are only 2-3 duds but the rest are fantastic?? Much more dense and weird but still as catchy as Arc and GtH
Everything Everything is one of my very favorite bands, but I always feel like new albums are a slow burn for me. It took me several listens of Get to Heaven to really fall in love with it, so I'm giving A Fever Dream a little time to settle in before I write it off. For what it's worth, I really like Desire, and I feel like these more conventional singles might help me to actually convince some people I know to listen to the band for once. IDK, it was just cool to see anybody looking at this album/band.
Everything Anthony said here about the band tran- Sitioning from Get To Heaven to A Fever Dream is the same as Foals transitioning from Antidotes to Total Life Forever. The exact same pattern, outlining what he likes about these types of bands :) Just wanted to mention that :)
I still consider Arc and Man Alive their best albums. Particularly, I think Schoolin' from Man Alive is the best representation of their sound, and the sonic fireworks you mention.
I didn't what I expected with this album but I'm not dissapointed by no means. The laid back instrumentals allows even more catchy hooks like the opening track and Run the numbers IMO. Maybe for them this is a step towards learning to achieve more with less.
I quite liked it. I liked them more for their social commentary than crowded sound. And while Ivory Tower, Can't Do, and Good Shot, Good Soldier get that crowded feel, I can't help but stay along for the commentary for most of the songs.
This is fair. I do think you let your expectations colour your view on the record though. The change in tone and instrumentation seemed like a real sticking point for you, and I feel the same, but I can't help feeling like you'd rate this at least a safe 7 if it were a debut album from a new outfit. I'm glad you disliked Big Game as much as I did though. It was childish and a climbdown from some of the really intelligent and wry stuff in their catalogue.
I do love this record. In fact I love all their LPs. I think I gravitate towards the darker, more alternative sound. I did sense with this record that it was particularly miserable, especially towards the end. It finishes with White Whale, which sounds like a love song where love is seen as a hope to cling on to and appreciate, after having spent so much time thinking about dark things.
I could tell by the album cover that it was going to be a sub-par album. If you look at their covers before, they were funky and colorful. This cover is dark and unclear. I think the band is kind of having a bad patch, but are going to come back strong. Still going to buy the CD like the others. Hope they don't die out.
I have to say this pretty much lines up with my immediate impressions. I kind of feel like this album could overall be a bit of a grower though. Still to Get to Heaven is a fucking unassailable masterpiece.
Dude their first album is killer! I thought this one was much more arena-rock influenced, more grandious choruses but less intricate rhytms and grooves. It gets better by the end tho 6/10
I love your thoughtful reviews so much ... but oh I respectfully disagree with this one! I adore this album, am enjoying the slightly less busy sound relative to earlier work (which I occasionally find myself admiring more than liking) and love its depth and cohesiveness of sound. For me 'Good Shot, Good Soldier' is one of the best songs of 2017 - such a soaring chorus. I can't stop listening to it.
I'm drunk fadingo. i want you to know that you gave me a good thing and that is you made me more appreciative of the noise that you humans call "music" i love you.
Sadly totally agree, the songs on this album are way more straightforward and linear, I'd say Night of the Long Knives is the only song where the band sound as exciting and unique as they did on their last album
when it comes to moodiness, Arc took the cake. This album was a little more like Muse than they usually sound. I like their progress. Have to disagree with most of what you said, but s'all good.
I think the title track is fantastic as well. That piano ballad section in the beginning building to that instrumental explosion on the back end was one of the most beautiful moments on the album
A Fever Dream was alright, I would have given it to a light to decent 7. I totally agree that Get to Heaven is much better. But shoutout to, Night of the Long Knives, and Run the Numbers, some of Everything Everything's best tracks yet.
Was hoping it was a grower, but it's just not interesting enough and I already feel like I"m worn out on it after only a handful of listens. Was so excited for it too.
Leave The Engine Room, Two for Nero, NASA Is On Your Side, Choice Mountain, Undrowned, and The Peaks... Can we all agree that having less complexity or experimental tendencies doesn't = worse or not as good?
S-so you don't feel like a fat child in a pushchair with this album anymore?
I don't think Run the Numbers is about the band's popularity. Considering the political themes of the album, it's probably more about certain politicians disregarding statistics, facts or the opinions of the people because of their own self-interest.
Literally, a lot of their work is politically driven, especially no reptiles
Higgs has said it's a pro-Brexit song, despite his own (very strong may I add) anti-Brexit views.
I think that'll whilst Get To Heaven was a catchy track with a lot of brilliant melodies, A Fever Dream was directed lyrically rather than musically. ANYONE ELSE THINK EV EV ARE THE MOST UNDERATTED BAND IN THIS RECENT COUPLE YEARS?!?!?
paRIS CS:GO ...and I'm 40plus...
paRIS CS:GO They won't be if they keep making mediocre albums like that. If they came out with an album as well thought out and put together as Get To Heaven things could really turn around for them. But with popularity comes money and a lot more influence from the mainstream which is never a good thing in my opinion.
Ross Hornby Isn't Funny Listen to them performing "Schoolin'" in a Mahogany Session. Unbelievable. Pure talent
no
Samuel Rowark Everyone is entitled to their own opinion

Jogurt I like it because of that, it sounds like complete despair. Very claustrophobic. Luv iiiiitt
Yeah it almost feels like they set the bar a bit too high on their last record.
It's like people are expecting them to make GTH2. I'm glad they switched it up. Plus this record is a lot more cohesive than their first two LPs imo
Less experimental doesn't mean worse or not as good. If you listen to Man Alive, you'll know that A Fever Album is how they normally sound.
Turn that 6 upside down
Now you have a suitable rating for A Fever Dream
And add two
Exactly my thoughts! So much tidier than the first 2 records imo!

Damn it Fantano.

personally i've always been into higgs' voice, so the stripped back sound giving him a little more space was fine by me. i'd give it a 7/10.

Wow! I agree with the score for this album but I would have to say that Man Alive is one of my favourite albums ever. I like it more than even Arc.
This bands needs more attention! Their discography is great. Get To Heaven > Man Alive > Arc > A Fever Dream
*predicting a NOTGOOD/10 for XXXTENTACION, tran...*

'trangender' Great team work guys
fuck
6 or 7. It's too short to reach 8 without having songs of gold. Some solid tracks with an interesting song, but he needs to grow into this new sound with longer content.
Sition!
What we want? We want King Gizzard
When we want it? Lizard
I actually loved this album! I loved the last to Ev Ev albums too, and while their sound is less complex here, the songwriting is stronger than ever. Great review as always though!
I think a 6 is harsh - id be more inclined to give it at least a 7, or a light 8.
Feelin a light to decent 6/100 on this review
I can agree with your remarks on the songs in comparison to Get to Heaven, but I'm feeling more of a strong 7 on this album. Run the Numbers, Ivory Tower, Can't Do, and Night of the Long Knives provide punchy, powerful jams. The other less bombastic cuts still provide an enjoyable listen.
Review Potential Breakup Song by Aly&Aj, I need an educational breakdown on why that shit is such a bop.
"Is everything everything really a dark band?"
bruh
Like did he even look at their previous lyrics lol
@@noahm9759 Apparently not. I can appreciate his reviews, but it doesn't really seem like he leans into concepts of albums at all. Mostly talks about mixing, but stories and concepts are what does it for me. Oh wel.
REVIEW NEW KING GIZZ!!!
He already did...
Frog no he hasn't. That was murder of the universe. they've released another new album since a few months ago.
Frog you know they're releasing 5 albums this year right? The third came out a few days ago
Loved the new collab with Mild High Club, quite different to past albums but equally amazing. So jazzy and psychedelic :p
He'a making a 30 minute video with the yella flannel with the score: "watch the video" so he can give it a light 6.
This band is the most underrated ANYTHING IN EXISTANCE.
New King Gizzard?! New Grizzly Bear?! New QOTSA?! New LIARS!?! New Ariel Pink?!
I agree with most of this review but I would give it a 7. Not as crazy about a Fever Dream as I was about Get to Heaven but I still like this record
Watched these guys at Leeds Festival yesterday and honestly, they were amazing. The new songs sounded so good live, so much better than I anticipated.
finally you rereviewed MBDTF
I quite liked it. I liked them more for their social commentary than crowded sound. And while Ivory Tower, Can't Do, and Good Shot, Good Soldier get that crowded feel, I can't help but stay along for the commentary for most of the songs.
I'd give it an 8. It's on par-ish with Get to Heaven for me.
It finishes with White Whale, which sounds like a love song where love is seen as a hope to cling on to and appreciate, after having spent so much time thinking about dark things.
dude you really haven't listened to Arc have you?
i dicovered this channel today and spent all day reading the comment session of all videos, watching none
I could tell by the album cover that it was going to be a sub-par album. If you look at their covers before, they were funky and colorful. This cover is dark and unclear. I think the band is kind of having a bad patch, but are going to come back strong. Still going to buy the CD like the others. Hope they don't die out.
New (together)PANGEA album "bulls and roosters", will we see a review in the foreseeable future?
Don't worry, Tera Melos got you covered. New album fucking rules.
Everything Everything Everything makes is everything I need
Run The Numbers is about Brexit and an English politician who said that people have 'had enough of experts'
Review The Emoji Movie soundtrack
Review To the Bone by Steven Wilson you Melon!
Why
He doesn't like his music
John Stewart 7/10 imo
Where is the Sketches of Brunswick East Review melon?!?!?!?
My favorite album of the year
I have to say this pretty much lines up with my immediate impressions.
I kind of feel like this album could overall be a bit of a grower though.
Still to Get to Heaven is a fucking unassailable masterpiece.
Sorry, better overall than Man Alive? u wot m8?
Yaaaaal ready for saturation 2?
On the money again. Although even sub-par Everything Everything is 5 times more exciting than most other bands.
Dude their first album is killer! I thought this one was much more arena-rock influenced, more grandious choruses but less intricate rhytms and grooves. It gets better by the end tho
6/10
New Action Bronson tomorrow; New Akercocke tomorrow; New Queens of the Stone Age tomorrow. What will you review??
I love your thoughtful reviews so much ... but oh I respectfully disagree with this one! I adore this album, am enjoying the slightly less busy sound relative to earlier work (which I occasionally find myself admiring more than liking) and love its depth and cohesiveness of sound. For me 'Good Shot, Good Soldier' is one of the best songs of 2017 - such a soaring chorus. I can't stop listening to it.
Man Alive stands up.
A Fever Dream is really good, including the title track, despite its hook sounding like Fjokra's "Koi."
Totally agree
Was hoping for so much more
nigga how you watch the whole review already
WILL THERE B A BAYONETTA 3????? AND WILL IT LIVE UP TO EXPECTATIONS???
Wulbulbul Lubbubwublub yes and it will release on switch too
Jasko Skoja score and description kinda explain the whole review
Sinisterrr yeah probably the most disappointing release this year
Still got the best teeth in the game melon.
I think the title track is fantastic as well. That piano ballad section in the beginning building to that instrumental explosion on the back end was one of the most beautiful moments on the album
So much music dropped today, you my friend have a lot of work to do haha!
YOU GOT 2 NEW ALBUMS TO REVIEW
17 - XXXTENTACION
Luv is rage 2 - Lil Uzi
A Fever Dream was alright, I would have given it to a light to decent 7. I totally agree that Get to Heaven is much better. But shoutout to, Night of the Long Knives, and Run the Numbers, some of Everything Everything's best tracks yet.
An unbuttoned flannel??? Oh fuck that means he's gonna give it a 0
I a'int huggin my grandmama til you review King Gizzard
where is the grizzly bear review melon
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard with Mile High Club - "Sketches of Brunswick East"
