“Part of me doesn’t want people to think of Oklahoma as the armpit of the world, the world is full of armpits. The whole world is horrible, but also beautiful. Existence is complicated.” - Raygun Busch
Frownland is my new current favorite from the album as of late. “THEY DONT WANNA HEAR WHAT I HAVE TO SAY” just makes me feel feral. Raygun sounds absolutely animalistic on so many of the songs on this new album. Easily a 9/10 for me personally
Same here I actually like Cool World better than God’s Country. Still exploring the themes of GC but now on a global scale. Genocide, pestilence, devastation, emotional anguish, etc.. I honestly thought Anthony would’ve gone more in depth with the lyrics of Shame since it is about the Palestinian genocide going on rn, which he’s very passionate about online. Regardless this record blew my expectations. Easy 9/10
Even before God’s Country Raygun was saying shit like this at shows: “This song’s name is Mask. We’ve got an album coming out, and there’s a song on there called “The Mask.” Later on another album we’re gonna release a song called “The First Mask” so nobody can talk about this fucking song”
It's weird seeing things I've seen in real life on their album covers--that giant cross in Edmund right along I35 from this album and the closed Sears (I haven't confirmed it, but I think it's the one on Western in OKC) that was on God's Country (the back cover at least; I think I've seen the building on the front cover but I can't place it). I live in OK now but I grew up in southeast Kansas where there was more strip pit mining (I lived about a half hour from Big Brutus), but I remember seeing the chat piles on the road from Columbus down to Picher and into Miami. That whole area was just fucked to hell by the mining companies.
Camcorder was personally one of my favorites. I loved all the space the track had to breathe and it's delivery of a barren and eerie atmosphere. It felt like I was strapped to a chair with my eyes taped open in a dim lit room being forced to watch something truly disturbing and I was physically unable to look away .. "Let's watch it again."
I took it as an outside spectator filming war devastation/aftermaths of a town in ruin. Burning bodies. Painted with blood. That even though they’re just behind a camera, they can still feel the pain these poor civilians went through. (Very reminiscent of the heinous acts in Gaza)
Chat Pile is the perfect political band. They're not whiny, or preachy, or trying to sell an image of virtue. They're just fed up and angry. We have the means. We have the resources.

I think this record was more locked on thematically than God’s Country because most of the lyrics are about war, specifically in Gaza I would assume. I think Shame is lyrically the best track because it perfectly hits on how the U.S. has perpetuated war and brought the military industrial complex to a global scale. The references to the founding fathers and their monuments to me are pointing to all of this being by design from the very beginning of our history as a nation. Camcorder and tape in the same spirit talk about the horror and absurdity of seeing death every day on social media. I’ve talked with some of my friends about how the war in Ukraine would be a particularly shitty war to fight in because there’s a high probability that your death will end up on an instagram reel which takes away what little dignity there is in dying in combat. I think the lyrics on this record are definitely more focused but also more nuanced than on God’s Country because the lyrics on that album are straight to the point and beat you over the head for the duration of each song. This one’s probably a 9 for me and if they keep this trajectory, #3 will be a straight 10. Either way these dudes rule and genuinely deserve the hype around them. I met Stin when they played in AZ and he’s definitely one of the nicest band dudes I’ve ever met.
".. because through cleanly sung vocals, spoken word passages, and screams and shrieks where the lyrics stay surprisingly interlegible; the band makes their creative intentions behind a lot of their tracks very clear." - Great writing, and a very accurate description of what differentiates this band from others placed in the same genre. The instrumental performance is great, but it's the vocals that really stick with you.
Despite the description in the video, I feel like Cool World is MORE harrowing than God’s Country. The same themes but on a global, catastrophic scale.
OKC STAND UP. Being an OKC native, The chat pile dudes make me feel less alone in hating our state. I drive around with gods country on, and am always blown away by how they captured the feeling of my surroundings.
I love this album for it just being more Chat Pile while adding their own little flourishes that we have seen from their Brothers In Christ EP. They’re more funky, more deranged, more down-to-earth and horrifying. Lyrically, they’re also very expansive with the whole album feeling like a looming threat. We have really been getting a lot of great Noise Rock/Metal albums lately. KEN Mode’s sister albums, Couch Slut, Uniform, Thou, Mamaleek and now this. Also this album feels like how I felt when listening to NULL and VOID back to back.
I'm old and have never heard Chat Pile before, but on the opening track I hear a lot of prime Birthday Party mayhem. I might have to get into these guys.
What I would do for a Chat Pile x Ethel Cain song. I feel like they both lyrically capture the horror under the surface of American life so well I’d love to see what they could do together with their different sounds
i found it funny this album about modern dystopia released the day that we lost power after the latest hurricane. the flenser has some smooth timing! one of my favorites this year
Great album, but how is no one talking about the extensive Korn & Helmet influence on this album? It's not a bad thing, they take the sneering bass and heavy Korn guitar textures to an exciting logical conclusion, but yea it's ok to like Korn and I hear plenty here 😀🌽
same here, i emailed to check and told me they had a hiccup in the upload process that set them back for a bit but that it should ship this week. nice folks, hopefully it comes soon
I definitely agree, on how several songs dont really have a huge lyrical focus as their other songs. Camcorder and Frownland both are like the first Chat Pile songs without a very focused theme behind them, and that feels weird since what draws me to Chat Pile is their focused, emotional storytelling also The New World is about native american genocide
Love the Harvey Milk nod, but surprised to see no mention here or in the comments of Godflesh/Justin Broderick. The influence is HUGE. Chat Pile sounds like a more melodic Godflesh album like Hymns, or something from Jesu with a more “punk” edge. Everything from the riffs, guitar tones, mechanical drum beats, and especially the lyrical content of mental decline, industrial decay, poverty, ect. I fucking love these guys, but they owe loads of credit to Broderick.
Loved this album. For me they improved every aspect of their previous album and they included little hints of melodies and more vocal variety. Excellent album!
My mental health used to not be able to handle Grimace, two years later I jam it on a Sunday drive. Really puts in perspective how much Chat Pile has numbed my mind
God's Country is amazing and I feel that from the first listen, if you vibe with it, you'll be hooked, but Cool World I feel has more depth and is a real grower of an album. The more I listen, the more I love it. After several listens I think I prefer Cool World. Though, it doesn't matter because they are both awesome and both satisfy that part of me that is frustrated with the problems of the world around me that are seemingly ignored by the mainstream zeitgeist.
Props to the cover art, they have a great design identity, love it. Sonically, this album is massive, great production, and some great tunes under all of the bludgeoning riffs.
I like this album more than the last one, as bleak as it is it seems to have a bit more hope added and is a bit less depressive while still being depressing as fuck.
Masc is absolutely my favorite track they've done until nowdays, only before Slaughterhouse I'd never imagine they would so soon talk about a emotional topic such as toxic masculinity. I think is one of the worst and, sadly, most underrated subjects that affects males' mental health It's dense, is so heavy but so mellow, i nearly brought me to tears the first time i heard it
Frownland & The New World are going to flatten audiences when the band starts playing them live. Feel like Chat Pile already plays every song a bit (or considerably) faster during performances. A lot of these heavier, grimier songs are going to end up sounding thrashier than folks would think.
You should look into HANL's "Voids". It's comprised of demos as well as outtakes, songs we haven't yet heard, but the ones we have being so raw and uncensored that they are able to differentiate themselves from their final versions
I live in Oklahoma City. This band makes me appreciate my local scene more than ever. Hopefully one day Anthony you'll review an album for the OKC Industrial band Black Magnet. They bring that old-school Ministry style out and its really good. Their third album should hopefully be announced before the end of the year.
God’s Country was my album of 2022, so while I was absolutely hyped for Cool World, I acknowledged that it had big shoes to fill. Which is why I’m pleased that it delivered as hard as it did! An awesome record, emphasizing the more melodic aspects of the band.
Man I got really excited about the Harvey Milk shoutout. I hope mentioning them on a review of a popular new album brings some people to find out more about that band.
I absolutely loved this album. And I can understand your minor issues with it. But for me it delivered just as much and more than God’s country. Repeat listens are so fluid and engaging.
Knowing the blue vinyl pressing of the dying fetus record is the only pressing with that font color of the band name on the cover is illusory of the cd. Definitely something that is immediately interesting about how the uniform record mixes in with the color palate of my overall collection.
