While not as harrowing as the band's debut, Cool World still hits hard as fuck.

Y'all know this is just my opinion, right?
There should be a tour where it’s Chat Pile, Pile, and The Chats
That would be peak
Inception
I was about to go the rest of my life thinking no one ever heard of Pile
+2
and the rapper Plies
BALD MAN?!
REVIEWING ALBUMS?!
IN HIS ROOM?!?
oh man thats funny lol
As an Oklahoman I rep Chat Pile hard those mfs know how to get down.
Pull up to braums blasting chat pile
u from muskogee?
i love what theyve done for our scene so much. hope to see you at some vfw shows soon big dog
It's weird seeing things I've seen in real life on their album covers--that giant cross in Edmund right along I35 from this album and the closed Sears (I haven't confirmed it, but I think it's the one on Western in OKC) that was on God's Country (the back cover at least; I think I've seen the building on the front cover but I can't place it). I live in OK now but I grew up in southeast Kansas where there was more strip pit mining (I lived about a half hour from Big Brutus), but I remember seeing the chat piles on the road from Columbus down to Picher and into Miami. That whole area was just fucked to hell by the mining companies.
Chat pile now has songs called Mask, The Mask, and Masc. Betting on “Masq.” next
They said in a live show (can't remember when) after GC came out that they deliberately did that just to be funny and confusing
@@andrewfollin8203 I was thinking the same thing dude it had to be intentional because no band would accidentally name 3 songs all like that
Even before God’s Country Raygun was saying shit like this at shows:
“This song’s name is Mask. We’ve got an album coming out, and there’s a song on there called “The Mask.” Later on another album we’re gonna release a song called “The First Mask” so nobody can talk about this fucking song”
Frownland is my new current favorite from the album as of late. “THEY DONT WANNA HEAR WHAT I HAVE TO SAY” just makes me feel feral. Raygun sounds absolutely animalistic on so many of the songs on this new album. Easily a 9/10 for me personally
Same here I actually like Cool World better than God’s Country. Still exploring the themes of GC but now on a global scale. Genocide, pestilence, devastation, emotional anguish, etc.. I honestly thought Anthony would’ve gone more in depth with the lyrics of Shame since it is about the Palestinian genocide going on rn, which he’s very passionate about online. Regardless this record blew my expectations. Easy 9/10
Same 9/10 for me 🍻
Took the words out of my mouth, that song and particularly that part are the highlight of the album to me!
The way he screams “disappear” at the end is probably the most terrifying this album gets.
He is dog now tbf
I can confirm listening to chat pile is a window into what it feels like to live in okc
You live in OK Computer?
Tulsa is cool move here
TOOK AN OATH TO THE OKCPD WHEN I WAS, TWENTYFIVE
@@brysonharrison5698 I took an oath to the okc thunder to get my hopes up every year
Ditto OKC resident. In addition to the sounds, I’ve always loved the band’s photography and their eye for catching OKC-moods in general (album covers all rock, but really good inserts with OKC-scenes, too).
I think Stin does all the photography (might be wrong).
The moral of chat piles music: Oklahoma sucks
“Part of me doesn’t want people to think of Oklahoma as the armpit of the world, the world is full of armpits. The whole world is horrible, but also beautiful. Existence is complicated.” - Raygun Busch
Camcorder was personally one of my favorites. I loved all the space the track had to breathe and it's delivery of a barren and eerie atmosphere. It felt like I was strapped to a chair with my eyes taped open in a dim lit room being forced to watch something truly disturbing and I was physically unable to look away .. "Let's watch it again."
I took it as an outside spectator filming war devastation/aftermaths of a town in ruin. Burning bodies. Painted with blood. That even though they’re just behind a camera, they can still feel the pain these poor civilians went through. (Very reminiscent of the heinous acts in Gaza)
The first thirty seconds of Camcorder is maybe the highlight of the whole record for me. That heavy bass riff makes me want to run through a wall.
Fantano reviewing two metal records in a row is a miracle
Fantano reviewing his favorite genre of music wow
@@SauceBoss14 Yeah, its his favorite but usually we get like one metal review per month? I know he needs to review what gets more views though
Chat pile is hardly metal. The key difference is that chat pile makes good music
@@SauceBoss14did he actually say that metal was his favorite?
@@ShepTheBepI agree that chat pile isn't metal .. you lost me in the second half
Really just a great fucking year for extreme metal and hardcore

Welcome back Daughters but without the baggage
Dude yeah
That’s actually such a good way to sell them I have to check them out now
Friendship with Daughters is over. Now Chat Pile is my new best friend
Tbh Chat Pile really doesn't sound like peak YWGWYW Daughters, don't care for Chat Pile too much even if Daughters is obviously fucked now. Hot take tho. Gilla Band is the best Noise Rock and Post-Punk band rn and Most Normal is my album of the decade so far. Way better than Chat Pile imo
@@jackreeder215
oh absolutely, my comment was more tongue in cheek lol. the only main similarity is a slightly familiar sound in the vocalists. I also think that Daughters is (or was) better sonically and generally more interesting in all aspects, as great as Chat Pile is
Chat Pile is the perfect political band. They're not whiny, or preachy, or trying to sell an image of virtue. They're just fed up and angry.
We have the means. We have the resources.
Well put

Huge month for weird music fans (GYBE, Xiu Xiu, Geordie Greep, & Chat Pile) 🙌
I hope this album grows on Anthony because I thought this was gonna be a 9 at least. Having listened to it repeatedly and comparing it with the debut I think Chat Pile has created a more diverse, complex and better paced listening experience. God’s Country is fantastic but I think the band has only improved with this record and I’m so excited to see what they do in the future. Fingers crossed this makes his year end top 10.
Yeah I think they expanded their sonic palette with this one in a notable way. Particularly with the guitar tones and layered vocals. I disagree with the album sounding like a sequel to God's Country.
I've been listening to it a LOT since it came out and tbh I like it more with each listen. It's a total grower and I love to still discover new layers or aspects about each song even after months of listeni... oh wait, it hasn't even been a week. Damn. Cool album.
agreed! I feel like they experimented with vocals and atmospherics a lot more. I hadn't heard them lead into a track like the way they did in "I Am Dog Now" & "Camcorder" before. Also "Milk of Human Kindness" is a brand new Chat Pile flavor that I absolutely loooove
Nothing on it blew me away like their best songs (Why, Grimace, Dallas Beltway) but I still love it to bits. Can't wait to see them live again.
SEND MY BODY TO ARBY'S, CUT ME IN, CUT ME INTO, MICROSCOPIC SLICES OF MEAT
I LOVED their debut. Very happy to hear about this.
I'm feeling a light to decent 100 on this record
WHERE THE FUCK IS CUTOUTS
I Was Grocery Shopping When Masc Came On & Almost Threw Everything Off The Shelves
the video is great too
These are my exact feelings when I listen to any of their songs, and I work at a grocery store
What??? That's wild hahaha.
Masc came on and I got depressed. Feelsbadman
This is THE feel bad album of the year
OKLAHOMA REPRESENT BABYYYY
That’s what the Masc is. That’s what the point of the Masc is.
If chat pile was a little hotter, a 10 would’ve been reasonable
Despite the description in the video, I feel like Cool World is MORE harrowing than God’s Country. The same themes but on a global, catastrophic scale.
I AM 8/10 NOW
".. because through cleanly sung vocals, spoken word passages, and screams and shrieks where the lyrics stay surprisingly interlegible; the band makes their creative intentions behind a lot of their tracks very clear." - Great writing, and a very accurate description of what differentiates this band from others placed in the same genre. The instrumental performance is great, but it's the vocals that really stick with you.
WHERE IS THE SMILE ANTHONY IM STARTING TO FORM MY OPNION
He's gonna give it a decent 8
@@BrofUJu he's gonna give it a 7 and i haven't even listened to the record. Fantano is so predictable.
I drive past where that album cover photo was taken every day, and blasting this record while doing so is so nice.
I'm old and have never heard Chat Pile before, but on the opening track I hear a lot of prime Birthday Party mayhem. I might have to get into these guys.
Super sick group. A lot of moments on this record are very Korn-esque, but done in a great way
OKC STAND UP. Being an OKC native, The chat pile dudes make me feel less alone in hating our state. I drive around with gods country on, and am always blown away by how they captured the feeling of my surroundings.
Strong 9 for me! Like it more than Gods Country personally
Same! So damn good 🍻
I like this new one much more than Gods Country- vocals are better integrated. Super heavy and catchy. Shame is killer.
God's Country is amazing and I feel that from the first listen, if you vibe with it, you'll be hooked, but Cool World I feel has more depth and is a real grower of an album. The more I listen, the more I love it. After several listens I think I prefer Cool World. Though, it doesn't matter because they are both awesome and both satisfy that part of me that is frustrated with the problems of the world around me that are seemingly ignored by the mainstream zeitgeist.
Watch them play live and enjoy the niche local film banter between songs
Saw them in portland and watched them haze the crowd for giving gus van sant a "tepid response"
I like how at 4:33 you whipped it out and showed us your “cool world”
why would you lie to me like that
4'33 mentioned
its nice to see an album named after ralph bakshi's most polarising movie
Holy shit what a cool thumbnail
I think this record was more locked on thematically than God’s Country because most of the lyrics are about war, specifically in Gaza I would assume. I think Shame is lyrically the best track because it perfectly hits on how the U.S. has perpetuated war and brought the military industrial complex to a global scale. The references to the founding fathers and their monuments to me are pointing to all of this being by design from the very beginning of our history as a nation. Camcorder and tape in the same spirit talk about the horror and absurdity of seeing death every day on social media. I’ve talked with some of my friends about how the war in Ukraine would be a particularly shitty war to fight in because there’s a high probability that your death will end up on an instagram reel which takes away what little dignity there is in dying in combat.
I think the lyrics on this record are definitely more focused but also more nuanced than on God’s Country because the lyrics on that album are straight to the point and beat you over the head for the duration of each song. This one’s probably a 9 for me and if they keep this trajectory, #3 will be a straight 10. Either way these dudes rule and genuinely deserve the hype around them. I met Stin when they played in AZ and he’s definitely one of the nicest band dudes I’ve ever met.
i found it funny this album about modern dystopia released the day that we lost power after the latest hurricane. the flenser has some smooth timing! one of my favorites this year
I got my tape the day before the storm hit

This album rips now waiting for Undeath review
Loved the chat pile album
No the smile review tho?:(
Thom yorke is a zionist unfortunately
These guys sure know how to close out an album
I would personally like to congratulate you on prioritising chat pile over the smile 🙌
Frownland & The New World are going to flatten audiences when the band starts playing them live.
Feel like Chat Pile already plays every song a bit (or considerably) faster during performances. A lot of these heavier, grimier songs are going to end up sounding thrashier than folks would think.
Loved this album. For me they improved every aspect of their previous album and they included little hints of melodies and more vocal variety. Excellent album!
"It's a cool, cool world."

Chills 🥶🥶🥶
2024 have been a one of a kind year in music department, incredible good releases
I definitely agree, on how several songs dont really have a huge lyrical focus as their other songs. Camcorder and Frownland both are like the first Chat Pile songs without a very focused theme behind them, and that feels weird since what draws me to Chat Pile is their focused, emotional storytelling
also The New World is about native american genocide
3 back-to-back heavy music reviews, and 4 in a week, I am thrilled.
God’s Country was my album of 2022, so while I was absolutely hyped for Cool World, I acknowledged that it had big shoes to fill.
Which is why I’m pleased that it delivered as hard as it did! An awesome record, emphasizing the more melodic aspects of the band.
This and Thou's Umbilical are definitely my votes for best metal albums of 2024.
ya like sludge don’t ya
Fun Fact: Chat Pile is what Fantano calls his Twitch audience.
They def went more catchy and not so schizo, but who knew that would be exactly what was needed to follow such a strong debut
Loving this album, Chat Pile has quickly become a favorite of mine.
I thought I was the only one who noticed the frownland - scent apprent groove relation. I was like “why do I like this so much?” “Oh it’s nirvana 😂”
I'm not much of a metal guy but _God's Country_ was handily one of my favorites of 2022. Love to see the boys stay winning.
chat pile is fucking killing it right now
Pls review Ka’s final project, the Thief Next to Jesus. Shits amazing. RIP KA
You should look into HANL's "Voids". It's comprised of demos as well as outtakes, songs we haven't yet heard, but the ones we have being so raw and uncensored that they are able to differentiate themselves from their final versions
WHERE IS THE CUTOUTS REVIEW FANTANO
Goddamn LOVE this album! It’s so just.. bereft and savage.
Im hype as hell to see these guys in February
Chat pile makes songs I try to forget but can’t
Dark, bleak, and haunting. Cool World forever.
Man I got really excited about the Harvey Milk shoutout. I hope mentioning them on a review of a popular new album brings some people to find out more about that band.
One of the darkest and realest albums of this year.
oh sweet Anthony oh wouldn't you give my album a chance
Bummer you didn't like Camcorder, that's my favorite song on the album. It sounds like it should soundtrack the movie 'Threads'.
thank you for reviewing CP, anthony
I like this album more than the last one, as bleak as it is it seems to have a bit more hope added and is a bit less depressive while still being depressing as fuck.
You didn't give it a 10 but it'll do sir
I live in Oklahoma City. This band makes me appreciate my local scene more than ever. Hopefully one day Anthony you'll review an album for the OKC Industrial band Black Magnet. They bring that old-school Ministry style out and its really good. Their third album should hopefully be announced before the end of the year.
Lots of yellow flannel lately... I love it C:
Fun fact: Anthony is the titular "Funny Man" of the track.
aoty 2024
This album was a rollercoaster. They did a great job streamlining what they offer the most. If anyone wants a good album released earlier this year than check out Blind Girls - An Exit Exists, or something that just came out, check out the new Candy EP - Flipping
I can't wait to listen to it, honestly I discovered them like last month and I've been obsessed since then, I'm happy Anthony is covering them :)
OK is slowly taking over heavy music. And, being from there, i am fucking loving it
Wild I have been where the album art was taken
Cool World is the album I wanted from Chat Pile. I didn't really like God's Country that much because the vocal delivery felt separated from the rest of the music. The vocals on Cool World feel more in rhythm with each song, and it seems like there's more clean singing and harsh vocals, and less spoken word. It feels unified in a way that I really wanted from God's Country, but didn't get.
I like that the past couple years Fantano has been giving a lot more context to the artists before each review. This time however I think he overdid it a bit for a reminder of just one album 2 years old.
For me, the biggest difference between Cool World and their previous work is the complete abandonment of any sense of humour. It's just pure horror now.
Agree with this comment a lot.
They sprinkle irreverence, irony, and gallows humor throughout all their other releases. It’s always been something I like about the band.
But it’s totally absent from Cool World (appropriately imo), and it makes for a very dif experience for sure.
Thanks for giving this a 10, Anthony

What I would do for a Chat Pile x Ethel Cain song. I feel like they both lyrically capture the horror under the surface of American life so well I’d love to see what they could do together with their different sounds

I would also mention Dystopia as a similar band and possible influence on Chat Pile.
