@robinwong which one to get between EP5 or EPL7, i’ll use it mostly for my family documentary, maybe only will invest for two lenses zuiko 17mm f2.8 and zuiko 14-42mm EZ. EPL7 had newer sensor but only 3 axis IBIS, and EP5 had 5 axis IBIS but older sensor. Right now i use Canon M50 with kit lens and an adapter to EF 50mm 1.8 II, but i’m kinda not confidence to use it in public due to it size, i thought migrate to olympus mft will made more confident taking picture in public space with it compact size which less intimidating. Before anyone says "wow Robin why you hold the camera with one hand?", obviously I was holding another camera on another hand to film the LCD screen to show you how I composed my shots. If I were not doing a video, I'd use both hands to hold a camera. It is NOT easy making a video, OK? But thankfully the PEN camera was small and light enough to do so, without breaking my wrist.
You make it look so easy, Robin. You prove yet again that any camera in the right hands can take amazing photos. I’m also glad you are showcasing the epl cameras. These cameras are small and fun for everyday use.
Robin, you are singularly the person that motivated me to start my photography hobby last year and I thank you once again for introducing me to such a rewarding artistic endeavor! I started with an E-M1 Mark 3, but vidoes like these actually motivated me to 'downgrade' to an E-M1 Mark I for $150 recently. Olympus sure was generous with firmware updates back in the day and this camera does everything I need! Not only did it bring back a thousand dollars to my bank account, but I shoot even more now that my camera is more compact and more ergonomic for my smaller hands. GAS is a common theme in the youtube photography community but I consider videos like these the best antidote to GAS!
Thanks Larry, and yes we don't need the latest and greatest to enjoy photography! Some of the best photographs in the world were shot with lesser gear, from yesteryears, and we can learn to do the same.
Nice guide as always. Finally Robin competes with Red35 fashion shoots! Also I noticed you are using F10, is this due to no eye af so guaranteeing sharpness across the model, or just to handle the bright studio strobes, as you were limited to only -3 EV? At F10 the pictures were so sharp.. where is the lens deffraction we were all warned about with the small sensor size and all lens being deffraction limited?
I love inexpensive older gear that delivers. I have kit, premium and PRO glass and I use these lenses interchangeably with confidence! This was a great example Robin!
Robin, I have been a long time admirer of you as you always tell the good and the bad of all the equipment you use. I just purchased an E PL7 on Ebay for $138 and it only had 4,421 shutter count. It is white and I prefer black but for that price I couldn't pass it up. I already had the 14-42 EZ in silver and with that on the camera, it really looks great. This is my every day carry camera. Keep up the good work.
Very cool shoot with awesome results! Can you explain a bit more about the rest of the gear that you use in this shoot? Backdrops and studio flashes I presume?
Wow, your point is well made, there's not much wrong with the photo quality is there. A good reminder for us all. Cameras were already pretty good 10 years ago ;) This is a big part why I feel no need to shop in new market, used is fine for me as a hobbyist.

Hello Robin... I say thank you for your great videos. Thanks to your posts, I have been the owner of a white Olympus E-PL7 with a 14-42 kit lens in new condition for 10 days now. I already have an Olympus OM-D10 MarkII. But for my travels I wanted an even more compact camera. Now I have a great selection of excellent cameras and enjoy swapping all my lenses back and forth. Keep it up...
Great photo results! Glad your friend Van is enjoying the E-M1 Mk iii I remember taking the E-PL1 into a studio with the Olympus 45mm F1.8, fun times. This was before the E-M5 was released, lol.
Robin, thank you for teaching me the fun of taking pictures with the camera and lens I'm using now. I understand that If I don't keep shooting more, I won't be able to get the better movies&photos I want.
Another great video...Being an old studio owner/shooter...lighting gear and setup have always been way more important than the camera.....I am an M43 user since day one ...Cheers. note: of course I use other gear as well...Elinchrom...Profoto...now days since moving to Bangkok its mostly Godox for flash.
Yeah we can also get great results from cheap lights. I probably won't recommend for professional shoot (color accuracy, consistent light output, etc) but for casual, hobbyist sessions, why not?
Hi Robin and the community. Thank you so much for this video. Results are just fantastic and you still provide us with more than valuable tips and good advices and things we can all do with budget gears and camera. Thanks for that and please continue. One question on your portraits: could you explain the lighting set up used? Because when looking at the photo settings, there is no miracle, light setting is I guess the key element. I would be very intersted in getting more info on that (Synchrnoisation between your camera and the flash / lighting set up)? Again, thanks in advance

@@robinwong thank you. My question is not clear, sorry. Do you use an external (?) flash when shooting or is there enough light when you shoot the model? This is not clear to me (I could not find the answer in the other video you linked).

Hi Robin, as you know I recently bought a used E-PL7. Such a great compact camera. Haha watching your video, now I feel I need to get that budget 40-150mm lens!
Robin great content as always. Love to see you do some on the Olympus Pen Ep5. So little on it here. Keep up the great work. Great to see your gifted em1iii and new owner
😂I waited so long for one to come up. I love it but with it's age it missed the content creation era. But I now understand you can't do one with yours not having a working LCD. Really enjoy your videos thank you for all your hard work
Proof that old, budget gear can still produce great results. But at least 50% of the success of the photos are thanks to the lighting setup. Any tips on how to light an indoor photoshoot? I saw some studio lights and an on camera flash to trigger the set-up. What else did you use?
The PL7 is very capable but what really surprised me were the lenses!!! Robin, I am guessing that you were shooting at F10 for a good reason (sharpness)?
Lovely photos, and model. I imagine your professional lighting was an important element in creating the images you envisaged. Can you suggest what settings would help to get those dark background images using Olympus speed lights?
When you shoot at F10, 1/250 ISO200 (as shown in video), the background is dark without illumination from flash. The studio light setup is very basic though, nothing much to talk about.
12-32, my first lens with my first kit, the Lumix GX80. I had planned to upgrade it for years until youtubers like Robin showed me how nifty it really was. So I got another! Lately I've been having fun with them on the GX80, OM-5, and E-PL6. I'm even more impressed with it now, after seeing these results from a pro studio shoot. Though that's not to discount the input from the other side of the camera. 😉
I have an E-PL8 I bought second hand and it's rather taken a back seat since I got my EM10mk3. Also have that 12-32 Pana and a 45-150 Pana too. Perhaps I should dust it off and take it for a spin. You showed some great images.
Wow, Robin, wonderful photos with amazing combos! But why did you use aperture 10? Because of defraction one should think that f5.6 or f8 would be much better ...
Excellent demonstration! I notice that you shot your photos with f10. May I know the reason? What is the result if you shoot with smaller f numbers? Thank you
Topic request! I love these "great results with entry level gear videos", but I would love to learn more about upgrading, how, when, and why! I've been enjoying my E-M10 mkIV for two years, and getting great results with it, but now I'm starting to wonder: what am I missing that I would have in a more expensive body? I genuinely don't know. What does that extra money actually buy you, besides more buttons and waterproofing? How do I know if my camera is holding me back, when it's all I've ever known?
Hi Robin, how coincidental, I purchased an EPL7 a few days ago to add to my collection of MFT cameras and it arrived in the post this morning just before your vid popped up in my inbox. I had purchased it with the 14-42 EZ kit lens. I couldn’t believe my luck as it was in mint condition with only 314 shutter activations. It cost me £200 a bargain. In truth I had only bought it for the lens but as it’s mint I may well keep it, but here is my dilemma should I sell the EPL7 or my EPL8 ? Great video as always with good tips.
Hi Robin, I totally agree with your take on budget gear and especially kit lenses. The 14-42mm EZ lens is still my most used lens because of it's portability. Question: Why use F10 when for instance f5.6 should give sufficient depth of field?
PEN EPL-7 was my very first camera and I loved it, white edition.... the shutter sound sounds crazy to me nowadays but I still have it in my shelf =) true Oly kit lens 14-42mm got broken and doesn't extend now. :( What a pity but just order lumix instead
I have an EM 1 II, EM3 IV, and EP 5; out of all of these, my pen camera is my favorite camera to grab and take with me. I hope OM Digital Solutions sticks with and invests more in these small cameras. Big bulky cameras can be found in any manufacturer but I truly believe small good looking and great functioning cameras is where investment needs to go.
I had and used this camera brand new for a few months. Unfortunately I observed it had some weird artifacts in the raw files, like posterization on smooth transitions, and they were quite noticeable.
Hi Robin. I have an epl7 with the kit lens and I haven't used it as much as I expected I would because the pictures and the colours do not turn out as best as my dslr does. Its a shame cs I really want to utilise it since dslr is a bit too heavy to carry around. Can I know, do lenses affect the picture colours? I feel like with the kit lens, the pictures tend to be a bit muted and too warm to my liking (not sure if its just my eye). Any tips? I don't mind spending a bit more on a lens if it means I can get better quality! (ps: I would want to use the camera for travelling)
Funny part is, that EPL-7 is way more capable than what early FF cameras like EOS 5D mk1 were.. and those were used for the most demanding shoots for ages including weddings, events, portraits etc :) Aperture F10 is interesting in such scenario. Yes there is no texture in background to blurr, but lens is running into difraction a bit. Or is it used to be sure that whole girl is inside depth of field? :)
Yes I want everything in focus. The model did move a lot, and I don't want to stop her from doing that, so I compensate with more depth of field. Diffraction isn't an issue, if you have seen the magnified images, still plenty sharp, and only 16MP
I’d never think to use such a narrow aperture! Is that customary for studio portraits? And why is the exposure compensation so low and blinking? Doesn’t that mean it’s not happy with your manual settings? There’s a lot I have to learn!
It was on full manual. There was no exposure compensation. It was an indicator that the image will be underexposed, nothing more. But then there was flash, which the camera cannot read externally. Hence, the image was not underexposed.
I consider the 12-32 Lumix to be a little gem; best kit lens I've ever had. It remains my main lens with an even more dinosaur camera, the original EM5. Can be had for $130-40; but the price seems to be going up.
@@robinwong Have the 12-32 and 12-42 lenses. My favorite kit zoom lens is the Panasonic 12-60. Not nearly as compact as the other two lenses. I do love the wide range of focal lengths provided. Also does dual IS with Panasonic bodies. It came with the GX9. The only time I take this lens off this body is for the PL15 lens. A killer street photography combination. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
I used the following micro 4/3 gear to shoot professional quality images: Olympus E-P1 and E-P3 45mm f/1.8 Olympus 20mm f/1.7 Panasonic 14mm f/2.5 Panasonic
Mmmmkey, budget lens, buget camera, or whatever the other way around, but who's behind the camera still counts the most. My shots would pale side by side e to robin's one even should he shoots with a kit lens an EP1, while me using an Hasselbladt 150MP something with a 10K $ portrait lens 😅
That is not true! I have also shared everything I can in the video down to my camera settings. I think we should stop worrying about gear and just start shooting.

Big bulky cameras can be found in any manufacturer but I truly believe small good looking and great functioning cameras is where investment needs to go.
That was so cool! I was looking for an E PL 7 on our market online, but I can't find anything so cheap...😢
Look harder!
Funny part is, that EPL-7 is way more capable than what early FF cameras like EOS 5D mk1 were.. and those were used for the most demanding shoots for ages including weddings, events, portraits etc :)
Aperture F10 is interesting in such scenario.
"I'm shooting with this Olympus pen E-PL7, it is a dinosaur camera now"
me with my recently purchased EPL5: 👁️👄👁️
Yeah the E-PL5 is.. pre-dinosaur? Haha
@@robinwong Ah, okay. Thanks!
I consider the 12-32 Lumix to be a little gem; best kit lens I've ever had. It remains my main lens with an even more dinosaur camera, the original EM5. Can be had for $130-40; but the price seems to be going up.
Most of the images were shot on 40-150mm R
@@robinwong Have the 12-32 and 12-42 lenses. My favorite kit zoom lens is the Panasonic 12-60. Not nearly as compact as the other two lenses. I do love the wide range of focal lengths provided. Also does dual IS with Panasonic bodies. It came with the GX9. The only time I take this lens off this body is for the PL15 lens. A killer street photography combination.

Hey there. What camera flash would you recommend for a Pen ep7 and Pen pl10. Thank you.
Any flash is fine though. They do the same.
@@robinwong Thank you.
..........and don't listen to the hype on certain cameras! This Olympus PEN punches well above it's weight.
I used the following micro 4/3 gear to shoot professional quality images:
Olympus E-P1 and E-P3
45mm f/1.8 Olympus
20mm f/1.7 Panasonic
14mm f/2.5 Panasonic
Awesome setup you have there
So in order of importance:
Beautiful model [content/subject] > Light > Gear.
Yes, content and subject matter more
Helps to be a ninja photographer and have a beautiful girl in a well lit studio. 😀😇
Subject content matters!
You are using F10 because of studio lights right.
No, I want everything in focus. Take note I use very long focal lengths.
But you are not taking a landscape photo just a portrait , am a bit confused!@@robinwong
The size of that Canon lens made my back hurt
Thanks for being here, appreciate the support, and wow, what a great deal you got on the E-PL7!
What did you use for your lighting setup?? Was it also a budget setup?
That question is irrelevant, because the model and make up artists were not budget hire too. Some things, you can't cheap out.
@@robinwong I was asking about lighting, not the model....
@@robinwong I am interested in studio lighting and I was wondering if you had any tricks to make that cheaper. What did you use? Why did you use it?
Its about lighting. The Pro is behind the camera, set up, and so on. The camera is only there to capture the target.
What makes you think the lighting is not on budget? The setup is pretty standard though. Nothing fancy.
I would have never known my camera could be played like that. It really depends on lights huh…
Why shoot in -3 exposure compensation? Dont really understand....
he shot in manual mode, there was no exposure comp. showed -3 as it was a bit dark until the flash fired :)
@@geedee3817 yeah I forgot he used flashlight... If you shoot in -3 usually the picture will be very dark...
There was no exposure compensation. It was in full manual, as stated by another comment.
You need a couple of not so cheap flashlight strobe for this
You also need to hire a good model, pay a talented make up artist, and so on. Let's not go too far from the discussion.
You can take awesome photos with most cameras if you have pro studio lights. Enough light, direction and reflectors are essential.
That was not a "pro studio light" setup.
Panasonic GX9 is a lot better, but it costs more
No EVF => No Camera.
No EVF you can't even see what I'm composing, so no video for you.
The EPL7 does have an EVF. There is a slot below the hot shoe that accepts the optional EVF. The EVF is as expensive as the body.

No way this 73 yr old could do that with one hand. But i want to play with my epm-1.
Read the pinned comment please. Thanks.
The camera gear is budget. But the lighting set up is not.
What makes you think it isn't? *wink wink
@@robinwong Haha. You're the man. Please make a video about budget lighting set-ups. Thanks!
💯❤❤❤❤❤💯
Thanks Zoltan
Danke!
Thanks so much!
