- Bernalillo County Clerk invited all members of the public to come ou and VIEW, not participate in, but VIEW the election process in what they call an open and transparent democratic system. Upon Arrival I was immediately stopped, and told multiple times that I could not record certain parts of this transparent system, or certain public employees, and that I couldn't view anything without first identifying myself. Nathan was consistently rude and passive aggressive, which energy I mirrored. After asking Nathan and his employees for similar information that they were demanding out of ME, Nathan informed me that treating them the way they treat the public is "aggressive", and a cause for concern.

Based on my experience; nothing. Nathan did an outstanding job overall. If anyone thinks it's as easy as he made it seem to remain professional and tactful in a prolonged, adversarial encounter, then they've never worked in any customer service capacity before. Not saying James didn't make any good points, because he proved the hypocrisy expertly. But compared to how quickly most cops and many public servants fly off the handle (and many become violent) within seconds of being challenged, I think he really did a great job overall. Not everyone can go toe to toe with James and remain as composed and as in control of their emotions as Nathan did. IMO.

Actual laws enacted by legislators is only one part of it. Another is when judges legislate from the bench with their decisions and published opinions. Another part is executive orders. Another is policy. Another is Might Makes Right.
I have no problems with laws that are designed to protect the People and their property (or if not actually protect, allow apprehension and punishment of the culprit.) But where these 1A auditors and others so often run afoul is the multitude of laws designed to protect governmental interests. Police also routinely mutate laws into weapons against those they wish to bully and/or seek revenge upon.

Asking PUBLIC employees for PUBLIC records is apparently "trying to elicit a reaction, making them uncomfortable, and being rude." You can't make this sh*t up. You want to see them really lose it? Ask them to abide by the law and respect your constitutional rights. For many people, that's an arrestable offense. These people have lost their freaking minds. Cringe worthy isn't a strong enough description of their behavior. They have ZERO respect for the public or constitution. Asking someone who gives you unlawful, unconstitutional directives to identify themselves isn't out of line. Them purposely making it as difficult as possible for the public to access public records is out of line. The fact that this is the norm is beyond unacceptable. I cannot tell you how happy I was to see someone actually articulate the issues with sign-in sheets. You were spot on in describing how those sheets can be used as a means of retaliation against people, specifically the press, who conduct investigations and may release information unfavorable to the agency.
