I never realized how much movie posters overlap with thumbnails. It makes sense though since they basically have the same goal of "watch this thing I made."
RUclips thumbnails pretty much have the following things: Fire in the background, text covering eyes, BANNED, CANCELLED, and the Rotten Tomatoes or whatever socre. That all I can think of.

The worst movie posters are the ones that give away the plot! Remember that Planet of the Apes VHS cover that showed Lady Liberty in ruins, which wasn't revealed until THE END OF THE FILM and ruins the mystique that we as the audience were supposed to unravel!!
That's already spoiled by cultural osmosis. They were obviously just trying to capitalize on "hey, this is the movie with that thing you know in it".

3:36 Funny you bring up Spider-Man: Homecoming because the “main” poster for that one that I always see is the one where Spider-Man is just chilling in his academic decathon jacket. It’s SUCH a great poster, as it perfectly represents the vibes of this iteration of Peter Parker and how even when he’s Spider-Man, he’s just a kid who likes to relax.
Another thing that stifles the creativity of movie posters is that they are actual real estate that movie stars and their agents compete and negotiate over. Go look up the story of how the actor credits in the poster for 'The Towering Inferno' were added - it reads like a teacher resolving a fight between kindergarten students.

I always wondered why the Alvin and the Chipmunks posters look wildly different from the movie. And I don't mean the clothes, I mean their literal designs, their faces and body proportions look way off from how they do in the film. And after some digging, I found out that these models that were used in the posters were actually used in the original trailers for the first movie, I can tell by the shapes of their heads and hair patterns that they're the same as in the posters. But I guess somewhere in the middle of production they were changed a bit to look like how they do now. And for years it always bugged me why their poster models look so different, I don't even care about the clothes that they never wear in the movie, I just want to know why they changed their designs?

I have a book containing all the James Bond movie posters. It is so interesting to see the evolution of the 60's and 70's paintings and the amount of work and detail that went into them. Look at the main poster for Moonraker as a prime example. Then, once the 80s closed they started to just compile shots from the movie onto the Poster. Such as with Goldeneye but they were still very creative, one poster for Die Another Day was a smoking barrel of a gun laying on a CG block of ice slowly melting and the amount of detail that went into that is awesome. The best modern day Bond poster has got to be the SPECTRE Bullet Shatter against the black back round. I love them so much I bought a Dr No poster and Octopussy one sheet to hang in my bedroom.
I am excited for Fall Guy from the poster. I love the poster of the lady in the car with Ryan Gosling on a camera crane swinging around reaching his hand out for her and an explosion behind him. The visual alone makes me wanna see it

deafinately agree, there have always been bad movie posters throughout the years of cinema, its just people's nostalgia taking over and also the internet allowing us to see these bad posters so often
I can understand why people dislike modern movie posters for being overcrowded. But it comes across as hypocritical because they do the same thing for RUclips thumbnails. I seen some thumbnails that look terrible for having way too much stuff it makes think how they look at it and said "yes this looks good"

But, some of them uses the same Elements from other movies to make it look "Badass" or "action"
Like with Star Wars posters with it's Famous "Blue on the Left, Red on the Right" Poster for it's Good vs Evil Or Main character in the Middle to be Good or Evil. Or Avengers with the Main characters in the Middle, Villain on the Top, Characters on the Bottom and Title above the Bottom. Also with the Wimpy kid where It has the Cast and behind them is a Shadow of their Book self. Or Doom 2005's Early Poster where The Main character's Hand or weapon at the Bottom showing that they are in First Person. Or, Just the 80's Poster where the Logo is just there like Jurassic Park or Ghostbusters with the Logo on the Middle and Characters on the Bottom.
They call Movie posters "Original" But some are just using the Same elements from other Posters just for Marketing and Money. But, They needed a Poster for their Movie.

One of my favourite horror movie posters (even if the quality of the movie is questionable) is the teaser poster for alien covenant. Where it’s completely black, with the face of the xenomorph looming out of the darkness, the only text being “run.”

In my opinion, a good way to make a movie poster is to make it look like a scene from the movie. Like instead of floating heads, it’s people posing standing or sitting together. An example is the Avengers 1 poster where it’s a destroyed city and the avengers are posing, it looks like a scene from the movie.
