Just sold my RAV Vast drum today so that I can buy the S49 Mk2. Your video solidified that I made the correct decision!
Good job. I liked how you mostly showed the features without having to resort to NKS or Komplete Kontrol.. While they are extremely useful, it's good to know this controller can be so conforming on its own. Thanks! Like the other responder, I just picked up a S49 MkII. So great job! You're a very good performance reviewer. Not someone just poking around reviewing hardware they don't really know.
I've owned my S49 for a few years. I guess I should have read the manual. This thing just got way more useful. Thanks Dom.
Just to add for people who may find it useful, pressing Shift+Mixer enables the Audio Feedback from the keyboard, it will tell you what you button press, the values on the mixer, what instruments you are going through on the browser etc. I am really amazed at how it reads to you the values of the knobs when you simply touch them. It may be intended for people with sight impairment, but it is equally valuable if your keyboard is under a desk or you can't see the screens or the buttons.
Re: the jog wheel - - it "clicks" and jumps to the current quantize value in Cubase. So if your quantize is set to 1/4 note, you'll jog by quarter notes. An extreme opposite of that would be 1/32 quantize value - - the jog will then creep slower by that value. VERY handy once you're aware.
nice presentation of the controller!
I bought my S88 MK2 around 2 years ago and it is easily my most worth purchase of all time.
I use it everyday and still happy. :)
Dom, your timing is perfect on this for me. I got an S49 about a week ago and your video showed me that I can do a lot more in Cubase with it than I realised.
Awesome! Great timing then hehehe!

Thank you, Dom, I just got an S61 and your video helped me to get started with it. I will 100% get to your Maschine video once I get it.
I never even asked for this video but I'm glad it exists as I know there is so much I'm not utilizing with Komplete Kontrol and I really want to take advantage of my investment
Just got my S49 the other day, looking forward to this!
Oh.. how right you are about that touch strip being in a bad location under the mod and pitch bend wheels. That thing is very troublesome for me as I brush across it from time to time when using either wheel.. I still like it despite the annoyance.. well most of the time. Thank you for taking the time to show us your work flow!
Just bought this today. Gonna take about 6-7 months for me to get situated before I can start creating my own scores. I'm really ecstatic about this keyboard!
I just bought the S88, had no idea about the panning feature! Thank you so much. And you are so right about the touch strip, it can be a pain. Bro, you are the best!
lol im glad its not just me who forgets how to pan in cubase using the komplete kontrol :)
Definitely not just you- I will have to rewarch my video in order to remember one week from now :P
A grateful thank you. I have learnt so much from your videos, and it's good to see you are also in London, but I can't get my brain around that accent; I'd say French, but some friends say Chile and Greece.
I live in rural Manitoba, Canada, and have been patiently awaiting the delivery of my brand new KK s88 on MONDAY. FedEx today updated their delivery schedule, thus my excitement is growing! I was so torn between the Arturia Keylab 88 mk2, and the s88, but the s88 barely wins that battle for two small reasons - better integration with Kontakt-related stuff (which I use a LOT), and the "feel" of the action being closer to "natural" than on the Arturia (in some cases/reviews, I've read that some players have found that action to be uncomfortably heavy).
While I intend to use it in my studio, I'm also setting up Plugin Alliance's version of Deskew's "Gig Performer" on my new laptop and migrating over my whole stage rig to VST-sourced sounds. Maybe it's my Yamaha Montage 8 that will get a permanent hard-wire in to the studio here - who knows - all I DO know though, is that because I'm nearing 60 years of age, I fear that I can't haul that Montage 8 up and down too many more flights of stairs. The KK S88 weighs exactly HALF of what the Montage weighs....
Sorry again! (for the long comment...) You always make GREAT videos Dom! I research every large investment I make, and thanks to folks like yourself, RUclips has been a goldmine of information. As a matter of fact ...... when I researched the Montage about 4 years ago ... wasn't that .... it was you! =)
A little late someone may already pointed this out.... but you can have pages of assignable CCs for those 8 knobs. You seem to only be using the first page, if you rename the other 3 pages you have 32 CCs to play with, then you only go thru pages with the arrows under prest (under Mute and Solo)
Thank you very much, nice and very useful video as always!!!✌🙏
Thank you for this, Dom. Now I will feel more comfortable getting this keyboard around June, as I've wanted so badly.
You'r unique. Thank you Dom for this video.
Thanks Dom!!! I was really waiting for this video!! Awesome as always!
I just noticed you broke 40k subs! Congratulations! and seriously... thank you so much for these
Oh yes! This is awesome Dom, looking forward!
Hope you enjoy Mick
Great vid again Dom. I too kept forgetting where the pan function was 🙈😆
Very clear and useful! Thank you so much for your training!
I have been using this thing for a long time and only now, thanks to you, I learned so many functions !!! thank
Great to hear Slava! Enjoy!
I got the M32 and it has made it easier for me to work with Cubase.
So I didn't do anything wrong when I bought the 88 months ago. Learned something new again. It's a shame that NI doesn't have a video like this. In the meantime I have also understood how to put shortcuts on the midi buttons. Only that you might have to press the switch twice. What I personally still miss is to create new tracks from the controller. And you are absolutely right about the touch strip.
So, what you didn' t mention was If you need to define all the controls manualy via midi learn or if there is a Cubase mapping available from NI or Steinberg. Thx and greetings!
I love my KK S49 with Cubase
Dom! Seriously??? I just came to your channel inspired by Padshop Apollo Expansion promo video on Steinberg's channel... Wanted to ask in any video's comments about Komplete Kontrol - why do you like it and will you recommend it. Inspired I wanted to search videos on RUclips on using Komplete Kontrol with Cubase... But no need! Your video just came out! xD
Thanks the Universe and as always thank you Dom! I'll take some water and I'll be prepared to have a joy from watching))) Love your channel and love new videos here! Especially when they just magically come when I need them like in this case)
Hahahaha so glad the planets aligned for this! Have fun Maksim!
Great, Dom. This is just what I need to know. The shop salesperson could not have done this so well. Yes, keyboard touch is important.
I have a cheap 61 key controller, but the LED shows exactly what all the knobs and controllers are doing. I'm looking at the S88 at the next sale to go with Native's Komplete UCE - half-price at the middle of the year. I have visual-cognitive problems with Cubase's small icons etc. unless the screen is huge. A cursor can only do one action at a time - and is nothing like a proper set of physical controllers.
Hi Dom, As a long time user of Cubase I needed a controller upgrade, so I purchased the s88 a few weeks ago. The feel of the keybed is brilliant, (although different to the 61 note, ie harder feel as in it is more a piano action) so thanks for the insights in your vid, a great help .. all good, apart from that bloody strip controller, I agree it is a pain sometimes but, as you say, I guess I'll get used to it. Didn't know about the panning trick thing so thanks for that. Really love your vids as they're so down to the point and easy to follow ... and not rushed like some others. Keep up the great work mate .. best regards.
Another great video :-) Well done your content is always very insightful
I second you in this bro about the place of the touch strip, very very annoying. My hand's palm ALWAYS accidentally hit it hundreds of times and killed the sound UNTIL I discover it was the cause. Bloody heck NI! thanks bro for this :)
Good video, that said I use a Nektar keyboard that offers in depth intergration with Cubase (and many plugins) and Reason
Oh, I have been so under utilizing my s61. Thanks Dom!
Wow , great video , you look pleasant to watch and listen , and convince me to come back to Cubase and have this keyboard :)
Thanks
Thank you Dom! I like your videos, this was very informative and interesting too!
Great vid - you pointed out some great features I always forget to use :)
Same probs with invisible pan function for shuttle wheel (time for console label tape!) Think analog mixing desk-- volume faders below, pan pots up top. :)
Blessings! Great videos...would be awesome to see how you would expand on this video and also go into how to map new midi remote scripting for the komplete Kontrol s series. Thanks.
Agreed!!!
Great video mate. I think I'm sold...:) THANKS
functional video thanks a lot
!
LOOKS so fancy but knobs after a point of time just try to auto-read and write that is the big issue, there should be a lock button below each knob and fader so that they don't send signals automatically
Really cool !!! pan ;)
This is truly helpful, thank you Dom!
Have also the MK49II - My physical knob no. 4 is already damaged after 1 year, and I definitely did not stress it too much. A little Googling shows, that I'm not the first one, especially with knob no. 4. So, they should care first of the quality of the expansive product for itself, and than add more knobs...
Finally a video about this......sorry a proper video about this.....
Thank you my friend!
Sorry if already mentioned in the comments, I've read that you can disable the touch strip on other Komplete models so assume you could do the same here. Details are on the NI website. Just ordered the S61 on the back of this vid😁. Cheers Dom. 🖖
I have been using this for 2 years with Cubase.. Good job Dom as always. I was wondering when you would the MK2. There are more features but you nailed it in that short period of time, again Thanks
Very useful! Thank you Dom!!
Komplete Kontrol doesn't come up in my Cubase 12 plugins. Same with guitar rig 6 and absynth. However, other plugins come up fine in Cubase 12. What am I missing? I need some advice Dom. Love your videos as they've all helped me tremendously!
Haha, your intro is epic! Love it! :D
This is really interesting. I've ignored Komplete Kontrol and the keyboard-software integration for many many years. It's so much nicer than I remember.
I wonder how long it will be before they install a miniPC inside the case and it hosts the plugins internally? All in one. The embedded computer scene is getting really interesting lately. Quite powerful CPUs out there these days in tiny hockeypuck sized formfactor.
So, I just used my hands dandy label maker to put a little PAN and VOL label above & below the joystick so I remember that shift function.
Very interesting video, thank you, Dom!
Thanks for the video. Just bought the S49 because of it (probably should stop watching your videos because it usually costs me money - just kidding). I'm a guitar player. Only got 10 fingers, so 49 keys is probably too many for me, but controlling Cubase and being able to have a keyboard is great. I have the Komplete sound library so it makes a lot of sense to get an integrated controller. Thanks again.
great video
Perfect review and so we'll explained ! Thanks a lot !
Glad it helped!
Hi Dom, now you are guilty of having me to rearrange one of my studio setups so the Komplete Kontrol S61 MkII is easier to access in order to control Cubase 😉
Thanks for the great info and hints!
hahahaha sorry Jose! Enjoy!
Hi Dom, great vid!! I'm curious to know how Cubase 12's MIDI Remote Mapping has changed/improved your workflow with the Komplete Kontrol keyboard? In particular, interested to know how you're now able to use 3rd party plugins using the physical knobs now that you can assign everything within Cubase. Would love to see a vid on that!!!
Hi Dom have you ever made a video on how to set up Multi outlets in Kontakt Player 6 in cubase...?
Thank you Dom Great Video
Would have been nice to start with how to set up this keyboard in cubase
Thank you very much Dom, Great video.
You're very welcome Rafael!
Thanks for this Dom. I just got the 61 key version to replace my Panorama P6 (KK has a much better keybed), and i noticed early on about the touch strip! That aside, it really is a great workstaton, the mixer in particular is brilliant. All it needs is a few motorised faders and I can bin my Icon!! 🤣
Yes motorised faders and more knobs! Drum pads too.
I'm thinking about buying one
Great video.thx Dom !!
This is amazing! I was looking for a good Synth_Action keyboard and you just do the video at the best time! Love u Dom (AKA Dr Mix 😉) 😍🤩
The modwheel is annoying tho.
Yes please!!
Would like to see a Montage M version of this video ..
Good
I have the 88 notes. Very very good keybed for a 88 notes controller. But after 5-6 months some notes have a kind of rattle. NI suggest to return the keyboard to à subcontractor for checking and eventually replacing it. I read complaints about that , so I'm not the only one. Apart that, I like the functionnalities that you explain here. Thank's Dom for your impressions and tricks !
For this very reason, I decided to buy the M32 instead and am happy with it -- it gives me Komplete functionality without dropping too much ca$h on a keyboard that many users fault for build problems.
Oh noooo- I hope it all gets sorted my friend! I had the same issue with a very expensive synth back in the day (Virus TI2 Snow) and I had to send it back eventually- I loved this synth otherwise.
Thanks for this super helpful video Dom. I'd love to know how you customised the LEDs in KK. After extensively looking into just that, I concluded it was not possible. What's the secret? Please share how you did it. Thanks so much.
Okay ... Ignore that question. After some digging around on YT, I see how to do it. I was hopeful it would give a way to turn them off entirely (for those times I don't need them), but alas that's not an option. But nice to know how to change the colours, etc.
Thanks Dom for the review of KK mkii midi keyboard in Cubase. Regarding the workflow, do you know if KK plugin offers any multichannel feature to route each midi track to a dedicated instrument within the same KK plugin host instead of having one instance of KK for each track? I’m just trying to figure out how to benefit from the plugin host environment but not adding so much to the resource use of the computer especially if I’m having a project with tens of virtual instrument tracks. Using Kontakt for example I can use quite a few instruments on one instance of Kontakt so I may use 3 to 5 Kontakt instances even for a large project but I imagine using additional resources for having 50 to 80 instances of KK plugins is going to have a big hit on my computer resources. Thanks a lot.
sold! but... I wanted to know how to set it up in Cubase 11 pro....huh... maybe I've missed video 1 lol :) I have the 61 keys and a montage 8 as well... you know... studio config etc.... do you have a video about the connections in Cubase and/or montage needed with the basics that I can watch? thanks!
Hi Dom. Any chance you could create a new version of this video with a tutorial on how to map the Komplete Kontrol keyboards and Maschine? Having trouble getting it to accept the scroll knob (both rotating, up/down and button press)
I just realized maschine mk3 and the plus don't have rgb on the very top row of the translucent buttons for selecting tracks after watching your video on this product
Thank you! Really good video, just as I'm evaluating if I should get this or the Arturia Keylab. Not an easy choice.
Both are great controllers. My KK served me well all these years- I haven't tried the keys on the Keylab but the KK ones are excellent.
nice... do knobs control also plugins? (eq, comp, etc.)
Great video, again!
I also use this keyboard for a couple of years and really like it. However, adding more and more stuff in my studio caused midi-conflicts. Right now the KK is still working as a midi-controller but not with Cubase integration (no transport control etc). Even NI support can't help me: they told me they are aware of the problem but don't have a solution yet.
(for the moment I have Console 1 'knobs', 2 x Console 1 Fader, CC121, Icon Platform M, Icon Platform B, Maschine Mikro, Joué, Touché and KKS61). Dom, don't you have midi-conflicts with all your gear?
Thank you Dom!!! 🎵🎵🎶🎶🎶🎵🎵🎤🎤🎤
Thank you very much Dom, very interesting video. Would a video of M-Audio Pro 49 with Cubase be possible? . Thank you very much again.
Hi Dom I attend your videos and learn a bit. I like a good preset and listen to a lot of samples and NI stock wishing I could play 2 sounds half the 88 each like divide the keyboard. I bought 88 for the touch works pretty good but it's a beast on the table. I need keys and strings or bass and guitar is there a way around .. like to divide up the 88 ? Thanks for your tutorials I always learn better in the class.
I just started researching the s61 MK2 so this is very timely. I think it could be the right solution for me. Not compatible with Sonar, though. I have Cubase Elements that came with my MODX.
Ugh...looked at the compatibility again and it's not compatible with Elements.
0:40 " ... I need to upgrade to the 61 ... " Why not the 88 version already? :^)
Also, this video helps me decide between this or the Arturia KeyLab. It seems to be more about its integration with kontakt/v collection than the DAW itself. Thanks.
the 88 is great btw
88 should be great but it won't fit my tray and it will be heavier. Plus, I have the Montage 8 which in my opinion has the best piano action on a non- piano ever :) But it's mostly a space issue :)
When you load a sound will it create the track in Cubase or do you still need to create tracks with the mouse?
hi thanks for all your great videos dom, been a great help, i have a question im hoping someone can help me with, i have a komplete kontrol s49 and cubase 12 pro, i'm trying to assign a macro key command to one of the toggle buttons on the top on the controller and its like it dont see the cc command, can assign a qwerty keyboard letter no problem, just the midi cc it dont seem to see. any help much appreciated .
Keep you the cubase tips n tricks my man..
hi there
I have the M-Audio ctrl49 as a midi controler, the faders work well as the mixer thing, and I do use the knobs as cut off
as additional I use the native kontrol32 ,now I I see it contols all the cubase functions ant it took over the transport keys by itself
I have Maschine mk1 the old guy to do the drum kits
I tried to connect the e-drums by midi cable to the maschine or to the midi controler it works bad
for some reason it seems to me to many controles have some sort of working one against the other
I JUST BOUGHT ONE. A61.
boom as always!
Thanks my man! :)
Dom, do u have a preset available to download for this awsome Integration
Hi Dom, i have now the S61 and it’s a great keyboard, but as a midi keyboard controller, i miss a quite simple functionality: Be able to choose my midi out channel from the keyboard… For multitimbral VSTs and hardware synth, it would be really usefull.
The problem I have found with using Native Instruments with Cubase is that Cubase keeps crashing, and from the Steinberg Cubase forum I am not alone. As a result of watching this video I have just bought an S61 mk 2 in the hope that this would cure it, but alas, no. Do you not have this problem and if not what is your secret?!
How do you program “double stop” button to start from the beginning of the tracks. It’s very simple in ableton
Thankyou so much.
I love my S88 as my Montage (I bought it, because you love it) and my Nord Stage 3. And now I can use it much more controlling Cubase. The Panning is cool. I didn‘t know does it works before. -
Since I load Big Sur a few NI Libraries doesnt work. I hope some update will come soon and hope that is the reason?
You use the NI libraries with KK, not with Kontakt in Cubase? Or does it depend on the librarie?
Thank you for learning so much from you! You make my life better! Without your help i would never check all these great technics! Best wishes from Germany! Stay healthy!
Hey Holger! This is the reason why I haven't upgraded to Big Sur yet- that being said, I think NI released an update fixing the issues. Maybe check on your Native Access app?
I tend to use Kontakt rather than KK- the reason being future compatibility. If I open an project down the line and a plugin is missing, then I will know it's Kontakt 6 for example but if Komplete Kontrol is missing it's impossible to know which plugin was running inside it. But other than that, KK is soooo much more convenient than Kontant when looking for sounds. So sometimes I use KK to find the sound and then I replace it with the "real" instrument instance ;)
@@DomSigalas Hey Dom! Thanks a lot! O.K. Searching the sound with KK and using it in Cubase with Kontakt. (Maybe you could show us sometimes, how you use Kontakt in Cubase? It depends a little bit on the compatibility between NI and VST III ? I love Steinberg and NI, but as an user from both sometimes I think the conversation/compatibility between both is äähh not sooo .... perfect ?? Or I'm to bad using it rightly .... -
By the way - I didn't want to upgrade on Big Sur ... I was on the telephone and the Computer startet, .... and I clicked automatically, ... and then it was too late, go back ... that's life ...so I have to wait for updates from NI - Thank you very very much for your time Dom!
Does the Mute/Solo Buttons work in Mixer mode ? I'm using Studio One, and they don't work in Mixer mode, which is pretty strange.
Edit: Got it @ 11:00 ... Thanks, video helped already. :D
Hello Dom! Thank's for the video! I just bought a second hand KK S88 MK1. Unfortunateley, when I use the transport controls, they also send midi notes from the higher octaves which is very disturbing. Any idea on how to fix this issue?
Cheer's from France! ;)
Dom can you explain how to set up komplete Kontrol on Cubase pro 11 as a controller thx
