- Attempting a different vlog style of video here to try and capture a bit more of the beginning to end process of scouting, planning and capturing an outing under the stars. Managed to get a single clear day in a week while staying with family on the coast of Victoria which just happened to coincide with a new moon. I headed to one of my favourite dark sky spots in the area to see what I could capture, using very low level constant lighting on the beautiful sandstone cliffs in the foreground. Unfortunately I arrived about an hour after I had intended and was only about an hour into the session when a very thick sea fog rolled in and completely drowned out all visibility of the sky, and the walk back to my vehicle for that matter.
Not a great a night as it could have been, but that is absolutely a part of what makes up these astro adventures. Hope you enjoy, please feel free to leave any questions down in the comments section and I'll do my best to help.

Great work Dominic. It's always good to see you out there in the field. That looks very much like a spot I visited when I was down that way last year .. !!! If not it had a creek just like that.
Thanks Richard 👍! Yep, I reckon it might be. Wasn't even at risk of getting my toes wet in that creek last time I was there, amazing how sand can be moved by moving water.
Very nice.
Thanks Lawrence, appreciated 👍.
Great effort….. keep it up.
Really appreciated John, thanks for watching 👍.
@@AstroRoad stuck in the Melbourne lockdown and looking at the awesome blue skies over there mate. Pretty grey over here.
Finally getting to fly back to NZ on Thursday. Love to catch a clear sky in WA one day.
Sorry to hear that John, this lockdown stuff certainly wears at the soul. I'm actually in Victoria as well, I recorded all of this episode on the western end of the Great Ocean Road the weekend before we went into lockdown.
Would love to get to WA one day too, Ben Broady is one of my favourite time-lapse photographers based up in the Kimberly. Definately worth a look!
Anyway, hope your trip back to NZ goes to plan (signs are looking good), not a bad place for landscape eye candy itself 🙂.
Lockdowns have dampened the mood to go shooting.
Last shot I took was the last Aurora show back in mid May.
We get plenty of fog this time of year in the SW Vic Coast.
Definately know what you mean Duane. After our big lock down it took me some real effort on the motivation front to get back out there. What worked for me was first getting out for some daytime scouting to re-establish the connection with the landscape. Then for night outings I kept it simple, instead of going out for 6 hour sessions (typical for time-lapse sequences) , I went out for an hour or so much closer to home. Some of those shots I didn't even do post processing on, it was more for getting me back into the swing of it than the photographic results.
I'm still not getting out as much as I'd like to, but much more than I was and I don't feel like it is my motivation level holding me back.
Hopefully you find yourself some time (and some clear weather) to give yourself a bit of a push just to get out a take a few shots.
As for weather, I was definately lucky to get a clear few hours this time of year. I'm not too fussed either way, watching the wild ocean in those parts was one of favourite things to do when I lived in the area many moons ago.
