How I got accepted to MIT for grad school

  • This is the beginning of a series of videos where I document my 10 year journey towards getting accepted into my dream school, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). As an international student, we don't all get access to resources and guidance as easily as kids do in more developed countries like the US. My chances of getting in was low, but I eventually build my knowledge and skills up to be ready to contribute to future innovations at the MIT Media Lab.

      Hi! Thank you so much for sharing your story! I have the almost exact situation! I’m a senior right now, same dream to work at the media lab and bring ideas to life. I did okay in school and would say I was a good student in terms of gpa and grades. I am involved with sports for two years and in nhs because that was mainly all the clubs and extracurricular offered. But same as you I never did anything related to build on my passions in stem. I was the same as you in terms of failing the act and sat being below average. I am/was so discouraged and heartbroken about my scores and now it’s too late for this application season to bring them higher. I want to apply but I know my scores would be an absolute turnoff in terms of admission. But your story gave me something to look forward to and that there’s still some hope to continue to work hard and try again in the future. Thank you so much! ❤

So, I have like 3 gpa in my undergraduation(I was suffering from some health problems and was depressed and now I'm not feeling confident about applying to top universities like MIT😅) and I wrote 2 research papers and didn2 projects all in machine learning and i did 1 internship and participated in 1 hackathon(did not select for second round though) and my hobbies are writing books and I published one book...so can you recommend me what else should I do so that it can increase my chances at doing masters at MIT in machine learning?... thank you so much

    This inspires me so much and I want to give you my thanks. My dream is to go to MIT, but I've been dealing with a lot of things like mental health problems. After joining two clubs in highschool, I stopped going and I got even more depressed. Now I'm back and fired up, and my goal is to start small and take a big leap and get into MIT for graduate school. Going for UMASS Amherst as my first goal, I hope I can ignite my passion over there.

    I live in Kenya, which means that if you are not reallllly rich you’re not going to get the guidance you need because the schools literally everyone else goes to and I go to really only care about your grades. I’m leaving Kenya to finish highschool in Canada so I have about 2 months of no school, I decided to learn programming and arduino because I never really won anything when I was younger and never really took any chances, I felt so behind in everything when I would look at students’ MIT maker portfolios and all. This really motivates me to put in the work now, thanks for the video🙏🏽

    • @hilmyakatsuki1665

      @@hassanshah482 yes it can let you catch someone's eyes. Many teachers will also look for lower grades but with academic papers and other experiences. But with good grades you can be on top of others. Like, if someone has the same qualifications as you but also good grades to show their continuous working capabilities then why should they take you instead? It's a normal thing!

    Congrats. My story is also similar to you. I too want to be an inventor, get my hands dirty and build something. But I'm too stupid. I too never was able to clear the round 1 of any of the olympiads, never excelled in school. My english was aweful at that point to apply for unis in US. So I dropped the thought of it, planned to apply for masters later on, and decided to become fluent in english along with 4 yrs of undergrad from my country. But that too isn't going quite well. I failed getting into top notch uni in my country. So I had to settle for a lower one. I'm in my 4th yr of my UG, all my friends got their dream job with dream salaries, and I'm still unemployed getting rejected over and over again since July. I'm just way too stupid for anything. Prior to all of this, I decided that I'll spend 1-2 yrs earning money from the job to do masters as it is hard to get scholarships for masters. But I don't think that plan is going quite well. I feel crushed inside, seeing my dreams getting shattered every now and then. I cry every late night. I'm barely living. I'm a loser. Also, I'm growing old and the responsibilities to earn money to support family are kicking in. I have way too much pressure, and my brain and luck aren't on my side. I want to live my dreams as well. I don't know. I just want to give up life. Thats all I ponder every now and then.

      I feel you. Sometimes, you just have to stop following the same steps that everybody else is doing. You do not need to be good in your classes to be good at building things. There are a lot of tutorials out there teaching us how to do cool things. In my next video, I will talk about the first side project I worked on and how that taught me that even though i am not that good at engineering, I can still build stuff. Honestly, some of us are better at learning when we do projects without grades. I built a 3D printer following a bunch of tutorials online. That gave me the confidence to go on learning and keep building. Also, you don't need good grades to get your dream job. For example, if you are an electrical engineer, you can learn to build a robot using arduino or raspberry pi. Then you learn more about the different sensors you can add to your Arduino. All that by following tutorials. If you are a computer science student, it's even easier. You can watch youtube videos on different concepts and use website like Leetcode to learn different algorithms. Once you have practiced enough, you will start seeing patterns that you can use during your interviews. Will cover more about all these in my upcoming videos. Stay strong, Edwin. You will get there. I will be rooting for you.

      @@ApprenticeDiary Thank you for your kind words. Yes. I have stopped following others. I'm moulding my own path to success but it is discouraging sometimes seeing others. The problem is, I'm interested in other fields as well despite having computer science as my major. Sometimes I do get confused which path to follow in the future. Although with the little time left (whenever I find), I manage to learn about those fields as well. Before, I thought I would study about them for the majority time once I got a job. But the added delays to my plans really upsets me. Thank you for sharing your journey. I'll be definitely be this to my inspiration list.

    • @ApprenticeDiary
      @ApprenticeDiary  Год назад +2

      Every graduate program is different. Most of them requires you to write about your motivation and research of interest. It’s better if you get to know the program or research group you want to get into and contact the professors and their students to get a better idea of what they are currently working on. Use that as the basis to help you write your sop. Make some suggestions as to what you could do and show you got the skills to do them. It’s important to also show your ideas align with their current research… that is why it’s good to talk with their current students.
