- What will Charlotte FC be like in Year One?
All eyes will be on Charlotte FC as the 2022 MLS expansion side plays their debut home match at Bank of America Stadium, hoping to break the single-game regular-season attendance record with a crowd that could push 75,000 onlookers.
Everyone wants to know how they will compare with other expansion clubs in their first year. Will they be like Atlanta or LAFC? Will they be like Minnesota or Cincinnati? Time will tell how the team will perform on the field, however is that the most important measurement for a new club in their inaugural season?
Calen Carr and Susannah Collins traveled to Charlotte ahead of their historic home opener, to get a sense of what this club hopes to do in year one. Discover the hopes and dreams of the supporters, the challenges and pitfalls facing coach Miguel Angel Ramirez, and ultimately how this club will represent the Queen City and the greater region in Major League Soccer.

Honestly, I'm loving how MLS is growing. I'm from London England and I love watching MLS. I support Chelsea in my home country but I love seeing new teams join the MLS. I hope I can make it to a MLS game one day
nah mate support Man U
Love what MLS is doing- glad we’re part of the growth- as American we like to be the best and that will soon come!
It’s been okay there’s still need promotion relegation Canada and Australia are implementing it already and Mexico is returning 2023-24 let’s not be late on an obvious system structure
@@JR_1400 I don’t see the benefits of promotion and relegation. First, that’s not the norm in American sports. Second, promotion and relegation will likely turn American fans off. You don’t spend $300 million on a team, have a huge stadium, only to get relegated.
I think the stable league structure is great. Especially with a new sport that really needs to grow. Investors know their investment is protected and will be stable in value, fans know their team is in the top flight and can commit accordingly.
Promotion and relegation brings no benefits for soccer in America.
Thoughts? 🤔🙂
Nunca serão grande no futebol (soccer) o futebol não é para o estilo americano ! Americano tem que continuar é com seus esportes onde são grandes e esquecer este esporte por que este é do do mundo e americano tem mais que ficar na sua bolha.
I don't think people realize how popular soccer is in Charlotte. There is a huge fan base who would leave work mid day and head to the bar to watch Champions League and then go back to work. When Arsenal came to town the stadium was pretty packed. Wasn't a sold out stadium but still a huge turn out. There is a ton of passion for the sport in the city and even though I don't live in Charlotte anymore it's the first MLS club that speaks to me and it's my team. It was the missing hole in my heart to become an MLS follower. As a life long EPL, La Liga, Serie A follower I finally have a club that I can call mine. I can see an ATL CLT rivalry brewing.
Here here. I'm a huge Bundesliga fan (Moenchengladbach, Koeln, Munchen), and I was soooo excited that we got our own MLS/professional team in Charlotte. Now, I have a hometeam that I can truly call MINE. And I agree - feels like we have a rivlary with ATL brewing.
Just got to say as an atlanta United fan, what a fucking incredible answer by the coach at the 6 minute mark. That’s the type of leadership that’s gonna take this club places
Olá amigo!
i saw the highlights of Charlotte first MLS match, they're not too bad for a new football club at MLS level, only need to improve more on finishing. glad to see MLS growing
As a TFC fan I hope Charlotte does well this season! Good luck 👍
Soccer is just big in the southeast it always has. Hence Atlanta, Orlando, Miami, Nashville and now Charlotte.
It's going to Rival Cascadia once Miami & Charlotte get up to speed.
St. Louis to follow in 2023 & then Las Vegas is now being heavily rumored to land a team soon
Can’t wait to capture the opening home game on Saturday. Excitement levels are high!
This video reminds me of the old "The Movement" videos Calen Carr used to do. Love it! I hope more videos like this come out.
As a NY Red Bulls, NYFC and Atlanta United fan, I really want Charlotte (and all of MLS) to do extremely well. I would love to have a rivalry between Atlanta and Charlotte where we pack both stadiums to capacity. That would be sooooo exciting.
Best of wishes on their new club.
It don't work like that my guy. You can't like both NY Clubs.
Thanks for the warm welcome to the MLS. I would enjoy a rivalry between Charlotte FC and Atlanta United.
This was an excellent video! Loved it
Congrats to Charlotte from the west coast!
Thank you!
Its weird how American calls it Soccer but all there soccer club is called Charlotte Football Club, LAFC, Toronto FC, New York City FC etc. Its just weird. But nvrtheless... MLS is going into the right direction. A league to watch nowadays. 👍🏽
They pick “Charlotte FC” over Charlotte Crown and Charlotte Fortune?! 🥴🥴🥴🥴 come on man!
The monarch’s tho????
It is amazing to see (from an english perspective) how the MLS is growing at such a strong rate. All you need now is some promotion/ relegation and just maybe you could become just as big as some of the top european leagues.
Promotion and relegation will never happen as it’s a closed league and owners would loose millions due to expansion fees
@@matthewsmith8727 I know. its a shame really as thats part of what makes alot of the bigger leagues so entertaining.
@@Taraferreday I love mls it’s a great league I fly to Colorado from England to watch games as often as I can but mls has a ceiling they will never take over any European league or even the Mexican league the business model that mls is built on will hold back the league
Love this feature! Great work, Calen, Susannah and team! For the Crown!!!
Charlotte was always a good market for soccer...remembering the Carolina Lighting coached by Rodney Marsh in the old ASL. Playing for NY United, Charlotte always packed the old Kiwanis Stadium...that was '80/'81...looks like they've got all the pieces in place to sustain and succeed 👍
Watching from Indonesia ..!!!
Keep Spirit Charlotte Fc ..!!!
I'm not gonna hold it. You guys did him so dirty in that thumbnail 😅🤣🤣🤣🤣
Don’t come to the naranja …love that y’all have a team . But it’s on !Houston Herreras Home let’s go Dynamo 2022 so much to come MLS GROWING AND LOVING IT 😍
Awsome this it getting more interesting cant wait to see this club to play
0:10 Did NOT expect them to find this little city skyline mural in my quiet neighborhood!
Sergio ruiz es un buen jugador de fútbol , aprovecharlo por q os dará equilibrio en el centro .
As long as they're not the Blue Furries, I'm good with them. :)
Me encanta la MLS, ojalá puedan participar en la Copa Libertadores de América, sería brutal mucho mejor que la Champios leage.
There a DCI group call Carolina Crown so idk if that why they didnt use it
The name Charlotte Crown would've been nice. Totally beats the generic FC that's been happening for the past decade for new MLS clubs and at the lower levels of the US professional soccer system.
Charlotte Crown sounds like a street name in south London 🤮
Charlotte crown and Charlotte town was the favorite names of the city, we think it was pre determined and we didn’t actually have a say in our name. But I guess playing it safe isn’t always the worst thing
the Crown is becoming our informal nickname
I Agree... not original
@@NK11NGA Well it's a good thing the club is in the States then!
Any idea if we could see Darwin Machis join Charlotte during the summer MLS transfer window if/when issue is resolved?
Good question, it’d be nice if he were able to get those legal issues resolved.
Dude, monarchs was sounds better than just plain FC
Na monarchs sound like a youth girls team.
@@Rebel-eq7ul No, it sounds like a cool name. I mean, I don't hang around youth girls teams so I wouldn't know the names of them.
@@TickleMeElmo55 man hopefully you don’t have a daughter then, no monarchs is bad unless you are in KC honoring the Negro leagues. Other than that it’s definitely bad and youth league
@@Rebel-eq7ul Hmmm, pretty arguable though. But yeah, I think I had another alternative that sounds better. The name of Charlotte was after a Queen's name, right? So something that tied to royalty but yet sounds badass. What about Charlotte Knights FC. A band of honorable men who brought the mission from Queen Charlotte to claim the holy grail of US football which is MLS Cup. And their crest is a 🛡with cross swords in front of it, instead of stupid chip that came from cheap casino
Yoooo my boy Lloyd Sam, looking so fly! 😭😭
Of course fútbol is the #1 sport in the world, but here in America hardly anyone watches it. Unless its the world cup, famous players from different nations, or fans of the sport. Over the last decade fútbol has been gaining attention here in America a bit more. So you know its the next sports expansion.
Big up Charlotte Town
So dated with the Town jibe.
10:17 You misspelled the name. He does pronounce his name differently depending on the language but you had the right spelling on another video 2 days before.
Charlotte Monarchs would have been dope
Yeah. It's not in use since the WNBA's Sacramento Monarchs folded in 2009
Love the fact that Charlotte has an MLS team, but I honestly think Charlotte monarchs would’ve been a much better name than Charlotte FC.
Arsenal in blue
They call it soccer, but use FC (football club)?
See you in Atlanta Charlotte.
I guess MLS has completely given up on naming teams… good thing there’s an FC at the end or I might have thought they were playing Football!… oh wait…
Which football my guy?
Look to europe, every club is just FC, United, real or another basic nickname
@@ryanfebrianto8973 the one you kick a ball with
Can I ask you Todd what names do you think would be better ? Like I personally think American sports names are some of the worse. It’s just animals and things that have nothing to do with the history.
I dont like the name changing in MLS like MontReal impact
Do they actually think they can fill the bowl? I doubt they will even fill half of the lower bowl.
Already have
@@treyeskridge1354 Right…. and how is that possible? Their first home game is this Saturday
@@Joshwake 73,500 seats sold for Saturday

If in the future there were a plan for club expansion. That came from the city that well known for its military history. I have a suggestion to name the club. Instead just naming FC or United, duh. The name of Spartak/Spartac/Sparta [city name]. And the crest is a round shield with the V in the middle and the club name surrounds the shield
We're not Greek....
@@PDohm123 neither do Czech, Dutch, and Russian. Yet there are Sparta Rotterdam, Spartac Praha, Spartak Moscow. And another ones, let say Cincinnati Bengals. Bengali Tiger was not endemic fauna from Ohio yet they named it as Bengals. The named dynamo/dinamo was common name that tied to or establish by police force in ex or current communist state in eastern europe. Did you see Houston dynamo was tied to police force or communism?

We have a minor league baseball team that is already called the Charlotte Knights...
@@PDohm123 aaahh I see. Ok never mind then
did they seriously choose Charlotte FC over all those cool names? smh
This explains why Carolina Crown is named that way. The team certainly could have done better than a generic "FC". I guess when people are free to be whoever they want, they'll choose to be like everybody else.
It's ironic, eh? It's anything but creative, original or innovative.
There's a reason it's called a tradition. Funny how people, like you, like trash talk about traditions. It's almost like you have no traditions of your own....
Are they playing in a football stadium Bc if they are that’s been done b4 just sayin
It's the largest in mls though so ig that's something
🇮🇷💚❤💙🤝🇺🇸
Funny they named the club FC but they still call it soccer
There some thing that they’re doing wrong
ok
Bring 2 or 3 known mexican players and this stadiums will be full every home game
David Tepper has enough money to buy MESSI. He’s a hedge fund owner
Answer: They will be absolutely terrible
I think the inaugural season was equal for the promotion. I mean, you won't expect Norwich become the premier League champion on their promotion season.
@@ryanfebrianto8973 The MLS would comepte with EFL League One, EFL Championship would destroy the MLS
I started watching on the MLS site but, as always, it stinks. Sad I had to come here to see this.
Cannot wait until Atlanta claps them
BOOOO
This team will be a flop. Playing in a football stadium, what a joke.
Like noted flops Seattle Sounders and Atlanta United
