Lahav Shani talks about the Symphonie fantastique by Berlioz

He saw her on the stage, in the role of Juliet, and fell in love with her that evening. She ignored him for many years, during which his love became a dazzling obsession. And from the abysses of despair, drug delusions, and fantasies of passion, the "fantastique" symphony of Hector Berlioz was composed. Lahav Shani, the orchestra's Music Director Designate, tells the exciting and surprising story behind the piece.

I came upon this again, and again I am struck by how superb a musician Lahav Shani is, and as an explainer of music equally gifted. His Hebrew is educated and sophisticated, and by not reading the subtitles, I hope to absorb his level of language. He brings out many subtleties that escaped me when I have listened to this symphony.

Fascinating narration. I had learned this story in school, but completely forgot it. The idee fixe theme. Has this symphony ever been set as a ballet? It certainly has the material for dramatic choreography. I actually don't know of any other symphony that has such a detailed, specific program.
