    Interestingly, the composers Pasek and Paul initially intended this to be a darker story critical of grief performance and based on an experience of Benj Pasek had at school where everyone pretended to be friends with a person who died. The book writer, Steven Levenson, is the one who came up with this story and made Evan the “hero” despite his actions. I would have liked to see their original story but it may not have been a hit.

      Yeah cause we already had heathers, but I agree, DEH should’ve definitely been a black comedy where Evan just gets eviler and eviler (I mean, Evan does get more and more unrootable to the point that it’s ridiculous that he’s basically the hero of the musical) and ends up being either severely punished or just accepts his sociopathic tendencies. We would’ve gotten a much better musical. And by a much better musical I mean a musical that isn’t bad.

    Actors who are almost 30 and playing a teen is ok in theater where your 50 feet away from the actor’s face. But in film, when the cameras right in your face, you can’t pull that off. It’s so distracting and takes you out of the movie. It’s like, that actor should be cast as a high school teacher about 6 years into his career.

    I know I’m late to this review, but Ben Platt’s father was the originator of the broadway story where Ben played himself for several years where he wasn’t as old. By the time he made the movie, he wanted to keep Ben as his character in the movie, and even used a lot of CGI to make him appear younger in the movie, but failed completely. Hence, the “creepy” looking parts and scenes when he’s singing. I think they could’ve done a better job at making Ben Platt looking younger, but I am glad they kept him as the character, bc of his talent and voice in general that made the Broadway show so popular.
    Where I think it failed miserably for me and how Joseph mentioned “out of touch”, is the songs vs. the story surrounding them. The songs were supposed to be deep, meaningful, relatable, all the feels, but the story surrounding the inspirational songs was terrible! This kid (Evan) basically benefited off of someone’s suicide, ran with it bc of the attention he was getting, not only from people at school, but also the attention he was getting from connor’s family (connors mom, the dad he wish he could’ve had, and especially connor’s sister who he had an extreme crush on - it’s all gross!) a sense of the type of family and things he’s never had…I mean, c’mon. It makes Evan’s character a terrible person whether or not he thought he was initially trying to help Connor’s family move on, felt pressured by Connor’s mom (Amy Adam’s), whether or not he didn’t know how viral the story would eventually become. That’s where the writing failed miserably. It’s literally like the songs were made to be beautiful, inclusive and show other people that they’re not alone in dealing with certain mental issues. Like, tf?! I basically like the movie just for the songs and not the terrible story surrounding it.

    The plot is eerily similar to the 2019 netflix show "The Politician" in which Ben Platt plays a socially awkward rich teenager who sings a lot and is in love with a closeted jock who commits suicide. Then the jock's vengeful girlfriend runs against Ben Platt for student body president and they both exploit the suicide for political gain. I would be shocked if the show wasn't crafted to capitalize on the Dear Evan Hansen Broadway hype

    Once again, a great review. I saw the movie at an advanced screening last week. I had seen the play so I already knew the story, but it didn't translate that well on screen. Singing on a stage and then signing when the camera is all up on your face are two completely different things. I can see how those unfamiliar with it would see it as manipulative, shallow, and awkward. Unlike the movie, Evan doesn't try to redeem himself in the play. After the fallout, he accepts his fate and it ends at the orchard. I never got why so many young kids loved the play because Evan is basically the villain in the story. It's supposed to show how lying and social media are bad, but no one really learns anything at the end. Only diehard fans will probably love the movie. Also, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, who wrote the songs, also wrote the songs for The Greatest Showman and La La Land. Dear Evan Hansen came out first. So if the song style sounded familiar, now you know.

    • @larrybates4925
      @larrybates4925 3 года назад

      I just exited the movie and have seen the play. I think this movie is too "watered down". The tension in the movie is no where close to that portrayed in the movie. They left out the sexual tension between Evan and Zoe. The tension between Alana, Jared, and Evan was practically non-existent, the tension with his mother is downplayed. Had they not cut "Good for You" people would have under stood. Jared was no where near as funny as in the play. Very loud- mouthed, sarcastic and cynical. "Does Anyone Have a Map" sets the tone for the tension in the Murphy family and between Evan and his mother. Jared also was not gay in the musical and I guess they were too afraid of NAMBLA since they cut a portion of "Sincerely Me".other than too much make-up for Ben regardless of age, I think they did a good job with what they had. Yes, what Evan did was bad, but I did not get the feelinng of the stess Evan was under other than he cries a lot. In addition to the power of soci media, we cannot forget that teens today are medicated with anti-depressants and anti-anxiety medications. They feel they can't live up to what they see on Facebook and Instagram, they are lonely, and do have feelings of suicide. That's is why it is popular among teenagers and younger adults.

    People keep saying, "they don't think Evan is as bad as everyone says he is" and "it's understandable that he got caught up in people pleasing". However, I strongly disagree. I can more so understand if he had just said they were friends for a short time and that was the only letter he received. Evan goes from 0 to 100 and makes a mountain of fake emails after one dinner with the family. I cannot understand how anyone trying to people please to go that far with it. Then, he completely throws the memory of Connor aside by not attending the meetings because he starts benefitting from the lie. Then after the lie is out and everything is said and done, what repercussions does Evan face? He can't go to college right away and no one talks to him at lunch. Okay, well if he hadn't lied in the first place, that's the same place he would have been in. Evan Hansen just came across as such a gross character and Ben Platt looking 30 doesn't help

      It tried WAY to hard to be feel good which feels so grossly forced. At one point during Evan's speech, they start showing thousands of clips of people reacting to the message and it forms Connor's face. Because this memory is all a lie, it feels creepy and manipulative that they are trying to make this moment uplifting.

    I was 50/50 on whether to watch this movie, which to date I still haven't watched it because something felt suspiciously off about this movie. But after watching your reviews, it now confirms my suspicion - it's definitely 'clickbait'! The movie's trailer portrayed this movie to be about a popular teen boy (Connor) who soon dies after befriending Evan Hansen, a socially awkward shy schoolmate. But after Connor's family and the school community mistakenly find out that Evan & Connor were close friends from a letter allegedly left behind by Connor, Evan immediately inherited the recognition & popularity of Connor. The trailer further portrayed about Evan's personal growth by learning to overcome his social awkwardness, his inability to make friends, to explore beyond his comfort zone and lastly, Evan learning to accept & love himself. Meanwhile, the movie's use of its trailer was just a form of manipulation by using clickbait methods to pull on the people's heartstrings - exactly what Joseph mentioned early in his review. I'm so glad I watched your review beforehand; thank you for same!

    Great review! I think the reason the age is such a huge contention point is that he’s the only actor that actually looks out of place. Plenty of defenders of his casting try to bring up grease as an example of casting older actors but at least in Grease, EVERYONE looked old, so nobody was singled out and halfway through the movie, you forget about their ages. I understand Ben Platt was similar in age to his other actors but they at least believably looked like teenagers, he does not.

    • @HopeGardner3amed
      @HopeGardner3amed 3 года назад +1

      Also in grease most of the plot wasn't too questionable, just typical rom com stuff. This movie is too serious for that type of casting.
      Alex Boniello who played Connor on Broadway explained pretty well the casting issue for himself as a 30 year old in entertainment "[he looks] too old to play teenagers and [he looks] too young to play a parent of a teenager". They are both I think in that weird age where they have grown out of a type and not into a new one yet.

    The whole Connor and family thing was more of a distraction from his deep depression, and a glimpse of what he could have, and once he got a taste of that he couldn’t let it go.

    I know this is an old review but I still think about this casting situation. The issue isnt that hes too old or really his age, they didnt even try to make his look young looking. Some people do not have a naturally young looking face. Many actors/actresees do have naturally young looking faces and you dont have to do much. I.e Amy McAdams. Im not saying if Ben Plath is or isnt, there were certain angles I saw him where he looked younger and others where he looked 30. And I think certain looks or effects have to be justified in the storyline. It didnt make sense to not have a young look for someone who is trying to potray a loser teen with issues who have no friends.

    Evan looks like a senior citizen, makes it hard to believe the story. Also the exaggerated faces he does is very theatrical and awkward.

    I know this video has been out a while but I think I was one of the only people in my friend group that didn't like Dear Evan Hansen. To me most of the songs (if not all) are super cheesy or corny or extremely preachy (the song You Will Be Found just really sounds like a church song to me and I hate it). That being said considering I don't like the musical I very much doubt I'll ever watch the movie

    the psychic thing is perfect. Also thank you, everyone seems so off, that you hope for a better movie....but only for a little bit. Your realize it's just bad, and expecting good. Also Ben is just not, likable, even just physically as he is acted. Ben doesn't grow, and it's sad that one thinks that just being popular is the cure for anxiety and depression.... not the therapy and medication and such that his mom has been getting for him. Hey anxious and depressed people, only when you get attention and popular will you feel better.

    To start off, The Greatest Showman was NEVER on Broadway 😂 Everything you all said are problems I had with the Broadway show. And the whiteness of it as well. It seemed like he did it to get into Zoe's pants as well. I'm definitely not risking Covid-19 and wearing a mask to see this film adaptation. You guys were spot on and this was fun to watch. Also, that is the way Ben performed the songs on Broadway and it seemed ridiculous for him to perform it that way in a film. I also agree this story is clickbait. Thanks for making me laugh guys!

    I saw the musical and it was fantastic. I had also listened to the soundtrack and was aware of the premise of the show. I think it was the producers and director's fault for Ben Platt's look in the movie. A number tv and movie characters are played by actors in their 20s. I was worried that the play wouldn't translate well. It sounds like it didn't.

      I agree that the story just didn’t translate well to film. Too much of it was filmed via close-ups which made it feel overly awkward and over the top melodramatic. I really wish we had just gotten a Hamilton-style recording of the original cast doing the stage version.
