"I can't build it for what I paid for it.." truer words have never been spoken. This should be required learning for EVERY would-be hot rod builder.. My dad's philosophy was "buy the best you can afford - and save money on the rebuild ". Great truck and I'm glad you shared this one! Enjoy!
That's why I don't really build anything anymore. I enjoy the building but I always end up selling for pennies when I'm done and want something else. Now I buy completed projects and make them mine after all the expensive work is done. I've actually got my money back when selling since I wasn't the one who spent 30k to build a 3k car.
@@clevelandmaker386 Yep. these days you can't pull up in the wrong driveway without getting shot at. Not saying I didn't see a dude with a gun open the door as a kid looking to cut grass for 5bucks, but at least you got that courtesy of asking, then being told, "5dollars?!? You get the hell out my yard!" At least Clint Eastwood told them to "Get off my lawn!" before he started shooting. I got a guy 2 blocks from my house who has about a 48 rusty chevy pickup sitting on jack stands for months, and white wagon style rims, and I am very interested in making an offer on, but he always scowls at me when I drive by slowly, drooling over his truck. I look and see he probably won't like me with his political stickers on his other car's bumper. Used to be you see an old boy with a vehicle beside the street needing attention, no one cared who ya voted for, they knew you liked the same kind of car, they might make some cash, and nothing else mattered. You might even make a best friend in the end. I will wait until I see him outside with his wife, or until a sale sign pops up. Not gonna die for a simple question.
My late uncle had a 6 Window he fully restored, Beautiful metallic purple, show winner a few times, Unfortunately never got to see it, he passed away on the other side of the country on his beach front property surrounded by his beautiful family and I’m not sure what they’re doing with the truck. They’re sure as hell not giving it to some random cousin they’ve never met🤣. Hope it goes to a place of love!
At LMC Truck Gathering last Saturday I got to say hi to you and Bill (Puddin's sidekick) by my '56 Chevy 3200 on a Ford Ranger chassis/running gear. I have to say you, Puddin and Sleeperdude are the only channels I have time to watch. Hope ya'll stay real! You and Puddin braved the winds and cold to shake hands with a ton of fans. Come see us again sometime soon!!!
I am right there with ya, my girl and me drove up there as Puddin said it would be his only show of the year. I was most surprised to see Mortske and Bill there and get a chance to talk with some of my favorite creators.
Ok, I'm going to stick my nose into this argument. I believe ol' Puddin is correct. A "lift" lifts the subject from underneath, like in most automotive shops. A "hoist" lifts the subject from above, as in a locomotive repair shop or shipyard. I may be wrong, but that's my story and I'm sticking to it. Love your vids (and your Duff).
SO SO HAPPY FOR YOU! I know I had wanted Grandpa's 47 Ford PU but my uncle sold it, then Ralphs (Dads Farming Mentor) 49 Chevy PU but I missed it, then I did buy a 47 Chevy Sedan but Dad Had hauled away while I was in the Army, Just a lot of Missed opportunity. So Glad you went for it and now you will love it forever. And make it right for you. Never sell it. It has to be a keeper for you, Congrats !!!! Dennis in Virginia
Great older truck.. Take the chain off the motor mount. Take the motor mount an drill through the mount put a bolt in an shave the head of the bolt. You now have a reg mount that can't come a part... Ran that mounts for years, an I had a heavy foot with a 4 speed trans. An lot of burn outs..
The thrill of watching something forgotten and broken come back to life is missing here but I'm glad you have something nice. You deserve it for all the entertainment you have given us
I really appreciate the way you bring family into your channel. From dropping that LS into your dads Buick to this truck. You are one of the few RUclipsrs I have tremendous admiration and respect for. Awesome dude….just awesome.
The 47 was one of nicest at the Gathering this Saturday. I'm the guy that talked about the 1990 Chevy G10 shorty van I'm swapping in a LQ4 6.0L. Anyways nice meeting you and Puddin' it was a good show. You, Puddin' and Slick50 are some of the nicest, most genuine RUclipsrs I know of. God bless y'all.
Very Cool Truck So many options for upgrades. The direction your planning sounds awesome. Thanks for sharing the back story. One of my favorite years leaned to drive in one back in 75.
Nice freaking truck and yeah I totally agree tinted windows and chrome grill and bumpers the only thing that surprised me that truck looks like it should lump but when you started it when you got it I was surprised it didn't have a fairly decent sounding cam but that is awesome you got that truck because you are the right person for it
What a great build.. really nice to get something that's pretty much done, you already know its history, nothing seriously wrong with it, just minor touch ups.. Sweeeet. I'm sure he didn't dog you on the price either, but whatever you paid I'm SURE it's worth it!
Mortske - I couldn't agree more. You can;t take it with you! I turn 65 in a few months, I just retired after 27 years as an Attorney. My first project is a 1973 Dodge D600, with the industrial 318 V8, a manual 4+2 transmission, and 40K original miles. It's a grain truck with a 14' bed. The brakes will have to be modernized but, other than that, it's mechanically sound. With the exception of a little rust at the bottom of each door, he cab is perfect. I bought it from a farmer in Nebraska who's dad bought it new. It's been used at harvest each year, but that is all. It hasn't been pampered, but it has been taken care of. After cleaning it up, getting the brakes modernized and the rust fixed, I will build a log cabin camper on the back of it! After more than 40 years of being a "serious adult," the Old Hippie in me is coming out! What fun! The only thing I haven't figured out is how to change the gearing. It's a grain truck, for God's sake! it tops out at 50 mph in 4th gear high! Any thoughts on this? Will it be easier to rebuid the transmission with higher gears, or the diiferential? Your thoughts will be appreciated!
Got headers, I don't mind using the right tools for the right job. Never had an issue, 👍to each his own.... and I love crispy bacon.. and miller....and your show!!!
All the years I have been wrong thinking that style of pickup was from 48 to 54......I get smarter every week just by watching Mortske and Duff....The dog dish caps looks good on that style truck.
Cool ideas for you.. do the white steelies and chrome caps, the wide whites would set this thing off !!! Bring the grill back to chrome, the half moon chrome headlight covers and chrome headlight visors, and a factory exterior sun visor over the top of the windshield, and then “Mortske” on the tailgate in the classic chevy font style lettering !!! And don’t touch the starter !!! Lol… cool stuff dogg !!! You very much deserve it sir !!!
Sweet. Mortske Monday! #DadJoke My youngest daughter came running out of the bathroom yelling that the toilet was clogged. So I went to look and there was a wooden shoe in it. Bro. Watching that vette get dropped invoked murderous intent.
That's a fairly understated look for a 90's build. It won't be hard to get it back to the style you prefer. Considering the history of the truck and that you know who built it you would be crazy to pass on this opportunity. The later 50's Chevy pickups have been more popular but I prefer the look of those early 50's. The front end is so good looking!
I've been watching your channel for a few years now and don't comment that often but, I just had to today. Congratulations on getting a great deal on your uncle's truck. At the age of 57, I've. been around long enough to have my preferences in restoration styles and colors. If I had been restoring that truck I probably would have done it completely differently. That said, I think it was done perfectly! It is so original and has some much character. It's literally a turn-key show truck and it stands out in a crowd. It's such an original style and it comes with a story and history behind it. Certainly one of a kind. Enjoy every second of it, my friend. Oh, and thanks for all of your videos. I love this channel.
Mortske, add some brake fluid to your power steering fluid and that seal leak will go away. I had a 97 chevy the seal on steering box started leaking bad. It was using a tank of fluid in 15 miles. I added about 4 ozs of brake fluid to it and it swelled the seal back out and it quit leaking period. Stopped it cometely
Man I am almost certain I saw this truck at the Truck Gathering in Norman Oklahoma this past weekend. Very nice. I'm a big fan of the three window cabs too.
Surely a nice truck back into the family. After your thorough inspection, you found quite a bit of Gerry rigging, most likely from the original build! Watching you over the years I know you will fabricate or buy the proper equipment to make this truck the great dd/cruiser it can be. You and Puddin are two best fabricators I know that build anything!
Nice Duff!! Put a eyebrow cover on front windshield, more Crome,Crome toolbox ,Flowmasters ,4,Barrels carb,Mexican Blanket for Duff, air shocks on rear, floor shift,,I had a 51 3100,but I couldn’t get it off the farm after my Divorce, couldn’t get em all,but I tried,Ex wife parents farm🇺🇸Duff, don’t tie the not Duff!!
The chain is for torque. The idea was that when you mash the throttle the engine would twist and the chain is supposed to get tight and keep the engine from twisting so far and apply the torque to the frame. I don't think it ever worked but a lot of people did it back in the day.
Hey dare Mr. Mortske, with that rear-end caddy wumpus, it's probably "Dogg Trackin", but in yer case, it's "Duff Trackin". Yer new ride is a beauty, you have a lot of upgrades and repairs to get it ready for the trip to Iola Car Show 2023'. Thanks for the video, I watch them all. Be healthy and stay safe! Yer Wi. neighbor!
Dude, those bloopers were worth the 2hrs, alone!! And you did drop some great knowledge on things to look/look-out for when buying.. So many of those points are often overlooked because of excitement and not being able to see past the 'want'...
Hey Mr Morski it was nice seeing you here in Oklahoma I'm the one that yelled out Hoover schneef when you guys were talking about cocaine I was sitting on the electric scooter with the New York Yankees jacket on? It was nice to see you and pudding and slick 50 we're all there I wasn't expecting to see you but that was great always wanted to see you I was hoping you would have the Duff dog with you but you didn't.
Congratulations on the awesome buy 😁👍 Hope it becomes a T Shirt soon. My 9yo son says, " Thanks so much for making kids shirts AND hoodies"! His Chevy "Duff" hoodie is his favorite hoodie
Tom, On your lower radiator hose, that goop is dried anti-freeze that is most likely leaking from the weep hole on the water pump. So get ready for a new water pump.
That's so awesome. My grandfather built a 1940 Ford pickup back in the mid 90's that I would live to find. When he passed I was only 9 and it got sold to someone in Massachusetts.
The pre-purchase look over is SUPER important. My uncle used to run a shop here in the Twin Cities and I'd bring every car I test drove in there so I could get it up on the lift and inspect it. One time I was selling a car and the gal that was interested insisted that her mechanic look it over. Guess who her mechanic was. " Yeah, I know the place." :D And yes, we disclosed it.
Have fun with it Mr. M--just don't park it next to Mount Mortske, you'll never find it til spring!😆 Glad it's not for sale, keep it forever and I hope it brings you many smiles and fond memories every time you slide behind the wheel!
I love this truck!! It is gorgeous!! I'm surprised that you didn't use the large plastic leaf bag technique when you were painting the wheels at Puddin's house. It's a hell of a lot easier than trying to tape them! Love your channel!! Keep up the outstanding work!!
Mortske, you have a header hating kindred spirit at Nick's Garage in Canada. Nick never fails to point to headers' shortcomings including their interference with normal installation and maintenance! Nice ole Chevy you've got there! Congrats!
I had an Uncle in West Texas who had a small farm and he owned about 10 of these and I used to ride with him when I was about 15 or 16 . He would buy one and drive it until it needed a repair and then park it and buy another one. In 1977 I was in HS auto shop and our teacher was building one like yours. Here in Albuquerque these trucks are an iconic symbol of the culture for some reason.
Speaking on alignment tools, I think I'm the last mech in NC to bend I beams and radius arms in the old Fords with 5 & 10 ton porta power set ups.....70 was a great age to retire. When I started an alignment was $19.95. Sweet truck, man.
So I know time is money and you’ve been spending a considerable amount of time jacking up your vehicles to be able to put them on the lift, maybe try getting some 2x6 planks of wood to drive up on for better ground clearance. It may save on some of your valuable time and get the same result in the end. Keep up the awesome content
I had a 1950 GMC pickup at one time. It was all original and it was awesome! 235 straight 6, 4 speed trans. Compound low. The wipers were vacuum, but I put a mid 60s vw wiper motor in and it worked great! Of course, it was all 6-volt. 😁
Storage. That's my biggest issue. I pay for winter storage which is no biggie. But during the driving season my dentside sits out in the elements. Too tall to fit in my garage. I cringe because it's 99 percent rust free. But paint is bad due to it being from Nevada. My Mustang gets the garage through summer though. Great vid, especially loved the dialogue about buying a classic car and all that comes with it. I got lucky on both of my toys, I feel I got great deals when I bought them. Luckily before the market went nuts!
The round trip this ol girl has been through, shows once again, truly how small a world we do live in. It does my heart good to see her home where it should be. I need some 15 x 7 6 hole rally's, you have?
When you’re using the o ring on the drain plug, get one from the dealership, it’s $7-10 but they work tons better than a parts store drain plug o ring. I almost lost an engine because the drain plug o ring was leaking and it was brand new and torqued.
That's awesome, Mortske! I have a late uncle that was the same way for me. I'd love to have his old 33 Ford hotrod pickup. My cousin, his oldest daughter, has it, and she treats it like the treasure it is, so I can't complain.
Im glad that it was kept in the family. I just hate it when I see someone that wishes they would have bought someone's car to keep it in the family and they don't. Then after they track it down to buy it, its been all cut up and hacked and all the memories were just washed away. I know you will keep it for years to come.
HOLY CROW ! OVER 2 HRS. OF MORTSKE & SIR DUFF. Looks like Mortske blew the dust out of his wallet, maybe dug up some money in canning jars in his back yard ? & bought something FREAKIN NICE ? LETS GOOOOOOOOOO.
THAT is one nice pickup! Some new wheels & tires will set it off the way you like. With the background story on it, kind of a no Brainer, now it’s back in the family! Yah, there’s a few hidden glitches, but hey she’s a driver! Great everyday ride, thanks for the ride!
Nice purchase on the old truck. A 60 or 61 inch length replacement rear end would be a great improvement. Shaving half an inch off those lowering blocks might be a consideration in the same endeavor. I found some factory 16 inch steel wheels of the same bolt pattern to replace the 15's for my truck, (same 3:08 gears) which gave me a better ratio for cruising, better traction, clearance and mileage.
Great truck, brings back memories. I had two, a 49 & 51. My first vehicles I repaired. Had small trees growing inside the cab. I learned how to drive stick on them. Happy times.
Truck looked so good this weekend! Thanks for chattin a bit at the show! We ended up driving back to northern IL and canceling our flight back to look at a 69’ c10 in missouri 😂
I like your new pickumup truck. Overall a nicely done build. One that is comfortable and very drivable. The best kind. I am not the biggest fan of the weld wheels, so something different works for me. With the Camaro front end under it, your golden. I like your idea of the period digital gauge update. Maybe also add a modern replica style 50’s look steering wheel. I like the original dash trim, maybe get new shiny reproduction units or brighten up the ones in there now. Maybe add a couple of pieces of shinny grill back onto the front. I like your ideas for the looks changes under the hood. You’ve got a good score there for an in the family truck there.
I thought that’s what I saw behind you the other day! I started out driving a 47 Chevy panel truck. It was my dad’s. People would look up and seem surprised to see a young girl driving it. That was about 55 years ago.
hey Mortske: your enthusiasm for "Reg" is apparent. and I am happy for you. it's a nice rig. I know you'll tweak it to your best vision. as a canuck, i was wondering why you still had so much snow in ND. but to get to me "up" here. you would have to drive 50 miles south of Sioux Falls SD and turn left.. you northerners can keep the snow. we haven't had any in about a month now. love the content. keep us updated on the museums situation.
That pickup is perfect! “ Tasteful White” my favorite color. Done up well; not over done! I would love to own one like it. A super driver that you would not be embarrassed to take to a show. I learned to drive in my Dad’s ‘53 which was painted “ Pepsi Cola Blue”. I would build one ,but around here ( rust belt) a pile of rusty junk is $10k and you would need to put another $15K in it to get something as good as your’s. You are truly Blessed!
this video reminds me of an old led zepilin song. the name of that song was ramble on. holy crud buckets Vern.

@@MortskeRepair love to, unfortunately your gov still won't let purebloods in
The chain is for torque. The idea was that when you mash the throttle the engine would twist and the chain is supposed to get tight and keep the engine from twisting so far and apply the torque to the frame. I don't think it ever worked but a lot of people did it back in the day.
its for when the rubber fails on the mount the engine can't come loose and cause more damage
Yer Wi. neighbor!
Thanks
Nice meeting you as well!
Perfect summer crusier. Get out with the family and ride brother. 👍
Nice ride. With that paint job, I would've named it Casper. It's definitely the ghost truck. Enjoy!
Will do
Congratulations on the awesome buy 😁👍
Hope it becomes a T Shirt soon.
My 9yo son says, " Thanks so much for making kids shirts AND hoodies"!
His Chevy "Duff" hoodie is his favorite hoodie
Glad to hear it
@@MortskeRepair 😁👍
Those steelies with the caps look pretty good
Thanks!
Tom,
On your lower radiator hose, that goop is dried anti-freeze that is most likely leaking from the weep hole on the water pump. So get ready for a new water pump.
Good to know! Thanks John!
That's so awesome. My grandfather built a 1940 Ford pickup back in the mid 90's that I would live to find. When he passed I was only 9 and it got sold to someone in Massachusetts.
Good luck!
Nice. Hate shaved door handles myself
" Yeah, I know the place." :D
And yes, we disclosed it.
Good deal
Nice truck! Bring back all the chrome, will look even better
Thanks!
Sweet pickup, don't give up on the 61 bubble top... Your loyal friends and fans are eager for progress.....👍👍👍👍
Great old car buying advice. Learned most of that the hard way, but I could never rattle it all off coherently like that!
Congratulations on getting the truck. Thank you for another great video.
Thanks
Have fun with it Mr. M--just don't park it next to Mount Mortske, you'll never find it til spring!😆 Glad it's not for sale, keep it forever and I hope it brings you many smiles and fond memories every time you slide behind the wheel!
That’s the plan
Really smart and that interior, will this mean Duff has to have a bath every time he wants a ride in the hot rod? 🤣🤣
Nope
I love this truck!! It is gorgeous!! I'm surprised that you didn't use the large plastic leaf bag technique when you were painting the wheels at Puddin's house. It's a hell of a lot easier than trying to tape them! Love your channel!! Keep up the outstanding work!!
Congrats on the new truck man. That's super cool that it's a family Ride 👍
Thanks 👍
Mortske, you have a header hating kindred spirit at Nick's Garage in Canada. Nick never fails to point to headers' shortcomings including their interference with normal installation and maintenance! Nice ole Chevy you've got there! Congrats!
Great minds think alike!
cool beans thanks for looking out for puddin
Nice truck!!!! Steelies look great! Geez those lowering blocks were sketchy!!!!
Finally made it to the end. The tint plus the wheels plus the stance and the color makes that thing look really modern. Almost retro futuristic.
love how the video started with "finished car" to "gonna lose the shop". digging that humor. will make an awesome project for the channel!
Glad you liked it!
Love me some long tube headers. They got all the horse torks.
ewww
What a beauty Mortzke , there is nothing better having a nice cruiser . It couldn’t have gone to a better owner . Cheers 🇨🇦
Congrats on the purchase and recovering piece of family history.
Thank you!
Interesting
Speaking on alignment tools, I think I'm the last mech in NC to bend I beams and radius arms in the old Fords with 5 & 10 ton porta power set ups.....70 was a great age to retire. When I started an alignment was $19.95. Sweet truck, man.
Awesome
Words to live by. Buy once cry once. Nice truck
Thanks
Excellent attempt at making engineering principles understandable without the math.
Even I understood it
So I know time is money and you’ve been spending a considerable amount of time jacking up your vehicles to be able to put them on the lift, maybe try getting some 2x6 planks of wood to drive up on for better ground clearance. It may save on some of your valuable time and get the same result in the end. Keep up the awesome content
good idea
Glad to hear it
The round trip this ol girl has been through, shows once again, truly how small a world we do live in. It does my heart good to see her home where it should be. I need some 15 x 7 6 hole rally's, you have?
I don’t
When you’re using the o ring on the drain plug, get one from the dealership, it’s $7-10 but they work tons better than a parts store drain plug o ring. I almost lost an engine because the drain plug o ring was leaking and it was brand new and torqued.
Mortske...always learn all you can from us old guys, we've seen it and done it. Love the channel.
Much appreciated
That's awesome, Mortske! I have a late uncle that was the same way for me. I'd love to have his old 33 Ford hotrod pickup. My cousin, his oldest daughter, has it, and she treats it like the treasure it is, so I can't complain.
Nothing wrong with that!
Im glad that it was kept in the family. I just hate it when I see someone that wishes they would have bought someone's car to keep it in the family and they don't. Then after they track it down to buy it, its been all cut up and hacked and all the memories were just washed away. I know you will keep it for years to come.
So much good info. Well done!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Sweet truck, cool you're keeping it in the family
HOLY CROW !
OUr pleasure!
Nice rig man! Thanks for another Mortske Monday and thanks very much to the editing department 🐾🍺
Thanks!
Love the truck. I like your idea of chrome grill and bumpers. But it’s a nice truck and great history
Thanks!
Here is the one you teased us with!!!!! Good ......commence show!
I thought that’s what I saw behind you the other day! I started out driving a 47 Chevy panel truck. It was my dad’s. People would look up and seem surprised to see a young girl driving it. That was about 55 years ago.
Good times!
Washing the vehicle is the way to find everything very true statement sir
hey Mortske: your enthusiasm for "Reg" is apparent. and I am happy for you.
it's a nice rig.
Must be nice!
