  • Racing suffered an incredible loss in June with the death of the superstar racehorse and young sire Arrogate. As his first yearlings come to market, we reflect on his legacy with Juddmonte's Garrett O'Rourke and his jockey Mike Smith.
    Arrogate’s first book of 143 mares, a who’s who of some of the top breeding stock in the country, reflected the jaw-dropping career of North America’s richest racehorse. Dual Eclipse Champion Songbird (Medaglia d’Oro) was one of several champions sent to Arrogate during his first year at stud.

    Juddmonte Farm can easily be the reason why Arrogate died. Swelling of the upper region is rare and is most common after a misplaced, high IM injection. The middle region swells most commonly as a result of injection reaction. The lower region swells with spinal column injury, and any misplaced IV injection. Damage to the jugular vein can result in swelling here as can heart failure with blood backup into the jugular vein. Fractures and injury of the spine can be associated with swelling here too. Damage to the trachea allows air to escape and become trapped under the skin. This causes a specific type of crackly, soft swelling. Traumatic injury is possible in any region. This could be why they don’t want to tell us the reason of Arrogates death.

    This crushed me! They need full disclosure on what happened if it’s known. This is one of those times A.I. burns in my frontal lobe as long as genetics can be ruled out. Cloning has been a huge success in Quarter Horses by allowing performance horses longer careers therefore proving longevity in soundness. Arrowgate had an extended career, but WAY TOO MANY Thoroughbreds are RUSHED to the breeding shed before they’re even close to being fully mature. The industry needs CONSISTENT HEALTHIER and SOUND horses, not just more of the same. I believe it’s time to allow science to help take the lead. JMHO.

      In the last week of May 2020 Arrogate's stud schedule was suspended when he appeared to be suffering from soreness in his neck. He then fell in his stall, was unable to get back to his feet, and was sent for treatment at the Hagyard Clinic. After four days of tests and unsuccessful treatment, he was euthanized on June 2. A statement issued by Juddmonte said "His will to fight, so valuable to him on the racetrack, became a challenge in his care. When serious secondary health issues set in, the decision was made to put him to sleep

      No, cloning is the worst thing in my opinion and will never be allowed in the Thoroughbred breed. People already talk about it being inbred. Cloning would ensure it. The Jockey Club has already taken steps to phase in restrictions in the number of mares that can be bred in a season to a stallion to combat the inbreeding situation. I think that AI and cloning has ruined the QH breed. They are the most inbred breed of horses and produce the largest number of horses going to slaughter every year.

    • @k.wilki0392
      @k.wilki0392 4 года назад

      Suzanne Young You totally missed the REASONS I brought up! Too much of anything can be a bad thing! But I refuse to believe how having a horse like John Henry or Soi Phet who were gelded and held up to race for SO LONG aren’t valuable to the longevity of the breed! Yet, Big Brown is in the breeding shed and had NOTORIOUS bad feet! It’s inbred and weak because people are continually going to the SAME stallions that just win a few races and THEY ARE BREAKING DOWN!!!! Cloning isn’t the cause for the AQHA’s problems! Sadly, the versatility allows for just about anyone being able to find a use for them and the low price allows for many different types of people to own them; the good and the bad! I’m talking about using science to save the soundness and overall longevity of the Thoroughbred! Finding animals that are genetically sound and working them back into the gene pool for the good of the breed! I’m NOT talking about cloning Mr. Prospector 10,000 times, but why would you? Try finding something without him loaded in a pedigree. He was a helluva producer, but what if he died of something that proved genetic? That can happen just like what happened with Impressive.

    • @suzanneyoung8011
      @suzanneyoung8011 4 года назад +1

      @@k.wilki0392 I agree that the Thoroughbred needs to be genetically sounder and that can be done through outcrossing to other bloodlines and cutting down on the number of mares bred per year. Further scientific study is needed as well. However, any artificial means of breeding should not be done including cloning. Less inbreeding is better. Breeders must look for sound horses and breed to sound horses to make improvements.
      I hate what's happened to the quarter horse breed. I didn't say cloning was the problem, but it certainly hasn't helped. I don't like how they do embryo transfers on some mares where they produce three or four times the foals they would have in their natural lifetime.

    Everyone demanding answers when they anit even apart of the farm's team. Seriously, no damn vet wakes up today and says "I'm going to murder a multi million dollar champion horse" they'd lose their damn licence and be thrown into prison for it. Be grateful the TB industry even gives you answers to some horses' deaths, horses like Barbaro and Big Red and Eight Bells just to name a few. And to the IDIOT saying they can't say due to insurance reasons, you're full of shit. When Barbaro broke down, his owners still cashed in on the insurance they had invested on him but not only that, they used that money to try and save his life. Not every race horse's death is going to have answers handed over to you just because you DEMAND them. It's none of our damn business. We aren't the owners, caregivers, etc.
    And swelling in the neck isn't JUST caused by injections. Bug bites can cause massive swelling. Him going down in his stall and straining a muscle can cause swelling and yes, a strained muscle, can kill if not treated quickly enough. Constant coughing from 'choke' can cause swelling and can even cause life threatening infections. A kick to the neck can also cause swelling (and yes horses can cause self injury). So many net vets and not a lick of em have a degree.
