Between 1872 and 1884, the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière was built to honour the Virgin Mary for saving the city from invasion during the Franco-Prussian war. It has become one of Lyon's most recognizable icons, thanks in part to its commanding position atop a hill overlooking the city. It's one of the many examples of Christianity's long-term impact on the city.
Lyon's Funiculars (Funiculaires de Lyon) is a funicular railway network in Lyon, France. Only the two lines on the Fourvière hill are still operational, with the rest of the network either closed, converted to road vehicle use, or absorbed into the Lyon subway system.
