  • Here is a quick video of bunkai/oyo for Yansu kata. The bunkai, throughout, is based on being grabbed by an attacker, by either two or one hand. The audio is not too clear, and the editing is choppy, but I thought I'd upload anyway.

Sensei Russell,Thank you very much for your bunkai introduction. I watched your video over and over. I always discover something new in your kata bunkai. Its adventurous to know karate. Your clip is one of the best thing that started to teach me about how great the kata is.

One of my favorite kata, too - still refining the bunkai from when this was filmed (almost 3 years ago) Osu!

Is this Kyokushin? If not, what ryu (school) of karate is this from? The bunkai looks very similar to what I learned in Kyokushin.

This is Kenshikai Karate-do, an offshoot style with Kyokushin/Seido karate lineage.

Thanks, Bryan! I see things that I would tighten up a little, in a re-recording of this, but overall, it's how I see this kata's applications.

Good applications, different from the ones we see in kyokushin. It is good to also see other points of view, of course the kata has slight differences.

Alejandro: Thanks for your comments - these are just a few of the bunkai possibilities for this relatively rarely seem or analyzed (outside of Kyokushin and its derivative styles) kata. Osu!

For reference, here is my version of the kata, without the
