Tacoma 3rd Brake Light Leaking!

This video is just to inform Tacoma owners of a known issue with the 3rd brake light leaking. I hope others can catch it quicker than I did. I do not use the rear seat alot so I did not notice mine right away. It sucks that I have kept my truck like new and friends even comment that it is like new and still smells new. Then you notice a smell like water had been leaking in and it gets a musty smell even though you have worked hard to keep your truck like new. Well what really sucks is that Toyota has known about this for quite some time and apparently still don't know how to install a brake light correctly! Hope it helps and thanks for watching...

i was out of warranty and hit it with a bead of clear silicone. no issues and cant tell i did anything
brought mine in today, and found out that this is an issue. They are supposedly trying to push it under warranty, they had better considering its a known issue. =/

2017, mine recently started leaking, taking it in for the recall
I hope the new models are finally fixed from this mess. At least it is a recall now. It's such an amazing vehicle, so it's sad something so simple was overlooked when the rest of the truck it seems the quality is leaps and bounds above other manufacturers. This is the only issue on mine at all after almost 5 years and around 55k Miles. Other than Tires now and battery (because it did get slow turning over) the oil change and tire rotation is all that's been needed.
Got the recall euphemistically called CAMPAIGN SERVICE in the mail. If you have a camper shell and rails on the cab however, that has to be removed BEFORE TOYOTA will work on the fix. Toyota will charge a fee to get the camper shell removed by them and placed back on. For now I got that space in between the camper and the cab covered up to prevent a potential leak.
Many Toyota vehicles with this exposed type, set-in brake light has this leaking, sooner or later, even on 100 series Land Cruisers!! Normally can be fixed with marine epoxy, take the brake light off and seal around it with epoxy and put back on
4 years later wish I knew because as far as I can tell there's no warranty on this and it's quoted 750$, affordable but not cheap to fix
I was thinking they finally did a light recall on this eventually.

so what was the fix then? a new gasket installed by the dealer? my dealer refuses to acknowledge Toyota has an issue and is quoting me $600-800 to fix.. brutal Toyota
Yes, I was fortunate mine was under warranty! I thought I would post a quick video to help get the word out of the known issue. As far as I know they are not repairing free unless under warranty. I feel they should make it good! They surely know they are causing it!
It is just the gasket BTW, if Toyota won't make it right, I would just do it myself but I would try to put all the pressure I could on the dealership first!

I have a 2017 Tacoma and the dealership just told me $500 to replace the light. I'm not very happy.
You may already know this, but you can get an after market kit/gasket and replace yourself, and yes they should fix this free regardless....
Just had to take my 17 in yesterday for the exact same issue. All my straps and towels ruined.
Yeah, that sucks! I know things happen but when you find out Toyota knows it's a problem, I just can't figure out why it's not addressed! Should have been put to bed years ago...
Took mine in today. We had a few weeks of really hard rain everyday. I noticed it coming in from headliner area near the braie light.
Called nearest dealer earliest appointment I could make was today. They looked at it today. Said there some mildew under carpet. They are taking pictures and submitting. Apparently they will have to replace some some of the interior. Before they fix the leak.... So I drive around until with it leaking until it's approved to fix everything? Makes sense....

I am taking mine in just for this purpose tomorrow but its because I got the recall letter I am so lucky I didn't get the leaking

FYI Toyota knows about this issue, take it to the dealership. Toyota is replacing my seats, carpet and headliner.
As mentioned in the video, no doubt they knew about it. The hope was to get the knowledge to all owners out there to make them do just that.... Fix the issue as well as the carpet, seats and headliner. They would not do this last year, but should have been....

My 4dr 2017, back seat behind the driver, was soaked this morning. It feels like it's coming from the headliner above the seat. But this give me a chance to check the brake light seal. Did anybody have rusting issue or headliner issue afterwards?
