He uses his friend which now turned to lean and money as a parallel to how Cole doesn’t feel rap is going the right way - and it’s proven by all the rappers who ultimately got killed for their riches (e.g. Pop Smoke, XXX etc.). The whole song is full of subtle clues “we knew each other’s folks” = back in a time when there was room for both concscious and commercial rappers, before rap started to “have candy rims on spokes” ... what do you guys think?
