    Good idea to make this video. I've spent much time in the Caribbean and for sure, many people do not realize how much things cost there, especially in a place like the Caymans where there is practically no food production. In fact, no production of anything at all. Very good and informed video.

    Very good advice. You are a very honest and nice person. I have been to Cayman Islands several times, it is indeed very expensive. It’s safe and has beautiful beaches. But I am a city girl, I like the convenience of having a 24 hour CVS around the corner. If I need something, I can just walk there in three minutes. I have only stayed at seven miles beach so I don’t know about other areas. It’s definitely difficult to get something. It’s good to stay a week or two, but if I lived there year round, I would have to go back to New York City at least every six month.

    Hi Jazz, My wife and I are going to be coming down every four months, for a special shot she has to have. Her union in the States is paying for the flight and Resort, plus some money to spend, because the meds are so cheap down there! Our first time, was Nov 15th thru Nov 18th, and we had a good time, enjoying the weather. The price of food and drinks, did shock me, but we're only here for three full days, so let's splurge! I seen tour other video from last year about the free beach, but we will be staying at the Margaritaville Resort. We plan other things next time in March. We also get to use a CI cel phone while there. We're from N.East Ohio, close to Lake Erie.

    Enjoy your Cayman videos...I think I'd have to give up chips & soda for sure! We are stopping at the port in November and because of your helpful videos, we plan to spend the day at beautiful 7-mile beach & are very much looking forward to it. In your opinion, how would you rate the cost of a good meal at a restaurant beach? How is the weather mid November? Keep up the great videos. Hello from East Tennessee!

    • @JasmineDreams
      @JasmineDreams  5 лет назад +1

      Hello! And thanks for your comment! :) November should be lovely! We start getting what we call "Christmas breeze" around November, meaning the air starts to cool off a bit with the winter breezes blowing in, so it's much nicer weather to walk around and explore. The water will be a bit cooler, but could probably still seem warm compared to some of the lakes you might be used to in Tennessee lol.
      As for the food, it's usually very good and honestly I'd recommend it. Anytime I go somewhere new, I always like to try out the local cuisine and I always think it's worth the adventure just to try!
      If you're taking my "do 7 mile beach for free" tips, then you can always grab a take-out meal from the Caribbean Kitchen or somewhere local like that in town (Caribbean Kitchen is right across the street from the port - it's sort of attached to the museum. Ask anyone working at the port and they can point you towards it), and then catch a cab up to a beach access point. Those of us who live here often bring a bucket of KFC or some takeout food to the beach with us, rather than buying food at a beach bar. BUT if you do decide to buy food at the beach bar, you still won't regret it. They know what they're doing when it comes to food here!!
      As far as the beach bars go, Royal Palms is still my fav (if my videos don't make that obvious enough lol). I love the jerk chicken & mango salad there!
      Enjoy your trip planning, and let me know if you have any other questions :)

    It's expensive to live here. If you are comfortable where you are I would highly suggest to enjoy it and stay. Paradise is great, but everything is very, VERY expensive. 400 light bills, 200 water bill, rent for a room, not a studio, a room can cost you a thousand dollars, and if youre seeking a home prepare to pay 2500 and up depending on location. Food is literally, just a question mark. If you're going to eat you will spend money, especially if you love takeout. I'm in admin, and I literally will spend 1200 on food a month and not think a thing of it because it's just, normal... but hey, I'm a local so this has been like this all my life, but if you are thinking of moving here, please consider the cost of living. People have gotten stuck here because they legit cant afford to leave. ( oh and gas prices? Lmao you will cry your eyeballs out. Almost 5 dollars a gallon)

    About the same prices as in Belgium, but we pay +50% income tax on top of that. Cayman Islands looks perfect for the well to do online entrepreneur & investor, because the taxes on food & luxuries are a degressive tax while avoiding progressive income taxes.

    • @JasmineDreams
      @JasmineDreams  2 года назад

      Just be aware - this video was made a couple of years ago and the cost of living has increased a lot since then because of the pandemic. Groceries are at an all-time high. Many people are reporting their utility bills going up by hundreds of dollars per month even though they are reducing their usage. It’s kind of crazy right now.
      (And what you save on income tax is just built in to things you buy retail, since import taxes are most of what the island is relying on right now without tourism back to normal… so import duties are how the government there is getting most of its revenue, and the businesses that import products just pass that cost on to the end consumer)
      Edit to reply to his edit:
      The fact that this man is ok with degressive taxes (taxes that only affect the poor and not the rich) tells you exactly what kind of people are defending and arguing in favor of the way things are in Cayman. Just a pro tip for anyone reading these comments later on. If you’re an average person “degressive” taxes are not good for you… they’re only good for the wealthy and those types of taxes and tariffs are the reason why life is becoming so unaffordable for anyone in the middle class and below.
      Pretty soon, the 1% will come to cayman and have to make their own food and serve their own drinks, because these “degressive taxes” will price out all of the working-class people who make it such a fun place for the wealthy to live.
      They literally want modern-day slavery, and that’s exactly what minimum wage work in places like cayman is becoming specifically because of “degressive taxes” and other such policies that guys like this are so in favor of.
      Belgium has it right taxing the wealthy for up to 50% of their income, and Cayman should take note. This guy in his designer suit in his profile pic doesn’t seem to exactly be hurting because of it.

  • @diegomorales8616
    @diegomorales8616 4 года назад

    1. In addition to the transportation costs, I think the import tax is around 22%. And most everything is imported. Advocate for a repeal of the import tax.
    2. Ideally, there would be no minimum wage. The higher it is, the higher the unemployment. A minimum wage law doesn't require anyone to hire anyone. It forbids the employer from paying below a certain amount, which creates unemployment for teens, young adults, and people who are looking for their first job. Think about it. If the minimum wage magically creates prosperity by decree, then make the minimum wage $1,000 an hour. Right?

      I’ll be visiting later this year and will have to do a quick update video when I do. It’s been a popular request and prices have definitely gone up there too, from what my fam has said! Almost everything is imported, so it’s inevitable that whatever increases the mainland sees, the islands see that plus shipping & import fees. And that cascades to everything from rent to groceries to gas to movie tickets. I would never advise anyone to NOT experience living abroad but definitely research and be prepared for the cost of wherever you choose :)

    Also depends on how you want to live. We have a huge ex pat population from third world countries who manage to work and live and send money home to their families. So it can be done.

    • @JasmineDreams
      @JasmineDreams  3 года назад

      I wasn't trying to suggest that it can't be done, but it also needs to be noted that most of my expat friends there from India or the Philippines in those low-wage jobs do manage to send money home to their families, but they are also (in MANY cases) living with large amounts of people in tiny apartments, often without the landlord's knowledge or approval. I've seen up tot 13 people in a 2-bedroom unit in Cayman. I'm not saying this with judgement, I just think anyone thinking of moving needs to know the realities. I wouldn't want to lead someone to believe that they can have a nice big apartment to themselves on that kind of salary and be able to send money back home. It simply isn't realistic. So yes, it depends on how you want to live. But they need these facts in order to figure out what that reality might look like for them.

    As someone from Vancouver Canada I can absolutely guarantee there is no way in hell Cayman is 50% higher in real estate. The opposite is true. Plus Canada has tax on EVERYTHING. Be careful where you get your numbers. Plus you have to factor in wage rates. Being on an island is expensive but it's getting expensive all over because of inflation. Mainland USA is one of the cheaper places to live (and compare to)

    • @JasmineDreams
      @JasmineDreams  4 года назад

      Lol I have lived in the most expensive city in Ontario (Toronto, also Oakville and Burlington) and BC (Vancouver). And I never lived there long but I also spent some time in LA and NY. I’m fairly sure I have the perspective to share on this topic. Trust me when I say - what is said in the video is true. Based on the sources and based on my own experience as a middle class earner in all of these different cities.
      Cost of living (housing, goods, groceries, clothing, gas, etc) is much more expensive here in Grand Cayman. Feel free to look it up yourself. Cost of living is higher and majority of people are making wages much comparably lower than Canada (though some jobs in finance specifically may make more, that’s not the majority). The dollar is worth more, yes, but I pay for my groceries in Cayman dollars at the Cayman prices lol. If I could live here and make Cayman dollars but buy groceries and pay rent in US or in Canadian prices/dollars I’d be golden 😂 but that’s not the reality.
      I do appreciate your comment though. It’s easy when living in Vancouver to think it couldn’t possibly get more expensive than that 😂

  • @rantroom2023
    @rantroom2023 Год назад

    So as a Canadian I ask this question . With the increase cost of goods in Canada how would grocery prices compare now. Also is cost of living factored in with all levels of taxes that you have to pay in Canada ( Income sales and property)

    • @JasmineDreams
      @JasmineDreams  Год назад

      Any increases you see in Canada or the USA will be 2-3x worse in Cayman. The consumer not only has to pay those increased prices, but also the increased cost to import those goods that you’re paying for to the island, plus the cost of duties (import taxes). The grocery stores, restaurants, shops, etc. always pass those expensive fees on to the consumer by increasing prices to cover them. So, yes, if I did an update video on this topic now it would still be way more expensive than Canada is now.
      Your taxes in Canada also cover most health care needs (I am Canadian so I’m aware that it doesn’t cover everything, but it covers a lot). I paid less in taxes in Canada than I paid for health care in Cayman - same salary.
      People are always looking for loopholes in my videos on this topic but I’m really just trying to make y’all aware of the very expensive reality of life in Cayman. Believe me or not, whatever you want. Do with this information what you will 🤷🏽‍♀️

    • @rantroom2023
      @rantroom2023 Год назад

      Ok that is a good perspective. So basically what gives in on had gives and the other hand takes . Forgive me if it sounded like i was looking for a loophole. Just wondering if at the end of the year which country leaves you with more money . So I appreciate you replying . As you know lots of items in Canada have shot up in price due to carbon taxes. Everything in the supply chain has fallen victim to that . As per health care, Is i quicker to get an appointment than in Canada . I currently live on the other end of the Lake in Kingston where things like accommodations and car insurance are cheaper. I assume you are making price comparisons to the Toronto / Oakville areas.

      @JasmineDreams  4 года назад

      lol my monthly cost of insurance on the paycheck I was using as an example (and health insurance is a mandatory cost that almost all employers pass on to the employee in Cayman), and the cost of the insurance was almost exactly equal to what I was paying in income tax on each paycheck in Canada... only in Canada those paychecks added up to $60,000 CAD yearly, and in Cayman I was paying just as much on a paycheck that only added up to $20,000 yearly. (as a side-note, my out-of-pocket insurance costs were only about $14/month in Canada, so that's why I didn't bother to include that comparison, but there it is if you want it).
      You can feel free to check out other comment threads on this video for more on the income tax argument, but I stand firm on what I said in the video. Cayman is more expensive by far.

    problem with those percent based comparisons is that they are not helpful. i would rather to see average cost of expenses of say family of 4 (counting education, health care, rent, groceries and other required expenses). Because percent difference only good when you comparing lower end of payscale. If you talk about someone who makes 150k and pays 70k in taxes in Canada on that, then spending 20-30k extra on living expenses in Cayman islands and not paying income tax is becomming a very good deal.

      mbchudno I was sharing my own personal experience. I don’t have a family of 4 so I couldn’t begin to estimate what the average for that would be in other places. I’m sure you could take the costs of the basics and get an idea of how much more those basics are, and give yourself an average % you could expect your grocery bill to be increased in Cayman. Also, these prices change all of the time (usually going up) as shopping costs and duty costs change, so it’s just intended to illustrate that you need to expect your day-to-day expenses to be more in general.
      All these comments of people expecting me to do every single video in a way that is tailored specifically to them crack me up. I have a full time job and do this for fun lol. You’re welcome for the fact that I shared info that no other Cayman RUclipsd has bothered to. 😆

      mbchudno I will say, though, my aunt moved to Cayman with 2 children and complained every week about how much more things cost. My parents have a combined income of about 150k in Cayman and also complain about how much more things cost. I say this to all of the commenters who do mental gymnastics to try to convince themselves that living in Cayman will be cheaper - good luck. I hope it works out that way for you, but not a single person that I know would say that they found Cayman cost of living cheaper than wherever they came from. But they go there for other reasons, so they don’t care.

    That Numbeo chart of cost of living is definitely not very accurate. I have lived in and visited several countries. For one thing. Germany is much less expensive than USA and UK. iUK is much higher than USA. And Japan is much less than USA. South Korea is cheap too. The most expensive countries are Switzerland and Scandinavian countries. All Asian countries have very cheap places where less affluent people can buy necessities and save some money. So on surface they may look expensive but in reality it’s quite affordable if you don’t make minimum wage. The survey is done by local people entering data. And most poor people don’t have time to do it. So the data only show what non poor people entered. So in countries where the gap between the rich and the poor is huge, the data will be less accurate.

      A lot of the stores and restaurants do price things in US dollars, yes. Mostly because the majority of our visitors come from the US and it makes it convenient for them to not have to exchange their currency before visiting. Cayman does have its own dollar, but things still feel just as expensive when you pay in Cayman $$ lol.
      The cost being so high has mostly to do with the fact that most items have to be shipped to the island, and we don't have a giant population to enjoy the discounts countries/businesses can get when they buy in bulk... so as a result, things are very expensive. But that's the price you pay to be on a tiny island in the Caribbean!

      Average gas prices (adjusted to $USD for an apples-to-apples comparison) are around $3.79-ish/gallon in Chicago at this exact moment. It's $4.76/gallon in Cayman right now. The grocery markup is always similar to the gas markup, so I'll leave it at that. For further context, minimum wage in Chicago is $13.50-$14/hour (and $8.10 for tipped workers). Minimum wage in Cayman is $6/hour ($4.50 for tipped workers).
      If you're a high-paid financial advisor to the 1% (or some other such high earning position), you would probably feel like it's comparable to somewhere like Chicago, or maybe even more lucrative. But for the middle class and below, it's a struggle.

      Paul's comments above are not wrong. Service work here doesn't pay much (minimum wage is about $6/hour and employers are not willing to pay more if they don't have to). Bartenders do ok at popular spots, but only because of tips. Retail, food service, and any other entry level job is not worth it down here (in my opinion). Mangers, directors, and above make probably close to (and in some case above) US income rates. Especially in finance.

    And in America you pay 37% of your anual income in tax, right?

    • @JasmineDreams
      @JasmineDreams  4 года назад

      Marcos Ferreira
      wrong. The average American pays about 14% in taxes. I personally don’t agree with the American tax system, and I believe I was comparing to Canada in this video, for that reason.
      Now, Canadians pay more in tax (they average around 20%), but when you calculate what they save in health care expenses (in Cayman, it’s mandatory to have health care coverage from your employer, and then most employers force the employer to foot part of the bill out of their paychecks... and in my experience, those packages don’t cover everything and you still have out-of-pocket expenses at the doctor, hospital, and/or pharmacy), combined with the lower cost of living, and the strong Canadian labour laws that ensure regular raises to keep up with inflation, a Canadian in a comparable job would actually end up with more money left in their pocket at the end of the month. Even when you take into consideration Cayman’s high exchange rate! I’ve done this experiment before somewhere else in my comments section where I compared the same job in Canada vs Cayman, apples to apples.
      I love Cayman and don’t blame anyone for wanting to live here. I just think we can fight for certain improvements to make life better for the average person. Idk what’s so wrong with that.

    • @JasmineDreams
      @JasmineDreams  4 года назад +1

      Marcos Ferreira to give you some context - only people making 6 digits per year (over $100,000) would be taxed anywhere close to 37% lol. And they can afford it. Not to mention, there are these fun things called “tax write offs” that the wealthy (and many average folks) take advantage of, which allow them to pay significantly less tax. Sometimes no tax!
      My last year in Canada I earned over $60,000 for the year. I was in a tax bracket of something like 18% (though our taxes in Canada are on a graded system, which means some of my income was taxed less than that and some was taxed more. The idea is the more you make, the more you contribute), but because I planned for taxes, I was actually GIVEN BACK over $4,000 when I filed my taxes! So for me, it worked out to be like “forced savings” and when I had a life threatening allergic reaction, I was able to walk out of the hospital with my life saved and paid $0 out of pocket. The taxes I paid worked out to be far less than my hospital bill would have been, even here in Cayman where our hospitals are fairly inexpensive.
      Now, I’m not saying that we should implement tax in Cayman. But looking at how much money our government spends on other things, and being educated on how government finances work, I see lots of opportunities for changes that favour the average person.

    • @themarcos150591
      @themarcos150591 4 года назад

      @@JasmineDreams I should have mentioned I had rich people (which would pay something around 37%) in my mind while watching your video. In the comments I saw people mentioning America, that is why I compared to. If I had the money I would without second thoughts move to the Cayman Islands. I live in Ireland and income tax here is reaches 50% (on what you make above 45k/year). We do not have good health system, summing up, we don not take it back in service from the government, that is why I am keen on the Island you live.

    • @JasmineDreams
      @JasmineDreams  4 года назад +2

      Marcos Ferreira ah yes comparing it to the Irish system, I can see why you feel that way about taxes lol. I think places like Denmark are good examples. Canada is getting there.
      Also those rich Americans complaining about their 30+% tax rate are definitely not paying that much after write offs and loopholes lol.
      But I do have a problem with a government as corrupt as Cayman’s trying to start a tax system. It would end up just as pointless and expensive as Ireland’s lol. That’s why I say I don’t suggest it for Cayman. But I do still think we can work to make this little island even better 🙂
