  • I see comments about ads all the time. Wether it is about a video sponsor or RUclips ads, people don't it but they still want these free videos. How is this supposed to work?

I often get paid for my videos and the video itself and the links should be considered advertising!

Once upon a time website ads were a still image at the side of the page that you could click on if you were interested. Then they added animation. Then there was banner ads. Then big pop-up ads that you had to click away from. Then loud, flashy ads. Then ads that repeatedly interrupt. Then ads that take up more time than the video. Then ads that are for scams, or just downright abhorrent crap, or lies, or propaganda....etc. or ads that are drive-by malware. And it just gets worse and worse and worse.
Now, you can pay for no ads, but next week it'll be pay and you get some ads, but you can pay more for no ads....but we're gonna add ads to that too along with a higher, more expensive tier...and it just keeps getting worse.
Creators should get paid, but platforms broke their end of the deal. Ads should be unobtrusive, checked so they're not scams or worse and if you want a pay to opt out option, it should be fairly priced and actually remove ads, no extra tiers, no crap.
It's not the fault of creators, but the platforms trying to extract every last penny. If it weren't for their greed, we wouldn't even be having the conversation.

  • @entspec

There are so many moving parts to why this is the way people think. All I can say is that, as crazy as it sounds there are people who value what you do, but still don't think they should have to pay for it. It's similar to what the world is saying to musicians for 30 years now, which is some version of "your music isn't worth anything, but please keep making it, cause we wanna dance". You can replace music with pretty much anything creative or artistic. AI will likely make it even worse. This situation is but a symptom of a much larger problem.

I write books and make audiobooks of them for people with dyslexia, sight problems, whatever. I make no money from it. It annoys me that YT now puts ads in the middle of my videos. It spoils the experience for viewers. That means I get fewer viewers and wouldn't be able to monetize of I ever wanted to. I can't give my creations away because YT have decided to be more greedy. They used to put ads at the start and end - that was fine

I don't have any problems with the "sponsored by Ads" in the middle of a video or with youtube ads at the front and end, maybe one in the middle. But I came across videos that lasts maybe 10 minutes with up to five youtube ad breaks that lasted from 30 seconds to two minutes. That's what I would call unwatchable.

  • @ErickC
    @ErickC Месяц назад +1

Here's my take: I have absolutely no issue with content creators being directly sponsored, even if it means there is product placement in videos. That's just life. Most of the time, these sponsors are related to the things I actually enjoy, and most of the creators I follow vet their sponsors to an extent (unless they're taking money from BetterHelp). 90% of creators integrate their ads in a thoughtful way that doesn't disrupt the flow of the video or is at least amusing, so I don't even mind the product I don't care about most of the time. You want to run a "RAID: Bug Spray Lesions" ad? Cool. No complaint from me.
I think the Patreon or RUclips membership model is great and love it when the creators I follow are able to lean on those streams. I am not in a place, financially, to be a patron or RUclips member for most creators at the moment, but would be more than happy to contribute when I am more stable. I am also more than happy to click on affiliate links on the rare chance I want to buy something.
All of these things directly support the creators I enjoy.
I am much less happy to get blasted with 500dB of garbage generic oonts music advertising products I couldn't care less about, or, as happens much more frequently in my market every 2 years, BS rhetoric from far-right political candidates espousing the superiority of their master race over people who, like me, were born from the "wrong" breeding stock, and then the creators barely see a pittance of that revenue because 99.9999% of it goes to Taylor Swift, Mr. Beast, and the record labels that caused this music hellscape in the first place.
I'd consider premium, but then again, you run into the problem where you're supporting the big boys and hoping a tiny sliver of that income trickles down to the creators you actually care about. Even then, I think premium at least contributes to paying the bills at RUclips, who obviously need to keep their own lights on.
I'd much rather see creators build relationships with good brands and do product placement with them. I've been turned on to a lot of great products that way.

it has always been my understanding that youtube was a platform for people to display their videos, etc. Now it has evolved into a money making machine that is out of control. Yes, some videos have an excessive number of ads which make the video impossible to watch. My problem with ads is seeing the same ad 100 times and despite skpping it every time the algorithm still thinks I give a rats arese. I didn't want it the previous 100 times I want it even less now. Or ads that have zero relevance to the content of the video I am watching. I might be more interested if the ad was at least somewhat relevant to my interests but no matter how many times Raid Shadow Legends gets rammed down my throat I am not. In fact I am a spiteful little wanker that once an ad annoys me even if I were interested I won't use that brand, I'll find another.

@@milesjury49 I don't feel called out or dissed in any shape or form, so it indeed is a perception issue. I think you're feeling called out for it and since I don't know your personal situation, I won't judge about it.
Also I'm not feeling dissed either.
A lot of people here don't, which proves too, that it's based on a biased perception.
      Anyways, here are the facts:
He says some people want the videos without advertisements, which is a huge entitlement issue on side from these viewers.
Also there are 2 things to consider, that are known by every man:
      1. Advertisements on RUclips are neither new nor unusual. They are totally normal.
      2. Nothing in this world is really for free.
So what exactly is the problem with the points he's making here?
Which points he talked about don't make sense?
You mention some people are financially barely passing by, but then demand people work for less or no money, did I got that right?
      This confuses me a bit...
      What is your point exactly?
Does he have a lot of money? Maybe. You don't know, I don't know. The thing is:
      1. Does it matter?
      2. Who cares?
      3. If he does, maybe he wants to keep it that way?! Makes sense?
      4. It misses the point entirely, so it's redundant anyways...
What are you doing? Getting all mad about RUclips having ads? Him explaining the situation to people who dont know his situation or this platform?
The fact is: We are not gonna get anything from this discussion. Maybe now you understand the situation a little bit better, which is my goal here. Worst case: You're mad at me. Anyways, no hard feelings from me.

Some honest thoughts: Paying per channel is the same problem with streaming, in the beginning people were very eager to pay for content, no more pirating, it was awesome... And then all content was distributed on a billion different services and if you wanted it all, it cost a small fortune now.
Then there is RUclips premium, people also want RUclips to not get a penny from them because it's a somewhat corrupt company, I can't count the times RUclipsrs call RUclips an evil company that boycotts them.

I pay for RUclips Premium, so ads are not an issue for me. I don't have a problem with the concept of paying a creator 50 cents or a $1 per month for content that I REALLY like, but I would then seriously narrow down the number of channels I watch and therefore pay for. It would work as a filter for getting rid of channels that aren't providing content that people are willing to pay for. I think the bar goes up when you are paying each creator separately for the content - you are going to keep your list much more curated. So - I am down with the model but it will be MUCH more competitive for the creators.

Here is something weird. About a month ago Zzounds set up a 30 minute conference call to tell me that they’re basically making all my gear dreams come true. What I mean is they are providing all and any gear I want. And they really didn’t even care a whole lot if I mentioned them in the video it was extremely low-key so I’ve taken them up on that and I still work with a local music store but Zzounds is providing 75% of the gear I’m reviewing. If I like it I can keep it and get a 1099 for it. Which means in the US that value will look like income for tax purposes. It is a dream deal and I don’t know why they work with my tiny garbage channel but they do. So I don’t have to build any vendor relationships and they will connect me to prerelease stuff so I can do curtain up videos on release day like the big boys. Again I have no idea why my channel was picked. They work with others too and their affiliate fees are better than Sweetwater

People need to get paid for their work. I’ve been saved lots of money because of finding the right review for a product. There is a value in these things. I’m guessing the people complaining about ads are less likely to actually buy any or most of the products they look at reviews for. I’ve bought older gear on the used market because of some reviews I’ve seen. There is a level of trust with this. I tend to watch your reviews of relevant things for me and I watch Phil McKnight. I think a alot of people want back the time when there were no professional youtubers, but people just did reviews etc as a hobby. Not saying I agree as I like high quality videos, which require the maker to be a fulltime creator.

I love your channel, and be willing to pay for a subscription to continue to have great unbiased and honest reviews like you do. There's not so much around. When I want the truth, I always come to your channel if you made videos on it. Being able to be a paid member and have the opportunity to ask for some products or members only live sessions, well here's take my money.

I pay for youtube premium. Like others here I watch more RUclips than TV so that's why I pay for it. The people who scream paid shill at everything are generally inarticulate. What I think they are actually expressing is a real anxiety towards how content is often used to manipulate consumers and lord over them. I am old enough to remember when RUclips was people speaking into low-res webcams. There was something democratic and appealing about that format. I have a tremendous respect for channels like Henning's that give a shit about production and do very good production. Some audiences just get irritated by content creators who have a certain access/advantage/availability of gear and opportunities. It has a lot more to do with personality and messaging. I'm of the opinion that if you don't like a certain personality, just vote with your feet by not watching.

I understand the need to make money . Honestly the thing that bugs me the most is I will be listening to a RUclipsr and then all of a sudden they break into a marketing thing about Sweetwater. Honestly I have been doing everything I can not to buy from Sweetwater because they obviously have a hold on RUclipsrs. If they would a screen add in the corner of your video I would prefer it more. There is no need to have a RUclipsr stop mid subject to tell me about Sweetwater. Also when a RUclipsr does this action they look like a shill. The very thing you do not like people saying to you. - I am trying to be honest. Yes, I do understand you need revenue. I feel there can be a better way to improve the delivery of the ads.

There is a answer, and it will eventually occur when the clients realize their advertising dollars are being squandered, I know I don't mind watching guitar related ads on a guitar site. But you know the chances of targeted product is not possible because they want ALL of the money. Of course a better RUclips can't support everyone having a channel like they do now with "how to make a Greek Salad" with Ty-De-Bol ads thrown in every 5 minutes so the answer returns back to when the clients realize their advertising dollars are being squandered

Another thought struck me... The irony is not lost on me that a creator that makes content about the gear the musicians use to make the music that they get paid next to nothing for...is complaining about the expectation that the content should be free. I would guess that a significant percentage of your subscribers are musicians or have affiliation with creating music content, and they have the same expectation of your content that the consumers of their content have.

The answer is: run RUclips ads and ignore the bitching.
The platform allows watchers to comment. They bitch about the realities of the platform. They are entitled to bitch: the platform is bloody greedy. The average watcher might even contribute to some patreons, but few can reasonably afford to support all of the creators they would like to, especially as most creators don't want 50¢.They are mostly dependent on bigger contributions from a smaller, fanatical fan base.
And we're already paying the internet company or the phone company to get these amateur TV channels in a platform with more ads than old broadcast TV. So it's pretty annoying to have to subscribe to a bunch of different streaming services if you don't get a lot of usage from them
Should they bitch to the creators? Not much. Should the rant at the platform instead? I think so. But they get the chance to bitch at you, so they do.

I don't get it... People get content for free. They are able to pick the channels which they trust and like. Still people complain about sponsored content and affiliated links. It takes work and time to shoot these videos. It takes work and time to prepare for those videos. If you don't trust a content creator, if you get the feeling a creator is lying to you, simply stop watching the channel. Watching one of Hennings videos never made me think he isn't an honest person. Just go and check out the reviews of this midi-silicon-strings-practicing-guitar-thingy. I think it was called Aeroband MIDI Guitar. You don't have to agree with everything a content creator tells you. You may have your own opinion. I think there are some youtubers out there who won't review a product which totally sucks. Except they are allowed to say it in the video and tell their audience about how bad the product actually is. So go and look for the channels where you have trust in the creator and enjoy the content. But if you entertain yourself with content you get for free, allow the people creating that content to earn some bucks.

I would love it all free, no ads woohoo, thats not going to happen so I watch the ads (kind of) really I ignore them but the ad was displayed, great. Got to ignore the moans and bitching as the truth is those people have watched the video and the ads and you've got paid, they may bitch but they keep watching. If the content is great you can have more ads, that would work on this channel.

@@EytschPi42 cool, and i kind of took you as someone who wouldn't do that, which is why I was surprised my comments kept getting deleted (like 4 of them), as i think what i said was pretty innocuous; just that the majority of youtube users are still a bit "older", unlike its newer competitors, and that specific bracket of people yearn for a time past when it was "You"tube, not "corporate"tube, which is what it seems to be becoming to those people.
That bracket of people also tends to have more money now, which is why they watch "gear reviews".
So i think the divide comes from the fact that the general audience for this kind of content, though theoretically having the money to spend on gear beyond some basic setup, is used to a more "free" internet, and they (i say this because I'm one of them) know there's always going to be another up-and-coming guy with stars in his eyes looking to review products just for the sake of getting gear, so there's not much incentive to actually pay to watch these kinds of videos nor sit through more ads for them than one might feel like watching.
That environment wasn't created by the viewer, it's all YT/Alphabet's doing.
