Thank you Sir for the video, and to the commenters for adding their experience.
With this video I was able to repair my
Weller WPA2. It too had the excessive flow problem. Adjusting back a tooth or two on the flow knob works!
    Much appreciated 🎉

It was not entirely clear what was going on here and what the problem and cure was. As other comments below, my soldering iron was not burning properly with the spurting noise and then going out that is referred to. The vid was helpfull in that it suggested a problem could be cured so thankyou for that it did help me. For others who have searched for how to repair Weller iron; I had long suspected that the problem was excessive gas flow giving a mixture that was too rich to burn. what I found is that the gas control consists of two parts the on / off is effected by the grey controll disc operating on a cam which pulls the central part out to turn the gas on. The gas flow is set by rotating the brass splined part. So if the gas flow is too great maybe becase the control valve has worn, then this can be corrected by moving the plastic disc to another spline. I put the rubber hose into a water and adjusted the spline until there was a very low flow of gas bubbles and then re asssebled with the control disc at the minumum No.1 position. I think this is what the vid is showing but hope the above will help anyone else. I am very pleased to have it back working again.

Why is it such a nightmare to contact Weller/Cooper Tools?
Does anyone know if it is possible to get a piezo pyropen serviced by them?

I did this Weller /cooper tools service with 3 pyropens.
They all worked fine for about 3-6months. $200 not well spent.

Is this repair you carried out, remove the problem of the iron "spluttering" when you hold it upside down, when doing hot-air component removal?
    Or was it another fault?
I'd be greatful if you could let me know, as mine is now driving me nuts!
    Thank you.
