I have suffered from mental health issues my entire adult life, depression, anxiety and so on. I camp with friends sometimes, but I also make sure I go away alone at least once a month. Sometimes I can spend an entire weekend just doing absolutely nothing but tuning into my surroundings, listening and watching and processing thoughts, probably partially subconsciously. No responsibilities except gathering wood for the evening. Being left alone, in the woods, has saved my life.
Always loved camping but increasingly intolerant of having other campers nearby as I get older I've had enough of hearing people in neighbouring tents getting drunk/arguing/shagging/having boring conversations about washing up or being woken by their babies/children at dawn! Wild camping takes you back to the peace and simplicity of natural surroundings
Totally agree , campsites you get folk keeping you up into the early hours with noise, then always folk on the go at the crack of dawn waking you up again
For me, wild camping is about freedom, simplicity and adventure. Being able to pitch up as and where suits is a great feeling. I cycled home from Spain to the UK last year and wild camped all the way using either a tent or a bivvy bag if I needed to be extra stealthy. Experienced my first barn camp too! Joe. UK.
I finally did my first solo just a few weeks ago in one of my favourite hiking spots after watching all my favourite RUclipsrs over the years and without sounding too dramatic,it almost felt spiritual🙏🏼 Roll on the next one🏕
When I realised how disastrous married life was I bought a tent to escape, downside is my wife ran off with my best friend! To this day I still really miss him! Cheers Mark!
Unfortunately for me now, it's a dream(disabled. Unable to walk more then a few yards, bend down, need CPAP at night, etc, etc). BUT I LOVE camping and especially wild camping. I watch channels like yours to remember what it was like. The solitude/peace of it.
The pre-cooked sachets like Wayfarer are much nicer to eat than the dehydrated stuff. Wild camping is ultimate chill and escape into nature. Camping is appealing because it satisfies two primeval needs; building a den and being close to the ground. I occasionally camp at proper sites with a monstrous big air beam tent, and that's a social thing, but going out on your own is sometimes more fulfilling and definitely more relaxing.
Great video Ben. Now you have one of those tents, I must be the only person left to get one! I realised the first time I wild camped that I’d never actually seen the sun rise in the morning. Watching that and listening to nature waking up was a special experience.

All in, £147 seems a bit of a bargain for a tent that seems to be pretty much universally approved amongst the Wild Camping Fraternity.
Did you put the tent in the dry bag at the end? Sweet idea for space saving! How much water do you bring on such trips? I'm about to start camping in the wild more often, but I'm always a bit anxious about the amount of water I need for cooking and drinking. At home I drink 2-3 litres per day, but if you put that amount in bottles, that's a lot of space taken. Bladder helps a bit tho. How big is your backpack?
Yes, I always pack my tents into a dry bag and keep the poles and pegs separate. I take 2 litres of 'liquid' per night (including drinks). All depends if my food needs any and what I'm drinking. You'll get a feel for it over time but you'll always need more than you think. Take extra and carry a filter. I usually use a 48 litre pack. Check out my packing video to see how I fit everything in.

Why I am doing wild camping? I am a geographer and carry about 10+ kg of my work-related equipment, a total of 25+ kg, so when I am climbing in the Alps the reasonable decision is to do multi-day trips to spare energy climbing up and get more time to explore the area after setting up the base camp. Secondly... there is no super luxurious hotel to offer me the peace starring the milliards of the stars and being connected with nature within a kilometers radius of no people around. Regards from the Sunny Side of the Alps ;)

Ah the trusty Cloud Peak 2, such a great tent but mine is the older design. My zip is definitely better than yours! 😂🤣😂 Maybe I’ll save my answer for why I wild camp until we speak! 🤔😂
Odd they changed it, I think they made the door worse. Flaps on the floor and gets dirty. I take 2 cloths pegs which are quick to roll and hold it in place instead of fiddling each time with the tie backs.
The door zips of the first version of CU2 had a T joint and insects, especially ants had a highway indoors if not additionally protected with the tape, so the new version suits me better at least to me. The new version is with the strengthened joints where the cors are attached. But the zippers are not anymore YKK unfortunately.
I get asked by my mates all the time why I do it . I just say to get away from you lot . I just love the pure silence and views and just clearing the head
Tough one. Depends on budget and size requirements I guess. CU is cheaper and bigger. Helm 1 is probably a warmer tent for colder weather, lighter and smaller pack size.
Helm C1 is one person tent flysheet that is polyester and 2 Kg, Cloud Peak 2 is a two-person tent of 2.5 kg and the flysheet is nylon. My experience is that for someone with a rucksack the 1P tents are too small when rainy or very humid. Both tents are designed to resist wind but Cloud Peak is with better design - one additional pole and the ventilation system is very good. Price is there-there ~ same. However not considering the price I would suggest Cloud Peak 2, it is a very optimal tent. I used to use expensive tents but I found that even the most expensive ones do not resist the "animal impact" ... it happened that when I returned to my base camp in the Alps the 800€ tent was ripped by marmots... since then I use "optimal" tents... quality ones but not with "big brand name" - nobody cares what brand the tent when someone is somewhere "wild". At the moment I use Naturehike Cloud Peak 2, but the previous one was Zajo Litio 2 which is an even more optimal tent and tested on several mountains through hikes, like GR20 et. c..., I am getting Zajo Litio 1 which is a 1P tent but very good space inside even for me 185 cm high and full packed Osprey 65 AG... price... ~ 100 € but competitive with tents of e.g the USA big names with prices of 500€.
Is wild camping getting more popular, or are more people sharing their wild camps? It seems to be a more acceptable way of spending time. Not sure I could cope with those flies. We don't seem to get as many here in South Wales.
Interesting question, 'why people wild camp?' I think there are many sub-categories to the community: gear headz, multi-day hikers, bush crafters, over nighters and not forgetting... the zip fetishists 🤣
I can understand wild camping having done plenty of it in my younger days. However, some people posting videos on here seem to actively dislike the very thing they are doing. One poster (who I shall not name) posts a lot of wild camping in the UK from roundabouts. He camps in some revolting places full of rubbish and abandoned kit. He then spends the whole period absolutely crapping himself, jumping at every sound and seems very keen to leave as soon as he can. So constant fear, rubbish camp locations and noisy areas with no redeeming features. Now this I cannot understand. He is clearly only doing this in order to make videos for RUclips. I doubt he would put himself through this for the sake of doing it if not filming. That to me is disingenuous. I used to wild camp in areas with a lovely view etc.
I'm not being pedantic, but ...... You're complaining about non-recyclable food packaging, sat outside a non-recyclable tent, wearing non-recyclable clothing, sleeping in a non-recyclable bag on a non-recyclable mat, whilst filming it all on a non-recyclable camera & uploading it to a non-recyclable computer in a non-recyclable house. Green credentials?
@@daleyoutdoors Fair point, but you 'will' reach 'the' point where these items wear out, break down, or become obsolete ....... 'then' throw them away. Denying a certain inevitability. It's almost impossible to avoid using non-recyclable stuff, is my point, & so to choose to recycle one thing & not another is obviously a contradiction you're allowing through your thoughts of what represents being "green" or "eco-friendly" etc. I'm certainly guilty of selective morality myself.

This was my first camp in it and I only opened the one door. I’ll check next week when I’m out again 👍
@@daleyoutdoors cheers strangely mine only has one!
What is your pack weight here? Thanks.
Not sure. It was 5 months ago and I don’t have a record of it.
Those flies looked to be a pain in the ****
Noticed you stopped talking about the midges once the Smidge was applied
It seemed to do the job
I get asked by my mates all the time why I do it . I just say to get away from you lot . I just love the pure silence and views and just clearing the head
Would you recommend the cloud peak 2 over the helm compact 1.
Is the bag in the tree just in case of bears 🐻 😝……good content as always! 👍👍
Rubbish bag was video-bombing me 😆
No bears in the UK 😂
Is wild camping getting more popular, or are more people sharing their wild camps? It seems to be a more acceptable way of spending time. Not sure I could cope with those flies. We don't seem to get as many here in South Wales.
Hard to say as I'm still a 'newbie' really - only 2.5 years in. It seems there's been a drop in people sharing on YT recently though.
Great video mate
How much camping / bushcraft gear have you got!? I can imagine you have a very full garage or spare bedroom... :)
Too much 🤣 I’ve just had a big clear out so I’m down to 4 storage boxes, 4 rucksacks and 3 tents (or 1 tent if the mrs asks)
@@daleyoutdoors Haha! just don't let the Mrs see your future videos or she might spot all the different tents that appear!
@@WingingItBoatingonaBudget I ‘borrow’ those 😉
@@daleyoutdoors Genius! 🤣🤣🤣
great vid ben
Cheers Shaine 👍
Interesting question, 'why people wild camp?' I think there are many sub-categories to the community: gear headz, multi-day hikers, bush crafters, over nighters and not forgetting... the zip fetishists 🤣
🤣
Why do YOU wild camp? 🤔 And if you don’t… why not!? 😆
Not telling. 😎
I think you and the other Ben should do a podcast not just on camping
I’ve no idea what else we’d talk about 😆
Have you ever had any weird or creepy happen whilst wild camping?
Not yet 🤞
Just you, alone with your thoughts and a crap ton of flies. I don't know if I could have taken that.
"Why a grown man would want to walk out into the middle of nowhere and spend the night in a plastic bag."
Some folk would pay a fortune for that 🤣😉
Plenty do! 😆

New sub Liked 🚀👍😀🙏
Thanks for watching :)
Lol
Ah yes, the question I keep getting from my girlfriend!
To get the fck away from people that don t go camping 🤣😂😃😂🤣
🤣
Agreed. I thin it has to be enjoyable, otherwise why bother? The area/place you're in has a big impact on how good the camp is.
I don’t plan on throwing any of the things you’ve mentioned away?
@@daleyoutdoors Fair point, but you 'will' reach 'the' point where these items wear out, break down, or become obsolete ....... 'then' throw them away. Denying a certain inevitability.
It's almost impossible to avoid using non-recyclable stuff, is my point, & so to choose to recycle one thing & not another is obviously a contradiction you're allowing through your thoughts of what represents being "green" or "eco-friendly" etc.
I'm certainly guilty of selective morality myself.
@@daleyoutdoors Subscribed btw, because it is a great video imo.
@@markatchison9974 My point was single use food packaging is a no-go for me. Hardly a fair comparison against anything you listed.
@@daleyoutdoors What meals do you use now?
Some of the Naturehike stuff looks ok- but given they rip off other peoples designs and are made in China - I avoid them
All these wild camping videos just consist of people eating!!!
You forgot drinking beer.
