Im rebuilding a crash damaged C63 AMG. Theres damage to the car all over but the worst part is definitely the front end. I need to drop and replace the subframe to replace 2 parts of the engine sump & whilst the subframe is down i thought it would be a good opportunity to do the exhaust headers and down pipes.

What I love about this channel and the builds is. You don’t spare any expense. Whatever’s happened to the car you get quality replacements and then modify it properly. Other Channels bodge
Mat, tiny tip for the future; once you have applied the sealant on the sump, just finger-tight the bolts first and leave them there for a minute or two until the sealant becomes sticky, when you continue to torque the bolts the sealant isn't pushed out that much and creates a perfect seal.

Don't want to tell you how to suck eggs but when un bolting if it gets tight or very easy, it's a good idea to spray some Wd40 and re tighten. Do this a few times in and out, it helps prevent them shearing off.
I've worked many years as turbocharger service engineer and had to unbolt turbo's when the ship comes in port while they off load and the turbocharger been running at 600°c exhaust side. High tensile bolts and high temperatures are not a good mix haha When it all goes wrong you need Colbolt drills to drill them out if your lucky.

Hey Mat! Had an idea, what about getting a decibel meter and having a chart going? The volume of the exhaust doesn't translate too good through the camera so it'd show us all how loud these things are!

I have an 2008 C300 and I've enjoyed watching the teardown on this C63 series and understanding the steps and explanation of the teardown.
That exhaust is absolutely brutal. Can't wait to hear it on full send.
Hi Mat, Just a few pointers from a guy that has owned his from new in 2013 and know all all the issues/best mods etc.
- Firstly you will need a map as I see your headers didn’t have cats, the best guys to use is MSL in Birmingham and they can do it remotely if you live far from them. A map with headers will gain around 530-550bhp on the headers you have.
- Don’t change any more of the exhaust or you will loose the AMG sound, removing the resonator or changing the rear of the exhaust makes them not sound like an C63 anymore. Keep your set up as it is.
- Best Oil to use is Shell Helix Ultra and make sure its 5w40
- Change the engine mounts and trans mount while your under there as they go even at low milage.
- If the engine sounds very tappy after its fully warm/driven you will need to change the buckets and its best to do the cam adjusters too (Just the plates should be fine)
- All the 19” optional wheels crack which yours have been welded, only a very few people seem to get away with no cracks which mine have none but I have BBS wheels now anyway.
- Headbolts you won’t have an issue with as you have the facelift.
- Check the upper pan/engine block as these cars are getting older the upper part of the engine can seep oil or you will see its abit damp so monitor it. If it gets worse its an engine out job just to pull the engine apart to redo do the sealent round the block.
- Best to change all the injectors as a few people have had failures and as yours has been sat a while will be an issue. They are not that expensive anyway.
- Front arms can go on these and its only a C63 item as they are pretty thick (I think its the lower but best to get new items instead of used)
- All valve covers end up leaking which is normally hairline cracks at the back so you cannot see them, Best to buy two new ones with gaskets.
- Change all the front pulleys and belt as at this age they are failing and when they go they will take out other things around the engine.
- Rad pack and parts etc Ebay isn’t going to bring up much and your going to have to phone scap yards if your not buying new. I know there is quite a few Manchester way that stock cars like these for parts.

Last time i done an exhaust job on a keeper i replaced the steel exhaust nuts with bronze nuts, never had trouble with them seizing again.... take care you two.
good video, but does Mat ever use a torque wrench? I don't always use one because when you fix old cars the original torque specs sometimes don't work correctly, but when installing the oil pans and exhaust manifold I would definitely torque it to specs. Also did he ever install the o2 sensors he couldn't get off. If he doesn't I'm assuming the car will run in some preset o2 mixture and won't run to the best of it's abilities. I didn't even see anyplace to put the o2 sensors on the new exhaust(maybe I missed them) It seems as though he might have an exhaust leak from the backfiring or maybe the new exhaust is designed to enable backfiring?

I know this is old, but a top tip for anyone tryinging to extract sketchy bolts is to obviously soak them with penatrent, but most importantly try and tighten them SLIGHTLY straight off FIRST. Do not start by trying to loosen them. The torque of tigentening them FIRST will help crack the bond of the corrosion. Then you can start to loosen them BUT only slightly. Go back and forth. Tighten...loosen...tighten...loosen. Slow and steady, you know, like with a new girlfriend. If you bang straight off just trying to remove the bolt, the corrosion crud will get jammed up in the threads and contribuite to the difficulty of removing the fastener. Also if you need to use heat, take some parrifin wax(candle) and melt that on the nut threads. This will work to suck the wax into the threads. Works like magic.

I'm only just past nottingham, I've got a 2011 had it just over 5 years. It's been a bloody good car, except for the expensive tax, fuel and tyres. It's been amazingly reliable, been to South Germany, the nurburgring, road trip in Wales and done the NC500. Best car I've had for reliability so far don't under estimate them!
I have Becker long tubes on my 09’ C63. Savage sound and still VERY streetable with the stock center resonator (which is an H pipe) & stock mufflers.

Mate you can buy some nice twist sockets for rusted bolts, we use them all the time for rusted/rounded bolts also you can get some proper lamba probe sockets which work a treat!

You're lucky when I did longtubes on my S4 I definitely snapped a couple bolts. The sound was unrivaled though and gained so much low end torque.

Matt, using the silicon sealer, you make the same mistake as the majority of users, Ideally it should be applied and leveled to make a consistent bead uniform in size, then (IMPORTANT it should be left for 10-15mins to start to go rubbery) then you can assembled ok,
Doing it wet just spreads it into the engine, and lumps of silicone in the oil can block oil lines.
The list of cars you've had and fixed are just insane! Slowly becoming a master tech 🤪
You should get the electrical tool what has an heating element heats up and makes the bolts glow making it easier to get off 👍
Best sounding stock exhaust is LFA hands down. Although, the C63 is so special! I'm in love with it!

If it's making noise on startup and you're looking to replace the cam adjusters there's a canadian company that makes just the inner plates and pins for a good price, stronger than factory too.

It sounds like, unless you let it run a while before starting it on the video that it has had a cold start delete on it. Wait for a real cold start and run for cover 😂. If it has had a delete, then it’s likely been remapped too. With the headers, you’ll need a remap anyway and an EML delete.
Also, the secondary silencer that you removed are actually two catalysts, so the car is catless now. Just FYI come MOT time.
While you’re messing about, may as well supercharge it 😉. If you need any tips, I’ve pretty much ripped mine apart, built it back up and supercharged it so there not a lot I haven’t come across. Headers were the worst mind, and you aced that!

Little trick hit the bolts with wd40 and undo and tighten and undo and tighten them with a rachet and it will come out better. Can even use a heat blower to expand the metal
