Children are running wild in the mud, climbing high into trees and playing with knives, but no one is telling them off. We are looking at life in kindergarten… Danish-style.
If you’re the kind of parent who keeps a close eye on your kids in the playground, Denmark’s forest kindergarten will come as a rude shock - they do things differently here. Johan says he’s watching from a distance. So what happens if he thinks the children are doing something dangerous? “I sometimes close my eyes, because I know I have to stop something, but I can also stand and watch it a little bit first because I think it’s exciting. And I can understand why they do it,” he says.
Whether he’s throwing rocks into the fjord with a bunch of enthusiastic three year-olds, or abseiling down a muddy slope with some determined five year-olds, Johan clearly gets a vicarious buzz from their juvenile thrill-seeking. “It’s not dangerous in my opinion. And if you don’t get a little bit of danger, what’s life worth living? Everybody needs a little bit of kick sometimes.”
At the heart of what makes Danish kindergartens so special is one word - pedagogy. In Denmark, and in many other parts of Europe, ‘pedagogy’ is an everyday word for something that’s much more holistic than ‘teaching’. It’s something that applies from cradle-to-grave - anyone in Denmark working with young children, or the mentally ill, or the elderly, requires a university degree in pedagogy.

Brandon Tran it was too short to be a spear, and also he wasnt using the knife as the spear point but he was just sharpening a stick into a point. So in that case the knife is still used as a tool and not a weapon
tr3nta Someone should make a skit about something like this. Have 2 adults having a conversation about a knife being a tool, so kids can play work with them. The kids would be in the background fletching bows and other weapons and using them at each other, while the adults are lost in conversation. Also, yes knifes are tools. I never said they were weapons, but my previous comment could be misleading depending on how it's read.
+Brandon Tran I find it interesting that you consider a pointy stick a spear. Your comment also makes me think you consider a spear a weapon first. Why not a tool for hunting/fishing? I'm guessing that's what most spears are used for nowadays. Quick question. Did you grow-up in the city, suburbs, a small town or the sticks?
I was in a forest kindergarten (or nature kindergarten) and we would also make these pointy sticks, not as a weapon, but because they were so easy to make

First of all they are not playing with knives at all.
Second of all they are learning basic life skills, something missing in the world today.
They are exposed to the nature, not to a world of electricity.
They learn to depend of themselves and each other.
How could anyone not commend this, should they play with tablets to learn this.

yesterday i took my 2 yr old girl for walk in the wet muddy woods near the river to throw sticks in it and she loves it. and was very relaxed when we got homw

Not being smothered or sheltered from the real world does wonders for a kid and helps them to get a healthy mindset that will benefit them throughout life... something they'll pass on to their kids, or, your grandkids.
With 40 years of experience working with children 1st - 12th grades, special needs children most of the time I whole heartily subscribe to the outdoor kindergarten experience. Children learn more when they are moving and exploring then when they sit quietly facing forward with their hands on their desks.
As an IT professional with 25 years indoor experience i say that adults learn more when they are moving and walking outside at least 2 hours a day.
Wow I am very impressed, would have loved this as a Kid...Scandinavia is so far ahead of the World. They have very good ethics in Criminal Justice too!

Maybe they should teach the Scot's that as well. The Northern half of Scotland was raided then settled by the Viking who steadily drove south until the Scot's King signed over the northern half of Scotland to the Norwegian King in 1098, recognising a fact over 200 years old. That portion of Scotland along with Norway was united with Denmark in 1282 and the Danish King Christian I sold ot back to Scotland around 1474.

I didn't go to a forest kindergarten, but did the exact same things in a regular danish kindergarten. aswell as in the first grades of primary school. Being trusted, and having the ability (being allowed) to learn from your own mistakes good or bad as a child, is one of the most important lessons in life imo.
Exactly. I went to a normal Danish kindergarten, but we stayed in the playground in all sorts of weather. I recognize the broken bones and the scratches, but we survived it and it gave us an opportunity to explore. If something resulted in a scraping the first time, we found another way to do it the next time. Sometimes that would result in a bruise, and then we tried a third method - sometimes it worked fine, the second time and we gained a new skill.
yeah i've had knives since i was 4 and yeah i cut myself but i learned and now i rarely cut myself
and our parents didn't get mad and sue the kindergarten if we got hurt and take of to a new kindergarten :D
I'm Danish, and I laughed so much. It's "only" 5 degrees. To survive being cold and wet. In my kindergarten we were almost in the Forrest everyday. And that tree wasn't even that high.

... Its not. That environment while giving unique possibilities also has severe shortcomings. More or less nothing they learn there actually prepares them for the life they are most likely going to have when growing up when their problems are not going to revolve around how to widdle a marshmallow grilling stick but paying your mortgage.

Recently my old elementary school just replaced all the grass in the kindergarten yard with plastic fake grass and the yard is smaller then my houses backyard the school has over 100 kindergartens. So ya rely different then Denmark kindergartens.
That is really neat. I wish I could have attended one :D Schools should teach more real life skills, such as cooking, especially since parents suck now days.

+FloppY That's good. I seen a video recently where they presented basic veggies/fruit to American elementary children and asked them to identify them. They failed horribly. No wonder Americans eat so much fast food. Schools should provide some real life skills instead of drilling random facts into thier heads that more often than not never come up in real life.

Yeah, it all makes sense, the Danes are very relaxed and conscious of limits. Been there three times and loved the country and the people. They go to school right up until they're 19, so they're very highly educated and sophisticated, and at least bilingual if not multi-lingual. They place a lot of value on family and friends. We could learn a lot from the Danes and not just about forest kindergartens.

i'm from Denmark and went to one of these Kindergartens as well, absolutely loved it! The pedaogouges generally trusted the kids and I think that by showing the kids this kind of trust, the kids in return would learn and respect the rules and limitations set by the kindergarten. My mom later told me that the leader of my Kindergartens would tell parents that "you couldn't complete childhood without bruises and a broken bone". I agree to this day. You learn a lot by mistakes, but first you should be allowed to make those mistakes and succes also feels a lot better if you have experienced failure, sadly many kids don't experience that today imo.
I'd send my son to this if we had one in Ottawa. I grew up in the countryside so I pretty much had an "outdoor" education from a young age. I'm average height and size. . but when I was young I was stronger than all the town kids. We didn't have a TV either. . so we were always outside in all weather.
I live in Ottawa and if you climbed a tree at school today you would get suspended.
I remember when I went to kindergarten here in Denmark it was also a forest kindergarten. Where we learned how to carve with knives the right way and the save way we learned how to make all sorts of things like figures bows and arrows and also we learn about the nature and different plants and animals, what plants and leaves you can eat and how to track some animals. It's so amazing to go to a forest kindergarten
this sounds like such an amazing way for a child to learn- they will definitely learn to appreciate nature more. I would love to send my kids to this when I get older.
In my school I also 'played' with knives. If you are not allowed to ever use them you'll never learn how to be careful and how to use them for the right use

The difference is the amount of time the kids spends outside. The forest kindergarten is almost exclusively outside, in any weather, where the traditional kindergarten is more inside in comparison.

As a child growing up in Germany i was allowed to go where i wanted, climb what i wanted etc. When I came to America at age 11 I felt like I was put in a cage.

***** It's quite similar in Denmark. I don't understand why you think they deserve i though? They're just saving people in need by giving them shelter. Their immigrations system just isn't the best. There's also the fact that they've accepted way to many considering their size...The thing is, here at least and I think something similar in Sweden, you don't have to work to get paid. You get support from the state if you don't have a job and it's actually a decent amount of money. You also get paid to go to school, also quite a generous amount. So when people come here, they don't always feel like they have to work because they expect to be supported by the state. They also seek out areas where other people who speaks their language live (ie ghettos. the ghettos came to be because the state placed all the immigrants in the same areas though, so it's their own fault mostly that they exist.) It's a mess but every country has it's problems. And it's not like every immigrant has bad intentions.
Every school should be like this, these kids are learning more stuff out in the wild then in a classroom
I'm from Denmark and I went to a forest kindergarden, and did all those things like played with big saws, knifes, explored and climbed the biggest trees I could find. It was fantastic, and I didn't find any trouble learning, actually I was ahead of most in my class.

I went to Løvspring wildlife-kindergarten (Viborg, in Denmark) and i must say that this was something I couldn't have been the same without. Now I'm a scout that loves wildlife and the other children can learn a lot from me :-) this was a nice insight on things.

But this extends to our whole culture :) These kindergartens are spreading more and more, because a lot of us are finally starting to realize that Iphones and tablets maybe aren't the best tools for assuring a good future for your kids. unfortunately true. American parents need to not wrap their kids in bubble wrap, because that's not life. They need to be taught the uses of knives as tools...not toys. Put them in Girl/Boy Scouts as soon as they are old enough.(or ready/want to)

Great video! I learned how to use a knife at a young age and respect them for the tools that they are. I wish more outdoor education would be adopted in here in the west.
Even if you didn't go to a forest kindergarten, there's an almost 100% chance that you've frequently visited a Naturskole (literally a nature school) as part of your education after kindergarten, i visited two very often one was right next to one of Denmarks deepest lakes called Furesø, where we learned about a multitude of fish and learned how to sail/fish, cook fish on a fire etc. and the other was a part of a farm so we learned slaughtering animals the old school way, taking care of farm animals and how to be around different farm animals, such as cows, chickens, sheep/goat and pigs, all within 10-15km of Copenhagen.
I's not that weird when you think about how big agriculture continues to be in Denmark, of course it's gone down the last 20-30 years especially in the fishing market, but i'm fairly sure these opportunities in early school years helps tremendously with keeping them alive.
Having grown up in Værløse I too have visited that particular nature school, but it seems that you had a much more rich experience than me. Although I did see how to break a deer in school, most of my experience with nature, such as slaughtering and preparing chickens came from my time as a scout, rather than from my school education.
Let me add how breaking a deer and slaughtering animals in general is meant to teach the kids about animals and food. Where the meat is located and from what parts of the animal. We teach the kids to pay our respects to the animal if we use everything we can and dont let anything go to waste. The smell, the blood etc is all part of the learning process and no, it wont make them natural born sociopath killers but they will know the food was not made in the local supermarket :)
Jeg er 14 og bor og går i skole i en lille by kaldet Horreby hvor der bor ca. 300 mennesker og der ligger en skole og en børnehave og en kirke og en købmand børnehaven var den jeg også gik i. Byen er nok mest kendt for at Mick øgendahl gik på den samme skole som jeg går nu Møllebakkeskolen. Men siden at jeg bor ude på landet på Falster, lavede vi de her slags ting med knive og vi havde et hønsehus hvor vi lærte at slagte dem og vi lærte at lave mad at den mad der groede i børnehaven. Jeg syntes personligt at det er vigtigt at børn fortsætter med at lære de her ting

We have the same thing in Norway, it's an amazing concept where the kids can develop themselves on their own terms. I hope others also can open their eyes to this kind of kindergarten and education.
OMG I MOVED TO THE UK WHEN I WAS 5 BUT I WAS BORN ON DENMARK COPENHAGEN! THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT WE USED TO DO OMG! IT WAS SOO FUN! WE WENT SKIING, hiking camping everything!! Danish people are really clever they let children explore life before putting a textbook in your face I always loved that! Can’t wait to go back this summer!

This how children have learned for hundreds of years, it’s only recently that we have become over protective and I’m guilty of this myself.
Denmark is a nation with strong trade unions, and a strong social support system (nearly socialist), with a "market" economy that is well regulated by a democratic government. As such they enjoy a high standard of living and a high level of income equality - as well as (some might argue BECAUSE OF) one of the world's highest income tax rates.
In a nation with minimal social division, and low poverty rates, children learn to use knives - as they say in the video - "not at a weapon but at a tool."
It's amazing how some on this thread interpret this video as supporting the North American gun crazies - it is nothing of the sort, but rather is a beautiful illustration of what happens when a strong government redistributes wealth to maintain a peaceful and prosperous society: children thrive. Can we say that about our "democracy" in the United States?

Wonderful to see joy, curiosity and playfulness being valued and nurtured - children in their natural habitat!
My parents also gave me knifes and even saws , to make my own toy trucks and toy guns, when I was 5 years old. I cut myself many times. I am 41 years old now.

Im from Denmark and i rember going to kindergarden like this and it was amazing. Sorry if i spelled anything wrong.
I am from Denmark and i thought this was normal!? They said it was freezing and 5 degrees.. Normally its 2 degrees in Denmark wth.. This is the soft side of Denmark in my opinion
They don't "play" with knives, they learn to use them. Knives are not toys.

This should be more normal. Kids are amazing and people do not give them enough credit. They can learn anything you know, faster more efficiently and more completely than you ever could.
In Norway we are letting the kids use knife. I've done that my self when I was 4 years old and now I am 11 years older and still doing it
They dont play with them they cut things but they get many hours just learning about knife safety and learn not to cut against each other and not to cut in against themself.
I love that my parents let me be free and never really held me back, got my first knife when I was 5 and 10 years later I have a collection of around 25 knives. I still go into the forest atleast once a week if not more
They are not playing with knives, they are using them...
This kind of thing reminds me of things that I did as a kid. 10/10 would send my kids to an outdoor kindergarten.
Lol I thought all this was pretty common in kindergarten, at least in the western world...
The difference is how much time they spend outside. This type of kindergarten is rarely to never inside.
