Looks really sorted out as a “personal item” to keep at my seat when flying to SE Asia 20 hours. I use the sternum straps on packs to stabilize the shoulder straps so they won’t slip off, and the waist strap to clip to the arm of my chair at restaurants. In terms of features, I’ve lived through over 40 years of “feature bloat” made possible thanks to offshore manufacturing advances and efficiencies. I’ve come to the conclusion that simpler is often better for me, less padding is better too. I really appreciate the laptop slot, though, an almost essential feature these days, this is much better than the Daylight which lacks one. Especially reverting to more a more rectangular shape like the Convertible Packing Cube Backpacks is really helpful for packing cube travel.

I don't think it has any liners per se - the yellow Halcyon you see inside is all functioning as panels or pockets, not liners. Even the Halcyon in the rear of the laptop slot is a panel containing the foam pad. So if you reexamine the bag, there is no added weight wasted on unnecessary linings. Also this flattens into checked luggage much better than every 20L competitor. If you still have the Paragon around, plus their Daylight Backpack, I'm curious if the Paragon really holds 3L extra. The foam back panel, plus the foam front laptop panel, can really suck away a lot more volume than we expect. For example a 12" x17" x .2" foam pad can occupy 750 mm. Left over laptop slot space not filled by a iPad is also pretty unrecoverable.

I was in love until I saw that there were no water bottle pockets on the side. It would have made an interesting competitor to the Evergoods Half Zip 22L. It would have made a killer school bag and the vein of buy it for life.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts here, Mathew. We definitely get where you're coming from, not being able to carry a water bottle outside your pack does really make a difference with how you can use this bag.

Always wanted to try a Tom bihn bag I do like the looks of it. But being floppy not sure if I would like that. I have a bellroy classic backpack and it has some nice structure to it. I have seen backpacks made of nylon and they basically take on the look of what you pack inside not crazy about that. Great review thanks for giving us a view into this new collaboration 🙏🏻

Hey folks, what’s the real world capacity like on this? I’m surprised that it’s listed as less than 20 liters. The dimensions suggest that it should be at least a few liters more than that.

Is there a key loop in the outside pocket?

Hey MrWesQ, the front quick-grab pocket has a built-in key leash. You can see a closeup of this in our full written review here: packhacker.com/travel-gear/tom-bihn/paragon-backpack/

I already dislike this bag, reminds me of the cheap backpacks of the 80s with beefed up shoulder straps
