I really appreciate the effort to contextualize the production history and provide some details on the companies/individuals involved in these projects. It's a substantial undertaking!
Reminds me of how beautifully detailed the Macross characters are in it's original T.V. Anime to it's movie "Do You Remember Love?" Macross FlashBack 2012 is great too! :)
I remember reading online that Record of Lodoss War is what most D&D players want their campaigns to be like, Slayers is what most of their campaigns turn into.
In the past, many people used to scuff at Legend of Lemnear, but personally, I've always enjoyed! Not only being a Satoshi Urashihara fan, but just for the beautiful spectacle of it's animation!
Glad to hear you mentioning Taarna. It was immediately my first thought upon watching the beginning of this. Right through the bar fight it feels almost like an anime copy. Which certainly isn't a bad thing because, as you also pointed out, Taarna kicks ass. That's the OVA in a nutshell, though. Very simple plot but it's pure frosting. A tight 45 minutes that's pretty much non-stop blood and boobs with only the occasional brief moment of exposition to keep the plot rolling. It's unsophisticated in the way of a great exploitation film or punk album. All killer, no filler. I'd also give the soundtrack a nod. Again, it's nothing amazing but it's consistently rockin'. Except for the oddly silent end credits. We get a sudden freeze frame and then... credits roll in pure silence. I have to wonder if there was a rights issue that had it removed or something because it's an odd choice.
What else can be said about Urushihara Satoshi? The maker of manga's most mesmerizing mamaries. The only purveyor of pR0/\/ dedicated to every detail of drawing dreamkiller cans in the noble effort of helping weebs and dweebs the world over to successfully crank down for almost 40 years!
According to my records, I've seen this anime. But I remember nothing about it, so I may have to rewatch it. I've been an anime fan for at least 30 years and have trouble remembering everything I've seen.
Oh shit! I actually have heard of this one before! Bennet the Sage did an old Anime Abandon episode about it! I actually named an OC after it because I thought the title "Bronze Champion" was too cool not to reuse Wicked!
Same, sage's video is the only reason I know about this anime (and the reason I clicked on this video). Although he ripped into it, it's stuck in the back of my mind. I dont think I'd watch it on my own time but I liked the visuals and character design at a time when I didn't really care for the general 80s anime style.
I know this one and I like Lemnear. It's a bummer it isn't a series and it could've been more. Even if the English dub is kind of awkward, this is definitely a classic gem that shouldn't be forgotten. We could use a Lemnear Renaissance or maybe a reboot as well as a remaster.
There’s a great mashup of taarnas scenes and the Blue Öyster Cult song vengeance, the pact, that was written for her segment but was rejected for summarizing the whole plot in 3 minutes
The artstyle for this Ova is what I find interesting. Not the fanservice. I'm not a fanservice type of guy. The way the characters faces+ eyes are drawn and concept story wise is interesting on it's own. The characters have a vinatge style with beautiful faces. The eyes are very pretty and detailed too. I like drawling pretty guys and pretty men so seeing ovas with pretty artstyles inspired me as well as series like Jojo Bizzare Adventure, Fist of the Northstar, and Macross . I also appreciate experimental and less conventional styles as well.
I'm amazed that 'Heavy Metal' made it's money back during it's initial release. Animated films aimed at adults rarely ever make an impact, but I guess 'Heavy Metal' was one of the rare exceptions. Sure, it didn't make 'renaissance era' Disney money, but compared to it's contemporaries, that's impressive.
I think that there was a significant fanbase of adult animation fans and in the late 70s early 80s there was a larger than average number of animated films aimed at adults
I think it's inspiring that a bunch of veterans in the animation industry wanted to make their own version of Heavy Metal. Yeah, the could've been reworked (that's where you have the manga for that), but it's still an enjoyable anime to watch
13:12 What's also quite unbelievable and tasteless is that that was Keiko Yokozawa, who had just voiced Sheeta from _Laputa: Castle In the Sky_ the previous year, was wasted voicing this character (wouldn't surprise me if she hated working on the project too). 😟
what was impressive was the amount of colors and shadows... no doubt that the animators are suffering when working on urushihara's chara designs. Maybe the tits are a kind of reward to encourage them to enjoy their work despite the low salary. 😉
I somehow got a figurine of this lead character in a (truly) blindbox at Comic Con in (I want to say) 2006ish. I've been wondering for years who it was, but I'm 95% this is the same girl.
What's better to grab, the U.S. Manga Corps, or Manga Entertainment DVD? I like to have physical releases of most anime OVAs and films if that's an option, even OOP. Can't find much info on the US release of this anime though.
1:40 Did anyone know the Movie "The Spine of Night?"Ist an 2021 animated Movie very strong influence by Ralph Bakshi and Heavy Metall, its for fans of that Kind of Movies a Goldmine.
Never realized that Urushihara worked on Megazone 23 part 2. I blame that on his work being overshadowed by Umetsu. "Yes I missed the topless girl on page 3 because I was distracted by the hardcore shoot in the centerfold.." The "Heavy Metal" comparisons are apt. B-17 might get more love, but the flight scenes in Tarna were rumored to have been outsourced to Japan (and it's easily 2nd best minimum). The early 80s saw a sort of convergence in animation style (or a bunch of horny kids, and dirty old men cutting loose). There is a fair amount of Anime that looks rather "Euro" style in this era. You did "Dragon's Heaven" will Cobra be next? Another kinda Euro-anime how about "Grey" (which if nothing else feels like a preview of video games that hadn't even been thought of)? Every time I recognize Urushihara's work, the first words in my head are "perky", followed by "and his characters are pretty energetic too.." If Urushihara is the breast king, dare you do a retrospective on Masakazu (the king of tiny butts)? He's more of a Manga force than anime, but still, he's done so many fairly short shows..
Thank you for this video! Slight note: you use the phrase "if I do say so myself" to praise this anime, but that phrase is intended to be used when praising one's self or one's own work, not someone else's. That's why it's always said with a naughty tone, acknowledging that it's a form of bragging.
As a comrade in the crusade concerning communication calling for correction, I commend you, Ser. Especially as I had never been expressly educated on the intended invocation of the phrase in question.
It’s no Bastard! But it will do in a pinch. Pure fantasy was at a premium at the time. On a unrelated note I wonder how the DND drama would have affected a few anime properties. I swear it was the only angle that never got brought up.
Since you gave it a brief mention I’m wondering if you might review new cream lemon: white shadow at a later date? Or would it be to risky for this channel.
I love this anime. Sure it ain’t perfect, and I know it ain’t. But it has Potential! And considering that there is a Set of Manga books out there! Yeah! I am so Down for seeing another Adaptation of this Anime! I want to see it! And if Critical Roll’s Vox Machina proved that Boobs can go into an adult animated Series! Then Legend of Lemnear has a chance! 😊
i remember watching this like last year and not really understanding the plot. i pretty much just watched it because it was pretty and because Urushihara made it.
Ah ah... I too thought it was wierd that he knew the weakest point of the boss : his eye on his forehead. 😅 maybe we should blame the lack of time... or ... it is so "cliché" that the guess was actually not hard.
plastic little would be also interesting to cover but... will you dare to cover urushihara's "front innocent" ? to be honest, i felt bad for the animators because they obviously worked a lot... but it is the proof that you will never be rewarded when working hard on a real porn anime because of the illegal copies.
@ 6:40 Oh, good grief! You could skim the grease off this guy and lubricate the entire mechanics of a tractor trailer... Poor guy probably thought this was a "good angle," too. [ Shudder ]
...Really? I thought everyone agreed that B-17 (based on a concept by Dan O'Bannon) was the best segment from Heavy Metal. I mean I know you have to keep things on brand but Tarna? The best segment?
I had to check my notes as this anime seems so familiar I thought I have seen it but the notes say no. I guess its just that the story is that unoriginal its easy to mix it up with other bikini warrior fantasy flicks. That animation does seem pretty good tho.
The ova could have been better written too. Imagine if we had Beserk level of writting with this Ova that would have been amazing. Plus the fanservice is a bit distracting and gets in the way of trying to tell a story. Then again I was never a fanservice guy so I'm not the target audience for that . I don't like fanservice . I just really like how the artist draws faces. He has a very pretty artstyle. Unfortunately it seems like he only makes fanservice. I wish he could apply his style to a more well thought out story that dosen't rely or have fanservice. I'm a huge fan of story telling , I tend prefer a good story overall . Not discrediting the effort put into this Ova. I just prefer more story driven Anime . With great character development or themes. 🤷♂️
I think now, something i was watching, about the modern anime and think it, these anime, they dont have a problem in showing breasts, they dont have a problem in showing blood, the girl feels pain, get tired, the enemy is in its own way terrifign and is not playing around, 40 minutes, these remind me wanna be or Ayane chan high kicks, in a couple of ovas entertein, and put effort, yes it is inconsistent in its animation, but it is generaly good, and now modern anime cant give me more good animation all looks made in pc, the main protagonit when is not op as hell, is weack a prvert or look like a cry baby

I absolutely love this anime. It's the perfect example of objectivity meaning nothing to how enjoyable an anime can be.
I really appreciate the effort to contextualize the production history and provide some details on the companies/individuals involved in these projects. It's a substantial undertaking!
I always love that extra info and how projects got started/greenlit to begin with.
I wish this one and Plastic Little would get a blu ray release...together as one set would be awesome.
Reminds me of how beautifully detailed the Macross characters are in it's original T.V. Anime to it's movie "Do You Remember Love?" Macross FlashBack 2012 is great too! :)
Usual reasons aside, Urushihara Satoshi is just amazing alongside Kenichi Sonoda and other Bubblegum Crisis alumni.
I can't get over how she looks super detailed in some scenes to somewhat detailed in other scenes
Hopefully you one day talk about Record of Lodoss War, the antithesis to your favorite fantasy anime, Slayers
I remember reading online that Record of Lodoss War is what most D&D players want their campaigns to be like, Slayers is what most of their campaigns turn into.
The ova dub of Lodoss War is amazing
@@mainstreetsaint36 that quote was stated near the start of his review of Slayers Season 1
I think Ruins explorer is more like Slayers and how about Arslan Senki, never see anyone talk about this one

Love all your videos i swear! This was very informative
