Awe! Im so sorry your family and especially E are going through all this. Please remember that people do care and Wish you the Best . So much LOVE and admiration for your ability to handle this situation. ❤
Love this! I’ve been growing dahlias for years and I appreciate your knowledge. The biggest issue for me is pest control. The best thing we did was put in a couple of fountains low enough attracting frogs and other creatures that eat earwigs, aphids and grasshoppers. Biodiversity created the best dahlia blooms ever without organza bagging. I admire your strength and courage sharing your heartbreaking journey and triumphs with your daughter Fully support you and your family
Yes! I love this! Having a local water source is so important. You'll not only attract frogs but also birds too. I think people underestimate the importance of biodiversity and doing something as simple as what you did can make a world of difference when it comes to pests. With a situation like yours, you should have no problem overwintering and getting decent blooms! I should probably put in a little fountain but I do have toads in my field :)
@@bareflowerfarm 1st time I saw hummingbirds, praying mantis, giant darner dragonflies, sphinx moths in my garden and I loved watching them so many honey bees drink water. We used solar water fountain (from Amazon) and a large shallow pot and put rocks so bees can perch on the edge and drink. Another diy 2 buckets different sizes and a submersible pump
This is so helpful. I come here to learn the science part of flowers. Thank you very much 🙏🏻🥰❤️ I am so glad to see your daughter doing ok/well. Sending love from here 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻❤️❤️❤️
I only grow for myself, but I am in zone 5 and have had terrible luck with dahlias. This video has unlocked some reasons why. Thank you for still giving us a part of yourself despite having your mind and energy pulled by one of hardest things any human can face 🧡 continuing to root for you all in this unprecedented season and hoping you have the full network of support you need
Thank you so much for all the information. I LOVE the science part of your videos, they are amazing! I just found you thanks to Crane and his channel and I’m thrilled because I am working on starting a small scale part time flower farm business. I am in zone 7b. I have been gardening for many years, it is something I love and do anyway so I might as well make some money from it. I had to close my dance studio of 23 years recently due to health issues of my own and my 9 yo daughter so I admire how brave and strong you are to keep going at such a high level, share your story AND ask for help. I find asking for help so very difficult while at the same time, loving to help others, so silly. I hope that your journey helps inspire support for cancer research and leads to a cure for your precious baby. My daughter gets crazy high fevers (she had fevers as high as 106 while on fever reducers last week) so I know how terrifying it is. I will keep you and your family in my prayers. Please make sure to take time for yourself for self care. I know gardening can be both a stress and healing process so I hope you are able to find that balance. ❤
❤️ our son was diagnosed with a rare genetic condition when he was just a baby, and it has added a layer to parenting. I empathize with the rollercoaster you must be on right now. My son is 22 now and there are still lots of medical appointments, but it's part of the routine. I hope your experience is as smooth as it can be. Take good care of yourself and your family.
I'm so sorry to hear this. I know this will be a lifelong of monitoring and I am holding out hope that modern advances in medicine can mean potentially a different future for our kids than the last generation. I hope your son is doing as best as he can be with his situation!
I don’t sell flowers, so I ordered my ranunculus with you to help support🌸 Please know that you and your family are in my thoughts and I’m sending energy, strength and positivity your way.
Jessie, couldn’t help but cry so much for you. I’m so sorry about the genetic diagnosis ❤️ nothing I can say can make you feel better, but I know technology and research is only getting better. lily had a g-tube for 4yrs even though at 2yrs old she basically ate completely orally. She just got it removed last month because she’s handling illnesses much better after her Fontan surgery. I’m so thankful we had it for her last surgery or anytime she got super sick! it was such a life savor for giving meds, fluids, and extra calories. I know you will become a pro at it! probably already feel like you could be a nurse. Sending so much love to you guys, thank you for the updates!
I love these science based videos you do, as a dahlia home enthusiast for 4 years now, this was awesome and is making me question some of my presprouting for early blooms...
I'm so glad to hear! I would love to know from you though, how does presprouting work for you? I think it can work beautifully well, assuming you provide the dahlias with the conditions it wants- ie more light and keeping them on a heat mat. You can essentially jumpstart the process of allowing them to put on vegetative growth so that once August comes around, they are really primed to start putting out blooms for you and you can get a longer harvest out of them!
last year I grew some dahlias from seed I collected myself. (By the time I planted the seeds I actually thouhgt they were zinnia seeds. They really look alike😅) At the end of the season when I dug them up the tubers were huge, and I kept 3 of them that gave absolutely stunning dahlias. Sending my love for your family.
Yayyy! I'm so happy that youtube recommended your channel! I'm only 44 seconds in and you got me hook line & sinker (I'm a huge nerd and I'm literally researching about the microclimate that I live in to adjust my gardening practices). Thank you for posting this! I'm gonna watch the rest of the video now lol. ***Edit: I should have waited to comment! I don't know if I would be able to donate right now, but I want to help. I'll share E's story at the very least! But would it be possible to donate in exchange for some seeds from your dahlias? You grow beautiful flowers and I'm planning a breeding program for my wedding flower garden, including dahlias and zinnias as focal flowers. I'm looking for vibrant purples and blues, then dusty pink/orange sunset colors for accent flowers. So if you have anything like that, all the better! I really hope that more research is done on E's condition, and I'd love to help make that happen in any ways that I can.
I just planted my tubers last week, definitely too early for my country then! (Southern hemisphere). Now I almost want to go dig them back up 😅 Here I was thinking since the weather was warming up quicker than expected, I could plant them sooner
I am in zone equivalent to us 3 or 2 , dahlias thrive in this climate, but early frosts are a problem, our summer has been chilly and rainy, dahlias developed too slow, and was knocked out by a early frost night in early september. Normal years my dahlias start blooming in late july and through august until first frost sometimes in september
Wow, that is really cold! Where do you live exactly? It's unfortunately been a tough year for many with dahlias this year between abnormal rains, abnormally hot summers, etc :(
Firstly, I'm sending good vibes to you and your family! My question as a first time dahlia grower: to keep the tubers in the ground over winter OR pull them up and plant them in the spring. Did your research indicate pros or cons? I'm zone 6A/B so similar to your growing zone. Thanks and all the best with this upcoming weeks surgery ❤
Thank you for your well wishes :) I think it depends on your situation. If you're someone who has really worked on cultivating a microecosystem where you have natural predators and beneficials that can help you mitigate pests at the height of summer, then by all means I would say try to overwinter! Or if you are willing to spray, you need to be ready to spray because any successfully overwintered dahlias will likely be pest prone. You may want to do both. Dig up some and overwinter some so that way you can see which works better for you!
The 2 years I went to the trouble of digging my tubers, they froze or rotted where they were stored. 😂😢 So my solution is to buy inexpensive tubers, plant then where they get good drainage, mulch really well, and hope for the best. Not all the tubers survive, but for the price/work I will stick with leaving them in the ground (zone 7b).
