Good thing they went on to more memorable work!

I'm all for vegan stuff. But I seriously I don't find anything "Vegan Propaganda" in it, it's a silly movie about turkeys rewritting history to not be part in the menu. Also I wanted to point out the glaring issue with the cheese pizza.
The issue with most of Reel FX's movies is they have really solid animation but they always falter in the story and character development. Not surprised Free Birds turned out the way it did because it's written/directed by the same guy who did Jonah Hex.
At this point anti-vegetarians are about as annoying as vegetarians themselves. My cousin is a vegetarian for example and she gets assblasted by my boomer family for it almost every time I see her.
I'm not a vegetarian, but I do have an allergy to red meat, and when I tried to explain it to my family they would make fun of me for "going vegan" despite the fact that they'd see me eat chicken and fish all the time. I honestly doubt my step-family actually knew what vegetarianism/veganism was, only that they were supposed to hate it for some reason.

Slate isn't a satirical and from my, admittedly brief, amount of research it appears that the writer of the article, Dan Kois, has not written any satirical news pieces in the past or least recently. Even if the claims may seem ridiculous many people hold ridiculous beliefs, not to mention that most of the problems he sides are real and could likely be a source of actual guilt for him.
One of my old teachers claimed to have come up with this movie originally. He said he wrote a book called "The Wish Bone Adventure", a story about a group of kids who accidently traveled back in time to Thanksgiving by breaking a piece off of a wish bone. He claims that the studio behind the movie stole his idea, and produced the movie without his knowledge. Then again, that teacher said a lot of crazy crap, so I have no idea if it's true

What I thought was a show that was sick and demented for its own sake turned out to have red flags for real pathological traits on the part of its main creator, especially in Adult Party where John K. had full creative control and Nickelodeon no longer held back his worst impulses. I mean he animated an entire 2-3 minute segment of an episode that was just Ralph Bakshi taking a shit while Ren and Stimpy were made to watch uncomfortably. Just because he could. Two interesting facts: Thanksgiving is celebrated also in Canda (albeit a month early) and Saint Lucia, and the US Presidential Turkey Pardon was made official in the 1980s by Mr. Reagan to avoid pressure over Iran tensions and an affair (Some argue the pardon dates back to the Truman admin. as a response to a weekly ban on meat).
Actually it makes a lot of sense that Free Birds made most of its money from outside the USA. Even tough we don't celebrate everyone around the world knows about Thanksgiving so we can relate to it. And since we don't much care about it we aren't swaid by controversy claims like "its anti-tradition"
It's so jarring when Americans think that Thanksgiving is a worldwide thing. There are equivalents in other countries, but they're not nearly as popular, so seeing Thanksgiving posts on social media is like "Oh, right, that exists".

I'm not a vegetarian, but I do have an allergy to red meat, and when I tried to explain it to my family they would make fun of me for "going vegan" despite the fact that they'd see me eat chicken and fish all the time.
I honestly doubt my step-family actually knew what vegetarianism/veganism was, only that they were supposed to hate it for some reason.
It's definitely boomer but the difference is that anti vegans are technically not wrong.

It sounded tounge in cheek but in a "Yeah I'm still not taking my kids to see this movie" way. I also wouldn't want my kids (if I had any) asking too many questions as the turkey's in the oven.
The beginning part was reasonable enough, I don't think I'd show this to my kids on Thanksgiving either. But by the end it became an off the rails copypasta.

It was clearly a parody of the typical "concerned parent afraid of a silly kids movie" type article, don't know how anyone could miss that.
Slate isn't a satirical and from my, admittedly brief, amount of research it appears that the writer of the article, Dan Kois, has not written any satirical news pieces in the past or least recently. Even if the claims may seem ridiculous many people hold ridiculous beliefs, not to mention that most of the problems he sides are real and could likely be a source of actual guilt for him.
One of my old teachers claimed to have come up with this movie originally. He said he wrote a book called "The Wish Bone Adventure", a story about a group of kids who accidently traveled back in time to Thanksgiving by breaking a piece off of a wish bone. He claims that the studio behind the movie stole his idea, and produced the movie without his knowledge. Then again, that teacher said a lot of crazy crap, so I have no idea if it's true
I hate to tell your teacher, but that's literally the plot of an episode of a children's TV show that is called, I shit you not, "Wishbone." Except it's not a literal wishbone, there's just a dog named Wishbone who can time travel.

What I thought was a show that was sick and demented for its own sake turned out to have red flags for real pathological traits on the part of its main creator, especially in Adult Party where John K. had full creative control and Nickelodeon no longer held back his worst impulses. I mean he animated an entire 2-3 minute segment of an episode that was just Ralph Bakshi taking a shit while Ren and Stimpy were made to watch uncomfortably. Just because he could. What an absolute waste of talented animation.

Free Birds became a cult classic years after the controversy when it released, in a more ironic enjoyment whimsy. The film where they travel back in time to get turkeys off the menu. Best animated epic next to Secret of NIMH and The Land Before Time.

Two interesting facts: Thanksgiving is celebrated also in Canda (albeit a month early) and Saint Lucia, and the US Presidential Turkey Pardon was made official in the 1980s by Mr. Reagan to avoid pressure over Iran tensions and an affair (Some argue the pardon dates back to the Truman admin. as a response to a weekly ban on meat).
Actually it makes a lot of sense that Free Birds made most of its money from outside the USA. Even tough we don't celebrate everyone around the world knows about Thanksgiving so we can relate to it. And since we don't much care about it we aren't swaid by controversy claims like "its anti-tradition"
It's so jarring when Americans think that Thanksgiving is a worldwide thing. There are equivalents in other countries, but they're not nearly as popular, so seeing Thanksgiving posts on social media is like "Oh, right, that exists".
