    I have been watching vinyl channels for some time and all seem to be Beatles this Beatles that, Jazz this Jazz that type channels, then I found your channel and how refreshing to see someone talk about all types of albums I never heard about from groups I didn't know existed. I have since started looking for post punk, punk, and rock albums from off the wall groups that only die hard collectors would know.

    • @TheOmahaIntrovert
      @TheOmahaIntrovert  Год назад +4

      Thank you for the compliment. Yes, the vinyl community is pretty oversaturated with Beatles and jazz collectors. However, I can't knock any of them. I like the Beatles, but you won't see me collecting every version/pressing of all their albums, etc. I don't remember the last time I showed any Beatles on my channel. I do show jazz on occasion, though!
      What you will find here is mostly post punk, punk, shoegaze, jangle, college rock, and power pop! Those are my passions and I'm happy to be a channel to cater to those with more similar and offbeat music taste! So much music out there to explore! Cheers!

    Congrats on finding that Ruts album. It's definitely a classic of the time, although, it seems to fall under the radar somewhat. After Malcolm Owen died the rest of the band kept going as Ruts DC and made a great album titled Animal Now that is almost as classic as The Crack. Give that one a listen if you haven't hear it. That Strange Boutique album by Monochrome Set, I think is a great one. It took me a lot of listens to get there but I really enjoy listening to it now. It might help to know ( if you don't already) that Andy Warren on bass and Lester Square on guitar were both previously members of Adam & The Ants. Whenever I listen to that album I can hear a little bit of Adam & The Ants.

    Holy moly! What a great haul! All from one show.
    That was a huge nostalgic flashback seeing that Cherry Red compilation. A friend in high school had that and we passed it around getting a few days with it each. I am sure it was foundational in setting so many of my favorite bands.
    You may already have it but there is another Cherry Red comp called Pilows & Prayers that covers a bunch of independent artists from the era. Not as seminal as Burning Ambitions but still great.
    This Mortal Coil's version of Song To The Siren may be one of my top 5 songs. I am sure it sounds amazing on vinyl.
    You really sum up what happened with Simple Minds very well. Strange as it may seem U2, Echo & the Bunnymen, and Simple Minds were all fighting to become big stadium acts and conquer America. Obviously, U2 won that race. But it really hurt Simple Minds in the attempt. Waterfront is the most obvious example of that awful stadium sound. Oh, and that awful cover of Street Hassle.
    C O D E is absolutely lower-tier Cabaret Voltaire. But persevere as all Cabs is interesting, even as they got a little more commercial. You have Red Mecca, that and The Voice of America are my absolute favorites.
    I am ambivalent about The Clash. But lean more toward London Calling than the debut. Black Market Clash is a nice collection of reggae and soul covers. That 10" and The Fall's Slates were my only discs at that size for a while.
    Babylon's Buring! I need to give that a spin. Malcolm Owen's death was overshadowed by Ian Curtis'. They died within a couple of days of each other. Owen & the early Ruts deserved more attention.
    Alright, I could talk about pretty much every find. Scott Walker - Monochrome Set - Verlaines!
    Thanks for sharing, another great video!

    • @TheOmahaIntrovert
      @TheOmahaIntrovert  Год назад +1

      Hey there, Richard, and thanks for sharing your thoughts on my pickups as always! Ah, I'll have to look up Pillows and Prayers from Cherry Red. Marine Girls, Felt, and Monochrome Set on it - NICE!
      Oh, very cool to read that TMC's Song to the Siren is possibly in your top 5 songs! I think there are some issues with this remaster. I will be on the hunt for an original, of course.
      Yeah, Sparkle in the Rain is pretty dreadful. I honestly don't see myself playing it again to be completely honest. Pretty forgettable...
      I'm gonna be looking more into earlier Cabaret Voltaire. I simply haven't heard enough so I look forward to that listening journey!
      Oh, I had no idea that Malcolm Owen and Ian Curtis died within days of each other. Agree that Ruts didn't get enough attention/praise. This is such a fantastic LP! Hope you can spin it soon! Later, my friend!

    Hi Hanna! That record show looked like it was a blast! I too have found out about local record shows AFTER the fact. Ughhh!
    The History of Punk LP is really good but I only have the first record. But I couldn't pass it up for $5. Nice Siouxsie score for $2! Can't wait for the Siouxsie ranking video! I need to start working on obtaining some original Siouxsie pressings. At the record store in the '90s we used to sell TONS of This Mortal Coil import CDs. I never saw any of their vinyl come through. I love that "Sparkle In The Rain" LP! I never noticed the bass lacking. I'll have to pay attention next time I play it. James is SO good! Really like their LP "Laid." "Black Market Clash" I found the 10 inch at a thrift store back about 1999 or 2000 along with self titled and "Sandinista." I almost fainted. Never listened to The Ruts. Will check them out. That's great you found it from your wantlist! Congrats on getting the Velvet Crush reissue. Yay!

    • @TheOmahaIntrovert
      @TheOmahaIntrovert  Год назад +1

      Thanks, Nicola! Yeah, it's the worst when finding out about a show well after the fact. I feel like I really missed out!
      YES, I hope you can find some original Siouxsie pressings! Some of the more recent reissues are okay. My reissues of Juju and Hyaena I don't have a problem with, but bad reviews on some of the others. Especially avoid the Peepshow reissue, but we've already talked about that, hehe! The overseas website we both love is where I've scored most of my Siouxsie originals! 😏
      Unfortunately I just can't connect with this Sparkle in the Rain Simple Minds LP.
      Yeah, Laid by James is probably the most well known and so very good!
      Girl, I bet you'd love the Ruts! Check out this one, The Crack, especially!

    Good Morning 🌄 Hanna ! Micro-Phonies from 1984 is my favorite Cabaret Voltaire album has the club hit Sensoria on it. Remarkable that Cherry Red which was a smallish indie label in the 80's in now the # 1 reissue label. That's a difficult Simpleminds album. It rocks hard & is heavy on the drums 🥁 but a bit lacking in intimacy ! Up On The Catwalk is a great opener. The bass 🔊 on Waterfront was nicked by Tears For Fears on their smash Everybody Wants To Rule The World. Looking forward to Siouxsie album rankings ! Kaleidoscope # 1 for me ✌️

    Cool that you found the "This Mortal Coil" album with "Song to the Siren". I do enjoy the Big Star covers on that too (I like the originals better though) Another interesting 80's indie "Supergroup" were "The Golden Palominos"...Lots of cool folks on their early albums and nice cover songs.
    Amazing find on that" Scott" Album. The other 3 are great too, maybe even better.
    I don't know if you remember an 80's band called "China Crisis" I only had one of their albums and it was produced by Walter Becker. It does kinda sounded like Steely Dan at times too! Cabaret Voltaire have a long discography from Noise, Experimental, to EBM, Industrial to Acid House, similar to Front 242 or Coil I love all their early records up to late 80's. His Avant Gard material, The Drift is not to everyone's taste, but he certainly pushed boundaries in the 90s and onwards. You need to get Scott 2, 3 & 4.. Great haul! The Scott Walker OG press is very cool. His 3rd solo LP is my favorite. It's very dark and surreal, and a lot of the songs are in 3/4 time which gives the whole collection a dreamlike feeling. The mournful singing is there of course, and the lyrics are more narrative-focused. "It's Raining Today" is the opening tune and sets the tone for the rest of the album. I think it may also be the first appearance of dissonance in his music which blossomed decades later in his career.
    The Monochrome Set is such a great group! There was kind of a dip in quality in the 90's, but there's a good 2-cd comp called 'Chaps' that cherry-picks the 5 or 6 albums from that period. There's also an inexpensive box that has all of those albums if you really want to hear them. Even though most of what I've heard recently is really good, I still prefer the early period of the group. If you're able to find the 3-cd Cherry Red reissue of their "Eligible Bachelors" album, it also contains the essential compilation of early radio and demo tracks "Volume, Contrast, Brilliance!" in its entirety, all the singles and b-sides from that same era, as well as the very first demos and a live album that came later. Strange pairings, chronologically speaking, but if you want all that amazing early stuff that's where to find it in one place.
    Last thing, Andy Partridge has a new group called 3 Clubmen. They put out a single that's pretty good! It kinda resembles the XTC tune "River of Orchids." Circular structure, repetition, instruments added one at a time, the usual A Partridge moves.
    Thanks for the video!

    Xymox!!! Love that album Twist of Shadows...I played that thing to death on my college radio show and at home when I got it on CD early 90s...Blind Hearts, Obsession & Imagination all brilliant...been meaning to delve deeper into their catalogue...and This Mortal Coil...there is a 4CD box with all 3 albums & a 4th disc of the originals of the songs covered...really tough to find but I want it!! And did you score big on RSD23?? I did pretty good, one was that Sisters of Mercy EP on nice clear/smoke vinyl...

      Hi Lawrence! I appreciate you stopping by! As far as RSD, I showed the one release I picked up towards the end of this video - Verlaines Bird Dog. I have an original of that Sisters of Mercy EP, otherwise I probably would have grabbed the reissue, too! If you want to explore more from Clan of Xymox, go with Medusa next, the album before Twist of Shadows. So good! I'll look up that This Mortal Coil box set! Thanks!

    Excellent pick ups. Cabs' high point is definitely 'Microphonies'. After that album they start doing some kind of proto-techno that never really landed. Interesting that you bring up Devoto (love that TMC album), Kevin McMahon of Lucky Pierre and Prick fame could be Devoto reincarnate.

    I have two Scott Walker/Engel compilation LPs as given to me a few years ago by an older family member - "Fire Escape in the Sky" (curated by Julian Cope) and the original/first "Boy Child" (with Marc Almond liner notes). Also, the UK single "Jackie" on blue Philips 1967 in absolutely mint condition - I once saw its galloping beat memorably described by a music journalist as "The BBC Light Orchestra after one too many brown ales!".
    ("Brown ale" is a traditional type of beer which in England has a sort of downmarket comedy vibe as being beloved by Grandmas sitting in the saloon bar of pubs)
    I was aware from a few months ago of the "Teenage Symphonies" upcoming vinyl reissue and had made a note of it on my kitchen calendar for release on 14 April. But I haven't found anywhere in the UK stocking it, and I'm reluctant to buy it from as far away as the USA at exorbitant postage costs doubling the price, and also the possibility of it getting damaged somewhere in distant transit. It's very annoying!
    Btw I used to like sometimes posting comment on any one of your back catalogue videos but for the last two or three about a year or so ago it became apparent that you were not getting notification from YT so you weren't seeing them and I was talking to myself and that's the reason I don't do it anymore. 🤐

      Hi Shelley! I'm sorry you were commenting on some of my older videos without a response. That's one of my huge gripes about RUclips is that I don't always get notified on comments on my older videos. I do apologize. Sometimes there's no way I can know unless I manually go back through each video, which time does not allow. I always appreciate the comments, though!
      I'll have to check out that Scott Walker comp you mentioned that was compiled by Julian Cope. I usually enjoy anything that Cope touches so that will be fun to check out!
      I just checked the Mill City Sound website regarding the Velvet Crush reissues. Wow, looks like they're down to only one copy. I think there were maybe 5,000 to start with. I'm sorry that a company near you didn't stock it. Yeah, shipping can be insane. Well, I hope in the future you can get a copy somehow. I enjoyed my CD for the longest time. Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

    Cabaret Voltaire are a bit past their sell-buy date by 1985...1985, I regard as very much a before an after year of British alternative and post-punk. In that spirit...James...I'd recommend the earlier 'Village Fire' EP which is the two first singles released on Factory, which I think was released late 1985 or early 86 and predate their debut album by a musical eternity. It is pretty easy to get. I saw James supporting New Order, when they, and the world was still new and they were...heroic to say the least, Tim Booth at that time, channeling something of Ian Curtis through expressive dance whereas Low-Life era New Order already seemed like a band from a previous out of step decade.

    Great Xymox album. I got into them and Moev at the same time. When I heard they were in the same scene with Joy Division I tried but could never get into Cabaret Voltaire. James- Seven has always been a favorite for me. They are an awesome live band. They started the concert with just the singer and guitar player going through the audience singing the first song and the last song they had over 50 people with them on stage all singing the last song. How does that Mofi Sisters album sound? It is the only album of their's I don't have on vinyl but heard the sound quality is lacking.

    5 bucks for Code??!! First album I heard by Cabaret Voltaire. I think they had a dance club hit off of this album, since my brother picked up the CD after hearing it in the dance clubs in the 80's. (The CD is in my collection now.) The CD used to be worth $50 or so about a decade or more ago. I have the 10" of that Clash album I bought at the most killer auction about 5 years ago. Damn, if I would have had more money, I would have bid and won thousands of records for super cheap and in mostly near mint condition. If I could only go back in time and relive that auction experience. :/

    Hanna, the red-nosed record buyer! (Sorry, pal.) I agree with your assessment of Whatsit in the Rain, never warmed to it; I stick to the initial 5 Simple Minds albums and rotate them like crops. Likewise your take on later Cabaret Voltaire; their early stuff is the best, the wheels started coming off when they signed to Virgin. I didn't care for The Monochrome Set when I first heard them either - and still don't. 😂Hope you'll continue digging deeper into Scott Walker's discography; Scott to Scott 4 are all stellar, Climate of Hunter is an interesting album from the over-produced 80s, then there's TILT (oh my), the Drift (harrowing, even for someone who'd been a teenage Throbbing Gristle fan), Bish Bosh (GET OFF MY LAWN!); he even made a fine LP with Sunno))). It sounds as if This Mortal Coil's 12" (4 tracks) might have been the correct dosage for you; just the right amount of TMC with 'Song to the Siren' as its centrepiece. I haven't heard a note of Xymox. Must have missed those shows when Peel played them. Wow, that was a successful vinyl fishing trip & a half you had there & your purchases will help you fight off the allergies. Salute!
