John Frusciante hasn't used the DS1 in a long time (Californication era) and he's mostly known for using the DS2. He actually even has two of them on his board. If you want his clean sound you must get a Boss CE-1 or a clone of it because of the pre-amp in that pedal. There are some good videos on youtube explaining why that pedal is the most important piece of John's effect chain.
cool ...at jf's actual board is also a mxr micro amp. justin jeske has a cool youtube channel relatet to frusciante and john mayer and dave simpson had a bunch of jf related videos 😉
I'm a huge Frusciante fan and was using the DS-1 for years. I got a DS-2 a few months ago and let me tell you man, its a life changer! Even for people who arent chasing the John tone, its a was more diverse distortion pedal. You should 110% look into getting one for a Frusciante board though man, you will not regret it! Keep up the awesome content!
Exactly, The DS1 is nowhere near the JF tone we all know and love compared to the DS2. and whilst the DS2 is a common and cheap pedal theres nothing else that does its sound either
Been watching you since you first hit the scene. You’re doing a great job. Keep putting out awesome content and always working on your skills. I’ve been a player for 32 years and I always enjoy your content because I apply it to my playing and that sort of introspection helps make me a better player.
I can see the progression in your playing man, you keep getting more confident. Keep it up my dude! Also a "thunder dome" style shootout for the pedals on your pedal board would be cool.
There are 3 important rules in order to obtain frusciante tone: 1 Raise the gain and the bass frequency just the right amount in order to have more sustain and body (also take down the treble) 2
I have both the JH-1 and a CE-1 Pre-amp pedal. I have a Fender Amp and not a Marshall. I definitely recommend needing both the CE-1 pre-amp and a Marshall Amp or JH-1/Golden Plexi to get the dirty clean tone sound. it really depends what your end goal is or what your budget is. Play on - cheers.
@@geoffreytodd Marshall in-a-box and CE-1 clones (only preamp, the two switch version are expensive) cost nearly 200€ together. If one newbie jf fan (that wants analog equipment) could save money for a marshall combo, he could find used Marshall DSL for 400 bucks (or manage to buy Origin-20).
@ Mike Cole: since you're into Freschante ( spelling?? ) , I think you'd enjoy fellow youtuber, Dave Simpson! He has built several pedalboards aimed at a John-esque sound, while remaining true to his own sound and feel! He's one of my favorites, as are you!

Pretty sure the guy you bought the pedal from is in the band Ace Monroe from Nashville Tennessee. Just met the entire band and they’re all killer at what they do
I use mine into my vox ac15..with the master volume set for dirt. The micro amp gets it even more dirty...i tame it with the volume knob on the guitar. If you set the amp for clean tones, it'll be a great clean boost.
I’m gonna be honest. I’m sure in the room it does something, but I’m not really hearing justification for buying one. You sound great though. May listen again with headphones. Thank you for exploring this so I don’t have to, as always! Keep up the great work my friend
Beautiful tone, also the difference can clearly be heard. My little extra ‘hoompf’ comes from the tape saturation part of my Strymon Deco. But the MXR is cleaner. Interesting pedal!
Hey Mike, Not sure if you'll see this or not. I have a PastFX Pre-Amp Crunch that i'll be selling soon since I just bought the PastFX Chorus Ensemble which has it built in. It is truly an amazing pedal for Frusciante tones, but also just a nice always on pedal for a great dirty clean tone. It's basically brand new (only had it for a month before upgrading) and I only play at home. Let me know if you are interested in buying it - I'm just looking to get back what I paid for it :)
The main pedal for a Frusciante sound assuming you have a broken clean tone dialled in already is the DS2. No ifs no buts. Its that. Everything else can be got around easily, the DS2 is utterly unique
Frusc doesn’t really use the ds1 dawg. His “boosted” clean tone more so comes from the preamp in the boss ce1. For a boost like the micro amp there are really two ways you can use it…as a simple volume boost alone or after a dirt pedal. Or you can put it before a dirt pedal to increase the gain(not volume) in that dirt pedal.
To heck with the pedal Mike, you need a Polka dot scarf and rose colored glasses my man! That dude was a trend setter for sure right down to the snake skin boots! 😎
@mikecole4489 go down the Frusciante rabbit hole with us!!! I highly highly recommend getting a ds-2 next. You will love it so much it will stay permanently on your board for all time. It’s that pedal he uses in scar tissue, Dani California, can’t stop and more. Maybe try the the Ibanez wh-10, Pastfx chorus ensemble, or even get ahold of the obi-wah effect for throw away your television.
Love these videos. Also, Check out PastFX's Chorus Ensemble pedal, which is the Boss CE-1 Clone and it sounds amazing. It is truly the staple in JF's clean tone.
i also demo'd this pedal at a local store and liked the PastFX Pre-Amp Crunch / Chorus ensemble much more. i have a limited space/budget so i opted for that instead to simplify things and getting as much out of a pedal as possible.
I have been using a low gain amp in a box pedal (the Joyo American Sound) as a clean boost for a while and quite like it. It gives me a three knob eq and a wide range of od sounds, from clean boost to mid gain classic rock sounds, and has the added bonus of having a very fender amp like voicing, with a knob that takes you from the high headroom silver face tones, to the retro break up of the Tweed era. If you get a chance, try this pedal. For $50, there's a lot of versatility there.
If you really want to get the best out of your pedals try putting them infront of a tube amp at the edge of breakup. Ive tried many manyyyyy manyyyyyyyyyyy solid state, amp sims, for pedals and a tube amp response is unbeatable, ofc for clean tones i dont mind having a solid state amp but to take pedals well you need a tube amp. Hope it helps :)
My fav pedal of all time is the treble boost, these were in the days before distortion pedals. If you don't know about Rory Galllagher check him out, one of the best ever. Strat into a rangemater into a AC30 or fender tweed is pure heaven. I used to run a clean boost in the effects loop an treble boost in the front end, was sweet.
Hi mike Boss DS2 with lowish overdrive quite good works well, just got Tonerider pure vintage pickups in a crazy Aussie made cheap called Artist guitar must say nice up there with squier CV body with a Obsidian Wiring ST Blender 250k Strat in it it so mad good loe you to do a vid on it. I have Fender player with fat 50s but this cheapo guitar is so cool.
Congrats on the purchase! I do like these videos of you going out to buy used gear. As a fellow AC15 owner however I would definitely proceed with caution if you are thinking about getting a Tubescreamer, as I found that it didn't pair well with the AC15. It's a great pedal for many amps, but it will hijack an AC15's tone and you lose all of the character and clarity. It's worth a shot, but be prepared and unashamed to return it. A Transparent OD works really well, and there are many pedals that pair well with AC15. That's my 2 cents! Love the channel!
Yes, skip the Tube Screamer with a Vox. They're perfect to fill in the sonic space of mid-scooped Fender amps, but a Vox is already doing that naturally.
Yeah. If you have a Marshall run that pedal in from of your amp and your cleans will come alive! You’ll never want to play without it. It’s one of those pedals you don’t think you need until you get it. Flea also uses it to boost his bass solos.
Nice video. Enjoy your work. You might check out the Zvex Box of Rock. It includes both a clean boost and a nice drive that you can use to fatten your tone.
Talk about burying the lead! You totally skipped over the part where you TRAVELED BACK IN TIME to meet what I can only assume was someone ejected from the original lineup of The Allman Brothers Band and bought a pedal from him. TIME TRAVEL!! This could change humanity as we know it!
My mythos was always if a guitar amp cant give me a good clean tone and a great distortion I have the wrong amp. But now I kinda get it, I've always been a Marshall guy and to me my JCM205 is MY sound through 2x12 Cab I BUILT with 2 V30's. BUT>> damn when you play a really nice Fender TUBE amp the cleans on there to me just are UNTOUCHABLE. Fender cleans are just so chimey and beautiful I just can't get that on my JCM205. But also I am not a pedal guy, I have wah and a tuner pedal that's it. My playing style is Punk meets Blues (The Apitite sound)
Mike. Bro. Look into the PastFx Chorus Ensemble Preamp Crunch pedal. It's an, exact replica of the CE1 that John uses. Everything I've read says it's sounds incredible! I have no idea if they're even still made or what. Anyway. Just thought I'd share that with ya 👌 Hope you're doing well!
What you should do is grab a killer fuzz pedal. Try a Seymour Duncan La Rica Super Fuz & dial in a fuzz tone that sounds amazing…now drop your guitar volume some and enjoy one of the most amazing shimmering clean tones ever. You’re welcome.
I know exactly what you mean about wanting a boost but not in the gain/distortion/clipping sense but like a tone lift or saturation. Those are my fav type of pedal....there are so few out there. Everyone pushes the vertex but the brand irks me. The one I'm currently using is a sabbadius hot tube simulator (they do a new version called mr white). I'm really wanting a honey bee amps clean drive. IMHO it is the best boost pedal I've ever heard (can be used as an overdrive too).
Mxr make good pedals that are simple, great chorus, delay, phaser. Personally I use alot of ehx stuff which you shoukd check out but boss is my other go to.

Most dirt pedals' even level is at about 10 o'clock, and cranking them beyond that gives a lot of boost, so although I'm GASing pretty hard for this pedal, I'm wondering whether buying this might be redundant? Dumb question, I know, lol. The boost is different with a dedicated pedal like this for it..? Thx for being patient, hahaha. I want an excuse to buy this. 😊
The Boss DS2 is better for the Frusciante sound but the DS1W is also a good due to the custom mode having more mids. Will it nail the sound of RHCP? Probably not but it’s def a good way to mess with the sound. It’s more expensive than the actual DS2 but if you love the DS1 it might be good to check out
