I think installing Steam OS on a custom computer is really stupid. One of the huge reasons why I wanted to build a gaming PC was so I had a fast computer to get stuff done when I wasn't gaming. Yeah you can dual boot Windows or Linux along side it, but what's the point of Steam OS when you have an operating system that already plays games?
Devin Daniell For people who have their PC hooked up to a TV that don't wan't to deal with a K/M when they just want to kick back and play some games. And for people who want to re-purpose old machines as dedicated streaming boxes.

Hey Austin can you help me i want to know if i can run crysis 3 at max settings: - Intel Pentium II @ 223 MHz - 3dfx Voodoo - 12 MB RAM - 25 GB hard drive k thanks
GTA V isn't supported. Kinda makes SteamOS look like it has a little bit to go before it is a valid gaming platform. It really needs those AAA titles on it.

Shitty business practices aside, they have made some of the biggest games of the last few years and I will cry if TESVI isn't on Linux. All I'm saying is that Windows is still the better gaming platform because there are so many games that are good but not available on Linux.
I like the push for linux gaming, but honestly I'd rather use ubuntu or mint with steam running in "big picture". I don't see any inherent advantages to steamos.
Sauron The point of SteamOS was to create a simple solution for a console-like system, while at the same time pushing for Linux (and OS X) support by forcing game companies to switch to OpenGL and develop cross-platform code. As a desktop user, it would make more sense to just install Steam on whatever distro you use.
Sauron SteamOS is just Linux and Steam with everything the games need to have.. Ubuntu and Mint are bundled with all the crapsoftware and stuff you don't need (if your purpose is gaming)
you forgot about moneh! and for people like me who only use Windows for games it would be awesome:c it's not like the api is not available because vulcan is cross platform and fast.so was opengl! and many game engines!
Bruno Bandeira so far, with normal linux distributions, some games have better frame rates under linux compared to windows just due to the fact it uses openGL but it comes down to how well its optimized. valve said themselves that they got better frame rates under linux out of a few months of porting L4D to linux over the several years of directX optimization. this could also be due to the fact that linux requires almost no system resources to run where windows has a bit of overhead.
Shuchit Sharingan dude... you can allways download the drivers and install them manually. go get your hands dirty. put up a post showing us how to install it.
So essentially the potential is there, however certainly not there yet. Personally I really don't see many PC Gamers migrating from Windows any time soon, at least if Microsoft doesn't do anything too stupid with Windows 10.
Nightstalker Gaming To be honest, if I didn't need Windows for a large portion of what I do, I would have already switched to Linux. Unfortunately, I need dat Windows. :(
Neonemerld Same some things don't work on Linux for me even under WINE, or PlayOnLinux, but I do run LinuxMint XFCE 17.1 64bit on the computer in my guest room as it's only ever used for browsing the web, video streaming, and light office work by my elder mother who I care for, and for that purpose it works really really well.
Commodorefan64 Yeah, I love using Linux for simple things like that. I have Ubuntu running on an old Netbook that's so low-powered it couldn't even handle Windows 7 Starter (the OS it came pre-installed with).

WayZHC What? So you rather buy and support inferior products in the name of competition? You can have fun with that. Linux has 1% market share on computers, we have beenhearing this idea of Linux taking over for years. Not happening.
WayZHC Still using Windows. People who support Linux always bring up a strawman arguments by bringing up things that don't even apply to the conversation like how big Linux is on servers or Android. Stay on topic. If you want to use Linux have fun, but many won't and probably never will on desktop. I prefer Windows and so do many people.

SteamOS is just an alternative to Windows. As we have seen in the past, Microsoft doesn't really care much for Steam. It's good for them as a business to have an alternative to turn to if needed. I don't know of any actual perks that the OS has over Windows. The only thing I would think is that it probably allocates a larger portion of its resources to actual games than the OS running the the background (seems lighter than Windows)
I built a steam machine with an AMD A8-6600k APU, Nvidia GTX 750Ti 2Gb graphics card, 8gb Ram with a 120 SSD and 1TB HDD. I have to say it performs better than my Windows PC and is now my preferred gaming machine for the games which are compatible. I hope Steam continue this as it so clearly outperforms windows from what I have seen, I just wish it had easier access to office for documents and spreadsheets etc

I don't get it. PC version of L4D2 has a Xbox 360 controller support, but you have to use developer console commands. Why SteamOS doesn't have this already like the console edition?
The real question is: does steam os based games run better on the same hardware than on windows? Cause you can get the same UI and everything AND windows on the same machine simply by clicking full screen mode on steam.
What I think about SteamOS? Get an Ubuntu, Debian or Linux Mint and install Steam client on it. Also can run Wine and play some windows games with PlayOnLinux (POL for short).
I hear most Steam games run better on a Windows PC than on a Steam Machine, but that was back in 2013. So how's the optimization now? On another note, I can see the benefit of Steam OS *IF* you are on a very tight budget, so tight you can't afford a GPU, so an AMD APU or Intel Integrated Graphics here, and you only want to play easy to run indie games or anything 2D.
Austin I know you won't see this comment but I love your videos!!!! They are so helpful you opened me up to PC's... I thank you for your video's always being there and keep on posting... Some good things do come to an end but this GREAT thing will never end! Keep it up Austin Evans!!!!

Steam machines have a lot of potential. More and more games are supporting controllers and at the moment there are more split screen titles on PC then something like a console. SteamOS is great if you want a pure console experience without the added cost of pricey games and an internet subscription. While we are still comparing to consoles we can look at value a bit more. Seeming as though all consoles (at the 400-500 dollar range) are under performing and really not worth it SteamOS is a great way to slowly get into PC gaming and get used to some of the gaming perks that we have.
I think its a very good option for people going from a console to a PC, but you would be crazy to trade a Windows gaming PC for a Steam Machine. But it would be good for a PC gamer because its portable so you don't have to carry around your whole rig.
Could one expect better frame rates on steamOS? The only game I play regularly is CS:GO, just wondering if I'd benefit at all by playing it on SOS. Also, what about game recording? Is there an easy to use, viable option?
Jacob Koehler Yes, definitely on CS:GO. For game recording you can use a lot of different programs like OBS, SimpleScreenRecorder, and VLC. SteamOS is made to be easy to use as a gaming-only system, but if you want to completely replace Windows there are some other Linux distributions that can be used with Steam and are very straight-forward to use. Mint, ElementaryOS, Ubuntu, Fedora, OpenSUSE, and Manjaro to name a few.
Already built one... Really worth it as a first PC build mine for 100$ Flat all from amazon... Great for a home theater pc for playing tf2 and stuff with a PS2 controller but not that practical for gaming. If you do build one, just remember to backup your stuff and install Windows. Its so much better but if you want to test run benchmarks and such before you have enough money ect for a nice OS, then just get steamos. My opinion, Its worth it because the pc can be upgraded are endlessly.
I think SteamOS is the way forward but it will be interesting to see if people want the cheaper Steam Machines, which may be equivalent performance to a console - or, to get a "proper" gaming PC spec machine and run SteamOS to get the full benefit of gaming on a PC...
Is it worth wiping my old laptop and installing steamOS just for streaming? It has 4GB of ram and an Intel Family chipset. I find I can stream on windows steam but it can get a bit laggy. If I installed steamOS instead, would that improve the streaming experience due to less background applications?
I think Steam Machines are for PC gamers who want to do the odd bit of gaming in the living room, and want an easier, more polished, more console like way of doing it than using steam on windows in big picture mode. Big Picture mode is good but it's not perfect, there are even guides online to turn windows into something resembling SteamOS (having the computer start straight into big picture mode for example) but it isn't polished and you can often have issues apparently, however SteamOS wont have these issues because its built for the purpose of being a console. It could replace your PC/Console, but it isn't really supposed too (nor would many recommend doing it). As for lack of games, there are over 1000 for Linux on steam now (I think) and new games continue to come out with support, as well as more popular older games getting ported too. Nowhere near as many game as windows, but there is a decent amount, and as I said this isn't a replacement for the PC, just an easier too use but more limited companion for the living room.
I think Steam Machines are a great idea, if pulled off correctly. It isn't a console or a PC, it's a console-shaped box that plays PC games. It's a bit of both, and that can work for some people.
The New Alienware Steam Machine coming this November is priced at $449 which includes the steam controller. You wouldn't be able to build one yourself with that price with the same specs. It would cost a lot more and let's consider the small, compact and sleek design as well. Your better off buying it and upgrading the hardware later on or save up more money and buy the higher end models like Zotac or Asus with better hardware but that defeats the purpose of a gaming console. No one wants to spend that much.
Austin can i ask you a question. What do you think of a palit gtx 980ti reference design. Its the only card in stock in my country and its cheaper than the rest and comes with a free copy of arkham knight. Ive only ever used msi ega and asus and i dont know if there any real difference in getting a palit version. Id love to know what you think.
How to make a Steam Machine Step 1: Have a cardboard box ready Step 2: Have a hot shower for 5-10 mins Step 3: Capture all the steam you can get before it evaporates Step 4: Quickly tape box with duct or shipping tape Step 5: Get a sharpie and write Steam Machine Step 6: Print out a picture of the Steam logo and also a picture of our gaming god Gaben Newell Step 7: List all of the the games that doesn't have a third sequel of a Valve game Step 8: Wait 3 days Step 9: Gaben should come to you and give you a Steam $100 gift card Step 10: Log into Steam and buy all you want Step 11: Enjoy your stay
Hello Austin! Can you maybe make a PC Build for the next gen games like The Divison, Fallout 4, and Uncharted 4 (E3 Games) that can run at playable framerates? Not a monster build but something that doesn't cause major lag spikes in games like the one I have now :P
Whenever I get another 512 GB SSD (later this year), I will make a dual bootable machine with SteamOS and Windows. The only thing I am worried about is supporting my triple monitors with steamOS.
I'm planning to build a PC soon to game on, but I'm going to have to wait on getting Windows for a bit. So can I unistall Steam OS when I purchase Windows?
So what do you guys think about SteamOS and Steam Machines?
Let me sniff you Austin
Austin Evans I just want more games that run on linux
I like the idea of something open source that actually works
Austin Evans I think it has the potential to be big but needs to get more of the AAA titles available also really needs support from EA etc which I doubt will ever happen.

No, steam machines run alternative to windows

2.when official it will be optimized for steam
Also not console it runs real games

Sauron On a Steam Machine, you'll want to have as much free disk space as possible. Gotta leave room for the games.

I think the only main advantage of SteamOS over Windows is that you don't need much maintenance and antivirus. Only updates and that's it.

Hey Austin, this is guys. Can you install Wine in the linux desktop envoirnment?
Gaming on Linux is better than ever! Now on oct 2020 Steam Play (proton) make easy the task to configure windows games for Linux
Do you have to install amd/nvidia drivers or does it come pre-installed?
Is there a gain in performance if compared to windows?
Drivers come preinstalled and it's a bit tricky to test performance on SteamOS right now.

I don't get it.
PC version of L4D2 has a Xbox 360 controller support, but you have to use developer console commands. Why SteamOS doesn't have this already like the console edition?
Windows 10 and then a function to boot direct into steam big picture for console use.
You have a full windows and simply can do anything if needed
The real question is: does steam os based games run better on the same hardware than on windows? Cause you can get the same UI and everything AND windows on the same machine simply by clicking full screen mode on steam.
I made my console PC with WMC in windows 7 and modify the menu to show my games, now i can launch movies, series, music and games.
How would this pc be for editing videos? (my budget is around $600-$700

Any advice or suggestions would be loved :)
Amazing Video Austin! :D
I think its a very good option for people going from a console to a PC, but you would be crazy to trade a Windows gaming PC for a Steam Machine. But it would be good for a PC gamer because its portable so you don't have to carry around your whole rig.
Which leyboard is the one shown at 0:52?
Hey Austin Evans have you noticed if any games on steam os run at a higher frame rate than the windows version?
Jacob Koehler I don't think there'd be any significant performance benefit for CS:GO.

Well then you'd be wrong: www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/2hex11/csgo_linux_vs_wine_vs_windows_7_performance/
Falcon Games Interesting. I'm still skeptical, but that's interesting.

this guy was using Arch so it should be pretty light, although he was using KDE which is a pretty big memory hog.
My opinion, Its worth it because the pc can be upgraded are endlessly.
there is not big use of steam OS when you can get same interface if you want in big picture mode
I think SteamOS is the way forward but it will be interesting to see if people want the cheaper Steam Machines, which may be equivalent performance to a console - or, to get a "proper" gaming PC spec machine and run SteamOS to get the full benefit of gaming on a PC...
"Batman: Arkham Knight is just around the corner" Oh the hype back then!
Why did you choose to stream Shadow of Mordor and CS:GO from Windows ? They are both available on Steam OS.
Could you do steam machine build videos on a specified budget like you already do with Windows PCs?
No 4K?..
Yayy
"Hey Guys, This Is Austin" is back
Can you check out the cyber vapor when it comes out its fully upgradable. One modle has a titan x...
1:22 wow Austin looks hella pissed
Austin, what do you think of Windows 10? Have you reserved your free upgrade?
Austin Evans 02:57 are you prepin for a song on the next video
Might be worth allocating some 7200 hdd space for steam os to see if there are any advantages/disadvantages. Duel boot in other words 😊
The alienware alpha steam machine. Does it support Microsoft powerpoint and word? And how good is it at gaming?
How to make a Steam Machine
Step 1: Have a cardboard box ready
Step 2: Have a hot shower for 5-10 mins
Step 3: Capture all the steam you can get before it evaporates
Step 4: Quickly tape box with duct or shipping tape
Step 5: Get a sharpie and write Steam Machine
Step 6: Print out a picture of the Steam logo and also a picture of our gaming god Gaben Newell
Step 7: List all of the the games that doesn't have a third sequel of a Valve game
Step 8: Wait 3 days
Step 9: Gaben should come to you and give you a Steam $100 gift card
Step 10: Log into Steam and buy all you want
Step 11: Enjoy your stay
Hello Austin! Can you maybe make a PC Build for the next gen games like The Divison, Fallout 4, and Uncharted 4 (E3 Games) that can run at playable framerates? Not a monster build but something that doesn't cause major lag spikes in games like the one I have now :P
Whenever I get another 512 GB SSD (later this year), I will make a dual bootable machine with SteamOS and Windows. The only thing I am worried about is supporting my triple monitors with steamOS.
Awesome video. Keep up the great work!
Are you limited to the games on steam on this OS? or can you play whatever?
Can someone explain why you would install steam OS in the first place? Seems like it only has deficits to using any other OS.
I'm planning to build a PC soon to game on, but I'm going to have to wait on getting Windows for a bit. So can I unistall Steam OS when I purchase Windows?
