I was referred to this video from a soap making group on Facebook. Looking around, now I'm subscribed and can't get enough. I'm a DIY kid in a candy store. Thank you so much for all of it!
Thanks Uncle John! I was wondering why my crystals weren't dissolving😂 Looks like I'm making that menthol soap tommorrow after they've had time to dissolve..
I had actually just been preparing to make a beer shampoo bar with Menthol crystals, tea tree and Eucalyptus.I definitely buying when I microwave my Menthol crystals in the oil that I just do it in a 30 sec then 15 sec burst. Seems to be that the Menthol heats up before the outside Oils.Thank you for another great video. Super glad I saw this
I have just bought some menthol and was researching on how to use it when I spotted this video. 4%, in shaving soap. I reckon I could use 5% of I don't use this soap on my face? Thanks for sharing
Hi sir jon...what if i make 5,000 to 10,000grams of Essential oil, how many grams of menthol crystal do i need to add to have 3 or 5% solutions of menthol?
Yep! But be warned!!! This stuff is going to be very come and possibly an irritant. I usually do my dilution at 5% Then add to my soaps. So however much fragrance or essential oils with 5% menthol crystals added (by weight) then added to my soaps at approx 1oz per pound of soap. Hope that helps.
Depends on how strong you want it to be. I try to stay around 5%. So, take your essential oil weight and multiply it times 0.05 to get the weight of the menthol crystals. So.. 5000 (essential oils) X 0.05 = 250 grabs of menthol crystals. Now you have your dilution for your base oils. Warning! This is going to be felt on this soon and could be an irritant. Test it out in a small batch first so you know how it's going to feel before committing to a large batch.
@@unclejonssoap thank you so much for answering me sir...now i know how to mix my dilutions..i really appreciate your help sir. Thank you so much again. God bless
If you make the solution the way I made it, it's then just like any other fragrance. So, just look up how much fragr6to use in melt and pour. I think it's still roughly one ounce per pound of base.
So nethol crystal u can make cold process soaps as u said to dissolved into some of the oils what is that soap used for I know menthol crystal soak in bay rum great for joints pains etc
You can make a bath soap or a shave soap this way. Some people like the way the menthol helps the skin feel either cool or warm depending on the concentration of menthol you would use. In a shaving soap, it seems to help sooth the skin after shaving.
You can store it in some plastics. I'm just not sure which. I would be careful using equal parts menthol and mint. The menthol could be too strong for most products.
Uncle Jon's no worries. I'm used to it. When I'd go to Japan they couldn't pronounce my name right ever. In fact, there was never a hotel reservation for Monty Fox. But there was always a hotel room for Marty Fax! Lol
If it's really soft like a cream soap, then you could mix up a menthol solution and mix it in that way. Otherwise, I would just start adding it to the next batch.
I want to make a facial toner with a base of apple cider. *Would the crystals diisolve to form oily menthol droplets? If so, is there a natural way of solubilizing the oil without the use of polysorbate 20?*
Honestly I'm not sure. I don't know how the vinegar would work with the crystals. Also, poly 20 doesn't seem to hold anything together particularly well alone. Sorry I couldn't be more help
I really miss your videos Uncle John, (I know you're not my uncle but idk what else to call ya😂) anyway please come back to the tuubes! 😂 Hope everything's just going great with the business and your life in your neck of the woods too.
I would think so since it's used in perfumes as well. I would just figure out a way to make it into liquid form first so it blends in the soap easier. And start with smaller amounts because it can be very strong. Have fun!
They would dissolve in let water for sure. But, two things... 1- Dissolving the crystals is more about time not temperature. I would either dissolve them in a little water or fragrance to make your solution and add that to your oils. 2- The high temps of the lye water might be too volatile for the menthol and make it less effective. In most cases, the crystals will dissolve in a day in your solution. Mine take a little longer because I'm doing it in essential oils.
I would try backing down to about 1-1.5%. and people with very sensitive skin probably can't handle any amount. Did you dissolve the crystals in a solution of fragrance or anything first?
Hmm.. which bottle? If you mean the one I was making the menthol solution in, that is peppermint essential oil, eucalyptus essential oil, and then I added the menthol crystals. I just save a few of my older fragrance oil bottles and use them to make new scents for custom batches. Hope that helps.
Ok.. Just went back and checked the video. The fluid that was already in the bottle was some of the menthol solution that was already made. I was just making more to top off the bottle for the demonstration. 😁
This was awesome, thank you for sharing this. I'm a menthol fiend, lol, and like to add menthol to my aftershaves and witch hazel. Do you have any advice on adding the crystals to witch hazel? I've tried diluting them in 90% alcohol prior to putting it in that witch hazel, but the crystals still reformed. It worked better than my 1st attempt of just adding the crushed crystals, which didn't work so well, specially after the weather started getting colder
Menthol dissolves well I’m propylene glycol. Play around with the ratio. In aftershave and witch hazel, the propylene glycol shouldn’t have any negative effects
If i dilute with essential oils. And i want to use 3% of menthol. Wouldnt that solution (menthol diluted in essential oil) affects my essential oil measurements. Should i adjust my essential oil percentage then.
That's something you have to figure out about to the essential oil / fragrance supplier with that usage rate. Then you have to figure out the usage rate for menthol crystals by themselves per pound of base oils. It's going to be different for each person and each type of soap. Unfortunately there's no one size fits all answer.
Thanks Jon, video played fine by the way and your last DBAJ is fine now too. RUclips issue for sure! Have you ever use caffeine? I figure it's a gimmick, don't think you're going to feel it at all.
I don't intentionally use caffeine in any products because it really doesn't help with most. The one product it does seem to have some promise in is lotions. When applied to the skin, caffeine can temporarily tighten skin and reduce some minor wrinkles. That's about the extent of it though.. Lol. Glad the videos are playing better now 😁
Just what I was looking for. I'm one of those guys that likes way too much menthol in his shave soap. Anyway, I have one question (maybe I just missed it in the video). The bottle you added the essential oils and menthol to already had a liquid in it. What was that liquid? Thanks.
That was the same solution itself from earlier. I was just adding to it. I never fill the bottle all the way up so I can just mix the proper ratios into the existing bottle 😁
Vera Wol I haven't tried adding it to the lye so I'm not sure. But I would prefer to make the menthol into a solution before hand to make sure all the crystals dissolved. Then add it just like adding fragrances to soap.
I haven't. It's going to take some experimentation for sure. And start with less. You can always increase if wanted. But too much can be very irritating.
@@unclejonssoap Okay, I'm going to make a solution similar to the one you did and just add a little of it to my body wash base like I'm just adding the essential oils. Hopefully that works lol
Faenheight. The brown bottle has mint and eucalyptus essential oils. I add the menthol crystals to that to make the solution. You can also dissolve in water.
So, the liquid that was in the bottle was sitting that was left over from before. The final solution is made from the menthol crystals added to peppermint and eucalyptus essential oils.

@@unclejonssoap Hi Jon. Apparently there is such a thing as synthetic menthol. According to the (limited) research I did online, it appears that there are two main methods of synthesis. However, not only is the process more cost effective, but also results in a "more pure" menthol. Of course for those who would really care about this, it might be more important what the X% of impurity is actually made up of, naturally-derived vs. synthetic. Personally I suspect the water people drink on a regular basis is probably much worse.

That should have said Lye water.
Hmm.. good question. I'm not sure honestly. I've never thought about that or tried it. Maybe that's something I can experiment with.
Hi Uncle Jon, I literally just started my soap and have the paste set aside (for a day), is it too late to add menthol? Can I add some another way?

Do you think the cristals would dissolve in freshly made lye water, or does it not get hot enough??
They would dissolve in let water for sure. But, two things... 1- Dissolving the crystals is more about time not temperature. I would either dissolve them in a little water or fragrance to make your solution and add that to your oils. 2- The high temps of the lye water might be too volatile for the menthol and make it less effective. I used 2.5% crystals ppo in soap. People described it as being 'strong'. What percentage is tolerable for people with very sensitive skin?
I would try backing down to about 1-1.5%. and people with very sensitive skin probably can't handle any amount. Did you dissolve the crystals in a solution of fragrance or anything first?
If menthol crystals are concentrated mint, why not skip the crystals and just ad more essential oil?
Because the concentration is so.. well, concentrated, that you would have to add way more mint than the product will hold.
Hi..what was the initial fluid in the bottle? was it carrier oil or water. Great video, thank you

If i dilute with essential oils. And i want to use 3% of menthol. Wouldnt that solution (menthol diluted in essential oil) affects my essential oil measurements. Should i adjust my essential oil percentage then.
You would need to decide how you're using each before you start. Adding crystals to essential oils really doesn't dilute the EO as much as you think.
Is the percentage of menthol 3% of the oils in the recipe or 3% of the total soap weight?
oh nm, you addressed this question lol. I made a 2.5% mentholated soap and it wasn't very minty for me. I will try 3% next time.
Just want to know the ratio of clay in 800g toilet soap
I would say about 2-3 tablespoons. Not sure if the weight though.
so how much of the diluted solution do you add to a batch of soap?
