I'm saving for one. It's expensive and heavy BUT they don't fall down and it's a lot safer to put up by myself than the nylon tents. Which, you wouldn't think so because they're lighter but that means they move until they're stable. If I get tired halfway with this one, I can sit down. If I wear out halfway with the nylon tents I have to fight back tears that come with knowing it was all for nothing because everything in a heap has to be put up again.
That was the best video I have seen regarding setup of this @springbar tent. I’ve been researching several canvas tents but have never seen the full setup before. CheapRVLiving recently showed this tent and gave a lot of detail. As an older, but physically fit, woman, I wanted to see another woman set this tent up. I’m a mostly solo camper so that is of great importance to me. I had narrowed my choices down to two different systems, but with this demonstration I believe I have made my decision. Thanks. I am strategizing about using a tarp to move it around on the ground rather than having to lift it--and letting one side at a time drop down onto the tarp from my cargo carrier on the back of the SUV. I have had rib injuries this year and just lifting the bag a few times to test out carrying it had some unpleasant after effects. But maybe these workarounds would solve that. Once in the place I want to set it up, it looks manageable so I am glad to hear you would have no problem with set up on your own.
I found Kodiak before Springbar and just wanted to say I have had 4 Kodiak tents in several sizes. I have never had a leak and have been using them for about 8 years. But I will say I only use mine about 4 times a year for a few days (weekend warrior). I would like to try a Springbar though because I have a tent thing :)
Yes, me as well. I have way to many tents. The Classic Jack 140 has so many benefits and add on's. I have the 140 and the Winnerwell Nomad View Large along with the secondary combustion chamber. I also have two kodiaks but the springbar is clearly much better made. Kodiak touts its much thicker floor but you can get a 10 x 14 20 mil poly tarp for about $22 right now to go under the tent. I also use a 10 x 14 16 oz floor liner from Chicago canvas inside the tent. Additional items to consider are the stormfly and snow load kit and portico pannels that affix to the side of the awning. I don't believe kodiak offers any of those items for its flex bow line. One of the problems with these tents (flex bow) is water accumulation on the awning during rain. That is why I have a problem with the kodiak vestibules that use the awning. The Stormfly will solve these problems. Kodiak does offer the VX line of flex bow tents that have large mesh windows on the ends. It is better for hot humid climates like anywhere east of Oklahoma City but Springbars don't have large side windows except for the Classic Jack 140. Also not covered in detail was the massive zip in heat shield for the stove which I think is among the safest designs anywhere. Except for the Classic Jack 140 which can go anywhere, the springbar is more of a western tent line and the kodiak is better suited for the east as far as the VX line goes. Kodiak also makes other tents like cabin tents and truck tents that springbar does not make. I will say that I did leave up two earlier kodiaks for long term use and they both failed around the bottom border near the stake loop. For long term (6 months or more) use at a fixed location I would get a wall tent on a platform with a poly or heavy canvas tarp over it for sun protection. Where these tents shine over all others is a unique combination of ease of set up and tear down, wind resistance, stove option, standing room, and comfort. They are excellent for over landing, fishing or hunting trips, where a short term camp (3 to 7 days) or a little more is desired. Its is especially true if a relocation is required or possible and you still would like all of the unique benefits. By the way you can get water and dust tight carts from Dewalt which will hold the tent and can easily move it from the truck or trailer to the set up location. For overnights or two days I use the Kodiak 6 x 8.5 vx tent and put and MSR tarp over it. Generally full classic jack 140 is two much work for over night or for very short term camp.
I know the instructions say the grommets go on the pole but it just didn't work for my highline 6. I did it your way and perfection! Thanks for your video.
About 2 hours ago I ordered the classic jack 100. I’m excited about getting it even tho I have a teardrop camper that I have to tow around but am looking to go west this next winter and decided to go with the classic jack because of all the positive reviews and videos I have seen about them.
@jessem6124 yeah I don’t know either but I bought me a rain fly also to help protect the canvas. I know right now and I think it ends in a couple days that if you buy two items you get a third one free. So I bought the tent and rainfly and got the ground tarp free. $85 savings. The ground tarp is very heavy duty. You can just tell the difference in just touching it. I think I’m going to go camping in it in a couple weeks as soon as our rainy season lightens up here in Ohio
A very SOLID TENT!! 😀This is by far, the BEST VIDEO showing the set up of the Springbar Classic Jack 140 tent!!! The explanation of the "how" and "why" is very detailed. I have this Springbar Classic Jack 140 tent, and setting up the second UPRIGHT pole is the most difficult, but as an old guy, I was able to barely get the second upright set up. Best to have two people to set up the second upright. Set it up and took it down five times. Rain is always happening. I use a ground cloth, very nice from Springbar !! Also I HAVE rain fly from Springbar and I have also used the rain fly EVERY time the tent is set up, as it always rains at least once for several hours. Best to install the rain fly when setting up the tent, which is not shown on any videos I have reviewed so far. Also use it (always) as a hot tent with approved Springbar equipment and it's nice and toasty inside!! Highly recommended for four season camping, and my favorite is late fall and winter camping with few bugs and ticks.

Here is a stake tip for you. Purchase some long lag bolts 10"-18",some flat washers and a cordless drill with appropriate socket to fit the head of the lag bolt. Lay your tent out and then screw the lag bolts into the stake pockets with your cordless drill. No more hammering and speeds set up / take down time!! I'm the second owner of a 10 X 14 Springbar (MADE IN AMERICA) tent that's 35+ years old and still in great condition! Great job explaining the set up and quality of a Springbar tent!
Very nice video. I have a Springbar Highline 6 and have been using it all summer for 2 seasons now. I set a Gazelle Gazebo opposite to the tent door and connect the two with the tent awning. A couple of RV mats are used as flooring and ground cover as they do not retain water. The new rainfly will be added soon.
i bought a 1970 Coleman tent for $3 at a yard sale..no joke..i have used it at drive-in lakeside camps in northern Minnesota.it held up very well during a couple very bad thunderstorms but i had water weeping thru in two corners.i used Starbrite WPing and rolled it on.next month back up north and i'll see how that worked.the clips that adjust the end pole were a real hassle to get into place so i just drilled the pole at the right height and put a bolt in permanently,they fit in the loaded car just fine and i don't have to fool around with them for the set up.

I have a Traveler myself, and it came with the steel V-shaped stakes, which relegates me to putting the grommets on the awning pole guy ropes on the pole itself, not on the stake end. I believe this is how the system was designed. Anyway, here’s wishing you many years of enjoyment from your Springbar tent!
Hi, I have the Family Camper with the same stakes. What I do is slide the stake on the loop then hammer it in. This way it gets to a certain point and turns to fit the steel loop perfectly!

I just watched a Springbar video on their site and noticed something interesting. Instead of putting the vertical poles on the side at full extension, they say to put it on the lowest extension - do each side, then extend them to create the tension needed. That would make it much easier. I think I might be more able to do this than struggling to force the fully extended poles into position. 😁
Yes, these days I put them in at the lowest extension for some models and part way up for others. Extending them while in place sounds like a good idea, but I haven't found it possible when they are under tension- the pressure is so great that I can't even push in the button much less raise the pole up further. there is no mechanical advantage doing it that way whereas when putting the pole into place you've got lever action working for you.

@@SuzanneWho yes, that certainly would be very helpful. And it does take some force to get it up, but I feel confident my 80 year mother could do it. I guess it depends how active you are and what kind of senior you are😉. Sounds like you camp by yourself so I'm guessing you are strong and resilient. If you aren't by yourself perhaps you could ask for help! It is only the two uprights you'd need assistance with. Also, you don't have to get the poles completely vertical, who I makes it easier, but if you don't get it all the way in you'll want to tie the pole to the bottom loop to make sure stable. Threading some parachute cord through the bottom loop them tying or off to the pole worke well. Remember to use my name WONIYA for a 10% discount if you do get one!

Great point about stake angle! Figured that out by trial and error. May I suggest you buy the super heavy duty ground cloth from Springbar for your tent? Will add years of trouble free life to the floor of your house. I have a Family Camper 7. Love that thing. Cheers.
I have a question for you that means a lot to me. I purchased a Springbar and haven't set it up yet. I know I will love this tent. But, once I got the package and felt how very heavy it is, I am quite concerned I will struggle too much with picking up the tent bag and maneuvering it for transport and to the spot I set it up. Would you be able to handle this tent without your assistant? thanks!
Great question. They are definitely bulky and heavy, but I almost alway move it myself with no assistance. I'm pretty strong, so it really depends on you and your body. I pulled it up a big hill for some winter camping in November. Sled or wagons might be helpful for you depending on your strength and where you'd be setting it up. Glad you got a Springbar and I hope you love it!
I think this is the perfect tent for the maximum stay at a single location in national forrests, BLM lands and most state parks of 14 days. Earlier I said below it was best for 3 to 7 days but on second thought the longer two week stay is perfect. The wall tent option would be for elaborate hunt camps left up for 2 or 3 months or other long term wilderness or outdoor use. Those type arrangements (wall tents) should be on a platform where possible with a sun/rain tarp overhead to extend the life of the canvas. These tents will break down if left outside for extended use unless on a platform with sun and rain protection.
I think that's the first time I've ever seen a coherent set-up video on those big tents. I've always wondered about the hassle factor with the civil-war design. That pack roll also looks a lot more manageable, like, if you put it on a sled, ATV etc. .. Someday I'll make the jump . I'm just a humble bike camper right now , in a nylon North Face two man , which I do love , but having that WHITE color would be so awesome when it's raining and I'm camping for longer time with a stove and some guitar hippies. No, i still love it and think it's a great design. It even got some significant snow in Arizona last year! I did have a mishap with it this spring where a metal part of the roof tension pole caught on the roof as I put the tension on and it tore a hole in the roof. It was an easy fox though with some canvas and barge cement and I haven't had problem with it since. I am careful now to make sure there is no food in the cloth caught before applying the tension to the roof!
@@wensmith6752 You might want to wait, actually. There is a new model coming out soon that will be even better- a redesign with more interior space but the same footprint, also set up for stove but made in the US while this model is made overseas.

I'm curious do these get too heavy to move, if you don't get the larger sized ones? And it seems like a catch 22 situation because if you use it a lot you'd want the bigger one, which would be heavier also... Some of these larger canvas tents when bagged will weight between 50 to 120 pounds... What do you think about this? I'm curious at what wind speed would you start to have trouble with these also?
they are heavy, but I always carry the canvas and poles separately which break up the weight. I am not very big, only 5' 4", but have never had a problem carrying the 10x14 tent on my own
Yes, that is how I usually do it. Getting the uprights into position takes some strength but is very doable. Usually takes me 15 minutes or less. It's a wonderful design. They have a new model coming out soon with the same footprint but more interior room.

The stakes your'e using are horrible at best! Get the triangle type, they're much better. Also, my Family Camper came with a HD ground cloth. You should inquire as to why yours didn't? Great vidyo!
Thank you- the ground cloths generally come separate but occasionally they come with during special promotions (one like that is happening in November!). After putting this one up for the first time I ordered the ground cloth to protect the bottom and have been much happier with that system. These are the stake this model can with but I have a newer model now, the Skyliner, and it came with the very stakes you mention- so yup, we are on the same page all around!

The black tab on the guy lines goes over the top of the pole with the rivet on the canvas between the two tabs. Great tents!

Hope you think about the Springbar tent. There's a 10x10 and a 10x14 that can be uses as a hot tent. Keep the Queen's Corgi always by your side!

Have you seen the suggestion that some people have been doing with an impact driver and tent stakes that screw into the ground?

Extending them while in place sounds like a good idea, but I haven't found it possible when they are under tension- the pressure is so great that I can't even push in the button much less raise the pole up further. there is no mechanical advantage doing it that way whereas when putting the pole into place you've got lever action working for you.
@@BuckskinRevolution That’s a point they didn’t make. I understand what you’re saying. I’m looking at the ClassicJack 10X10. I wish I knew someone close by who owned one so I could try to put the tent up. I’m a senior, so wondering if I can do it.

@@SuzanneWho yes, that certainly would be very helpful. And it does take some force to get it up, but I feel confident my 80 year mother could do it. I guess it depends how active you are and what kind of senior you are😉. Sounds like you camp by yourself so I'm guessing you are strong and resilient. If you aren't by yourself perhaps you could ask for help! It is only the two uprights you'd need assistance with. Also, you don't have to get the poles completely vertical, who I makes it easier, but if you don't get it all the way in you'll want to tie the pole to the bottom loop to make sure stable. Threading some parachute cord through the bottom loop them tying or off to the pole worke well. Remember to use my name WONIYA for a 10% discount if you do get one!

Great point about stake angle! Figured that out by trial and error. May I suggest you buy the super heavy duty ground cloth from Springbar for your tent? Will add years of trouble free life to the floor of your house. I have a Family Camper 7. Love that thing. Cheers.

I have a question for you that means a lot to me. I purchased a Springbar and haven't set it up yet. I know I will love this tent. But, once I got the package and felt how very heavy it is, I am quite concerned I will struggle too much with picking up the tent bag and maneuvering it for transport and to the spot I set it up. Would you be able to handle this tent without your assistant? thanks!
Great question. They are definitely bulky and heavy, but I almost alway move it myself with no assistance. I'm pretty strong, so it really depends on you and your body. I pulled it up a big hill for some winter camping in November. Sled or wagons might be helpful for you depending on your strength and where you'd be setting it up. Glad you got a Springbar and I hope you love it!
I think this is the perfect tent for the maximum stay at a single location in national forrests, BLM lands and most state parks of 14 days. Earlier I said below it was best for 3 to 7 days but on second thought the longer two week stay is perfect. The wall tent option would be for elaborate hunt camps left up for 2 or 3 months or other long term wilderness or outdoor use. Those type arrangements (wall tents) should be on a platform where possible with a sun/rain tarp overhead to extend the life of the canvas. These tents will break down if left outside for extended use unless on a platform with sun and rain protection.
I think that's the first time I've ever seen a coherent set-up video on those big tents. I've always wondered about the hassle factor with the civil-war design. That pack roll also looks a lot more manageable, like, if you put it on a sled, ATV etc. .. Someday I'll make the jump . I'm just a humble bike camper right now , in a nylon North Face two man , which I do love , but having that WHITE color would be so awesome when it's raining and I'm camping for longer time with a stove and some guitar hippies. Oh and the stitching issue always drives me nuts . I'm now sold on this concept, thanks so much. :) Oh you forgot to put the tent MFG's site link .

No, i still love it and think it's a great design. It even got some significant snow in Arizona last year! I did have a mishap with it this spring where a metal part of the roof tension pole caught on the roof as I put the tension on and it tore a hole in the roof. It was an easy fox though with some canvas and barge cement and I haven't had problem with it since. I am careful now to make sure there is no food in the cloth caught before applying the tension to the roof!

I'm curious do these get too heavy to move, if you don't get the larger sized ones? And it seems like a catch 22 situation because if you use it a lot you'd want the bigger one, which would be heavier also...
Some of these larger canvas tents when bagged will weight between 50 to 120 pounds...
What do you think about this?
I'm curious at what wind speed would you start to have trouble with these also?
they are heavy, but I always carry the canvas and poles separately which break up the weight. I am not very big, only 5' 4", but have never had a problem carrying the 10x14 tent on my own

Yes, that is how I usually do it. Getting the uprights into position takes some strength but is very doable. Usually takes me 15 minutes or less. It's a wonderful design. They have a new model coming out soon with the same footprint but more interior room.

Thank you- the ground cloths generally come separate but occasionally they come with during special promotions (one like that is happening in November!). After putting this one up for the first time I ordered the ground cloth to protect the bottom and have been much happier with that system. These are the stake this model can with but I have a newer model now, the Skyliner, and it came with the very stakes you mention- so yup, we are on the same page all around!

@@markchearino6806 I love it- the same footprint as my classic jack 140 but way more interior space (thanks to a larger roof and more vertical walls, and the new stove jack insert system is a big improvement- less of the heavy fire resistant cloth and Velcro instead of zippers.
