I love that you mentioned Buck Perry back in the mid 70s a fishing buddy and I started reading Bucks main book and worked on catching his way. Great fun Frank
This was fantastic. I've been thinking that I should set up an ultra-light rig and have it in my arsenal at all times for when the bite is slow. This was exactly what I needed to see to make up my mind. Nicely done, Justin!
Today was my first outing with my ultra light rig, very similar to what you are running in this video (2lb test, gulp minnows, trout jig head). It made for a great day. The bass weren't biting, but my new rig was slaying the blue gills and crappie. Super fun! Thanks again for the great info and video!
Fishing with 2 Lb test is living on the edge.......😁 But you can land a large fish with it though. I landed a 19 Lb Carp while fishing for Crappie with a 1/64 ounce jig on 8 Lb test, it's all in the drag and a properly tied knot. Fishing with an ultralight reel and light line is a lot of fun and hearing that drag squeal is an added bonus. Thanks for sharing the video.
Just got my first kayak about 3 weeks ago. Definitely intend to set up for primarily catfish, but have been anxious to pull in ANYTHING as my first catch in the boat! I watched this video Tuesday, went down to the local private pond that evening with a similar minniw-tyoe jig and promptly pulled in my first fish in the yak! (A disappointingly small bluegill, but a fish nonetheless). Needless to say I'm now a subscriber! Thanks for your videos
Nice to see you smile hooking up with the bait fish. I agree it's loads of fun. Back in my early days I remember using live bait. Just thinking how much time spent baiting up maybe 20seconds per cast and going through 2 or 3 dz min. Add up the time. More time baiting than fishing. You have the best way.. Jigs.
I've never used them, I've always used wax worms with slip bobber rig to catch bluegill for live bait. But honestly I may have to give this a try! Good informative video Justin.
Great video and great tips.....I learned some helpful ones today. I’m going to get me some specimen cups to soak some Trout Magnets in.....never even occurred to me. I never would use any of the Gulp attractant before because it always leaked. Most folks don’t realize how important it is to keep that lure on as straight as you can get it. Spot on about the rod.
what size st.croix panfish series rod is that? I've been looking at the 6ft ultralight, but can't make up my mind they seem a little whipy but then again I still want to cast the trout magnets haha
@@KayakCatfish Any noticeable pro's and cons of it that you've seen from your time on the water with it? if you don't mind me picking your brain before I spend the $$$
I have been using it for a few years and have no complaints. It is a nice rod for the money. If you want a high end ultralight rod, you may want to check out the JDM rods. Those are the best ultralight rods available. The troutmagnetman RUclips channel is a great resource if you are interested in those.
I'm a big fan of TroutMagnetMan's channel. Have you ever tried the Crappie magnet lures and jigs? They are slightly bigger than the trout magnet lures so they seem to cut out all the tiny little fish that hit the regular trout magnet. If not, might want to give them a try at some point. They make the shad dart jigs for crappie magnet lures too.
Fun, fast fishing! Always appreciate your tips! Last night I got to try a little punch bait fishing under a float. The action wasn't fast and furious, but I did get a couple of dink cats, and I eventually fooled a 5-pounder, which was really fun!
Beautiful scenery. Some call the bluegill, some call them supper. I usually call them bait. I wonder how much editing was needed while you got your jig out of the trees. Falls under SH for shouldn't happen. Thanks for the video Justin. Interesting, informative and down to earth.
Thanks Tom! It usually doesn’t take me long to edit the clips where I get hung in trees. There are usually so many curse words used that I just have to cut the entire clip lol.
I tried braid once but didn’t do too well on it. I would have probably done better if I had added a flourocarbon leader to the braid. I caught the drum on the 1” gulp minnow. They were a fun fight on the ultralight.
@@KayakCatfish when I switched to braid for whites and hybrids years ago my catch rate went down. I put two lines side by side with spoons the only difference being the braid and mono and holding them maybe 3 ft apart and jigging them in unison the mono out fished the braid by a noticeable amount. Also spent one night crappie fishing with minnows and 4 and 6 lb mono side by side and the 4 lb did much better. Never tried 2 lb but guess will have to. You convinced me.
Using the pedal drive and no graph! Man, you really were "roughing it" that day! I'm on such an ultralight kick, right now myself. Wish we had more smallies around here. Only a few lakes in SC have them and a couple of our rivers.

I told her because I knew she loved big perch, so I would catch about 50 or so, and give them to needy family's on my way home. By the time I got home, I would have about 10 left. Have fun! Hope you catch a bunch.
A day on the river using only two pound line. The fish were a biting and everything was fine. Then he heard someone yelling, coming around the river bend.He saw it was Panfish Bill ,and feared it was his end. What are you doing here, your fishing in my spot.Justin hung his head in shame, knowing he,d been caught. He thought real quick and answered Bill with a very witty reply.I was hoping that I meet you here, but that was a big fat lie.Why would you want to see me ,this is my spot you must surely know.Justin replied I need some pointer,s and trick,s ,that only you could show.So Panfish Bill smiled, and replied in a voice so sweet.Said, it surely must have been fate that our path,s today should meet.So Panfish Bill took him under his wing and taught him all he knew. Now Justin cant wait to try out his tactic,s,and catch a state record blue..............................No charge for this Justin................Your the gulp minnow champion hand,s down.
Haha!!! Unlike Billy's videos, your poems never disappoint. You have missed your calling in life as a hallmark card writer.
I'm adding this set up to my outfit! Thanks! I don't like live bait either.
Hope it works out well for you. Thanks for watching!
