I actually really like the Sonic Comics. I need to pick them back up again. I used to read them on and off in the 90's, and I tried again a few years ago, but I need to go back pretty far to catch up entirely.

That's what I was thinking, and Sonic 06 is non-canon so her and Silver have no connection, last I checked Silver is from Sonic's future and Blaze is from a different dimension entirely, unless Silver can travel through entire dimensions
perhaps when she sacrificed herself at the end of Silver's story she was transported to the Rush dimension, apparently she does mention something about taking Ibis to another dimension, maybe this is how she got her powers? Idk
I can say one thing for sure.
Ian Flynn is a great writer. And the Sonic Archie comics have been amazing since the crossover and post-genesis wave.

Sonic Universe was good. But it has improved a lot since post gen in my opinion.
***** Ken Penders was a garbage writer that made so many unnecessary characters and has a overbearing Echidna fetish and he inserted Lara Su which I honestly couldn't stand.
To me Flynn is one of the most talented writers in AGES. He actually knows who the characters are and what to focus on, has good pacing in the writing too. Sure he can get characterizations off, but I don't see the hate.
At least he knows what he is doing and not making it a cringy glorified fanfic like some of Penders' and Fullop's writings.

Surprised that you mentioned Sonic Universe without mentioning the main comics. They exist in the same continuity and the whole point of Universe is to show what side characters are doing when they're not in the regular series.
But they kinda rebooted it. Where they are like "reborn" but keeping their old memories because SEGA was like "Sonic doesn't have a GF" it's also tied to the cross MM series. I think.

Wasn't implying Boom wasn't selling well. What I meant was that Archie didn't have enough money to publish 3 new books in addition to what they were already printing, so they canceled/put on "hiatus" extraneous comics so they could afford to pay for the new Archie series.

IMO, Archie didn't ruin or mess up the Sonic lore - they took all of the disjointed threads, tied them together, and made the best Sonic storyline of all time out of 'em. There's no bad voice acting, terrible graphics, out-of-place design choices, or strange plot decisions (usually) to ruin it; it's just a fun time with tons of characters, actual character development, awesome stories, numerous engaging settings, and at the top of it all a fantastic creative team. Not to mention that existing threads aside, there are a ton of new elements and twists brought to the universe through the writers, creating a unique experience unlike any other.
The Archie comics are my favorite form of Sonic media to date because they take what modern Sonic is and make something awesome out of that.

Tbh, I don't even know why Archie isn't in charge of SEGA at this point...
I understand that it's hard to adjust to an adaptation that's very different from what you're used to, but some fans seem very closed minded on anything in Archie that also isn't in the games. People complain about the focus on original characters, well no shit, do you realize how long the comic's been running, and how small the game's cast was when it first started publication? Of course there's going to be more characters.
I once saw one guy say that one of the changes he'd make is to remove Mighty and Ray from the Chaotix, saying "They don't fit." Ray I can understand, but in the comics, Mighty has ALWAYS been part of the Chaotix, and he actually has a clear role as the strongest guy. The only reason I can think of for saying that he doesn't fit is "Because he's not a member in the current game canon". Similarly, some people seem to hate Sally not because of how she's written, but simply because she's not Amy.

I'm a close-minded person but the Sonic franchise is where I am most open-minded. I'm probably one of the most open-minded fans ever. I tend to hate characters people love and love characters people hate. It's odd.

Blaze first showed up in the game Sonic Rush. Which was released in 2005.
On the same day as Shadow the Hedgehog. Which was November 15th.
And for some reason they changed her lore in 06.
(probably because not many people knew of Rush back then and even still not many people do from what I've seen so far)

The Sonic Universe comics take place during the Sonic the Hedgehog comics, so it might get confusing, since you're meant to alternate between them as the series goes on. This was basically just an excuse to produce two Sonic comics per month.

Smash I got into the comics via Sonic Universe, using only what I know about the games to help me understand things. It worked out well. you can stick to Sonic Universe if you want but you'll eventually get temporarily bored of it and then start wanting to see the main story.
They're the sonic comics that focus on everyone but sonic, and it's great
Sticks is great in the Mega Man crossover. So are Comedy Chimp and Fastidious Beaver, oddly enough. Also, the crossover actually spanned the main Sonic comics, Sonic Universe, the Sonic Boom Comics AND the Mega Man comics.
I really, REALLY loved the Sonic comics.
The stories were actually pretty interesting. They could be a lot more serious than the games.
I'm sad that they've stopped making them.

If anyone wants a good place to pick up the sonic comics, read the ones that are after the first mega man cross over (worlds collide) it has a sort of reboot there and that's where things get really good
Long time Archie Sonic comic fan here. The Sonic comic series has been going for well over a decade and originally followed on from the amazing Sonic SatAM cartoon. The stories started simple but grew into such an epic story with a massive scale and was immediately obvious that it was the BEST version of Sonic out there.I was surprised you talked so much about Sonic Universe without ojce mentioning the main series (with almost 300 issues). Universe is a spin-off of the main series with side stories or background stories outside of the main series narrative. I loved this comic series up until the Mega-Man crossover where they COMPLETELY retconned the whole comic world and essentially started from scratch, meaning that the previous decade of 250 issues and all these big trials and events fans had waiting a couple of years to be resolved were all thrown out the window! I couldn't believe they did that and could never enjoy the continuing series because it wasn't the same world or characters I had loved for 8 years.Just thought you should know, cheers for reading this history lesson.

I haven't read much of the Archie Sonic Comics since issue #125 through 178. I guess I stopped caring about it ever since the crossover happened with Mega Man. But I did manage to read the Boom Comics and in my opinion, were a lot better in handling humor, action and character interaction than in the show.
But you know, that's me.
I'm actually okay with Knuckles redesign, because I feel it's more reminiscent of the "Strong, Stupid" character. Watching through Sonic Boom, he actually made me laugh whenever he did something stupid, so, as controversial as it is, I think he made a great Knuckles.

I gotta say it was awesome seeing you cover this topic, I've been following the Archie Sonic Comics since way back in 2004 and I've been reading Sonic Universe since it's inception, so It's great to see it get a bit of love and exposure from you here ^_^
Also, in case you're wondering, it's likely the "Drama" that surrounds the comics actually has less to do with the comics themselves compared to the games, but the fact that in the main Sonic the Hedgehog comics (the issues that Sonic Universe are a spin-off of) there was a soft reboot of the series right in the middle of a big story arc due to some legal troubles Archie was experiencing. But I mean, if all you want is a great story featuring the characters of Sonic's world, then it doesn't matter that much. Sonic Universe is the place to find it =)
... also I love the fact that your desktop background is Sonic dragging Silver across the ground by his hair. I can't imagine cardboard cutout of silver likes that very much XP

Did you know that Sonic Universe is actually a spin-off of a main comic series called "Sonic the Hedgehog", which has been running since 1993? I do think that Universe is better though, since the main series varies way too much in quality. And don't get me started on Ken Panders!
Paintamaster2000 is in the main series separated by hundred markers? you got Sonic the Hedgehog, the Sonic 100 series and then Sonic 200 series. currently we're in Sonic 200 and that's pretty good.

Weird shit going on there. If you aren't aware, this is the second Megaman crossover. There was the new one, and the thinly-veiled series reboot. Before the chronological first one, the comics were as dark and moody as the Megaman ones still are (and it actually worked, surprisingly). Sonic got rebooted back into glorified video-game merch form, and apparently Megaman was unaffected.

after reading through the majority of what the reboot offers, it doesn't seem like it's glorified video game merch. the comics were forced to be rebooted due to legal reasons for by a slimy former writer. so the first thing they do in the reboot is try to use Sonic The World Adventure (aka Unleashed) to flesh out the new world and present new plot threads to work off of in the future, which is probably why Sonic's own adventure feels a bit rushed while everything else, such as Silver's new future or the dellema of the Pronghorn sisters, feels fleshed out enough to build upon by the time the the new plotline in February kicks off with the freedom fighters breaking up on good terms.

I honestly like the comic more the way it is now. Ian Flynn's writing really shines, now that he's not limited to the more edgy old version of the world that Ken Penders established. Not to mention, the new comics can still get pretty dark at times.
And the best part about it is that the new world is just like the world of the games (I didn't like the setting and history of Mobius because it changed so much from the games).

If I remember correctly, in one of the japanese manga continuities, Sonic is an experiment gone wrong, Crash Bandicoot style, which *kinda* makes Eggman his dad.

I wouldn't recommend Worlds Unite. It started out promising then quickly plummeted into something very terrible. Also Shadow only got 2 panels in the whole thing.
Sonic Universe is amazing. I just adore the Shadow Saga, Silver Saga, Treasure Team Tango, The Scourge Saga is great too, and both Eggman Arcs, and the Tails' Arc adapting Tails' Adventure. Most of the Arcs Pre-Reboot are pretty great. Now the Post Reboot Arcs started off weak and progressively got better and are now starting to get into that great territory again with Eggman's Dozen and Shattered. I also review Sonic Universe Comics whenever they release. But Sonic Universe is great. With The Shadow Saga (#1-4) being the very best the comics have ever done.
World Unite was an over abundance of crossovers, that honestly was way too much. The first few issues were actually interesting with the whole Sonic man and Mega man man(?) thing. But then it had some hope with how the worlds were intertwined. But it is never used, and instead we get like two issues of the characters finding all these Capcom and Sega characters to take on this fight. I wish it did more
As much as I like the comics, I'm still super upset with what Sonic Boom has done to Knuckles.
He went from being a tribal guardian of a hidden power who was smart in his own way (in the Sonic Riders games he translates some pretty ancient text from a lost ruin granted Riders is technically a spinoff series, but still) to a meathead who can hardly tell left from right without using that hands trick we learn in kindergarten.
I like this new LootCrate bit. It's a great way to make "selling out" seem more fun and interesting than just tagging a quick "BUY THIS SO I GET MONEY!" onto the end of a video.
One of the reasons the comics are more appealing is you can replace the god awful shitty voice acting with whatever you personally think each character should sound like. That, and it's written by people who actually know dialogue writing unlike most of the writers of the sonic games.
That's just my opinion anyway.
I didn't know Sonic had a Megaman cross-over in the comics, my younger 12 year old self would've been fan-girling like crazy.

It's so refreshing to hear someone use the name "Archie" as a sign of quality. So often in videoes are the mere existence of the Archie comics used as a punch line, with people acting like the entire thing is creepy stupid weirdness, I even saw one video which did mention Ian Flynn's work of improving the comic, but he strongly implied Fkynn came in at the tail end, right before it ended, igoring the entire 10 years that he and countless others worked on that book.
It often feels like to gaming fans Sonic is a little more than a joke, and to Sonic fans the comics are little more than a joke.
I must say, great job in actually finding a way to make me want to watch a lootcrate unboxing. "The Quest for Relevancy" is really great idea.
A few details that need fixing: Blaze was introduced in Sonic Rush which was shortly BEFORE Sonic 06(plus 06 erases itself), so she always was/is from another Dimension. Sonic Universe was meant to PRIMARILY expand the events of the Archie Sonic Comics canon, not the games(at the very least, before the comic got rebooted). For example, Shadow teleported away during a battle with Sonic's evil doppelganger Scourge. The SU issue where he meets Blaze and Marine show us WHERE he teleported to from that battle. Finally, Sonic Boom became a Mega Man crossover thanks to a special event that involved ALL the Sonic comic series; the main book, SU, and SB(it was actually the Second Mega Man/Sonic crossover in the comics)
Blaze first appeared in Sonic Rush which not only came out about a year before Sonic 06, but also established that she was from a different dimension.

Ex-Archie-writer Ken Penders sued SEGA for using his characters (that he wrote for their comics), so Archie reset the storyline, removing most of the characters that were created solely in the comics during Ken Penders' time writing for them. Many fans are upset, because they lost their favorite characters from before the reset. Like my favorite, Shard the Metal Sonic.

Actually Blaze in Sonic Rush (2005) is from the Sol Dimension. Sonic 06 is a retcon of that, making Blaze a defender of her future, before SEGA retconned the game, reverting everything back to the old canon in Sonic Rush Adventure (2007). So Blaze is still a princess from the Sol dimension with her Tails-esque companion Marine as of 2016.

And what makes no sence, is that a member of Sonic Team confirmed, that Blazes world isn't in Silvers timeline and that this game is not canon and we shouldn't take the background of Blaze in Silvers timeline, not as her canon story. I remember that.
But why on earth, did they put Blaze in front of the broken city in Sonic Generation and make her remember that, even the whole 06 story didn't happen? it makes no sence and they ruined by themselfes, Blazes Story with that.
Sonic 2017 has to do with time travel i heard. Again. The third Sonic game with time travel... I hope, they don't put Blaze from Sol Universe, in Silvers timeline and create only for Silver, a new character. A friend, or a female friend who life in his time and is his buddy. Just for let Blaze rest in piece.

I don't know why they did that. Sonic doesn't have very good continuity after the first 2 adventure games. Not to mention that they dabbled with Time Travel and that is something that can really screw up a story if done wrong (and most of the time, it is done wrong).

I love the Mega Man and Sonic comics! The crossover was epic, although there were 2, and the better one was the first, with no Sonic a Boom in it. But still, as a trained professional in the art of explaining things, I’ll explain the Mega Man comics to you. In the beginning it was pretty standard, but it still diverged from the plot of the games quite often, which I like. When they finished the Mega Man 2 adaptation, they broke off into more character development before launching into an adaptation of the Japanese-exclusive Super Adventure Rockman, in which it does get darker and grittier, before lighting up for the Mega Man 3 adaptation. After Mega Man 3, there was more character development and setup for Mega Man 4 before the series entered a hiatus which it still hasn’t gotten out of. Thanks for your time, if that brief summary sounded interesting, then go buy them on the Kindle store or something.

Great video. The comics are great these days. The new "reboot" just called Sonic the Hedgehog is nice as well. There are soon 4 GNs out so you can easily catch up on the story. I REALLY recommend this one. For instance it doesn't ship Sonic with either Sally or Amy on SEGA's suggestion so that leaves some imagination for the reader. Maybe they don't want Sonic to have any girlfriend which means you're free to ignore Amy's ever going lusting after Sonic. Yes she still likes him but that's not where the focus is. Amy even gets kind of her own moments where she makes new friends and Sonic has his part of the story arc when they aren't all working together.
Many original characters are added as well as characters from Unleashed, yes that's the game the story is based on. But Sonic wont turn into a werehog right away the change is slow and it's kinda interesting to see how Sonic deals with it. It would've been so cool if this was what the story in Unleashed was. More or less.
I wish SEGA would use more of their own characters in the games even if you can't play as them. That would be nice because right now they aren't used for anything. Sonic games can have a decent story if they'd just get the right people on it. That said, games like Sonic Mania where you just play levels are nice too. I'm looking forward to both new games. I wish for once I could say I'm a proud Sonic fan been playing Sonic since what? 93? He just means a lot to me.
The only problem is that I live in Colorado and have never seen an ad for any sonic comics. Should I go to archies website or is it canceled? And if so, I would be counfused with the story.

Also, I use to draw comics where ninja turtle meet sonic; sense Archie comics did the comic series based on the 80's TMNT cartoon and made sonic comics based on the 90's Sonic: SAT AM series at the same time at one point: it never came to be, but it's a very missed opportunity.

Eggman as Sonic's dad... You haven't read the Fleetway Sonic. In that, the Doc is (kind of) the father of Sonic's classic/modern look. In Fleetway, Eggy used to be a kindly scientist by the name of Ovi Kintobor. He was trying to use Chaos Emeralds to siphon away all the evil in the world to create a utopia of bliss. Sonic met him and they became fast friends! At this time however, Sonic looked like an ordinary anthropomorphic brown hedgehog; at least until Kintobor used superscience and magic to create new sneakers for the brown blur to test the upper limits of his speed. Needless to say, Sonic broke the testing apparatus; and energy from the shoes somehow interacted with the hedgehog's body to give him the look we're familiar with. So, you could in a way say the doctor is 'a' father to Sonic! They certainly seemed to have that kind of relationship, before the evil-collecting device literally blew up in Kintobor's face, inverting the doc's personality and turning him into the evil robotic dictator, Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik.

I would have to disagree personally. I actually liked the story he wrote for Knuckles because it gave him more purpose then stand in front of an easily steal able gem every second of every day. And honestly Dimitri-Enerjak was probably my favorite villain from that comic. But I'm guessing you're referring to the lawsuit problems.

Ken has written some interesting dialogue in select games (though I can safely say that's the only thing interesting about his writing), but even then, Ian just blows anything he could write out of the water.
