    In biology there's a rule - Form Follows Function. We can use this rule to look at the form of shark tails and guess their function!
    Specifically, unequal (heterocercal) tails are better for slow patrols of a coral reef, and equal (homocercal) tails are better for long-distance migrations in the open ocean. And then there's a spectrum of tails between those two that support different mixed lifestyles!
    I hope this teaches you something useful about sharks!

    Wow so cool ✨🦈
    So does that mean that fish with flowy flexible tails are more for slow movement?

    • @BioBush
      @BioBush  Год назад +2

      Hi Viomursarda! In general, yes. More flexibility gives freedom of movement, but sacrifices speed and efficiency. This is true across many different groups, even comparing seal flippers (flexible) to dolphin flippers (rigid). It's a small piece of knowledge that can change how you look at animals! Thank you for watching!

    Ah, very nice! Enjoyed the nifty take on the tails pertaining to swim type. Also, nice shot of you in the intro!

      Hi Koaw! Thank you! There are topics like this where a little bit of knowledge gives a new mental tool, and those are so fun to find and share. That picture was from a toy drive where you could take a picture with Santa underwater by donating. Santa had to leave for a minute, so they took some solo pictures. I have another set with Santa too. :)

    I initially subscribed to your channel to learn more about birds, and so far I've watched / enjoyed a lot of your videos! Seeing you doing a video on my favorite animal though is a real surprise :) wouldn't mind to see more ocean biology content in the future.
    All the best!

      Hey, thanks Ultrakento! The original plan for the channel was to make about 50 videos about birds, then move on to other groups of animals. It turns out birds are REALLY interesting, and they will still be in the majority of videos this year. But I actually studied Marine Biology, and am looking forward to having ocean creatures in the mix. I'm glad that you are excited as well! Thank you for watching!

    Why do sharks swim with the top fin above water?

    I've developed a strong interest in sharks recently, so that was pretty cool to know

      Hi Marco! That's great timing, then. I'll be branching out into other animal groups regularly this year (still mostly birds) and ocean creatures are so interesting. Nothing else shark planned at the moment, but I'm sure we'll get back to them. Thanks for watching!

      @@BioBush Great, I love all animals and learning more about them! My all time favorites a whales, so I'm sure you'll have more cool facts, if you want to talk about ocean animals.

    When you said you were trying some orther taxa, I actually thought, oh fish tails are interesting

      They are! I'm doing another one on vines later this year. There are just so many bird video ideas out there! I expected to make 50 and move on, but the more you learn, the more unanswered questions there are!

    Interesting departure from your usual bird-related content! By the way, do you have this year’s schedule of videos?

    • @BioBush
      @BioBush  Год назад

      Thanks, Vernon! My initial plan with the channel was to make 50 bird videos and then move on to other animals. It turns out birds are a very good topic, so I'm sticking with them for most videos. But there are other animal groups where a little knowledge can yield surprising insight into how they function. I intend to do one a month. And yes, I will send the schedule to you. Thanks for watching!

    This is a really cool trick Steve, I find it fascinating that so much about an animal's biology can be deciphered if you know what to look for! I appreciate these videos that delve into new waters (pun intended) on your channel, and I look forward to learning about more different kinds of life in the future!

      Thank you, Harrison and Evan! Most videos will feature birds this year, but yeah, there are many situations where a little bit of knowledge unlocks a new way to see animals. Those are the subjects I'd like to include in the mix this year. Thanks for watching!
