In this video I break down the likely second most important basketball shooting technique development of the past decade - the low set point (behind only early release timing). I focus on the reason why a low set point puts your arm and shoulder in optimal positions to transfer power to the ball during the pushing phase of the shot. If you haven't guessed it, I'm a proponent of players, especially smaller (below 6'5'') wings and guards, utilizing the low set point to maximize their basketball shooting range. The basic principles do, however, transfer to larger players too.

Lebron has been hitting deep 3s lately, does that correlate to his hairline?
HAhahaa :D
🤣
He is missing 10 times for make a one
Well LeBron is stronger than any of us will ever be soooo
@@onursiralitas Did you have a stroke towards the end of your sentence
You said the hairline right above the head on purpose lmao 😂 I’m weakkkk
One thing that should be mentioned is a lot of the small guards with low set points in the nba don't really shoot midrange shots. It is hard to have a midrange game when you shoot one motion with a low set point because things are much more congested within the 3 point line. Steph Curry is a perfect example. When he gets inside 15 feet he will almost always shoot a floater rather than shoot a jumpshot.
I have personally struggled with this because I've always been an excellent shooter (2 motion, eye level set point) and seeing the new wave of nba guards made me want to change my shot to emulate them so that's what I did. It did give me better range and I could hit very deep shots with pretty good consistency but the rest of my game suffered. So eventually I switched back and it honestly feels much better (for me).
All this to say I don't think that shooting one motion with a low set point is universally better for smaller players, I think it really depends on how you play.
Just do both fam. When shooting a jump shot, I release higher and a little bit later as well as having slightly less arch. Then I just do the opposite from 3
I have multiple shots XD, my 3 is a high arc unblockable 1 motion shot like curry, and when contested from mid I hang in the air with the ball on top of my forehead, but yeah is kinda hard to come off a screen and shoot a one motion mid, so I do mostly floaters
I just emulate what Kyrie does. From long 2/three point range and beyond, he has pretty much the same set point as Steph curry. He releases the ball a bit slower but that’s because he elevates slower and gets into his shooting motion slower for more consistency. But he also has a killer midrange game. Why is that so? That’s because in the midrange he puts the ball above his head and will often fadeaway or lean to buy space/time. That’s the optimal way to have range and not sacrifice your midrange game at the same time.
@@hussainshahabuddin1423Kyrie is so skilled, it's crazy
same dude i cant shoot midrange at all i just have no control over it so i have to.change my shot during midrange
High set points are better for midrange because the energy for ur jump does not transfer into the shot, so it doesn’t overpower it. Low set points are great for long range because the energy from the driving force of the jump is transferred directly to the shot kind of like a box using his left for a punch.
since my highschool days i've shot with a single motion from 3 point range and from mid always a 2 motion shot
Yea it’s hard to step right in someone face from 15 ft with a low release point. I have always done the same
@@jaydee2620 but this kind of shot isnt a good shot anyway which you should be taking .
lol right at the hairline and shows kobe and lebron
😂😂
So in other words he wants us to shoot like Larry Bird 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Just gave you 100 likes
Lebron's set point going higher each year with some occasional comebacks
He said “Lebrons sey point is around his hairline” so ur saying u want us to shoot from the back of our head?
mcdaddy Wild LMAO🤣
Underrated comment😆
Hahahahaha your so comedian
Thanks this was the one adjustment I needed because im 5’10 and used to have a high set point like Klay Thompson and ive been air balling and I didn’t know why but till I came across this video I tried lowering my set point like trae young and my shooting % has increased dramatically. I used to what shot mechanics but none of the videos worked. Thanks so much.
yes.. there's no videos that explain about lower set point shoot clearly like this. I'm 161 cm tall and i feel better with lower set point.
I'm Indonesian 😂🇮🇩🔥
Keep your high set point form just square your shoulders lock your elbows spread your fingers flick your wrist, pointer finger being the last finger to touch to ball
Same
@@devinhester5202 doesn’t have to be pointer
2:33 nah we aint finna slip pass that shot you fired at lebron😭😭
Awesome content, applied it immediately and has increased my range drastically, thank you!
BRO, LUKA DONCIC SHOOTING FORM BREAKDOWN 👀👀👀
Xylon Santos Theres no breakdown the man has a classic text book proper Jumpshot. I think with Luka it’s more innate ability that makes him knock down deep shots. But this dudes theory isn’t bad but “Logo range” can be attained is which ever way. It all depends on the shooter not the set point. Kobe, RayRay, Tmac, VC, Arenas, Harden & Luka all shoot with a High set point jumper and have deep range.
@@watchnofacee You're gonna have a realllyyy hard time having consistent logo range 3's with a high set point if you're 6 feet or under. Kobe, Ray Ray tmac etc etc all those were 6'4" or taller, they're big strong dudes. If you're 6 foot and skinny you should shoot 3's with single motion/low set point. That being Iverson had the same set point as kobe but iverson had crazy vert so he was able to generate mad power from his legs but yea he was more a mid range shooter and rarely ever shot threes from behind the 3 point line
Thanks for the video, I used to have a high set point and was really good at shooting contested shots and off balances threes, but my realease was slow ( this is why I took these difficult shots so I wouldn’t get blocked, I’m only 5’9). Then I changed my set point to a low set point, my shot is quicker, my ranged increased. So thanks a bunch
It’s so great having you make videos again, and I think it would be really cool if you make a video about shooting arcs if you haven’t already
Great to see you back and thanks for another informative video!
i really like your analyses on the mechanics of shooting. very accurate and well explained
This is the second vídeo I watch from your channel and I love how you analyze moves. We've been told our whole lives that our elbow needs to stand square for the shot, and none of these guys do that. Physics is important. Thank you.
I have to say it's really helpful. I adjusted mo shoot form like this video said and my 3 points improved.
SO GLAD YOURE BACK!!! Best basketball youtuber EVER!
Keep up the good work, Scot Shot Basketball!
You make dope videos man. Thank you
Thanks man now i can shoot threes since i must generate alot energy from extending my arm but now i dont need to thanks to you so my range accuracy increased
Great video! Emphasis a lot of technique which is very important and effective when learned at a young age. I'm a 42 year old recreational baller who has a high set point. But since I'm not gifted with strength to launch from deep, adjusting to a lower set point with a quick release will be very effective once mastered.
Great vid! I'm 12 and 5'6 and have a very high set point and could only hit base line three at most logo but must jump to my highest after i use this, i can hit base line three without jumping at all and can now hit logo with a normal jumper thanks for sharing this!
2:33 pic of Lebron lol. Great vid
Really nice vid. Well explained. Thanks heaps
Jaren Jackson is one of those guys who's a giant but has a low set-point and it looks really awkward. But like you say in the video, most of us are closer to Trae Young's bodytype which I agree with using a lower set point. Just thought it was interesting to point out JJJ's form.
I’ve been waiting for more videos :)))))
Great vid, I'll be working on my set point! Thanks!
My coach had this drill where you start behind the half court line and walk up to it and when you step on the line you shoot the ball without jumping it helps !!
Excellent video.
good analysis bro. thank u
Very good video! Thank you🔥
Thanks for the video
Could you do a Kevin Huerter shooting form breakdown please?
wow, spot on.
I realize I have many set point depends on the situation! This explain why I make my shot all the time🥳
Deserves more views and more likes nice job
Bro can you please do a video on like “the complete guide to making a jumpshot” or somthing
Great video, i have a deadly mid range but my 3s are pretty bad. Now i see why, thanks
Totally agree. I used to shoot with ball above my head and i cant shoot long range shot. After i changed my shooting setpoint lower, i able to shoot further
Great videos bro, I need a LaMelo Ball jumpshot video.
Amazing video.. i'm 6"0 and skinny and had eye level set point this summer, my shot was kinda slow and i could shoot amazing from mid range and i hit fadeaways and contested shots at a high rate... but my 3 point shot was awful.. barely hit them and it made my shot inconsistent.. now my set point is nose or almost mouth level and it feels fluid and consistent.. i shoot 3's with ease because i don't have to use as much power from my legs anymore.. the only downside is that my mid range game is off a little because i used to shoot contested shots but now i have to practice my shot speed rather than my elevation.. some say have 2 set points but i find it inconsistent.. in conclusion this video helped me understand that i shouldn't copy tall athletes' jumpshots because you should have your jumpshot constructed for YOUR BODY TYPE. I shot better this whole month better with a lower set point rather than those three months with a higher set point.. hopefully more people find this channel and subscribe because you break down shooting to a science!❤️✌️
A lower setpoint is suitable for long-range shots but not for mid-range jump shots. You should try to use different setpoint for different ranges.
@@matrixin1999 Pretty sure you still can hit mid range with low set point by your base mechanics, well that at least works for me.
Watch his video on why you need 2 different jumpshots.
Fitz Arc it's getting better but it takes time to get used to😄
This is 100% fax
Dope!! Thank u
I feel like it’s harder to change to a lower set point because my wingspan is too long, that’s why I shoot it above my head
gold. pure gold
Very well broken down
In addition to range, it can be argued that a lower set point also provides better ALIGNMENT due to being able to "see" the entire arm through to the basket - sort of like throwing darts.
Great video man, do you recommend having 2 jump shots, one midrange and one 3 point and beyond?
Also I feel a higher set point is more consistent because you have less motion which gives you less left to right movement. Its shorter movement which allows you too keep the ball on track and its more natural feeling. I use both a low to mid and high set point in my game. My 3’s are not the best but I can knock them down especially when they are uncontested, my midrange is excellent.
godddd this helps alot
Please make a video of were to look when shooting because i have a game soon and my my only way to be effective in games is shooting
Low set point shooters like Trae and Steph use their whole body’s momentum to shoot the ball long range. It’s not just the upper body mechanics, it’s the whole body that shoots the ball.
Thanks
You're right, nba players with low set point have no problem getting blocked because they get the shot off really quick, this is also why their shots are so effective from deep, by getting the shot off quick off the pass, you're actually transferring some of the energy/momentum from the pass into the shot, which helps tremendously.
He finally back
Legit information
1:00 Kobe ❤️🐍
At 6'2" 210 lbs I like to go for more on the top of the head while on mid range and lower a bit to the face level for three. In mid range I use my legs a bit more and from three I sort of only do a toe raise and let the power come from the arm.
Also I feel like letting the ball fully rest on your palm helps you have more control of the ball and therefore helping your shot.
This video honestly comes down to guards who are smaller and weaker should have lower set points and bigger guards/forwards should have higher set points due to strength etc
Can you please do a video how to effectively to readjust your shot after creating your shot and also how to properly sped up your shot to be able to handle contest better.
you might want to check out ILoveBasektballTV or ShotMechanics
Fantastic
Not going to lie I really loved this video
Can you do a head to toe of kemba walker pls?
I love ur channel so much
Hey! Please make a Big man/Dirk Nowitzki Jump shot breakdown thanks
This gives me hope I predict my height to be 6’1” of 6’0” wish me luck
goodluck bud
You'll be taller than Chris Paul
Do a vid on how to be a long range shooter with a two motion shot like : gilbert arenas etc..
I already knew this but i still watched it
What’s a video. Thanks man.
Hey,can u do a Derrick Rose new jumpshot breakdown video ?
That one will be good
You should have 2 jump shots, a higher set point in the mid range area and a lower from further out, higher set point means less range but you can shoot more contested so for mid range you don't need much power so a high set point will help in the mid range area
Can you do Jimmer Fredette shooting form breakdown please?
I'm trying it
could you explain more about the release? like which fingers the ball should come off of and where your fingers and hand should be facing in your follow through. also more depth into hand placement.
Ball should come off index finger or middle finger. Fingers and hand should obviously face the rim in a follow through. Hand placement is preference.
I’m a guard with a lower set point but I don’t really shoot threes.
i shoot in between 1 & 2 motion and I’m known for my good mid range shooting.
Same. I m 14 5’6 120 but also have a 6 foot wingspan
dang it, if only i knew this back in high school
Could you make a video about turning when you shoot? I know you’ve talked about it before but I think a full video about it could be real helpful, talking about the benefits and why people like J.J Redick and Steph Curry do it
Yes
Scot Shot Basketball thanks dude, you’re one of the best you tubers when it comes to basketball imo
So one thing I’m personally curious about Scot is the nature of Trae Young’s guide hand. I noticed that on his release he tucks in his thumb in a way that’s also different from how Steph does it. How does that influence his shot? I heard you talk about it in one of your videos but I still don’t fully understand the concept. Secondly, I noticed that his guide elbow flares to the side when he shoots, is that something that should be corrected?
i needa try this i have two different shooting form the one with my right which imo is perfect but has no range and ci cna only shoot from the midrange while my left arm is stronger but less consistent and i have no control or aim of where it but i can easily pull up from behind half court "ive been able to do that since 6th grade" but my right hand is much more consistent and has no power.
Just got back to watching your channel. What happened to the update video? I haven’t seen it and I’m curious
Can you speak about soft hand release?
yo where is that steph curry head to toe? thats gonna be ya best video ever
and my friend says my form is weird i do completely this and hit around 50% on 2/4 shots deep
I have set point like trae's but I always get blocked,, so where should I keep it now
What a time to be alive when theses videos are for free in the web. Thank you!
Nice
Such a cute angle
Please make a video about Luka Doncic shooting form
Kyrie shooting form break down please!!
I'm wondering how to speed up my jump shot, could you tell me?
Thanks for the video. My son is in the 8th grade and 14. He’s just under 6’1 and has always had an amazing shot. I tried to get him to raise his set point but it’s been a pain. He didn’t even shoot threes until a week before his 9the birthday. His mechanics were off so we went back inside. But during the 9 year old year he started shooting from about 26-30 feet and he was damn consistent. I coached him in AAU for a while until I got tired of the parents so he just played Rec league. But he’s always had stupid range. Like un real. I have range as well but at a certain point I max out. But how the hell was a 54 pound 9 year old pushing out shots from that deep while simultaneously struggling with 15 foot jump shots when we worked shooting at times. Dumbfounded. Sure he used a lot of energy for those shots but it’s not like he needed that for close shots. This is a kid that every shot he puts up looks like it’s going to drop. Typically they do. We’d go to put up some shots at a gym in Oakland called soldiertown. It’s where the big AAU squads play at. Sometimes you have nba players running and you have many top notch trainers. Which he’s worked with. Anyway we’d go in and work shooting and man, he got to a point pre Covid that people were paying attention because his shot was too damn good compared to many of the talented kids in there. No cap. That was at age 12. 500 makes from three with heavy movement. So he’s put in the work. Well yesterday after watching a video I found something in his shot mechanics that I thought might finally help raise his release point and DID IT FRKN EVER! He finally felt it as well. He said he’d never felt his shot that easy. It was truly a breakthrough and the shot was silk. He didn’t want to get too excited though. But we left out house to a nearby court and when I say this kid was shooting from everywhere and not missin… smh. Seriously 50ft 60ft and splashing. The smile wouldn’t quit. At one point he was at half court shooting the damn ball with the same ease any player uses from the free throw line. Half court was 35ft. I know not the standard size but still we are talking about 35 ft shots with the ease of free throws. Just under 6’1 without shoes and a 6’3 wingspan and only 120 pounds 😂😂😂😂 skinny as a rail and still growing. My point is tht low release point does definitely help but eventually you have to get a little lift and you need some great hand eye coordination. If I had his damn shot 😂😂😂😂 I definitely would have played past jco. One can only dream 🏀
Next video: Differences between Trae Young and Stephen Curry shooting form?
Alvin Bong Hui Min actually they are not shooting the ball they are pushing the ball
The difference is Curry’s goes in
Lance Stephenson Nah, they are shooting, it’s just more fluid.
Trae’s form does not look as good as Curry’s, it kinda looks like he’s just flicking the ball
@@psinformer1 trae still has good form tho
It depends also on the strength of your wrist to follow through.
Can u do a Paul George shot
6:07, precisely this. I would say for younger, developing players to look past the trends of today, because just like a cheetah evolves to chase down an antelope, eventually defence is going to come back into fashion and the arms race will cancel out the advantages of these short, low set-point guards. Constant 3 pointers is going to get stale eventually, and the rules will be changed to push the game back into the post to get back ratings. The big guys will rule again at some point, and the kid who developed the less blockable shot will have the advantage
No won't , you have naturally more space the farther you are able to shoot from which also stretches the defense. This means you can drive to the hoop more easily so there is no need to shoot from midrange .
Your savantish bro(not a word but yea)
Mimic Curry’s shot form and definitely the set point it’s just right that’s what you want, I’ve incorporated that into my game and once I did it’s I’m pulling up from the half court line no lie 😂😂 also little knee bending and shoot off your tip toes, one last tip tilt your feet the opposite direction from your shooting arm, soooo simple
Lefty, tilt to the right side
Righty,(me) tilt to the left side
Mimic the GREATEST SHOOTER EVVVVVER!!! 😉❤️
a have a med set point for deep threes and a high set point for midrange is that any good?
Man i wish youtube was around during my basketball days.
How about Joe Ingles set point?
Do a Pete Maravich shooting form
