One thing that should be mentioned is a lot of the small guards with low set points in the nba don't really shoot midrange shots. It is hard to have a midrange game when you shoot one motion with a low set point because things are much more congested within the 3 point line. Steph Curry is a perfect example. When he gets inside 15 feet he will almost always shoot a floater rather than shoot a jumpshot. I have personally struggled with this because I've always been an excellent shooter (2 motion, eye level set point) and seeing the new wave of nba guards made me want to change my shot to emulate them so that's what I did. It did give me better range and I could hit very deep shots with pretty good consistency but the rest of my game suffered. So eventually I switched back and it honestly feels much better (for me). All this to say I don't think that shooting one motion with a low set point is universally better for smaller players, I think it really depends on how you play.
Just do both fam. When shooting a jump shot, I release higher and a little bit later as well as having slightly less arch. Then I just do the opposite from 3
I have multiple shots XD, my 3 is a high arc unblockable 1 motion shot like curry, and when contested from mid I hang in the air with the ball on top of my forehead, but yeah is kinda hard to come off a screen and shoot a one motion mid, so I do mostly floaters
I just emulate what Kyrie does. From long 2/three point range and beyond, he has pretty much the same set point as Steph curry. He releases the ball a bit slower but that’s because he elevates slower and gets into his shooting motion slower for more consistency. But he also has a killer midrange game. Why is that so? That’s because in the midrange he puts the ball above his head and will often fadeaway or lean to buy space/time. That’s the optimal way to have range and not sacrifice your midrange game at the same time.
Thanks this was the one adjustment I needed because im 5’10 and used to have a high set point like Klay Thompson and ive been air balling and I didn’t know why but till I came across this video I tried lowering my set point like trae young and my shooting % has increased dramatically. I used to what shot mechanics but none of the videos worked. Thanks so much.
yes.. there's no videos that explain about lower set point shoot clearly like this. I'm 161 cm tall and i feel better with lower set point. I'm Indonesian 😂🇮🇩🔥
Keep your high set point form just square your shoulders lock your elbows spread your fingers flick your wrist, pointer finger being the last finger to touch to ball
High set points are better for midrange because the energy for ur jump does not transfer into the shot, so it doesn’t overpower it. Low set points are great for long range because the energy from the driving force of the jump is transferred directly to the shot kind of like a box using his left for a punch.
Thanks for the video, I used to have a high set point and was really good at shooting contested shots and off balances threes, but my realease was slow ( this is why I took these difficult shots so I wouldn’t get blocked, I’m only 5’9). Then I changed my set point to a low set point, my shot is quicker, my ranged increased. So thanks a bunch
This is the second vídeo I watch from your channel and I love how you analyze moves. We've been told our whole lives that our elbow needs to stand square for the shot, and none of these guys do that. Physics is important. Thank you.
My coach had this drill where you start behind the half court line and walk up to it and when you step on the line you shoot the ball without jumping it helps !!
Jaren Jackson is one of those guys who's a giant but has a low set-point and it looks really awkward. But like you say in the video, most of us are closer to Trae Young's bodytype which I agree with using a lower set point. Just thought it was interesting to point out JJJ's form.
Xylon Santos Theres no breakdown the man has a classic text book proper Jumpshot. I think with Luka it’s more innate ability that makes him knock down deep shots. But this dudes theory isn’t bad but “Logo range” can be attained is which ever way. It all depends on the shooter not the set point. Kobe, RayRay, Tmac, VC, Arenas, Harden & Luka all shoot with a High set point jumper and have deep range.
@@watchnofacee You're gonna have a realllyyy hard time having consistent logo range 3's with a high set point if you're 6 feet or under. Kobe, Ray Ray tmac etc etc all those were 6'4" or taller, they're big strong dudes. If you're 6 foot and skinny you should shoot 3's with single motion/low set point. That being Iverson had the same set point as kobe but iverson had crazy vert so he was able to generate mad power from his legs but yea he was more a mid range shooter and rarely ever shot threes from behind the 3 point line
Thanks man now i can shoot threes since i must generate alot energy from extending my arm but now i dont need to thanks to you so my range accuracy increased
Great video! Emphasis a lot of technique which is very important and effective when learned at a young age. I'm a 42 year old recreational baller who has a high set point. But since I'm not gifted with strength to launch from deep, adjusting to a lower set point with a quick release will be very effective once mastered.
In addition to range, it can be argued that a lower set point also provides better ALIGNMENT due to being able to "see" the entire arm through to the basket - sort of like throwing darts.
At 6'2" 210 lbs I like to go for more on the top of the head while on mid range and lower a bit to the face level for three. In mid range I use my legs a bit more and from three I sort of only do a toe raise and let the power come from the arm.
Low set point shooters like Trae and Steph use their whole body’s momentum to shoot the ball long range. It’s not just the upper body mechanics, it’s the whole body that shoots the ball.
You're right, nba players with low set point have no problem getting blocked because they get the shot off really quick, this is also why their shots are so effective from deep, by getting the shot off quick off the pass, you're actually transferring some of the energy/momentum from the pass into the shot, which helps tremendously.
Great vid! I'm 12 and 5'6 and have a very high set point and could only hit base line three at most logo but must jump to my highest after i use this, i can hit base line three without jumping at all and can now hit logo with a normal jumper thanks for sharing this!
Totally agree. I used to shoot with ball above my head and i cant shoot long range shot. After i changed my shooting setpoint lower, i able to shoot further
Amazing video.. i'm 6"0 and skinny and had eye level set point this summer, my shot was kinda slow and i could shoot amazing from mid range and i hit fadeaways and contested shots at a high rate... but my 3 point shot was awful.. barely hit them and it made my shot inconsistent.. now my set point is nose or almost mouth level and it feels fluid and consistent.. i shoot 3's with ease because i don't have to use as much power from my legs anymore.. the only downside is that my mid range game is off a little because i used to shoot contested shots but now i have to practice my shot speed rather than my elevation.. some say have 2 set points but i find it inconsistent.. in conclusion this video helped me understand that i shouldn't copy tall athletes' jumpshots because you should have your jumpshot constructed for YOUR BODY TYPE. I shot better this whole month better with a lower set point rather than those three months with a higher set point.. hopefully more people find this channel and subscribe because you break down shooting to a science!❤️✌️
This video honestly comes down to guards who are smaller and weaker should have lower set points and bigger guards/forwards should have higher set points due to strength etc
Also I feel a higher set point is more consistent because you have less motion which gives you less left to right movement. Its shorter movement which allows you too keep the ball on track and its more natural feeling. I use both a low to mid and high set point in my game. My 3’s are not the best but I can knock them down especially when they are uncontested, my midrange is excellent.
6:07, precisely this. I would say for younger, developing players to look past the trends of today, because just like a cheetah evolves to chase down an antelope, eventually defence is going to come back into fashion and the arms race will cancel out the advantages of these short, low set-point guards. Constant 3 pointers is going to get stale eventually, and the rules will be changed to push the game back into the post to get back ratings. The big guys will rule again at some point, and the kid who developed the less blockable shot will have the advantage
No won't , you have naturally more space the farther you are able to shoot from which also stretches the defense. This means you can drive to the hoop more easily so there is no need to shoot from midrange .
Can you please do a video how to effectively to readjust your shot after creating your shot and also how to properly sped up your shot to be able to handle contest better.
You should have 2 jump shots, a higher set point in the mid range area and a lower from further out, higher set point means less range but you can shoot more contested so for mid range you don't need much power so a high set point will help in the mid range area
Could you make a video about turning when you shoot? I know you’ve talked about it before but I think a full video about it could be real helpful, talking about the benefits and why people like J.J Redick and Steph Curry do it
could you explain more about the release? like which fingers the ball should come off of and where your fingers and hand should be facing in your follow through. also more depth into hand placement.
i needa try this i have two different shooting form the one with my right which imo is perfect but has no range and ci cna only shoot from the midrange while my left arm is stronger but less consistent and i have no control or aim of where it but i can easily pull up from behind half court "ive been able to do that since 6th grade" but my right hand is much more consistent and has no power.
This is peer facts because ever since the league changed to a shooting league I’ve learned to shoot from half court consistently by shooting with a low set point
