I recommend feeding a mouse with tweezers and after the snake latches on, keep tension with the tweezers while using a q-tip that has been wetted with warm water and removing the stuck shed with the other hand!

The tail tip stays on because they don't rub their tail on anything to remove it. I have a boa who has very poor shedding on her lower jaw and her tail tip.

My 8-year old male ball python always sheds imperfectly, like the one shown in your video. The top of the head, the sides and top of the neck always remain stuck on. But I raised a great baby, a rare gem. I sit with her wrapped around my arm and I gently mist the area with lukewarm water while stroking the dead skin. It just sits there, enjoying its spa day. It is not head shy and when it feels I have loosened a section of dead skin, it gently moves its body away while I hold the dead skin and it finishes the peeling for me. It's a collaborative process. Never has it tried to bite me. It knows the drill and I like to think it enjoys the procedure. We love our snake.

Thanks for the vid, even for a few years old, it was very helpful. I haven't had a snake in many years, my wife got me a Ball for Christmas. He ended up with mites and a severely stuck shed. Got the mites gone, and got his shed cleared up today. Never had to deal with one quite so bad before. You're right, a little stress up front is worth it, compared to a snake losing it's eyesight. It's less stress to help them, and my little Rafiki Nyoka actually helped me help him after he figured out what I was doing. Soaking alone wasn't doing it, and I was very reluctant to pull his shed off, but I think it was entirely justified, considering how happy he seems now. Just be very gentile! I've never had a snake let me handle his head in such a manner before, it was a unique experience.

I gripped the loose end and rubbed his belly till he pulled it off himself. As for the mites, I ended up using spray. I sprayed the cage down, all his stuff except water bowl, and I didn't wash the spray out like it was directed. I let it dry, then put him back in. No more mites. The brand I used was Miracle Care Reptile Spray. It's not the correct way to use it, but I was desperate, and it worked.

Usually she would never ever let me get close to her head, but she somehow knew I was trying to help her get the annoying shed off and was a real trooper. Quite the adrenaline rush and ordeal for me, the 15 minute soak I think definitely helped but wow I was super worried after reading about retained eye caps :(. The weather is changing and I think I have to go back to her coconut fiber mulch mix substrate in addition to paper towels to hold in her humidity more because omg I do n o t want to do that to her again. Tip- wet towel.
Soak a towel in warm water, wring it out some, place snake in towel for a couple of minutes, apply slight pressure and let snake slither through your hand in the towel. The roughness of the towel, along with warm humidity will peel that skin right off and there's less stress because the snake is in a dark place "hiding."
Note: always monitor your snake as you do this. You don't want to walk away and your snake slithers out of the towel and gets lost. :)

When I first got my ball python he had a horrible shed from his previous home. I let him soak for about 10 minutes then wrapped him into the middle of a towel so he could rub it off himself. For the extra shed stuck on the head I just rub it with a damp towel and he is totally chill with it

@@ccmmacaroon2696 yes I keep mine as a hobby too, (just not so many) and I get tons of joy from owning them and taking care of them but i have issues with attentiveness, organization, forgetfulness and just staying motivated, and I'm sure everyone struggles with similar things from time to time, including Alex, so I was wondering if he had tips on keeping a schedule and such with his care.

@@reptilesrequired4239 this reply is super late but i feel like my response could be helpful. i have ADHD so i constantly struggle with the issues you described and i am familiar with how it feels to love caring for my pets, but my disorder makes it very difficult at times.
i only have 1 ball python right now but to help me stay on top of her care i write down important info like when she last ate, shed, pooped, etc so i don't lose track of time between feedings and i don't forget any important info. i keep that next to her enclosure so it's always in the same spot and easily accessible
to stay motivated i try to follow a lot of reptile related things on social media and youtube, that way these things are showing up on my feeds a lot and seeing them often makes me feel motivated and i am always learning new stuff. if you have executive dysfunction like me, it can be really hard to just get up and do a thing like cleaning/feeding, but reminding myself that this animal is completely dependent on me usually helps me get over that enough to force myself
it can also be helpful to leave reminders for yourself like on your phone, post it notes around your room or house, to just keep your pets and their care on your mind. i love my snake dearly but due to my ADHD i can easily get distracted by another hobby and she just isn't on my mind, especially since she doesn't do much beside sit in her hides, so simply being reminded often that this animal exists and is under my care can help me a lot
i hope this helps, even if you don't have ADHD. just don't feel guilty, i used to feel guilty a lot because of my struggles but it's better to put that energy into providing the best care you can :)

something i forgot to add is that when you know you need to do a thing, but you feel really unmotivated, start with just getting yourself to stand up and walk to the enclosure. don't worry about the next step until you do that, just getting yourself moving without thinking of every single step at once can really help!

  • @melissaleigh9119
    @melissaleigh9119 5 лет назад +1

This is the first video you’ve made I don’t agree with. The water for a ball python should never be above 85°. Ideal is between 80-85 but starting at 85 is good because the water will start to cool down. You can sit the tub on a heat pad to help keep the water warm. 85° feels almost cool to us so you MUST use a temp gun to check. You should always put a hand towel in the water with the snake so it can slither through and get most of the shed off itself, leaving minimal stuck shed for you to remove. This way you don’t have to stress the snake any more than absolutely necessary. It’s also helpful to put a large object in the water such as a rock or cup for the snake to wrap its tail on and ground itself, making it more comfortable while in the water. For beginners dealing with eyecaps in general is a bad idea. They often can’t tell the difference between eye creases and eye caps. We don’t want beginner keepers trying to peel eye creases off! The best thing to do is keep your husbandry correct because a healthy shed will take care of eye caps and eye creases. You probably should explain the difference before giving the tape advice, that could be incredibly dangerous. Can’t wait for more Rosie content!

My first snake had a bit of stuck shed on her nose and stuck eyecaps. After a soak, I had good luck with using one of those microfiber screen cleaning cloths and dipping it in warm water so it was damp. She is head-shy so I just gently rubbed at the stuck parts and they came right off. I gave her a break between eyecaps.

Stuck shed really shouldn’t be common. I run a BP rescue and have never had the issue. If this is common for someone they need to fix their husbandry. Stuck shed on the tail is the equivalent of wearing the same ring from the time you’re a baby. It will cut off circulation.

My baby corn had an almost perfect shed. There was just a little stuck on her tail. I soaked her and tried peeling it off. She's so tiny and squirmy that I didn't want to hurt her so I left the smallest piece still on here in hopes the soak was good enough that she would rub against something and it would come off. I plan to give her a good soak before she sheds next time and maybe I'll even get a humid hide

I have a humidity box that I wet regularily, and not one time have I ever had a problem with stuck shed on my ball python. I've never had to soak her, or worry about trying to get stuck shed off her. Nor has she ever had any dehydration issues or scale rot issues because the rest of her enclosure is too humid or the substrate is too moist.

I help my pythons when needed by soaking them in a container like you did for 10- 15 minutes. But I put them in a pillowcase I soaked over in the warm water, tie the end & place it in the bathtub. In about 5 minutes untie the pillowcase & let them come out. Stubborn skin gone & I didn't force anything.

Ball pythons can be kept on aspen with no problems if you give them a humidity box!! I've had issues with scale rot keeping them on more tropical substrate. Yes they spend most of their time in humid termite mounds in the wild but the ground isn't wet in there. That's just my experience!
Also I find a slightly damp cloth is good for removing stuck shed especially for eye caps. Soft fingers over sharp tweezers though, I feel better with a towel though.

Ok so nothing to do with snakes but curious. Should I be concerned about egg compaction in my female beardie. She is on her 3rd clutch seemingly normal egg laying behaviors. Is egg compaction common is healthy females or just unhealthy beardies? I think I know the answer because my husbandry and diet is better than most but just thought I’d ask.
